Stochastic Non-preemptive Co-flow Scheduling with Time-Indexed Relaxation

Co-flows model a modern scheduling setting that is commonly found in a variety of applications in distributed and cloud computing. A stochastic co-flow task contains a set of parallel flows with randomly distributed sizes. Further, many applications require non-preemptive scheduling of co-flow tasks. This paper gives an approximation algorithm for stochastic non-preemptive co-flow scheduling. The proposed approach uses a time-indexed linear relaxation, and uses its solution to come up with a feasible schedule. This algorithm is shown to achieve a competitive ratio of $(2\log{m}+1)(1+\sqrt{m}Δ)(1+mΔ){(3+Δ)}/{2}$ for zero-release times, and $(2\log{m}+1)(1+\sqrt{m}Δ)(1+mΔ)(2+Δ)$ for general release times, where $Δ$ represents the upper bound of squared coefficient of variation of processing times, and $m$ is the number of servers.

Optimizing TCP Loss Recovery Performance Over Mobile Data Networks

Recent advances in high-speed mobile networks have revealed new bottlenecks in ubiquitous TCP protocol deployed in the Internet. In addition to differentiating non-congestive loss from congestive loss, our experiments revealed two significant performance bottlenecks during the loss recovery phase: flow control bottleneck and application stall, resulting in degradation in QoS performance. To tackle these two problems we firstly develop a novel opportunistic retransmission algorithm to eliminate the flow control bottleneck, which enables TCP sender to transmit new packets even if receiver's receiving window is exhausted. Secondly, application stall can be significantly alleviated by carefully monitoring and tuning the TCP sending buffer growth mechanism. We implemented and modularized the proposed algorithms in the Linux kernel thus they can plug-and-play with the existing TCP loss recovery algorithms easily. Using emulated experiments we showed that, compared to the existing TCP loss recovery algorithms, the proposed optimization algorithms improve the bandwidth efficiency by up to 133% and completely mitigate RTT spikes, i.e., over 50% RTT reduction, over the loss recovery phase.

On Deterministic Sampling Patterns for Robust Low-Rank Matrix Completion

In this letter, we study the deterministic sampling patterns for the completion of low rank matrix, when corrupted with a sparse noise, also known as robust matrix completion. We extend the recent results on the deterministic sampling patterns in the absence of noise based on the geometric analysis on the Grassmannian manifold. A special case where each column has a certain number of noisy entries is considered, where our probabilistic analysis performs very efficiently. Furthermore, assuming that the rank of the original matrix is not given, we provide an analysis to determine if the rank of a valid completion is indeed the actual rank of the data corrupted with sparse noise by verifying some conditions.

Tiered cloud storage via two-stage, latency-aware bidding

In cloud storage, the digital data is stored in logical storage pools, backed by heterogeneous physical storage media and computing infrastructure that are managed by a Cloud Service Provider (CSP). To balance the tradeoff between service performance and cost, CSPs often employ different storage tiers, for instance, cold storage and hot storage. Storing data in hot storage incurs high storage cost yet delivers low access latency, whereas cold storage is able to inexpensively store massive amounts of data and thus provides lower cost with higher latency. In this paper, we address a major challenge confronting the CSPs utilizing such tiered storage architecture - how to maximize their overall profit over a variety of storage tiers that offer distinct characteristics, as well as file placement and access request scheduling policies. To this end, we propose a scheme where the CSP offers a two-stage auction process for (a) requesting storage capacity, and (b) requesting accesses with latency requirements. Our two-stage bidding scheme provides a hybrid storage and access optimization framework with the objective of maximizing the CSP's total net profit over four dimensions: file acceptance decision, placement of accepted files, file access decision and access request scheduling policy. The proposed optimization is a mixed-integer nonlinear program that is hard to solve. We propose an efficient heuristic to relax the integer optimization and to solve the resulting nonlinear stochastic programs. The algorithm is evaluated under different scenarios and with different storage system parameters, and insightful numerical results are reported by comparing the proposed approach with other profit-maximization models. We see a profit increase of over 60% of our proposed method compared to other schemes in certain simulation scenarios.

