Half-Metallic Ferromagnets and Spin Gapless Semiconductors

A brief review of experimental and theoretical studies of half-metallic ferromagnets (HMF) and spin gapless semiconductors (SGS) is given. The data on resistivity and magnetoresistivity are presented. An important role of non-quasiparticle states owing to electron-magnon scattering in transport properties is discussed. The problem of low-temperature resistivity in HMF is treated in terms of one-magnon and two-magnon scattering processes.

Electron states and magnetic phase diagrams of strongly correlated systems

Various auxiliary-particle approaches to treat electron correlations in many-electron models are analyzed. Applications to copper-oxide layered systems are discussed. The ground-state magnetic phase diagrams are considered within the Hubbard and $s$-$d$ exchange (Kondo) models for square and simple cubic lattices vs. band filling and interaction parameter. A generalized Hartree-Fock approximation is employed to treat commensurate ferro-, antiferromagnetic, and incommensurate (spiral) magnetic phases, and also magnetic phase separation. The correlations are taken into account within the Hubbard model by using the slave-boson approach. The main advantage of this approach is correct estimating the contribution of doubly occupied states number and therefore the paramagnetic phase energy.

Realization of anisotropic compass model on the diamond lattice of Cu$^{2+}$ in CuAl$_2$O$_4$

Spin-orbit (SO) Mott insulators are regarded as a new paradigm of magnetic materials, whose properties are largely influenced by SO coupling and featured by highly anisotropic bond-dependent exchange interactions between the spin-orbital entangled Kramers doublets, as typically manifested in $5d$ iridates. Here, we propose that a very similar situation can be realized in cuprates when the Cu$^{2+}$ ions reside in a tetrahedral environment, like in spinel compounds. Using first-principles electronic structure calculations, we construct a realistic model for the diamond lattice of the Cu$^{2+}$ ions in CuAl$_2$O$_4$ and show that the magnetic properties of this compound are largely controlled by anisotropic compass-type exchange interactions that dramatically modify the magnetic ground state by lifting the spiral spin-liquid degeneracy and stabilizing a commensurate single-$\boldsymbol{q}$ spiral.

Electronic properties of the ternary system YbPd$_2 $Ge$_{2-x}$

The data on the electronic and magnetic properties of the ternary ytterbium-based alloy YbPd$_2 $Ge$_{1.7}$ are presented and compared with those for YbPd$_2 $Ge$_{2}$ and YbPd$_2 $Ge compounds. YbPd$_2 $Ge$_{1.7}$ demonstrates a moderate heavy-fermion behavior with linear specific heat coefficient $γ\simeq $ 100 mJ/mol K$^2$. Magnetic susceptibility is large and demonstrates nearly Curie behavior. Resistivity shows a power-law $T^{1.2}$-dependence at not too low temperatures $T$. Thermoelectric power has non-monotonous behavior and changes its sign at low $T$.

Formation of exotic states in the $s-d$ exchange and $t-J$ models

Different scenarios of the implementation of the two-band model in strongly correlated electrons systems, including frustrated magnets, high-temperature superconductors, and Kondo lattices, are considered. The interaction of current carriers with magnetic moments in the representations of pseudofermions or Schwinger bosons describing the spinon excitations is studied on the basis of the derived Hamiltonians of the $s-d$ exchange and $t-J$ models within the formalism of many-electron Hubbard operators.

Dirac points, spinons and spin liquid in twisted bilayer graphene

Twisted bilayer graphene is an excellent example of highly correlated system demonstrating a nearly flat electron band, the Mott transition and probably a spin liquid state. Besides the one-electron picture, analysis of Dirac points is performed in terms of spinon Fermi surface in the limit of strong correlations. Application of gauge field theory to describe deconfined spin liquid phase is treated. Topological quantum transitions, including those from small to large Fermi surface in the presence of van Hove singularities, are discussed.

One- and two-channel Kondo model with logarithmic Van Hove singularity: a numerical renormalization group solution

Simple scaling consideration and NRG solution of the one- and two-channel Kondo model in the presence of a logarithmic Van Hove singularity at the Fermi level is given. The temperature dependences of local and impurity magnetic susceptibility and impurity entropy are calculated. The low-temperature behavior of the impurity susceptibility and impurity entropy turns out to be non-universal in the Kondo sense and independent of the $s-d$ coupling $J$. The resonant level model solution in the strong coupling regime confirms the NRG results. In the two-channel case the local susceptibility demonstrates a non-Fermi-liquid power-law behavior.

