Computation and Numerical Simulation of Focused Undulator Radiation for Optical Stochastic Cooling

Optical stochastic cooling (OSC) is a promising technique for the cooling of dense particle beams. Its operation at optical frequencies enables obtaining a much larger bandwidth compared to the wellknown microwave-based stochastic cooling. In the OSC undulator radiation generated by a particle in an upstream \pickup" undulator is amplified and focused at the location of a downstream "kicker" undulator. Inside the kicker, a particle interacts with its own radiation field from the pickup. The resulting interaction produces a longitudinal kick with its value depending on the particles momentum which, when correctly phased, yields to longitudinal cooling. The horizontal cooling is achieved by introducing a coupling between longitudinal and horizontal degrees of freedom. Vertical cooling is achieved by coupling between horizontal and vertical motions in the ring. In this paper, we present formulae for computation of the corrective kick and validate them against numerical simulations performed using a wave-optics computer program.

Efficiency versus instability in plasma accelerators

Plasma wake-field acceleration is one of the main technologies being developed for future high-energy colliders. Potentially, it can create a cost-effective path to the highest possible energies for e+e- or γ-γ colliders and produce a profound effect on the developments for high-energy physics. Acceleration in a blowout regime, where all plasma electrons are swept away from the axis, is presently considered to be the primary choice for beam acceleration. In this paper, we derive a universal efficiency-instability relation, between the power efficiency and the key instability parameter of the trailing bunch for beam acceleration in the blowout regime. We also show that the suppression of instability in the trailing bunch can be achieved through BNS damping by the introduction of a beam energy variation along the bunch. Unfortunately, in the high efficiency regime, the required energy variation is quite high, and is not presently compatible with collider-quality beams. We would like to stress that the development of the instability imposes a fundamental limitation on the acceleration efficiency, and it is unclear how it could be overcome for high-luminosity linear colliders. With minor modifications, the considered limitation on the power efficiency is applicable to other types of acceleration.

Luminosity Limitations in Linear Colliders Based on Plasma Acceleration

Particle acceleration in plasma creates a possibility of exceptionally high accelerating gradients and appears as a very attractive option for future linear electron-positron and/or photon-photon colliders. These high accelerating gradients were already demonstrated in a number of experiments. However, a linear collider requires exceptionally high beam brightness which still needs to be demonstrated. In this article we discuss major phenomena which limit the beam brightness of accelerated beam and, consequently, the collider luminosity.

Stripline kicker for integrable optics test accelerator

We present a design of a stripline kicker for Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA). For its experimental program IOTA needs two full-aperture kickers, capable to create an arbitrary controllable kick in 2D. For that reason their strengths are variable in a wide range of amplitudes up to 16 mrad, and the pulse length 100 ns is less than a revolution period for electrons. In addition, the kicker should have a physical aperture of 40 mm for a proposed operation with proton beam, and an outer size of 70 mm to fit inside existing quadrupole magnets to save space in the ring. Computer simulations using CST Microwave Studio show high field uniformity and wave impedance close to 50 Ω.

An 800-MeV superconducting LINAC to support megawatt proton operations at Fermilab

Active discussion on the high energy physics priorities in the US carried out since summer of 2013 resulted in changes in Fermilab plans for future development of the existing accelerator complex. In particular, the scope of Project X was reduced to the support of the Long Base Neutrino Facility (LBNF) at the project first stage. The name of the facility was changed to the PIP-II (Proton Improvement Plan). This new facility is a logical extension of the existing Proton Improvement Plan aimed at doubling average power of the Fermilab's Booster and Main Injector (MI). Its design and required R&D are closely related to the Project X. The paper discusses the goals of this new facility and changes to the Project X linac introduced to support the goals.

High-power magnetron transmitter as an RF source for superconducting linear accelerators

A concept of a high-power magnetron transmitter for operation within a wideband control feedback loop in phase and amplitude is presented. This transmitter is proposed to drive Superconducting RF (SRF) cavities for intensity-frontier GeV-scale proton/ion linacs. The transmitter performance at the dynamic control was verified in experiments with CW, S-Band, 1 kW magnetrons. The wideband control of magnetrons, required for the superconducting linacs, was realized using the magnetrons, injection-locked by the phase-modulated signals. The capabilities of the magnetrons injection-locked by the phase-modulated signals and adequateness for feeding of SRF cavities were verified by measurements of the transfer function magnitude characteristics of single and 2-cascade magnetrons, by measurements the magnetrons phase performance and by measurements of spectra of the carrier frequency. At the ratio of power of locking signal to output power less than -13 dB (in 2-cascade scheme per magnetron, respectively) we demonstrated a phase modulation bandwidth of over 1.0 MHz. The carrier frequency spectrum width about of 1 Hz at the level less than -60 dBc did not demonstrate broadening at wide range of magnitude and frequency of the phase modulation of the injection-locking signal. The wideband dynamic control of output power of the transmitter model was first experimentally demonstrated using two magnetrons, combined in power and injection-locked by the phase-modulated signals. The experiments with the injection-locked magnetrons adequately emulated the wideband dynamic control with a feedback control system, which will allow suppressing all known parasitic modulation of the accelerating field in the SRF cavities. The magnetron transmitter concept, tests of the setups and injection-locking of magnetrons by phase-modulated signals are discussed in this work.

The Case for a Muon Collider Higgs Factory

We propose the construction of a compact Muon Collider Higgs Factory. Such a machine can produce up to \sim 14,000 at 8\times 10^{31} cm^-2 sec^-1 clean Higgs events per year, enabling the most precise possible measurement of the mass, width and Higgs-Yukawa coupling constants.

Comment on "Physics considerations for laser-plasma linear colliders" and on "Beamstrahlung considerations in laser-plasma-accelerator-based linear colliders"

C. B. Schroeder, E. Esarey, C. Benedetti, and W. P. Leemans {Phys. Rev. ST Accel. Beams 13, 101301 (2010) and 15, 051301 (2012)} have proposed a set of parameters for a TeV-scale collider based on plasma wake field accelerator principles. In particular, it is suggested that the luminosities greater than 10^34 cm-2s-1 are attainable for an electron-positron collider. In this comment we dispute this set of parameters on the basis of first principles. The interactions of accelerating beam with plasma impose fundamental limitations on beam properties and, thus, on attainable luminosity values.

Measurement of magnetic permeability of steel laminations of Booster gradient magnets

New experiments at Fermilab require higher beam intensities at Booster, resulting in higher influence of magnet steel on the beam. In order to carefully take these effects into account it is necessary to know geometric and material properties of magnets. This work is dedicated to the measurement of magnetic permeability of steel laminations of Booster gradient magnets as a complex function of frequency in the frequency range from several megahertz up to 1 GHz. The magnetic permeability is estimated by analyzing S-parameters of microstrip lines made up from laminated steel.

Transverse Instabilities of Coasting Beams with Space Charge

Transverse beam stability is strongly affected by the beam space charge. Usually it is analyzed with the rigid-beam model. However this model is only valid when a bare (not affected by the space charge) tune spread is small compared to the space charge tune shift. This condition specifies a relatively small area of parameters which, however, is the most interesting for practical applications. The Landau damping rate and the beam Schottky spectra are computed assuming that validity condition is satisfied. The results are applied to a round Gaussian beam. The stability thresholds are described by simple fits for the cases of chromatic and octupole tune spreads.
