An index formula for perturbed Dirac operators on Lie manifolds

We give an index formula for a class of Dirac operators coupled with unbounded potentials. More precisely, we study operators of the form P := D+ V, where D is a Dirac operators and V is an unbounded potential at infinity on a possibly non-compact manifold M_0. We assume that M_0 is a Lie manifold with compactification denoted M. Examples of Lie manifolds are provided by asymptotically Euclidean or asymptotically hyperbolic spaces. The potential V is required to be invertible outside a compact set K and V^{-1} extends to a smooth function on M\K that vanishes on all faces of M in a controlled way. Using tools from analysis on non-compact Riemannian manifolds, we show that the computation of the index of P reduces to the computation of the index of an elliptic pseudodifferential operator of order zero on M_0 that is a multiplication operator at infinity. The index formula for P can then be obtained from earlier results. The proof also yields similar index formulas for Callias-type pseudodifferential operators coupled with bounded potentials that are invertible at infinity on asymptotically commutative Lie manifolds, a class of manifolds that includes the scattering and double-edge calculi.

The $K$-groups and the index theory of certain comparison $C^*$-algebras

We compute the $K$-theory of comparison $C^*$-algebra associated to a manifold with corners. These comparison algebras are an example of the abstract pseudodifferential algebras introduced by Connes and Moscovici \cite{M3}. Our calculation is obtained by showing that the comparison algebras are a homomorphic image of a groupoid $C^*$-algebra. We then prove an index theorem with values in the $K$-theory groups of the comparison algebra.

Closed form asymptotics for local volatility models

We obtain new closed-form pricing formulas for contingent claims when the asset follows a Dupire-type local volatility model. To obtain the formulas we use the Dyson-Taylor commutator method that we have recently developed in [5, 6, 8] for short-time asymptotic expansions of heat kernels, and obtain a family of general closed-form approximate solutions for both the pricing kernel and derivative price. A bootstrap scheme allows us to extend our method to large time. We also perform analytic as well as a numerical error analysis, and compare our results to other known methods.

Approximate Solutions to Second Order Parabolic Equations I: analytic estimates

We establish a new type of local asymptotic formula for the Green's function ${\mathcal G}_t(x,y)$ of a uniformly parabolic linear operator $\partial_t - L$ with non-constant coefficients using dilations and Taylor expansions at a point $z=z(x,y)$, for a function $z$ with bounded derivatives such that $z(x,x)=x \in {\mathbb R}^N$. For $z(x,y) =x$, we recover the known, classical expansion obtained via pseudo-differential calculus. Our method is based on dilation at $z$, Dyson and Taylor series expansions, and the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff commutator formula. Our procedure leads to an elementary, algorithmic construction of approximate solutions to parabolic equations which are accurate to arbitrary prescribed order in the short-time limit. We establish mapping properties and precise error estimates in the exponentially weighted, $L^{p}$-type Sobolev spaces $W^{s,p}_a({\mathbb R}^N)$ that appear in practice.

Groupoids and an index theorem for conical pseudo-manifolds

We define an analytical index map and a topological index map for conical pseudomanifolds. These constructions generalize the analogous constructions used by Atiyah and Singer in the proof of their topological index theorem for a smooth, compact manifold $M$. A main ingredient is a non-commutative algebra that plays in our setting the role of $C_0(T^*M)$. We prove a Thom isomorphism between non-commutative algebras which gives a new example of wrong way functoriality in $K$-theory. We then give a new proof of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem using deformation groupoids and show how it generalizes to conical pseudomanifolds. We thus prove a topological index theorem for conical pseudomanifolds.