Peculiarities of the electronic transport in half-metallic Co-based Heusler alloys

Electrical, magnetic and galvanomagnetic properties of half-metallic Heusler alloys of Co$_2$YZ (Y = Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, and Z = Al, Si, Ga, Ge, In, Sn, Sb) were studied in the temperature range 4.2--900 K and in magnetic fields of up to 100 kOe. It was found that varying Y in affects strongly the electric resistivity and its temperature dependence $ρ(T)$, while this effect is not observed upon changing Z. When Y is varied, extrema (maximum or minimum) are observed in $ρ(T)$ near the Curie temperature $T_C$. At $T < T_C$, the $ρ(T)$ behavior can be ascribed to a change in electronic energy spectrum near the Fermi level. The coefficients of the normal and anomalous Hall effect were determined. It was shown that the latter coefficient, $R_S$, is related to the residual resistivity $ρ_0$ by a power law $R_S \sim ρ_0^k/M_S$ with $M_S$ the spontaneous magnetization. The exponent $k$ was found to be 1.8 for Co$_2$FeZ alloys, which is typical for asymmetric scattering mechanisms, and 2.9 for Co$_2$YAl alloys, which indicates an additional contribution to the anomalous Hall effect. The temperature dependence of resistivity at low temperatures is analyzed and discussed in the framework of the two-magnon scattering theory.

Unconventional magnetism of the Kondo lattice

A review is given of the experimental situation and theoretical predictions concerning unconventional magnetic ordering in dense Kondo 4f- and 5f-systems, including recently investigated on cerium, ytterbium, and actinide based ternary systems. This unconventional ordering is characterized by a small magnetic moment and exhibits features typical of both localized-spin and itinerant-electron magnets. Particular attention is paid to ferromagnetic systems and the competition among different types of magnetic ordering. The perturbation theory method, renormalization group approach, and auxiliary pseudofermion representation are considered as tools for describing the formation of the Kondo lattice ground state. The problem of non-Fermi-liquid behavior is also discussed.

Magnetic phase transitions and unusual antiferromagnetic states in the Hubbard model

Ground state magnetic phase diagrams of the square and simple cubic lattices are investigated for the narrow band Hubbard model within the slave-boson approach by Kotliar and Ruckenstein. The transitions between saturated (half-metallic) and non-saturated ferromagnetic phases as well as similar transition in antiferromagnetic (AFM) state are considered in the three-dimensional case. Two types of saturated antiferromagnetic state with different concentration dependences of sublattice magnetization are found in the two-dimensional case in the vicinity of half-filling: the state with a gap between AFM subbands and AFM state with large electron mass. The latter state is hidden by the phase separation in the finite-U case.

Quantum effects and magnetism in the spatially distributed DNA molecules

Electronic and magnetic properties of DNA structures doped by simple and transition d- and f-metal ions (Gd, La, Cu, Zn, Au) are reviewed. Both one- and two dimensional systems are considered. A particular attention is paid to gadolinium and copper doped DNA systems, their unusual magnetism being treated. The problem of classical and quantum transport (including transfer of genetic information during replication and transcription) and electron localization in biological systems is discussed.

The Kondo-lattice state in the presence of Van Hove singularities: a next-leading order scaling description

A renormalization group treatment of the Kondo model with logarithmic Van Hove singularity in the electron density of states is performed within next-leading order scaling, different magnetic phases being considered. The effective coupling constant remains small, renormalized magnetic moment and spin-fluctuation frequency decreasing by several orders of magnitude. Thus wide non-Fermi-liquid behavior regions are found from the scaling trajectories in a broad interval of the bare coupling parameter. Applications to itinerant magnetism theory are discussed.

Non-quasiparticle states in a half-metallic ferromagnet with antiferromagnetic $s-d(f)$ interaction

Non-quasiparticle (incoherent) states which play an important role in the electronic structure of half-metallic ferromagnets (HMF) are investigated consistently in the case of antiferromagnetic $s-d(f)$ exchange interaction. Their appropriate description in the limit of strong correlations requires a rearrangement of perturbation series in comparison with the usual Dyson equation. This consideration provides a solution of the Kondo problem in the HMF case and can be important for first-principle HMF calculations performed earlier for ferromagnetic $s-d(f)$ interaction.

