Unusual kinetic properties of usual Heusler alloys

The review considers various groups of Heusler compounds, which can have the properties of a semiconductor, a half-metallic ferromagnet, a spin gapless semiconductor, a topological semimetal, and a noncollinear antiferromagnet. In these Heusler compounds, "conventional" from the point of view of the crystal structure, unusual kinetic and magnetic properties can be observed, which are caused by the features of their electronic structure (e.g., presence of an energy gap for one spin projection) and magnetic state (e.g., strong ferromagnetism, compensated ferrimagnetism, etc.). Their magnetic and kinetic characteristics are very sensitive to external influences. Depending on the alloy composition and external parameters, transitions between the considered states can be realized. All this opens up further prospects for controlling the electronic and magnetic characteristics of such compounds and their practical application.

Giant density-of-states van Hove singularities in the face-centered cubic lattice

All van Hove singularities in the density of states (DOS) of face-centered cubic lattice in the nearest and next-nearest neighbour approximation, focusing on higher-order ones, are found and classified. At special values of the ratio $τ$ of nearest and next-nearest neighbour hopping integrals, $t$ and $t'$, giant DOS singularities, caused by van Hove lines or surfaces, are formed. An exact formula for DOS which provides efficient numerical implementation is proposed. The standard tetrahedron method is demonstrated to be inapplicable due to its poor convergence in the vicinity of kinks caused by van Hove singularities. A comparison with the case of large space dimensionality (infinite coordination number) including next-nearest neighbours is performed.

Two-band model and RVB-type states: application to Kondo lattices, pyrochlores and Mn-based systems

An exotic fractionalized Fermi-liquid FL$^*$ theory of metallic systems, which combines resonant-valence-bond (RVB) state and the band of current carriers, is treated. An application of this theory to spin-liquid, antiferromagnetic and nearly antiferromagnetic systems is proposed with the use of various bosonic and fermionic representations, a comparison with perturbation theory in the $s-d(f)$ exchange model being performed. The topological aspects including formation of the small Fermi surface are treated. In the case of narrow bands (strong correlations), the ground state is considered as a direct product of RVB and dopon or Weng's fermion states. Examples of Kondo lattices, doped pyrochlores, and metallic $β$-Mn, YMn$_2$, Y$_{1-x}$Sc$_x$Mn$_2$ systems are discussed, analogies with copper-oxide systems being treated.

Electronic States and Anomalous Hall Effect in Strongly Correlated Topological Systems

We treat elementary excitations, the spin-liquid state, and the anomalous Hall effect (including the quantum one in purely 2D situation) in layered highly correlated systems. The mechanisms of the formation of a topological state associated with bare flat energy bands, correlations, and spin-orbit interactions, including the appearance of correlated Chern bands, are analyzed. A two-band picture of the spectrum in metallic kagome lattices is proposed, which involves a transition from the ferromagnetic state, a flat strongly correlated band, and a band of light Dirac electrons. In this case, the effect of separation of the spin and charge degrees of freedom turns out to be significant. The application of the representations of the Kotliar-Rukenstein auxiliary bosons and the Ribeiro-Wen dopons to this problem is discussed.

Electron Spectrum Topology and Giant Density-of-States Singularities in Cubic Lattices

The topology of isoenergetic surfaces in reciprocal space for simple (sc), body-centered (bcc), and face-centered (fcc) cubic lattices is investigated in detail in the tight-binding approximation, taking into account the transfer integrals between the nearest and next neighbors $t$ and $t'$. It is shown that, for values $τ= t'/t = τ_\ast$ corresponding to a change in the topology of surfaces, lines and surfaces of $\mathbf k$-van Hove points can be formed. With a small deviation of $τ$ from these singular values, the spectrum in the vicinity of the van Hove line (surface) is replaced by a weak dependence on $\mathbf k$ in the vicinity of several van Hove points that have a giant mass proportional to $|τ- τ_ \ast|^{-1}$. Singular contributions to the density of states near peculiar $τ$ values are considered; analytical expressions for the density of states being obtained in terms of elliptic integrals. It is shown that in a number of cases the maximum value of the density of states is achieved at energies corresponding not to $\mathbf{k}$-points on the Brillouin zone edges, but to its internal points in highly symmetrical directions. The corresponding contributions to electron and magnetic properties are treated, in particular, in application to weak itinerant magnets.

Half-metallic Ferromagnets, Spin Gapless Semiconductors, and Topological Semimetals Based on Heusler Alloys

A review of theoretical and experimental studies of the electronic structure, electronic and magnetic properties of various systems of Heusler alloys in the states of a half-metallic ferromagnet, a spin gapless semiconductor, and a topological semimetal is presented. These substances have unusual, highly sensitive to external influences, magnetic and electronic characteristics, which is associated with the presence of energy gaps and exotic excitations in them. The features of the behavior and evolution of the electronic structure and properties in each of these states, as well as during the transition between them, are considered. The possibility to purposefully control the properties of such materials is prospective for their practical application.

