Infrared phonon spectroscopy on the Cairo pentagonal antiferromagnet Bi2Fe4O9: a study through the pressure induced structural transition

Magnetic and crystallographic transitions in the Cairo pentagonal magnet Bi2Fe4O9 are investigated by means of infrared synchrotron-based spectroscopy as a function of temperature (20 - 300 K) and pressure (0 - 15.5 GPa). One of the phonon modes is shown to exhibit an anomalous softening as a function of temperature in the antiferromagnetic phase below 240 K, highlighting spin-lattice coupling. Moreover, under applied pressure at 40 K, an even larger softening is observed through the pressure induced structural transition. Lattice dynamical calculations reveal that this mode is indeed very peculiar as it involves a minimal bending of the strongest superexchange path in the pentagonal planes, as well as a decrease of the distances between second neighbor irons. The latter confirms the hypothesis made by Friedrich et al.,1 about an increase in the oxygen coordination of irons being at the origin of the pressure-induced structural transition. As a consequence, one expects a new magnetic superexchange path that may alter the magnetic structure under pressure.

Dimer Physics in the Frustrated Cairo Pentagonal Antiferromagnet Bi2Fe4O9

The research field of magnetic frustration is dominated by triangle-based lattices but exotic phenomena can also be observed in pentagonal networks. A peculiar noncollinear magnetic order is indeed known to be stabilized in Bi2Fe4O9 materializing a Cairo pentagonal lattice. We present the spin wave excitations in the magnetically ordered state, obtained by inelastic neutron scattering. They reveal an unconventional excited state related to local precession of pairs of spins. The magnetic excitations are then modeled to determine the superexchange interactions for which the frustration is indeed at the origin of the spin arrangement. This analysis unveils a hierarchy in the interactions, leading to a paramagnetic state (close to the Néel temperature) constituted of strongly coupled dimers separated by much less correlated spins. This produces two types of response to an applied magnetic field associated with the two nonequivalent Fe sites, as observed in the magnetization distributions obtained using polarized neutrons.

Raman spectroscopy of alpha-FeOOH (goethite) near antiferromagnetic to paramagnetic phase transition

Synthetic powder, ore samples and mineral single crystals of goethite ($α-$FeOOH) were investigated with polarized Raman spectroscopy at temperatures from 300 K to 473 K. The symmetry of the vibrational modes, observed in different scattering configurations, was determined unequivocally. The assignment of the Raman-active modes to definite atomic vibrations is supported by two types of lattice-dynamical calculations: empirical shell-model and $\textit{ab initio}$ DFT. The temperature dependencies of the lineshape parameters of some Raman-active vibrations near to the antiferromagnetic-paramagnetic phase transition infers for a significant spin-lattice coupling in this compound. The most informative in this aspect is the $B_{3g}$ phonon at 387 cm$^{-1}$, which overlays a broad scattering background and displays a pronounced asymmetric Fano-lineshape. The asymmetry increases in the paramagnetic state above the Neel temperature ($T_{\text{N}}$ = 393 K) indicating a strong interaction of this mode with the underlying excitation continuum. The origin of the excitation background is discussed in light of our experimental results and the existing data for the magnetic structure and transport properties of $α-$FeOOH. We rationalize that, most probably, the background stems from magnetic excitations, and the asymmetric shape of the $B_{3g}$ phonon is a result of a linear spin-phonon coupling of this mode with the Fe-O1-Fe spin dimers. Another mechanism, a phonon interaction with thermally activated charge carriers above above $T_{\text{N}}$, is also considered.

Single-crystal neutron diffraction study of hexagonal YbMnO$_3$ multiferroic under magnetic field

We report single-crystal neutron diffraction study of the magnetic structure of the multiferroic compound YbMnO$_3$, a member of the hexagonal manganite family, in zero-field and under a magnetic field applied along the $c$-axis. We propose a scenario for the zero-field magnetic ordering and for the field-induced magnetic reorientation of the Mn and of the two Yb on distinct crystallographic sites, compatible with the macroscopic measurements, as well as with previous powder neutron diffraction experiment and results from other techniques (optical second harmonic generation, Mössbauer spectroscopy). Our study should contribute in settling some debated issues about the magnetic properties of this material, as part of a broader investigation of the entire hexagonal RMnO$_3$ (R = Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Y) family.

Stabilization of the multiferroic spin cycloid in Ni$_3$V$_2$O$_8$ by light Co-doping

We present macroscopic and neutron diffraction data on multiferroic lightly Co-doped Ni$_3$V$_2$O$_8$. Doping Co into the parent compound suppresses the sequence of four magnetic phase transitions and only two magnetically ordered phases, the paraelectric high temperature incommensurate (HTI) and ferroelectric low temperature incommensurate (LTI), can be observed. Interestingly, the LTI multiferroic phase with a spiral (cycloidal) magnetic structure is stabilized down to at least 1.8 K, which could be revealed by measurements of the electric polarization and confirmed by neutron diffraction on single crystal samples. The extracted magnetic moments of the LTI phase contain besides the main exchange also fine components of the cycloid allowed by symmetry which result in a small amplitude variation of the magnetic moments along the cycloid propagation due to the site-dependent symmetry properties of the mixed representations. In the HTI phase a finite imaginary part of the spine magnetic moment could be deduced yielding a spin cycloid instead of a purely sinusoidal structure with an opposite spin chirality for different spine spin chains. The magnetic ordering of the cross-tie sites in both phases is different in comparison to the respective ones in the pure Ni compound. A wider temperature stability range of the HTI phase has been observed in comparison to Ni$_3$V$_2$O$_8$ which can be explained by an additional single-ion easy-axis anisotropy due to Co-doping. The larger incommensurability of the Co-doped compounds yields a larger ratio between the competing next-nearest neighbour and nearest neighbour interaction, which is $J_2/J_1$=0.43 (0.47) for a doping level of 7% (10%) Co compared to 0.39 in the parent compound.

