Some new equivalences of Anderson's paving conjectures

Anderson's paving conjectures are known to be equivalent to the Kadison-Singer problem. We prove some new equivalences of Anderson's conjectures that require the paving of smaller sets of matrices. We prove that if the strictly upper triangular operatorss are pavable, then every 0 diagonal operator is pavable. This result follows from a new paving condition for positive operators. In addition, we prove that if the upper triangular Toeplitz operators are paveable, then all Toeplitz operators are paveable.

A Constrained Nevanlinna-Pick Interpolation Problem

We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation on the unit disk with the additional restriction that all analytic interpolating functions satisfy $f'(0)=0.$ Alternatively, these results can be interpreted as interpolation results for $H^{\infty}(V),$ where $V$ is the intersection of the bidisk with an algebraic variety. We use an analysis of C*-envelopes to show that these same conditions do not suffice for matrix interpolation.

Injectivity and Projectivity in Analysis and Topology

We give new proofs for many injectivity results in analysis that make more careful use of the duality between unital abelian C*-algebras and compact Hausdorff spaces. We then extend many of these results to incorporate group actions. Our approach uses only elementary topological constructions and eliminates the need for results from the theory of Boolean algebras and AW*-algebras that were used in earlier proofs.

Projections and the Kadison-Singer Problem

We prove some new equivalences of the paving conjecture and obtain some estimates on the paving constants. In addition we give a new family of counterexamples to one of the Akemann-Anderson conjectures.

Decoherence-Insensitive Quantum Communication by Optimal C^*-Encoding

The central issue in this article is to transmit a quantum state in such a way that after some decoherence occurs, most of the information can be restored by a suitable decoding operation. For this purpose, we incorporate redundancy by mapping a given initial quantum state to a messenger state on a larger-dimensional Hilbert space via a $C^*$-algebra embedding. Our noise model for the transmission is a phase damping channel which admits a noiseless or decoherence-free subspace or subsystem. More precisely, the transmission channel is obtained from convex combinations of a set of lowest rank yes/no measurements that leave a component of the messenger state unchanged. The objective of our encoding is to distribute quantum information optimally across the noise-susceptible component of the transmission when the noiseless component is not large enough to contain all the quantum information to be transmitted. We derive simple geometric conditions for optimal encoding and construct examples.

Interpolation and Balls in C^k

We compare and classify various types of Banach algebra norms on mathbb{C}^k through geometric properties of their unit balls. This study is motivated by various open problems in interpolation theory and in the isometric characterization of operator algebra norms.

Equivariant Maps and Bimodule Projections

We construct a contractive, idempotent, MASA bimodule map on B(H), whose range is not a ternary subalgebra of B(H). Our method uses a crossed-product to reduce the existence of such an idempotent map to an analogous problem about the ranges of idempotent maps that are equivariant with respect to a group action and Hamana's theory of G-injective envelopes.

On the ranges of bimodule projections

We develop a symbol calculus for normal bimodule maps over a masa that is the natural analogue of the Schur product theory. Using this calculus we are able to easily give a complete description of the ranges of contractive normal bimodule idempotents that avoids the theory of J*-algebras. We prove that if $P$ is a normal bimodule idempotent and $\|P\| < 2/\sqrt{3}$ then $P$ is a contraction. We finish with some attempts at extending the symbol calculus to non-normal maps.

Frames, Graphs and Erasures

Two-uniform frames and their use for the coding of vectors are the main subject of this paper. These frames are known to be optimal for handling up to two erasures, in the sense that they minimize the largest possible error when up to two frame coefficients are set to zero. Here, we consider various numerical measures for the reconstruction error associated with a frame when an arbitrary number of the frame coefficients of a vector are lost. We derive general error bounds for two-uniform frames when more than two erasures occur and apply these to concrete examples. We show that among the 227 known equivalence classes of two-uniform (36,15)-frames arising from Hadamard matrices, there are 5 that give smallest error bounds for up to 8 erasures.

Schur multipliers and operator-valued Foguel-Hankel operators

We show that some matrices are Schur multipliers and this is applied to obtain classes of operator-valued Foguel-Hankel operators similar to contractions. This provides partial answers to a problem of K. Davidson and the second author concerning CAR-valued Foguel-Hankel operators.

Quasimultipliers of Operator Spaces

We use the injective envelope to study quasimultipliers of operator spaces. We prove that all representable operator algebra products that an operator space can be endowed with are induced by quasimultipliers. We obtain generalizations of the Banach-Stone theorem.

Injective Envelopes of $C^*$-algebras as Operator Modules

In this paper we give some characterizations of M. Hamana's injective envelope I(A) of a C*-algebra A in the setting of operator spaces and completely bounded maps. These characterizations lead to simplifications and generalizations of some known results concerning completely bounded projections onto C*-algebras. We prove that I(A) is rigid for completely bounded A-module maps. This rigidity yields a natural representation of many kinds of multipliers as multiplications by elements of I(A). In particular, we prove that the(n times iterated) local multiplier algebra of A embeds into I(A). Some remarks on local left/right/quasi multiplier algebras as subsets of I(A) are added.

Multipliers of operator spaces, and the injective envelope

We study the injective envelope I(X) of an operator space X, showing amongst other things that it is a self-dual C$^*-$module. We describe the diagonal corners of the injective envelope of the canonical operator system associated with X. We prove that if X is an operator $A-B$-bimodule, then A and B can be represented completely contractively as subalgebras of these corners. Thus, the operator algebras that can act on X are determined by these corners of I(X) and consequently bimodules actions on X extend naturally to actions on I(X). These results give another characterization of the multiplier algebra of an operator space, which was introduced by the first author, and a short proof of a recent characterization of operator modules, and a related result. As another application, we extend Wittstock's module map extension theorem, by showing that an operator $A-B$-bimodule is injective as an operator $A-B$-bimodule if and only if it is injective as an operator space.
