Dissociative electron attachment to the HNC$_3$ molecule

Dissociative electron attachment (DEA) to the HNC$_3$ is modeled theoretically using a first-principles approach. In HNC$_3$+$e^-$ collisions, there is a low-energy resonance, which has a repulsive character along the H+NC$_3$ coordinate and becomes a bound electronic state of the HNC$_3^-$ anion near the equilibrium of HNC$_3$. The anion state dissociates without a potential barrier towards C$_3$N$^-$+H. The cross section and the rate coefficient of the process were computed. The obtained rate coefficient at low temperatures is $5\times 10^{-9}$cm$^3$/s at 300~K. Such a value of the DEA rate coefficient makes the DEA process by three orders of magnitude more efficient in producing negative molecular ions in the interstellar space than the radiative electron attachment (REA). It is suggested that negative molecular carbon-chain ions, observed in the interstellar medium, are produced by DEA rather than REA.

Dissociative Recombination of CF$^+$

This work presents our theoretical study of the dissociative recombination (DR) of the closed-shell diatomic system CF$^+$ based on an approach recently applied to the CH$^+$ molecule. Our extended treatment uses the UK R-matrix theory and the multichannel quantum-defect theory procedure to uniformly resolve the direct and indirect mechanisms of DR while bypassing explicit dissociative state and electronic coupling calculations. The theoretical results exhibit good overall agreement with previous experimental measurements. At lower scattering energies, good agreement is found only if the rotational structure of the ion is included and the theoretical cross sections are averaged over initial rotational levels corresponding to the temperature at which the experimental measurements were made. At higher scattering energies, our rotationally resolved results are very similar to those obtained without including the ion's rotational structure.

Bound and autoionizing potential energy curves in the CH molecule

This article presents a method of computing bound state potential curves and autoionizing curves using fixed-nuclei R-matrix data extracted from the Quantemol-N software suite. It is a method based on two related approaches of multichannel quantum-defect theory. One is applying bound-state boundary conditions to closed-channel asymptotic solution matrices and the other is searching for resonance positions via eigenphase shift analysis. We apply the method to the CH molecule to produce dense potential-curve data sets presented as graphs and supplied as tables in the publication supplement.

Kinetic rate coefficients for electron-driven collisions with CH$^+$: dissociative recombination and rovibronic excitation

Cross sections and rate coefficients for rovibronic excitation of the CH$^+$ ion by electron impact and dissociative recombination of CH$^+$ with electrons are evaluated using a theoretical approach combining an R-matrix method and molecular quantum defect theory. The method has been developed and tested, comparing the theoretical results with the data from the recent Cryogenic Storage Ring experiment. The obtained cross sections and rate coefficients evaluated for temperatures from 1~K to 10,000~K could be used for plasma modeling in interpretation of astrophysical observations and also in technological applications where molecular hydrocarbon plasma is present.

Radiative electron attachment to rotating C$_3$N through dipole-bound states

The role of a large dipole moment in rotating neutral molecules interacting with low-energy electrons is studied using an accurate {\it ab initio} approach accounting for electronic and rotational degrees of freedom. It is found that theory can reproduce weakly-bound (dipole-bound) states observed in a recent photodetachment experiment with C$_3$N$^-$ [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 127}, 043001 (2021)]. Using a similar level of theory, the cross section for radiative electron attachment to the C$_3$N molecule, forming the dipole-bound states, was determined. The obtained cross section is too small to explain the formation of C$_3$N$^-$ in the interstellar medium, suggesting that it is likely formed by a different process.

Unified treatment of resonant and non-resonant mechanisms in dissociative recombination: benchmark study of CH$^+$

The theoretical approach developed here treats uniformly the direct and indirect mechanisms of dissociative recombination (DR) in a diatomic ion. The present theory is based on electron scattering calculations performed at several internuclear distances in the molecule. It is easy to implement becaus there is no need to separately evaluate couplings and the bound dissociative states of the neutral molecule. The theory can be applied to molecular ions with or without electronic resonances at low energies. The approach is applied to compute the DR cross section in electron-CH$^+$ collisions. The computed cross section agrees generally well with recent state-resolved data from a cryogenic storage-ring experiment, which validates the approach.