Frustrated Heisenberg Antiferromagnets on Cubic Lattices: Magnetic Structures, Exchange Gaps, and Non-Conventional Critical Behaviour

We have studied the Heisenberg antiferromagnets characterized by the magnetic structures with the periods being two times larger than the lattice period. We have considered all the types of the Bravais lattices (simple cubic, bcc and fcc) and divided all these antiferromagnets into 7 classes i.e. 3 plus 4 classes denoted with symbols A and B correspondingly. The order parameter characterizing the degeneracies of the magnetic structures is an ordinary Neel vector for A classes and so-called 4-complex for B classes. We have taken into account the fluctuation corrections for these states within the spin-wave and large-N expansions ($N$ is the number of spin components). Below the Neel temperature $T_{\rm{N}}$ quantum and thermal fluctuations lift the degeneracy making simple one-wave vector collinear structure preferable for all the classes. A satellite of this effect is opening of the exchange gaps at certain wave vectors in the spin wave spectrum (there is an analogous effect for the nonuniform static transverse susceptibility). However, as the temperature approaches $T_{\rm{N}}$, the exchange gaps are closing. We have calculated the critical indices $η$ and $ν$ to order of $1/N$ and found that they differ for A and B classes.

Spiral magnetic order, non-uniform states and electron correlations in the conducting transition metal systems

The ground-state magnetic phase diagram is calculated within the Hubbard and $s$-$d$ exchange (Kondo) models for square and simple cubic lattices vs. band filling and interaction parameter. The difference of the results owing to the presence of localized moments in the latter model is discussed. We employ a generalized Hartree-Fock approximation (HFA) to treat commensurate ferromagnetic (FM), antiferromagnetic (AFM), and incommensurate (spiral) magnetic phases. The electron correlations are taken into account within the Hubbard model by using the Kotliar-Ruckenstein slave boson approximation (SBA). The main advantage of this approach is a correct qualitative description of the paramagnetic phase: its energy becomes considerably lower as compared with HFA, and the gain in the energy of magnetic phases is substantially reduced.

Magnetic States, Correlation Effects and Metal-Insulator Transition in FCC Lattice

The ground-state magnetic phase diagram (including collinear and spiral states) of the single-band Hubbard model for the face-centered cubic lattice and related metal-insulator transition (MIT) are investigated within the slave-boson approach by Kotliar and Ruckenstein. The correlation induced electronic spectrum narrowing and a comparison with a generalized Hartree-Fock approximation allow one to estimate the strength of correlation effects. This, as well as the MIT scenario, depends dramatically on the ratio of the next-nearest and nearest electron hopping integrals $t'/t$. In contrast with metallic state, possessing strong band narrowing, insulator one is only weakly correlated. The magnetic (Slater) scenario of MIT is found to be superior over the Mott one. Unlike simple and body-centered cubic lattices, MIT is the first order transition for most $t'/t$. The insulator state is type-II or type-III antiferromagnet, and the metallic state is spin-spiral, collinear antiferromagnet or paramagnet depending on $t'/t$. The picture of magnetic ordering is compared with that in the standard localized-electron (Heisenberg) model.

Magnetic ordering and non-Fermi-liquid behavior in the multichannel Kondo-lattice model

Scaling equations for the Kondo lattice in the paramagnetic and magnetically ordered phases are derived to two-loop order with account of spin dynamics. The results are applied to describe various mechanisms of the non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) behavior in the multichannel Kondo-lattice model where a fixed point occurs in the weak-coupling region. The corresponding temperature dependences of electronic and magnetic properties are discussed. The model describes naturally formation of a magnetic state with soft boson mode and small moment value. An important role of Van Hove singularities in the magnon spectral function is demonstrated. The results are rather sensitive to the type of magnetic ordering and space dimensionality, the conditions for NFL behavior being more favorable in the antiferromagnetic and 2D cases.

Metal-Insulator Transition in the Hubbard Model: Correlations and Spiral Magnetic Structures

The metal--insulator transition (MIT) for the square, simple cubic, and body-centered cubic lattices is investigated within the $t-t'$ Hubbard model at half-filling by using both the Hartree-Fock approximation (HFA) generalized for the case of spiral order and Kotliar-Ruckenstein slave-boson approach. It turns out that magnetic scenario of MIT becomes superior over non-magnetic one. The electron correlations lead to some suppression of the spiral phases in comparison with HFA. We found the presence of metallic antiferromagnetic (spiral) phase in the case of three-dimensional lattices.