Tail Index for a Distributed Storage System with Pareto File Size Distribution

Distributed storage systems often employ erasure codes to achieve high data reliability while attaining space efficiency. Such storage systems are known to be susceptible to long tails in response time. It has been shown that in modern online applications such as Bing, Facebook, and Amazon, the long tail of latency is of particular concern, with $99.9$th percentile response times that are orders of magnitude worse than the mean. Taming tail latency is very challenging in erasure-coded storage systems since quantify tail latency (i.e., $x$th-percentile latency for arbitrary $x\in[0,1]$) has been a long-standing open problem. In this paper, we propose a mathematical model to quantify {\em tail index} of service latency for arbitrary erasure-coded storage systems, by characterizing the asymptotic behavior of latency distribution tails. When file size has a heavy tailed distribution, we find tail index, defined as the exponent at which latency tail probability diminishes to zero, in closed-form, and further show that a family of probabilistic scheduling algorithms are (asymptotically) optimal since they are able to achieve the exact tail index.

Efficient Low Rank Tensor Ring Completion

Using the matrix product state (MPS) representation of the recently proposed tensor ring decompositions, in this paper we propose a tensor completion algorithm, which is an alternating minimization algorithm that alternates over the factors in the MPS representation. This development is motivated in part by the success of matrix completion algorithms that alternate over the (low-rank) factors. In this paper, we propose a spectral initialization for the tensor ring completion algorithm and analyze the computational complexity of the proposed algorithm. We numerically compare it with existing methods that employ a low rank tensor train approximation for data completion and show that our method outperforms the existing ones for a variety of real computer vision settings, and thus demonstrate the improved expressive power of tensor ring as compared to tensor train.

Sprout: A functional caching approach to minimize service latency in erasure-coded storage

Modern distributed storage systems often use erasure codes to protect against disk and node failures to increase reliability, while trying to meet the latency requirements of the applications and clients. Storage systems may have caches at the proxy or client ends in order to reduce the latency. In this paper, we consider a novel caching framework with erasure code called functional caching. Functional Caching involves using erasure-coded chunks in the cache such that the code formed by the chunks in storage nodes and cache combined are maximal-distance-separable (MDS) erasure codes. Based on the arrival rates of different files, placement of file chunks on the servers, and service time distribution of storage servers, an optimal functional caching placement and the access probabilities of the file request from different disks are considered. The proposed algorithm gives significant latency improvement in both simulations and a prototyped solution in an open-source, cloud storage deployment.

Rank Determination for Low-Rank Data Completion

Recently, fundamental conditions on the sampling patterns have been obtained for finite completability of low-rank matrices or tensors given the corresponding ranks. In this paper, we consider the scenario where the rank is not given and we aim to approximate the unknown rank based on the location of sampled entries and some given completion. We consider a number of data models, including single-view matrix, multi-view matrix, CP tensor, tensor-train tensor and Tucker tensor. For each of these data models, we provide an upper bound on the rank when an arbitrary low-rank completion is given. We characterize these bounds both deterministically, i.e., with probability one given that the sampling pattern satisfies certain combinatorial properties, and probabilistically, i.e., with high probability given that the sampling probability is above some threshold. Moreover, for both single-view matrix and CP tensor, we are able to show that the obtained upper bound is exactly equal to the unknown rank if the lowest-rank completion is given. Furthermore, we provide numerical experiments for the case of single-view matrix, where we use nuclear norm minimization to find a low-rank completion of the sampled data and we observe that in most of the cases the proposed upper bound on the rank is equal to the true rank.

Joint Energy-Bandwidth Allocation for Multi-User Channels with Cooperating Hybrid Energy Nodes

In this paper, we consider the energy-bandwidth allocation for a network of multiple users, where the transmitters each powered by both an energy harvester and conventional grid, access the network orthogonally on the assigned frequency band. We assume that the energy harvesting state and channel gain of each transmitter can be predicted for $K$ time slots a priori. The different transmitters can cooperate by donating energy to each other. The tradeoff among the weighted sum throughput, the use of grid energy, and the amount of energy cooperation is studied through an optimization objective which is a linear combination of these quantities. This leads to an optimization problem with O($N^2K$) constraints, where $N$ is the total number of transmitter-receiver pairs, and the optimization is over seven sets of variables that denote energy and bandwidth allocation, grid energy utilization, and energy cooperation. To solve the problem efficiently, an iterative algorithm is proposed using the Proximal Jacobian ADMM. The optimization sub-problems corresponding to Proximal Jacobian ADMM steps are solved in closed form. We show that this algorithm converges to the optimal solution with an overall complexity of O($N^2K^2$). Numerical results show that the proposed algorithms can make efficient use of the harvested energy, grid energy, energy cooperation, and the available bandwidth.