Quantum tunneling isotope exchange reaction H2 + D- -> HD + H-

The tunneling reaction H$_2$ + D$^-$ $\rightarrow$ HD + H$^-$ was studied in a recent experimental work at low temperatures (10, 19, and 23~K) by Endres {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 95}, 022706 (2017). An upper limit of the rate coefficient was found to be about 10$^{-18}$ cm$^3$/s. In the present study, reaction probabilities are determined using the ABC program developed by Skouteris {\it et al.}, Comput. Phys. Commun. {\bf 133}, 128 (2000). The probabilities for ortho-H$_2$ and para-H$_2$ in their ground rovibrational states are obtained numerically at collision energies above 50~meV with the total angular momentum $J$ = 0 - 15 and extrapolated below 50~meV using a WKB approach. Thermally averaged rate coefficients for ortho- and para-H$_2$ are obtained; the largest one, for ortho-H$_2$ is about $3.1\times10^{-20}$ cm$^3$/s, which agrees with the experimental results.

Ozone formation in ternary collisions: Theory and experiment reconciled

Absorbing UV radiation, ozone protects life on Earth and plays a fundamental role in Earth's temperature balance. The formation of ozone occurs through the ternary recombination reaction: O$_2$+O+M $\rightarrow$ O$_3$+M, where M can be N$_2$, O$_2$ or Ar. Here, we developed a theoretical approach capable of modeling the formation of ozone molecules in ternary collisions, and applied it to the reaction with M=Ar because of extensive experimental data available. The rate coefficients for the direct formation of O$_3$ in ternary collisions O+O$_2$+Ar were computed for the first time as a function of collision energy, and thermally-averaged coefficients were derived for temperatures 5-900~K leading to a good agreement with available experimental data for temperatures 100-900~K. The present study shows that the formation of ozone in ternary collisions O+O$_2$+Ar at temperatures below 200~K proceeds through a formation of a temporary complex ArO$_2$, while at temperatures above 1000~K, the reaction proceeds mainly through a formation of long-lived vibrational resonances of O$_3^*$. At intermediate temperatures 200~K-1000~K, the process cannot be viewed as a two-step mechanism. In addition, it is found that the majority of O$_3$ molecules formed initially are weakly bound.

Cross Sections for Electron Collisions with NF$_3$

Cross section data are compiled from the literature for electron collisions with nitrogen trifluoride (NF$_3$) molecules. Cross sections are collected and reviewed for total scattering, elastic scattering, momentum transfer, excitations of rotational and vibrational states, dissociation, ionization, and dissociative attachment. For each of these processes, the recommended values of the cross sections are presented. The literature has been surveyed up to the end of 2016.

Lifetimes and wave functions of ozone metastable vibrational states near the dissociation limit in full symmetry approach

Energies and lifetimes (widths) of vibrational states above the lowest dissociation limit of $^{16}$O$_3$ were determined using a previously-developed efficient approach, which combines hyperspherical coordinates and a complex absorbing potential. The calculations are based on a recently-computed potential energy surface of ozone determined with a spectroscopic accuracy [J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 139}, 134307 (2013)]. The effect of permutational symmetry on rovibrational dynamics and the density of resonance states in O$_3$ is discussed in detail. Correspondence between quantum numbers appropriate for short- and long-range parts of wave functions of the rovibrational continuum is established. It is shown, by symmetry arguments, that the allowed purely vibrational ($J=0$) levels of $^{16}$O$_3$ and $^{18}$O$_3$, both made of bosons with zero nuclear spin, cannot dissociate on the ground state potential energy surface. Energies and wave functions of bound states of the ozone isotopologue $^{16}$O$_3$ with rotational angular momentum $J=0$ and 1 up to the dissociation threshold were also computed. For bound levels, good agreement with experimental energies is found: The RMS deviation between observed and calculated vibrational energies is 1~\cm. Rotational constants were determined and used for a simple identification of vibrational modes of calculated levels.