Sobolev spaces on Lie manifolds and regularity for polyhedral domains

We study some basic analytic questions related to differential operators on Lie manifolds, which are manifolds whose large scale geometry can be described by a a Lie algebra of vector fields on a compactification. We extend to Lie manifolds several classical results on Sobolev spaces, elliptic regularity, and mapping properties of pseudodifferential operators. A tubular neighborhood theorem for Lie submanifolds allows us also to extend to regular open subsets of Lie manifolds the classical results on traces of functions in suitable Sobolev spaces. Our main application is a regularity result on polyhedral domains $\PP \subset \RR^3$ using the weighted Sobolev spaces $\Kond{m}a(\PP)$. In particular, we show that there is no loss of $\Kond{m}a$--regularity for solutions of strongly elliptic systems with smooth coefficients. For the proof, we identify $\Kond{m}a(\PP)$ with the Sobolev spaces on $\PP$ associated to the metric $r_{\PP}^{-2} g_E$, where $g_E$ is the Euclidean metric and $r_{\PP}(x)$ is a smoothing of the Euclidean distance from $x$ to the set of singular points of $\PP$. A suitable compactification of the interior of $\PP$ then becomes a regular open subset of a Lie manifold. We also obtain the well-posedness of a non-standard boundary value problem on a smooth, bounded domain with boundary $\maO \subset \RR^n$ using weighted Sobolev spaces, where the weight is the distance to the boundary.

Pseudodifferential operators on manifolds with a Lie structure at infinity

Several examples of non-compact manifolds $M_0$ whose geometry at infinity is described by Lie algebras of vector fields $V \subset Γ(TM)$ (on a compactification of $M_0$ to a manifold with corners $M$) were studied by Melrose and his collaborators. In math.DG/0201202 and math.OA/0211305, the geometry of manifolds described by Lie algebras of vector fields -- baptised "manifolds with a Lie structure at infinity" there -- was studied from an axiomatic point of view. In this paper, we define and study the algebra $Ψ_{1,0,\VV}^\infty(M_0)$, which is an algebra of pseudodifferential operators canonically associated to a manifold $M_0$ with the Lie structure at infinity $V \subsetΓ(TM)$. We show that many of the properties of the usual algebra of pseudodifferential operators on a compact manifold extend to $Ψ_{1,0,V}^\infty(M_0)$. We also consider the algebra $\DiffV{*}(M_0)$ of differential operators on $M_0$ generated by $V$ and $\CI(M)$, and show that $Ψ_{1,0,V}^\infty(M_0)$ is a ``microlocalization'' of $\DiffV{*}(M_0)$. Finally, we introduce and study semi-classical and ``suspended'' versions of the algebra $Ψ_{1,0,V}^\infty(M_0)$. Our construction solves a problem posed by Melrose in his talk at the ICM in Kyoto.

A topological index theorem for manifolds with corners

We define an analytic index and prove a topological index theorem for a non-compact manifold $M\_0$ with poly-cylindrical ends. We prove that an elliptic operator $P$ on $M\_0$ has an invertible perturbation $P+R$ by a lower order operator if an only if its analytic index vanishes. As an application, we determine the $K$-theory groups of groupoid $C^*$--algebras of manifolds with corners.

The Thom isomorphism in gauge-equivariant K-theory

In a previous paper we have introduced the gauge-equivariant K-theory group of a bundle endowed with a continuous action of a bundle of compact Lie groups. These groups are the natural range for the analytic index of a family of gauge-invariant elliptic operators (i.e. a family of elliptic operators invariant with respect to the action of a bundle of compact groups). In this paper, we continue our study of gauge-equivariant K-theory. In particular, we introduce and study products, which helps us establish the Thom isomorphism in gauge-equivariant K-theory. Then we construct push-forward maps and define the topological index of a gauge-invariant family.