Deterministic and Probabilistic Conditions for Finite Completability of Low-rank Multi-View Data

We consider the multi-view data completion problem, i.e., to complete a matrix $\mathbf{U}=[\mathbf{U}_1|\mathbf{U}_2]$ where the ranks of $\mathbf{U},\mathbf{U}_1$, and $\mathbf{U}_2$ are given. In particular, we investigate the fundamental conditions on the sampling pattern, i.e., locations of the sampled entries for finite completability of such a multi-view data given the corresponding rank constraints. In contrast with the existing analysis on Grassmannian manifold for a single-view matrix, i.e., conventional matrix completion, we propose a geometric analysis on the manifold structure for multi-view data to incorporate more than one rank constraint. We provide a deterministic necessary and sufficient condition on the sampling pattern for finite completability. We also give a probabilistic condition in terms of the number of samples per column that guarantees finite completability with high probability. Finally, using the developed tools, we derive the deterministic and probabilistic guarantees for unique completability.

A Rate Adaptation Algorithm for Tile-based 360-degree Video Streaming

In the 360-degree immersive video, a user only views a part of the entire raw video frame based on her viewing direction. However, today's 360-degree video players always fetch the entire panoramic view regardless of users' head movement, leading to significant bandwidth waste that can be potentially avoided. In this paper, we propose a novel adaptive streaming scheme for 360-degree videos. The basic idea is to fetch the invisible portion of a video at the lowest quality based on users' head movement prediction and to adaptively decide the video playback quality for the visible portion based on bandwidth prediction. Doing both in a robust manner requires overcome a series of challenges, such as jointly considering the spatial and temporal domains, tolerating prediction errors, and achieving low complexity. To overcome these challenges, we first define quality of experience (QoE) metrics for adaptive 360-degree video streaming. We then formulate an optimization problem and solve it at a low complexity. The algorithm strategically leverages both future bandwidth and the distribution of users' head positions to determine the quality level of each tile (i.e., a sub-area of a raw frame). We further provide theoretical proof showing that our algorithm achieves optimality under practical assumptions. Numerical results show that our proposed algorithms significantly boost the user QoE by at least 20\% compared to baseline algorithms.

Control of Charging of Electric Vehicles through Menu-Based Pricing

We propose an online pricing mechanism for electric vehicle (EV) charging. A charging station decides prices for each arriving EV depending on the energy and the time within which the EV will be served (i.e. deadline). The user selects either one of the contracts by paying the prescribed price or rejects all depending on their surpluses. The charging station can serve users using renewable energy and conventional energy. Users may select longer deadlines as they may have to pay less because of the less amount of conventional energy, however, they have to wait a longer period. We consider a {\em myopic} charging station and show that there exists a pricing mechanism which jointly maximizes the social welfare and the profit of the charging station when the charging station knows the utilities of the users. However, when the charging station does not know the utilities of the users, the social welfare pricing strategy may not maximize the expected profit of the charging station and even the profit may be $0$. We propose a fixed profit pricing strategy which provides a guaranteed fixed profit to the charging station and can maximize the profit in practice. We empirically show that our proposed mechanism reduces the peak-demand and utilizes the limited charging spots in a charging station efficiently.

Wireless Network Coding with Local Network Views: Coded Layer Scheduling

One of the fundamental challenges in the design of distributed wireless networks is the large dynamic range of network state. Since continuous tracking of global network state at all nodes is practically impossible, nodes can only acquire limited local views of the whole network to design their transmission strategies. In this paper, we study multi-layer wireless networks and assume that each node has only a limited knowledge, namely 1-local view, where each S-D pair has enough information to perform optimally when other pairs do not interfere, along with connectivity information for rest of the network. We investigate the information-theoretic limits of communication with such limited knowledge at the nodes. We develop a novel transmission strategy, namely Coded Layer Scheduling, that solely relies on 1-local view at the nodes and incorporates three different techniques: (1) per layer interference avoidance, (2) repetition coding to allow overhearing of the interference, and (3) network coding to allow interference neutralization. We show that our proposed scheme can provide a significant throughput gain compared with the conventional interference avoidance strategies. Furthermore, we show that our strategy maximizes the achievable normalized sum-rate for some classes of networks, hence, characterizing the normalized sum-capacity of those networks with 1-local view.