Strain-driven non-collinear magnetic ordering in orthorhombic epitaxial YMnO3 thin films

We show that using epitaxial strain and chemical pressure in orthorhombic YMnO3 and Co-substituted (YMn0.95Co0.05O3) thin films, a ferromagnetic response can be gradually introduced and tuned. These results, together with the measured anisotropy of the magnetic response, indicate that the unexpected observation of ferromagnetism in orthorhombic o-RMnO3 (R= Y, Ho, Tb, etc) films originates from strain-driven breaking of the fully compensated magnetic ordering by pushing magnetic moments away from the antiferromagnetic [010] axis. We show that the resulting canting angle and the subsequent ferromagnetic response, gradually increase (up to ~ 1.2\degree) by compression of the unit cell. We will discuss the relevance of these findings, in connection to the magnetoelectric response of orthorhombic manganites.

Ferroelectricity and strain effects in orthorhombic YMnO3 thin films

We report on the dielectric properties of epitaxial [001] and [100]-textured thin films of antiferromagnetic orthorhombic YMnO3 and their variation under compressive epitaxial strain. It is found that weakly strained YMnO3 films are ferroelectric with a polarization along c-axis switchable by 90 degrees by an external magnetic field. When reducing film thickness and increasing epitaxial strain, the ferroelectric order is progressively suppressed. Analysis of structural, dielectric and magnetic data indicates that suppression of ferroelectricity when reducing thickness is accompanied by an enlarged ratio a/b of the in-plane cell parameters of the orthorhombic structure and the appearance of a net magnetization. All results can be well described by considering the multiferroic phase diagram of orthorhombic manganites.

Magnetization Reversal by Electric-Field Decoupling of Magnetic and Ferroelectric Domains Walls in Multiferroic-Based Heterostructures

We demonstrate that the magnetization of a ferromagnet in contact with an antiferromagnetic multiferroic (LuMnO3) can be speedily reversed by electric field pulsing, and the sign of the magnetic exchange bias can switch and recover isothermally. As LuMnO3 is not ferroelastic, our data conclusively show that this switching is not mediated by strain effects but is a unique electric-field driven decoupling of the ferroelectric and ferromagnetic domains walls. Their distinct dynamics are essential for the observed magnetic switching.

Magnetoelectric coupling in epitaxial orthorhombic YMnO3 thin films

We have grown epitaxial thin-films of the orthorhombic phase of YMnO3 oxide on Nb:SrTiO3(001) substrates and their structure, magnetic and dielectric response have been measured. We have found that a substrate-induced strain produces an in-plane compression of the YMnO3 unit cell. The temperature-dependent magnetization curves display a significant ZFC-FC hysteresis at temperatures below the Neel temperature (TN around 40K). The dielectric constant increases gradually (up to 26%) below TN and mimics the ZFC magnetization curve. We argue that these effects are a manifestation of magnetoelectric coupling in thin films and that the magnetic structure of YMnO3 can be controlled by substrate selection.

Electric field effects on magnetotransport properties of multiferroic Py/YMnO3/Pt heterostructures

We report on the exchange bias between antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric hexagonal YMnO3 epitaxial thin films sandwiched between a metallic electrode (Pt) and a soft ferromagnetic layer (Py). Anisotropic magnetoresistance measurements are performed to monitor the presence of an exchange bias field. When the heteroestructure is biased by an electric field, it turns out that the exchange bias field is suppressed. We discuss the dependence of the observed effect on the amplitude and polarity of the electric field. Particular attention is devoted to the role of current leakage across the ferroelectric layer.

Exchange biasing and electric polarization with YMnO3

We report on the growth and functional characterization of epitaxial thin films of the multiferroic YMnO3. We show that using Pt as a seed layer on SrTiO3(111) substrates, epitaxial YMnO3 films (0001) textured are obtained. An atomic force microscope has been used to polarize electric domains revealing the ferroelectric nature of the film. When a Permalloy layer is grown on top of the YMnO3(0001) film, clear indications of exchange bias and enhanced coercivity are observed at low temperature. The observation of coexisting antiferromagnetism and electrical polarization suggests that the biferroic character of YMnO3 can be exploited in novel devices.

Electric field control of exchange bias in multiferroic epitaxial heterostructures

The magnetic exchange bias between epitaxial thin films of the multiferroic (antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric) hexagonal YMnO3 oxide and a soft ferromagnetic (FM) layer is used to couple the magnetic response of the ferromagnetic layer to the magnetic state of the antiferromagnetic one. We will show that biasing the ferroelectric YMnO3 layer by an appropriate electric field allows modifying and controlling the magnetic exchange bias and subsequently the magnetotransport properties of the FM layer. This finding may contribute to pave the way towards a new generation of electric-field controlled spintronics devices.

High and low-temperature crystal and magnetic structures of epsilon-Fe2O3 and their correlation to its magnetic properties

The crystal and magnetic structures of the orthorhombic e-Fe2O3 have been studied by simultaneous Rietveld refinement of X-ray and neutron powder diffraction data in combination with Mossbauer spectroscopy, as well as magnetisation and heat capacity measurements. It has been found that above 150 K the e-Fe2O3 polymorph is a collinear ferrimagnet with the magnetic moments directed along the a axis, while the magnetic ordering below 80 K is characterised by a square-wave incommensurate structure. The transformation between these two states is a second order phase transition and involves subtle structural changes mostly affecting the coordination of the tetrahedral and one of the octahedral Fe sites. The temperature dependence of the e-Fe2O3 magnetic properties is discussed in the light of these results.
