A Round-Robin Type Protocol for Distributed Estimation with $H_\infty$ Consensus

The paper considers a distributed robust estimation problem over a network with directed topology involving continuous time observers. While measurements are available to the observers continuously, the nodes interact according to a Round-Robin rule, at discrete time instances. The results of the paper are sufficient conditions which guarantee a suboptimal $H_\infty$ level of consensus between observers with sampled interconnections.

Control over adversarial packet-dropping communication networks revisited

We revisit a one-step control problem over an adversarial packet-dropping link. The link is modeled as a set of binary channels controlled by a strategic jammer whose intention is to wage a `denial of service' attack on the plant by choosing a most damaging channel-switching strategy. The paper introduces a class of zero-sum games between the jammer and controller as a scenario for such attack, and derives necessary and sufficient conditions for these games to have a nontrivial saddle-point equilibrium. At this equilibrium, the jammer's optimal policy is to randomize in a region of the plant's state space, thus requiring the controller to undertake a nontrivial response which is different from what one would expect in a standard stochastic control problem over a packet dropping channel.

Guaranteed Cost Tracking for Uncertain Coupled Multi-agent Systems Using Consensus over a Directed Graph

This paper considers the leader-follower control problem for a linear multi-agent system with directed communication topology and linear nonidentical uncertain coupling subject to integral quadratic constraints (IQCs). A consensus-type control protocol is proposed based on each agent's states relative to its neighbors and leader's state relative to agents which observe the leader. A sufficient condition is obtained by overbounding the cost function. Based on this sufficient condition, a computational algorithm is introduced to minimize the proposed guaranteed bound on tracking performance, which yields a suboptimal bound on the system consensus control and tracking performance. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated using a simulation example.

Physical Realizability Conditions for Mixed Bilinear-Linear Quantum Cascades with Pure Field Coupling

This paper aims to provide conditions under which a quantum stochastic differential equation can serve as a model for interconnection of a bilinear system evolving on an operator group SU(2) and a linear quantum system representing a quantum harmonic oscillator. To answer this question we derive algebraic conditions for the preservation of canonical commutation relations (CCRs) of quantum stochastic differential equations (QSDE) having a subset of system variables satisfying the harmonic oscillator CCRs, and the remaining variables obeying the CCRs of SU(2). Then, it is shown that from the physical realizability point of view such QSDEs correspond to bilinear-linear quantum cascades.

Conditions for detectability in distributed consensus-based observer networks

The paper discusses fundamental detectability properties associated with the problem of distributed state estimation using networked observers. The main result of the paper establishes connections between detectability of the plant through measurements, observability of the node filters through interconnections, and algebraic properties of the underlying communication graph, to ensure the interconnected filtering error dynamics are stabilizable via output injection.

On the preservation of commutation and anticommutation relations of N-level quantum systems

The goal of this paper is to provide conditions under which a quantum stochastic differential equation (QSDE) preserves the commutation and anticommutation relations of the SU(n) algebra, and thus describes the evolution of an open n-level quantum system. One of the challenges in the approach lies in the handling of the so-called anomaly coefficients of SU(n). Then, it is shown that the physical realizability conditions recently developed by the authors for open n-level quantum systems also imply preservation of commutation and anticommutation relations.

Guaranteed Performance Leader-follower Control for Multi-agent Systems with Linear IQC-Constrained Coupling

This paper considers the leader-follower control problem for a linear multi-agent system with undirected topology and linear coupling subject to integral quadratic constraints (IQCs). A consensus-type control protocol is proposed based on each agent's states relative its neighbors. In addition a selected set of agents uses for control their states relative the leader. Using a coordinate transformation, the consensus analysis of the multi-agent system is recast as a decentralized robust control problem for an auxiliary interconnected large scale system. Based on this interconnected large scale system, sufficient conditions are obtained which guarantee that the system tracks the leader. These conditions guarantee a suboptimal bound on the system tracking performance. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated using a simulation example.

Physical Realizability of Multi-Level Quantum Systems

This paper considers the physical realizability condition for multi-level quantum systems having polynomial Hamiltonian and multiplicative coupling with respect to several interacting boson fields. Specifically, it generalizes a recent result the authors developed for two-level quantum systems. For this purpose, the algebra of SU(n) was incorporated. As a consequence, the obtained condition is given in terms of the structure constants of SU(n).

Preservation of Commutation Relations and Physical Realizability of Open Two-Level Quantum Systems

Coherent feedback control considers purely quantum controllers in order to overcome disadvantages such as the acquisition of suitable quantum information, quantum error correction, etc. These approaches lack a systematic characterization of quantum realizability. Recently, a condition characterizing when a system described as a linear stochastic differential equation is quantum was developed. Such condition was named physical realizability, and it was developed for linear quantum systems satisfying the quantum harmonic oscillator canonical commutation relations. In this context, open two-level quantum systems escape the realm of the current known condition. When compared to linear quantum system, the challenges in obtaining such condition for such systems radicate in that the evolution equation is now a bilinear quantum stochastic differential equation and that the commutation relations for such systems are dependent on the system variables. The goal of this paper is to provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the preservation of the Pauli commutation relations, as well as to make explicit the relationship between this condition and physical realizability.
