4d-Flat Compactifications With Brane Vorticities

We present solutions in six-dimensional gravity coupled to a sigma model, in the presence of three-brane sources. The space transverse to the branes is a compact non-singular manifold. The example of O(3) sigma model in the presence of two three-branes is worked out in detail. We show that the four-dimensional flatness is obtained with a single condition involving the brane tensions, which are in general different and may be both positive, and another characteristic of the branes, vorticity. We speculate that the adjustment of the effective four-dimensional cosmological constant may occur through the exchange of vorticity between the branes. We then give exact instanton type solutions for sigma models targeted on a general Kähler manifold, and elaborate in this framework on multi-instantons of the O(3) sigma model. The latter have branes, possibly with vorticities, at the instanton positions, thus generalizing our two-brane solution.

Lorentz-violating graviton masses: getting around ghosts, low strong coupling scale and VDVZ discontinuity

A theory with the action combining the Einstein--Hilbert term and graviton mass terms violating Lorentz invariance is considered at linearized level about Minkowskian background. It is shown that with one of the masses set equal to zero, the theory has the following properties: (i) there is a gap of order $m$ in the spectrum, where $m$ is the graviton mass scale; (ii) the dispersion relations at ${\bf p}^2 \gg m^2$ are $ω^2 \propto {\bf p}^2$, the spectrum of tensor modes being relativistic, while other modes having unconventional maximum velocity; (iii) the VDVZ discontinuity is absent; (iv) the strong coupling scale is $(mM_{Pl})^{1/2}$. The latter two properties are in sharp contrast to the Lorentz-invariant gravity with the Pauli--Fierz mass term.

Holes in the ghost condensate

In a recently proposed model of ``ghost condensation'', spatially homogeneous states may mix, via tunneling, with inhomogeneous states which are somewhat similar to bubbles in the theory of false vacuum decay, the corresponding bubble nucleation rate being exponentially sensitive to the ultraviolet completion of the model. The conservation of energy and charge requires that the energy density is negative and the field is strongly unstable in a part of the nucleated bubble. Unlike in the theory of false vacuum decay, this region does not expand during subsequent real-time evolution. In the outer part, positive energy outgoing waves develop, which eventually form shocks. Behind the outgoing waves and away from the bubble center, the background settles down to its original value. The outcome of the entire process is thus a microscopic region of negative energy and strong field -- ``hole in the ghost condensate'' -- plus a collection of outgoing waves (particles of the ghost condensate field) carrying away finite energy.

Semiclassical Study of Baryon and Lepton Number Violation in High-Energy Electroweak Collisions

We make use of a semiclassical method for calculating the suppression exponent for topology changing transitions in high-energy electroweak collisions. In the Standard Model these processes are accompanied by violation of baryon and lepton number. By using a suitable computational technique we obtain results for s-wave scattering in a large region of initial data. Our results show that baryon and lepton number violation remains exponentially suppressed up to very high energies of at least 30 sphaleron masses (250 TeV). We also conclude that the known analytic approaches inferred from low energy expansion provide reasonably good approximations up to the sphaleron energy (8 TeV) only.

Suppression of baryon number violation in electroweak collisions: Numerical results

We present a semiclassical study of the suppression of topology changing, baryon number violating transitions induced by particle collisions in the electroweak theory. We find that below the sphaleron energy the suppression exponent is remarkably close to the analytic estimates based on a low energy expansion about the instanton. Above the sphaleron energy, the relevant semiclassical solutions have qualitatively different properties from those below the sphaleron: they correspond to jumps on top of the barrier. Yet these processes remain exponentially suppressed, and, furthermore, the tunneling exponent flattens out in energy. We also derive lower bounds on the tunneling exponent which show that baryon number violation remains exponentially suppressed up to very high energies of at least 30 sphaleron masses (250 TeV).

Instanton-Like Processes in Particle Collisions: a Numerical Study of the SU(2)-Higgs Theory below the Sphaleron Energy

We use semiclassical methods to calculate the probability of inducing a change of topology via a high-energy collision in the SU(2)-Higgs theory. This probability is determined by a complex solution to a classical boundary value problem on a contour in the complex time plane. In the case of small particle number it is the probability of instanton-like processes in particle collisions. We obtain numerically configurations with the correct topological features and expected properties in the complex time plane. Our work demonstrates the feasibility of the numerical approach to the calculation of instanton-like processes in gauge theories. We present our preliminary results for the suppression factor of topology changing processes, which cover a wide range of incoming particle numbers and energies below the sphaleron energy.