Theoretical study of radiative electron attachment to CN, C2H, and C4H radicals

A first-principle theoretical approach to study the process of radiative electron attachment is developed and applied to the negative molecular ions CN$^-$, C$_4$H$^-$, and C$_2$H$^-$. Among these anions, the first two have already been observed in the interstellar space. Cross sections and rate coefficients for formation of these ions by radiative electron attachment to the corresponding neutral radicals are calculated. For completeness of the theoretical approach, two pathways for the process have been considered: (i) A direct pathway, in which the electron in collision with the molecule spontaneously emits a photon and forms a negative ion in one of the lowest vibrational levels, and (ii) an indirect, or two-step pathway, in which the electron is initially captured through non-Born-Oppenheimer coupling into a vibrationally resonant excited state of the anion, which then stabilizes by radiative decay. We develop a general model to describe the second pathway and show that its contribution to the formation of cosmic anions is small in comparison to the direct mechanism. The obtained rate coefficients at 30~K are $7\times 10^{-16}$cm$^3$/s for CN$^-$, $7\times 10^{-17}$cm$^3$/s for C$_2$H$^-$, and $2\times 10^{-16}$cm$^3$/s for C$_4$H$^-$. These rates weakly depend on temperature between 10K and 100 K. The validity of our calculations is verified by comparing the present theoretical results with data from recent photodetachment experiments.

Vibrational states of the triplet electronic state of H3+. The role of non-adiabatic coupling and geometrical phase

Vibrational energies and wave functions of the triplet state of the H3+ ion have been determined. In the calculations, the ground and first excited triplet electronic states are included as well as the non-Born-Oppenheimer coupling between them. A diabatization procedure transforming the two adiabatic ab initio potential energy surfaces of the triplet-H3+ state into a 2x2 matrix is employed. The diabatization takes into account the non-Born-Oppenheimer coupling and the effect of the geometrical phase due to the conical intersection between the two adiabatic potential surfaces. The results are compared to the calculation involving only the lowest adiabatic potential energy surface of the triplet-H3+ ion and neglecting the geometrical phase. The energy difference between results with and without the non-adiabatic coupling and the geometrical phase is about a wave number for the lowest vibrational levels.

Theory of dissociative recombination of highly-symmetric polyatomic ions

A general first-principles theory of dissociative recombination is developed for highly-symmetric molecular ions and applied to H$_3$O$^{+}$ and CH$_3^+$, which play an important role in astrophysical, combustion, and laboratory plasma environments. The theoretical cross-sections obtained for the dissociative recombination of the two ions are in good agreement with existing experimental data from storage ring experiments.

Resonant structure of low-energy H3+ dissociative recombination

New high-resolution dissociative recombination rate coefficients of rotationally cool and hot H3+ in the vibrational ground state have been measured with a 22-pole trap setup and a Penning ion source, respectively, at the ion storage ring TSR. The experimental results are compared with theoretical calculations to explore the dependence of the rate coefficient on ion temperature and to study the contributions of different symmetries to probe the rich predicted resonance spectrum. The break-up energy was investigated by fragment imaging to derive internal temperatures of the stored parent ions under differing experimental conditions. A systematic experimental assessment of heating effects is performed which, together with a survey of other recent storage-ring data, suggests that the present rotationally cool rate-coefficient measurement was performed at 380^{+50}_{-130} K and that this is the lowest rotational temperature so far realized in storage-ring rate-coefficient measurements on H3+. This partially supports the theoretical suggestion that higher temperatures than assumed in earlier experiments are the main cause for the large gap between the experimental and theoretical rate coefficients. For the rotationally hot rate-coefficient measurement a temperature of below 3250K is derived. From these higher-temperature results it is found that increasing the rotational ion temperature in the calculations cannot fully close the gap between the theoretical and experimental rate coefficients.