A non-commutative geometry approach to the representation theory of reductive $p$-adic groups: Homology of Hecke algebras, a survey and some new results

We survey some of the known results on the relation between the homology of the {\em full} Hecke algebra of a reductive $p$-adic group $G$, and the representation theory of $G$. Let us denote by $\CIc(G)$ the full Hecke algebra of $G$ and by $\Hp_*(\CIc(G))$ its periodic cyclic homology groups. Let $\hat G$ denote the admissible dual of $G$. One of the main points of this paper is that the groups $\Hp_*(\CIc(G))$ are, on the one hand, directly related to the topology of $\hat G$ and, on the other hand, the groups $\Hp_*(\CIc(G))$ are explicitly computable in terms of $G$ (essentially, in terms of the conjugacy classes of $G$ and the cohomology of their stabilizers). The relation between $\Hp_*(\CIc(G))$ and the topology of $\hat G$ is established as part of a more general principle relating $\Hp_*(A)$ to the topology of $\Prim(A)$, the primitive ideal spectrum of $A$, for any finite typee algebra $A$. We provide several new examples illustrating in detail this principle. We also prove in this paper a few new results, mostly in order to better explain and tie together the results that are presented here. For example, we compute the Hochschild homology of $\maO(X) \rtimes Γ$, the crossed product of the ring of regular functions on a smooth, complex algebraic variety $X$ by a finite group $Γ$. We also outline a very tentative program to use these results to construct and classify the cuspidal representations of $G$. At the end of the paper, we also recall the definitions of Hochschild and cyclic homology.

Interior numerical approximation of boundary value problems with a distributional data

We study the approximation properties of a harmonic function $u \in H\sp{1-k}(Ω)$, $k > 0$, on relatively compact sub-domain $A$ of $Ω$, using the Generalized Finite Element Method. For smooth, bounded domains $Ω$, we obtain that the GFEM--approximation $u_S$ satisfies $\|u - u_S\|_{H\sp{1}(A)} \le C h^γ\|u\|_{H\sp{1-k}(Ω)}$, where $h$ is the typical size of the ``elements'' defining the GFEM--space $S$ and $γ\ge 0 $ is such that the local approximation spaces contain all polynomials of degree $k + γ+ 1$. The main technical result is an extension of the classical super-approximation results of Nitsche and Schatz \cite{NitscheSchatz72} and, especially, \cite{NitscheSchatz74}. It turns out that, in addition to the usual ``energy'' Sobolev spaces $H^1$, one must use also the negative order Sobolev spaces $H\sp{-l}$, $l \ge 0$, which are defined by duality and contain the distributional boundary data.

Boundary value problems and layer potentials on manifolds with cylindrical ends

We extend the method of layer potentials to manifolds with boundary and cylindrical ends. To obtain this extension along the classical lines, we have to deal with several technical difficulties due to the non-compactness of the boundary, which prevents us from using the standard characterization of Fredholm and compact (pseudo-)differential operators between Sobolev spaces. Our approach, which involves the study of layer potentials depending on a parameter on compact manifolds as an intermediate step, yields the invertibility of the relevant boundary integral operators in the global, non-compact setting, which is rather unexpected. As an application, we prove the well-posedness of the non-homogeneous Dirichlet problem on manifolds with boundary and cylindrical ends. We also prove the existence of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, which we show to be a pseudodifferential operator in the calculus of pseudodifferential operators that are ``almost translation invariant at infinity,'' a calculus that is closely related to Melrose's b-calculus \cite{me81, meaps}, which we study in this paper. The proof of the convergence of the layer potentials and of the existence of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map are based on a good understanding of resolvents of elliptic operators that are translation invariant at infinity.

Singular integral operators on non-compact manifolds and analysis on polyhedral domains

We review the definition of a Lie manifold $(M, \VV)$ and the construction of the algebra $Ψ\sp{\infty}\sb{\VV}(M)$ of pseudodifferential operators on a Lie manifold $(M, \VV)$. We give some concrete Fredholmness conditions for pseudodifferential operators in $Ψ\sp{\infty}\sb{\VV}(M)$ for a large class of Lie manifolds $(M, \VV)$. These Fredholmness conditions have applications to boundary value problems on polyhedral domains and to non-linear PDEs on non-compact manifolds. As an application, we determine the spectrum of the Dirac operator on a manifold with multi-cylindrical ends.