Giant van Hove Density of States Singularities and Anomalies of Electron and Magnetic Properties in Cubic Lattices

Densities of states for simple (sc) and base-centered (bcc) cubic lattices with account of nearest and next-nearest neighbour hopping integrals $t$ and $t'$ are investigated in detail. It is shown that at values of $τ\equiv t'/t = τ_\ast$, corresponding to the change of isoenergetic surface topology, the formation of van Hove $\bf k$ lines takes place. At small deviation from these special values, the weakly dispersive spectrum in the vicinity of van Hove lines is replaced by a weak $\bf k$-dependence in the vicinity of few van Hove points which possess huge masses proportional to $|τ- τ_\ast|^{-1}$. The singular contributions to the density of states originating from van Hove points and lines are considered, as well as the change in the topology of isoenergetic surfaces in the $\bf k$-space with the variation of $τ$. Closed analytical expressions for density of states as a function of energy and $τ$ in terms of elliptic integrals, and power-law asymptotics at $τ= τ_\ast$ are obtained. Besides the case of sc lattice with small $τ$ (maximum of density of states corresponds to energy level of X $\bf k$-point), maximal value of the density of states is always achieved at energies corresponding to \textit{inner} $\bf k$-points of the Brillouin zone positioned in high-symmetry directions, and not at zone faces.

Microscopic origins and stability of the ferromagnetism in Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$

Based on the density functional theory, we examine the origin of ferromagnetism in the Weyl semimetal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ using different types of response theories. We argue that the magnetism of Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ has a dual nature and bears certain aspects of both itineracy and localization. On the one hand, the magnetism is soft, where the local magnetic moments strongly depend on temperature and the angles formed by these moments at different Co sites of the kagome lattice, as expected for itinerant magnets. On the other hand, the picture of localized spins still remains adequate for the description of the local stability of the ferromagnetic (FM) order with respect to the transversal spin fluctuations. For the latter purposes, we employ two approaches, which provide quite different pictures for interatomic exchange interactions: the regular magnetic force theorem and a formally exact theory based on the calculation of the inverse response function. The exact theory predicts Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ to be a three-dimensional ferromagnet with the strongest interaction operating between next-nearest neighbors in the adjacent kagome planes. The ligand states are found to play a very important role by additionally stabilizing the FM order. When the local moments decrease, the interplane interactions sharply decrease, first causing the FM order to become quasi-two-dimensional, and then making it unstable with respect to the spin-spiral order propagating perpendicular to the kagome plane. The latter instability is partly contributed by the states at the Fermi surface and may be relevant to the magnetic behavior of Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ near the Curie temperature. Peculiarities of the half-metallic ferromagnetism in Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ are also discussed.

Topological phase transitions in strongly correlated systems: application to Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$

The topological transition in the strongly correlated half-metallic ferromagnetic compound Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ from Weyl semimetal (including chiral massless fermions) to a non-magnetic state is treated. This transition goes with a change in topological invariant, and is accompanied by a non-topological transition from saturated ferromagnetic to paramagnetic state, the minority Fermi surface being transformed from ghost (hidden) to real. A corresponding description is given in terms of slave fermion representation for the effective narrow-band Hubbard model. The system Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ provides a bright example of coexistence of non-trivial topology and strong low-dimensional ferromagnetism. A comparison is performed with other compounds where frustrations result in formation of a correlated paramagnetic state.

Electronic Structure, Correlation Effects and Physical Properties of d- and f-Metals and Their Compounds

The book includes all main physical properties of d- and f-transition-metal systems and corresponding theoretical concepts. Especial attention is paid to the theory of magnetism and transport phenomena. Some examples of non-traditional questions which are treated in detail in the book: the influence of density of states singularities on electron properties; many-electron description of strong itinerant magnetism; mechanisms of magnetic anisotropy; microscopic theory of anomalous transport phenomena in ferromagnets. Besides considering classical problems of solid state physics as applied to transition metals, modern developments in the theory of correlation effects in d- and f-compounds are considered within many-electron models. The book contains, where possible, a simple physical discussion. More difficult questions are considered in Appendices.

Incommensurate magnetic order in rare earth and transition metal compounds with local moments

Within the framework of the $s$-$d(f)$ exchange model in the mean-field approximation for square, simple cubic, body-centered and face-centered cubic lattices, the formation of a ferromagnetic, spiral, and commensurate antiferromagnetic order is investigated. The possibility of the formation of inhomogeneous states (magnetic phase separation), which necessarily arises during first-order phase transitions in the electron filling parameter, is taken into account. The saturation of the antiferromagnetic and spiral states is studied depending on the parameters of the model. The results obtained include a rich variety of magnetic structures and phase transitions, allowing the interpretation of magnetic properties of semiconducting and metallic systems containing magnetic atoms.