Calculation of rate constants for vibrational and rotational excitation of the H3+ ion by electron impact

We present theoretical thermally-averaged rate constants for vibrational and rotational (de-)excitation of the H3+ ion by electron impact. The constants are calculated using the multi-channel quantum-defect approach. The calculation includes processes that involve a change Delta J<=2 in the rotational angular momentum J of H3+. The rate constants are calculated for states with J<=5 for rotational transitions of the H3+ ground vibrational level. The thermal rates for transitions among the lowest eight vibrational levels are also presented, averaged over the rotational structure of the vibrational levels. The conditions for producing non-thermal rotational and vibrational distributions of H3+ in astrophysical environments are discussed.

Theory of dissociative recombination of a linear triatomic ion with permanent electric dipole moment: Study of HCO$^{+}$

We present a theoretical description of dissociative recombination of triatomic molecular ions having large permanent dipole moments. The study has been partly motivated by a discrepancy between experimental and theoretical cross-sections for dissociative recombination of the HCO$^+$ ion. The HCO$^{+}$ ion has a considerable permanent dipole moment ($D\approx$4 debye), which has not been taken explicitly into account in previous theoretical studies. In the present study, we include explicitly the effect of the permanent electric dipole on the dynamics of the incident electron using the generalized quantum defect theory, and we present the resulting cross section obtained. This is the first application of generalized quantum defect theory to the dissociative recombination of molecular ions.

Geometrical phase driven predissociation: Lifetimes of 2^2 A' levels of H_3

We discuss the role of the geometrical phase in predissociation dynamics of vibrational states near a conical intersection of two electronic potential surfaces of a D_{3h} molecule. For quantitative description of the predissociation driven by the coupling near a conical intersection, we developed a method for calculating lifetimes and positions of vibrational predissociated states (Feshbach resonances) for X_3 molecule. The method takes into account the two coupled three-body potential energy surfaces, which are degenerate at the intersection. As an example, we apply the method to obtain lifetimes and positions of resonances of predissociated vibrational levels of the 2^2 A' electronic state of the H_3 molecule. The three-body recombination rate coefficient for the H+H+H -> H_2+H process is estimated.

Chemical modeling of L183 (= L134N) : an estimate of the ortho/para H2 ratio

Context. The high degree of deuteration observed in some prestellar cores depends on the ortho-to-para H2 ratio through the H3+ fractionation. Aims. We want to constrain the ortho/para H2 ratio across the L183 prestellar core. This is mandatory to correctly describe the deuter- ation amplification phenomenon in depleted cores such as L183 and to relate the total (ortho+para) H2D+ abundance to the sole ortho-H2D+ column density measurement. Methods. To constrain this ortho/para H2 ratio and derive its profile, we make use of the N2D+ /N2H+ ratio and of the ortho-H2D+ observations performed across the prestellar core. We use two simple chemical models limited to an almost totally depleted core description. New dissociative recombination and trihydrogen cation-dihydrogen reaction rates (including all isotopologues) are presented in this paper and included in our models. Results. We estimate the H2D+ ortho/para ratio in the L183 cloud, and constrain the H2 ortho/para ratio : we show that it is varying across the prestellar core by at least an order of magnitude being still very high (~0.1) in most of the cloud. Our time-dependent model indicates that the prestellar core is presumably older than 1.5-2 x 10^5 years but that it may not be much older. We also show that it has reached its present density only recently and that its contraction from a uniform density cloud can be constrained. Conclusions. A proper understanding of deuteration chemistry cannot be attained without taking into account the whole ortho/para family of molecular hydrogen and trihydrogen cation isotopologues as their relations are of utmost importance in the global scheme. Tracing the ortho/para H2 ratio should also give useful constraints on the dynamical evolution of prestellar cores.