On the geometry of Riemannian manifolds with a Lie structure at infinity

A manifold with a ``Lie structure at infinity'' is a non-compact manifold $M_0$ whose geometry is described by a compactification to a manifold with corners M and a Lie algebra of vector fields on M, subject to constraints only on $M \smallsetminus M_0$. The Lie structure at infinity on $M_0$ determines a metric on $M_0$ up to bi-Lipschitz equivalence. This leads to the natural problem of understanding the Riemannian geometry of these manifolds. We prove, for example, that on a manifold with a Lie structure at infinity the curvature tensor and its covariant derivatives are bounded. We also study a generalization of the geodesic spray and give conditions for these manifolds to have positive injectivity radius. An important motivation for our work is to study the analysis of geometric operators on manifolds with a Lie structure at infinity. For example, a manifold with cylindrical ends is a manifold with a Lie structure at infinity. The relevant analysis in this case is that of totally characteristic operators on a compact manifold with boundary equipped with a ``b-metric.'' The class of conformally compact manifolds, which was recently proved of interest in the study of Einstein's equation, also consists of manifolds with a Lie structure at infinity.

Complex powers and non-compact manifolds

We study the complex powers $A^{z}$ of an elliptic, strictly positive pseudodifferential operator $A$ using an axiomatic method that combines the approaches of Guillemin and Seeley. In particular, we introduce a class of algebras, ``extended Weyl algebras,'' whose definition was inspired by Guillemin's paper on the subject. An extended Weyl algebra can be thought of as an algebra of ``abstract pseudodifferential operators.'' Many algebras of pseudodifferential operators are extended Weyl algebras. Several results typical for algebras of pseudodifferential operators (asymptotic completeness, construction of Sobolev spaces, boundedness between apropriate Sobolev spaces, >...) generalize to extended Weyl algebras. Most important, our results may be used to obtain precise estimates at infinity for $A^{z}$, when $A > 0 $ is elliptic and defined on a non-compact manifold, provided that a suitable ideal of regularizing operators is specified (a submultiplicative $Ψ^*$--algebra). We shall use these results in a forthcoming paper to study pseudodifferential operators and Sobolev spaces on manifolds with a Lie structure at infinity (a certain class of non-compact manifolds).

Residues and homology for pseudodifferential operators on foliations

We study the Hochschild homology groups of the algebra of complete symbols on a foliated manifold $(M,F)$. The first step is to relate these groups to the Poisson homology of $(M,F)$ and of other related foliated manifolds. We then establish several general properties of the Poisson homology groups of foliated manifolds. As an example, we completely determine these Hochschild homology groups for the algebra of complete symbols on the irrational slope foliation of a torus (under some diophantine approximation assumptions). We also use our calculations to determine all residue traces on algebras of pseudodifferential operators along the leaves of a foliation.

An index for gauge-invariant operators and the Dixmier-Douady invariant

Let $\GR \to B$ be a bundle of compact Lie groups acting on a fiber bundle $Y \to B$. In this paper we introduce and study gauge-equivariant $K$-theory groups $K_\GR^i(Y)$. These groups satisfy the usual properties of the equivariant $K$-theory groups, but also some new phenomena arise due to the topological non-triviality of the bundle $\GR \to B$. As an application, we define a gauge-equivariant index for a family of elliptic operators $(P_b)_{b \in B}$ invariant with respect to the action of $\GR \to B$, which, in this approach, is an element of $K_\GR^0(B)$. We then give another definition of the gauge-equivariant index as an element of $K_0(C^*(\GR))$, the $K$-theory group of the Banach algebra $C^*(\GR)$. We prove that $K_0(C^*(\GR)) \simeq K^0_\GR(\GR)$ and that the two definitions of the gauge-equivariant index are equivalent. The algebra $C^*(\GR)$ is the algebra of continuous sections of a certain field of $C^*$-algebras with non-trivial Dixmier-Douady invariant. The gauge-equivariant $K$-theory groups are thus examples of twisted $K$-theory groups, which have recently proved themselves useful in the study of Ramond-Ramond fields.