Taming Tail Latency for Erasure-coded, Distributed Storage Systems

Distributed storage systems are known to be susceptible to long tails in response time. In modern online storage systems such as Bing, Facebook, and Amazon, the long tails of the service latency are of particular concern. with 99.9th percentile response times being orders of magnitude worse than the mean. As erasure codes emerge as a popular technique to achieve high data reliability in distributed storage while attaining space efficiency, taming tail latency still remains an open problem due to the lack of mathematical models for analyzing such systems. To this end, we propose a framework for quantifying and optimizing tail latency in erasure-coded storage systems. In particular, we derive upper bounds on tail latency in closed form for arbitrary service time distribution and heterogeneous files. Based on the model, we formulate an optimization problem to jointly minimize the weighted latency tail probability of all files over the placement of files on the servers, and the choice of servers to access the requested files. The non-convex problem is solved using an efficient, alternating optimization algorithm. Numerical results show significant reduction of tail latency for erasure-coded storage systems with a realistic workload.

Optimal Transmission Policies for Multi-hop Energy Harvesting Systems

In this paper, we consider a multi-hop energy harvesting (EH) communication system in a full-duplex mode, where arrival data and harvested energy curves in the source and the relays are modeled as general functions. This model includes the EH system with discrete arrival processes as a special case. We investigate the throughput maximization problem considering minimum utilized energy in the source and relays and find the optimal offline algorithm. We show that the optimal solution of the two-hop transmission problem have three main steps: (i) Solving a point-to-point throughput maximization problem at the source; (ii) Solving a point-to-point throughput maximization problem at the relay (after applying the solution of first step as the input of this second problem); (iii) Minimizing utilized energy in the source. In addition, we show that how the optimal algorithm for the completion time minimization problem can be derived from the proposed algorithm for throughput maximization problem. Also, for the throughput maximization problem, we propose an online algorithm and show that it is more efficient than the benchmark one (which is a direct application of an existing point-to-point online algorithm to the multi-hop system).

Menu-Based Pricing for Charging of Electric Vehicles with Vehicle-to-Grid Service

The paper considers a bidirectional power flow model of the electric vehicles (EVs) in a charging station. The EVs can inject energies by discharging via a Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) service which can enhance the profits of the charging station. However, frequent charging and discharging degrade battery life. A proper compensation needs to be paid to the users to participate in the V2G service. We propose a menu-based pricing scheme, where the charging station selects a price for each arriving user for the amount of battery utilization, the total energy, and the time (deadline) that the EV will stay. The user can accept one of the contracts or rejects all depending on their utilities. The charging station can serve users using a combination of the renewable energy and the conventional energy bought from the grid. We show that though there exists a profit maximizing price which maximizes the social welfare, it provides no surplus to the users if the charging station is aware of the utilities of the users. If the charging station is not aware of the exact utilities, the social welfare maximizing price may not maximize the expected profit. In fact, it can give a zero profit. We propose a pricing strategy which provides a guaranteed fixed profit to the charging station and it also maximizes the expected profit for a wide range of utility functions. Our analysis shows that when the harvested renewable energy is small the users have higher incentives for the V2G service. We, numerically, show that the charging station's profit and the user's surplus both increase as V2G service is efficiently utilized by the pricing mechanism.

On the DoF of Two-way $2\times2\times2$ Relay Networks with or without Relay Caching

Two-way relay is potentially an effective approach to spectrum sharing and aggregation by allowing simultaneous bidirectional transmissions between source-destinations pairs. This paper studies the two-way $2\times2\times2$ relay network, a class of four-unicast networks, where there are four source/destination nodes and two relay nodes, with each source sending a message to its destination. We show that without relay caching the total degrees of freedom (DoF) is bounded from above by $8/3$, indicating that bidirectional links do not double the DoF (It is known that the total DoF of one-way $2\times2\times2$ relay network is $2$.). Further, we show that the DoF of $8/3$ is achievable for the two-way $2\times2\times2$ relay network with relay caching. Finally, even though the DoF of this network is no more than $8/3$ for generic channel gains, DoF of $4$ can be achieved for a symmetric configuration of channel gains.

Reliability of k-out-of-n Data Storage System with Deterministic Parallel and Serial Repair

In this paper, we find the Laplace Stieltjes transform of the probability of data loss for the k-out-of-n distributed storage system with deterministic repair times. We consider two repair models, namely the serial and parallel repair. We show that for failure rate much lower than the repair rate, mean time of data loss for the two models is the same unlike the case for exponential repair models.