Metal-insulator transition and antiferromagnetism in the generalized Hubbard model: Treatment of correlation effects

The ground state for the half-filled $t-t'$ Hubbard model is treated within the Hartree-Fock approximation and the slave boson approach including correlations. The criterium for the metal-insulator transition in the Slater scenario is formulated using an analytical free-energy expansion in the next-nearest-neighbor transfer integral $t'$ and in direct antiferromagnetic gap $Δ$. The correlation effects are generally demonstrated to favor the first-order transition. For a square lattice with a strong van Hove singularity, accidental close degeneracy of antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases is analytically found in a wide parameter region. As a result, there exists an interval of $t'$ values for which the metal-insulator transition is of the first order due to the existence of the van Hove singularity. This interval is very sensitive to model parameters (direct exchange integral) or external parameters. For the simple and body-centered cubic lattices, the transition from the insulator antiferromagnetic state with increasing $t'$ occurs to the phase of an antiferromagnetic metal and is a second-order transition which is followed by a transition to a paramagnetic metal. These results are quantitatively modified when taking into account the intersite Heisenberg interaction, which can induce first-order transitions. A comparison with the Monte Carlo results is performed.

Bilayer, hydrogenated and fluorinated graphene: QED vs SU(2) QCD theory

Motivated by recent experimental and calculational investigations of bilayer, hydrogenated and fluorinated graphene, we apply the formalisms of U(1) QED (quantum electrodynamics) and SU(2) QCD (quantum chromodynamics) theories of strongly correlated state. Unlike non-bipartite triangular lattice, on bipartite honeycomb lattice there always exists a monopole that transforms trivially under all the microscopic symmetries, destabilizing the Dirac spin liquid (DSL), so that one can continuously tune the DSL state to the state with parent SU(2) instead of U(1) gauge group. The SU(2) theory describes a spin-liquid state which is different from usual DSL and is probably unstable with respect to Neel or valence-bond solid (VBS) phases, except for the quantum critical point. This point of view means a possibility of VBS states in graphene systems.

Peculiarities of electronic transport and magnetic state in half-metallic ferromagnetic and spin gapless semiconducting Heusler alloys

A brief survey of experimental and theoretical studies of half-metallic ferromagnets (HMFs) and spin gapless semiconductors is given, the possible candidates being the X$_2$YZ (X = Mn, Fe, Co; Y = Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni; Z = Al, Si, Ga, Ge, In, Sn, Sb) Heusler alloys. The data on the electrical resistivity, normal and anomalous Hall Effect, and magnetic properties are presented. It is shown that the Co$_2$FeZ alloys demonstrate properties of conventional ferromagnets, the HMF properties being also manifested at the variation of the Z-component. The Fe$_2$YAl and Mn$_2$YAl alloys show at the variation of the Y-component both metallic and semiconducting electronic characteristics, the magnetic properties, changing from the ferromagnetic to compensated ferrimagnetic state. The HMF and spin gapless semiconductor states are supposed to exist in these Heusler alloys systems.

Scaling theory of magnetism in frustrated Kondo lattices

A scaling theory of the Kondo lattices with frustrated exchange interactions is developed, criterium of antiferromagnetic ordering and quantum-disordered state being investigated. The calculations taking into account magnon and incoherent spin dynamics are performed. Depending on the bare model parameters, one or two quantum phase transitions into non-magnetic spin-liquid and Kondo Fermi-liquid ground states can occur with increasing the bare coupling constant. Whereas the renormalization of the magnetic moment in the ordered phase can reach orders of magnitude, spin fluctuation frequency and coupling constant are moderately renormalized in the spin-liquid phase. This justifies application of the scaling approach. Possibility of a non-Fermi-liquid behavior is treated.

Modern Physics of the Condensed State: Strong Correlations and Quantum Topology

The topic of the review is the application of new ideas of unconventional quantum states to the physics of condensed matter, in particular of solid state, in the context of modern field theory. A comparison is made with classical papers on many-electron theory, including the formalism of many-electron operators. The essentially many-particle nature of the ground state, individual and collective excitations, and quantum fluctuations in the systems under consideration, as well as quantum phase transitions are discussed with an emphasis on topological aspects and with allowance for the effects of frustration. Variational approaches and representations of auxiliary particles, corresponding mean-field approximation and gauge field theory, confinement-deconfinement problem, violation of the Fermi-liquid picture, and exotic non-Fermi-liquid states are considered. An overview is given of the modern theory of entangled topological states, formation of spin liquid, strings and string networks.

Topological nature of Hubbard bands in strongly correlated systems

The topological nature of the Mott-Hubbard state in strongly correlated systems is treated. These systems are described in terms of spin-charge separation, i.e. spinon-holon deconfinement in the gauge field. Analogies with the quantum Hall effect and Landau quantization are considered, the presence of the Chern-Simons term being important for proper description of the Hubbard splitting. Occurrence of topological frustrations with doping in an effective two-band model is demonstrated. The role of orbital degrees of freedom and possible occurrence of orbital currents are discussed.

Quantum topological transitions and spinons in metallic ferro- and antiferromagnets

An effective Hamiltonian describing fluctuation effects in the magnetic phases of the Hubbard model in terms of spinon excitations is derived. A comparison of spin-rotational Kotliar-Ruckenstein slave boson and Ribeiro-Wen dopon representations is performed. The quantum transition into the half-metallic ferromagnetic state with vanishing of spin-down Fermi surface is treated as the topological Lifshitz transition in the quasimomentum space. The itinerant-localized magnetism transitions and Mott transition in antiferromagnetic state are considered in the topological context. Related metal-insulator transitions in Heusler alloys are discussed.
