An index theorem for gauge-invariant families: The case of solvable groups

We define the gauge-equivariant index of a family of elliptic operators invariant with respect to the free action of a family $\GR \to B$ of Lie groups (these families are called ``gauge-invariant families'' in what follows). If the fibers of $\GR \to B$ are simply-connected and solvable, we compute the Chern character of the gauge-equivariant index, the result being given by an Atiyah-Singer type formula that incorporates also topological information about the bundle $\GR \to B$. The algebras of invariant pseudodifferential operators that we study, $\Psm {\infty}Y$ and $\PsS {\infty}Y$, are generalizations of ``parameter dependent'' algebras of pseudodifferential operators (with parameter in $\mathbb R^q$), so our results provide also an index theorem for elliptic, parameter dependent pseudodifferential operators. We apply these results to study Fredholm boundary conditions on a simplex.

Homology of algebras of families of pseudodifferential operators

We compute the Hochschild, cyclic, and periodic cyclic homology groups of algebras of families of Laurent complete symbols on manifolds with corners. We show in particular that the spectral sequence associated with Hochschild homology degenerates at $E^2$ and converges to Hochschild homology. As a byproduct, we deduce an identification of the space of residue traces on fibrations by manifolds with corners. In the process, we prove several general results about algebras of complete symbols on manifolds with corners.

Periodic cyclic homology of Iwahori-Hecke algebras

We determine the periodic cyclic homology of the Iwahori-Hecke algebras $\Hecke_q$, for $q \in \CC^*$ not a ``proper root of unity.'' (In this paper, by a {\em proper root of unity} we shall mean a root of unity other than 1.) Our method is based on a general result on periodic cyclic homology, which states that a ``weakly spectrum preserving'' morphism of finite type algebras induces an isomorphism in periodic cyclic homology. The concept of a weakly spectrum preserving morphism is defined in this paper, and most of our work is devoted to understanding this class of morphisms. Results of Kazhdan--Lusztig and Lusztig show that, for the indicated values of $q$, there exists a weakly spectrum preserving morphism $ϕ_q : \Hecke_q \to J$, to a fixed finite type algebra $J$. This proves that $ϕ_q$ induces an isomorphism in periodic cyclic homology and, in particular, that all algebras $\Hecke_q$ have the same periodic cyclic homology, for the indicated values of $q$. The periodic cyclic homology groups of the algebra $\Hecke_1$ can then be determined directly, using results of Karoubi and Burghelea, because it is the group algebra of an extended affine Weyl group.

Spectral invariance for certain algebras of pseudodifferential operators

We construct algebras of pseudodifferential operators on a continuous family groupoid G that are closed under holomorphic functional calculus, contain the algebra of all pseudodifferential operators of order 0 on G as a dense subalgebra, and reflect the smooth structure of the groupoid G, when G is smooth. As an application, we get a better understanding on the structure of inverses of elliptic pseudodifferential operators on classes of non-compact manifolds. For the construction of these algebras closed under holomorphic functional calculus, we develop three methods: one using two-sided semi-ideals, one using commutators, and one based on Schwartz spaces on the groupoid.

Analysis of geometric operators on open manifolds: A groupoid approach

We use algebras of pseudodifferential operators on groupoids to study geometric operators on non-compact manifolds and singular spaces. The first step is to establish that the geometric operators are in our algebras. This then leads to criteria for Fredholmness for geometric operators on suitable non-compact manifolds, as well as to an inductive procedure to study their essential spectrum. As an application, we answer a question of Melrose on the essential spectrum of the Laplace operator on manifolds with multi-cylindrical ends.

Homology of complete symbols and non-commutative geometry

We identify the periodic cyclic homology of the algebra of complete symbols on a differential groupoid $\GR$ in terms of the cohomology of $S^*(\GR)$, the cosphere bundle of $A(\GR)$, where $A(\GR)$ is the Lie algebroid of $\GR$. We also relate the Hochschild homology of this algebra with the homogeneous Poisson homology of the space $A^*(\GR) \smallsetminus 0 \cong S^*(\GR) \times (0,\infty)$, the dual of $A(\GR)$ with the zero section removed. We use then these results to compute the Hochschild and cyclic homologies of the algebras of complete symbols associated with manifolds with corners, when the corresponding Lie algebroid is rationally isomorphic to the tangent bundle.

Higher orbital integrals, Shalika germs, and the Hochschild homology of Hecke algebras

We give a detailed calculation of the Hochschild and cyclic homology of the algebra $\CIc(G)$ of locally constant, compactly supported functions on a reductive p-adic group G. We use these calculations to extend to arbitrary elements the definition the higher orbital integrals introduced in \cite{Blanc-Brylinski} for regular semisimple elements. Then we extend to higher orbital integrals some results of Shalika. We also investigate the effect of the ``induction morphism'' on Hochschild homology.

An index theorem for families invariant with respect to a bundle of Lie groups

We define the equivariant family index of a family of elliptic operators invariant with respect to the free action of a bundle $\GR$ of Lie groups. If the fibers of $\GR \to B$ are simply-connected solvable, we then compute the Chern character of the (equivariant family) index, the result being given by an Atiyah-Singer type formula. We also study traces on the corresponding algebras of pseudodifferential operators and obtain a local index formula for such families of invariant operators, using the Fedosov product. For topologically non-trivial bundles we have to use methods of non-commutative geometry. We discuss then as an application the construction of ``higher-eta invariants,'' which are morphisms $K_n(\PsS {\infty}Y) \to \CC$. The algebras of invariant pseudodifferential operators that we study, $\Psm {\infty}Y$ and $\PsS {\infty}Y$, are generalizations of ``parameter dependent'' algebras of pseudodifferential operators (with parameter in $\RR^q$), so our results provide also an index theorem for elliptic, parameter dependent pseudodifferential operators.

Groupoids and the integration of Lie algebroids

We show that a Lie algebroid on a stratified manifold is integrable if, and only if, its restriction to each strata is integrable. These results allow us to construct a large class of algebras of pseudodifferential operators.

Pseudodifferential operators on differential groupoids

We construct an algebra of pseudodifferential operators on each groupoid in a class that generalizes differentiable groupoids to allow manifolds with corners. We show that this construction encompasses many examples. The subalgebra of regularizing operators is identified with the smooth algebra of the groupoid, in the sense of non-commutative geometry. Symbol calculus for our algebra lies in the Poisson algebra of functions on the dual of the Lie algebroid of the groupoid. As applications, we give a new proof of the Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt theorem for Lie algebroids and a concrete quantization of the Lie-Poisson structure on the dual $A^*$ of a Lie algebroid.

Homology of pseudodifferential operators I. Manifolds with boundary

The Hochschild and cyclic homology groups are computed for the algebra of `cusp' pseudodifferential operators on any compact manifold with boundary. The index functional for this algebra is interpreted as a Hochschild 1-cocycle and evaluated in terms of extensions of the trace functionals on the two natural ideals, corresponding to the two filtrations by interior order and vanishing degree at the boundary, together with the exterior derivations of the algebra. This leads to an index formula which is a pseudodifferential extension of that of Atiyah, Patodi and Singer for Dirac operators; together with a symbolic term it involves the `eta' invariant on the suspended algebra over the boundary previously introduced by the first author.

Super-connections and non-commutative geometry

We show that Quillen's formalism for computing the Chern character of the index using superconnections extends to arbitrary operators with functional calculus. We thus remove the condition that the operators have, up to homotopy, a gap in the spectrum. This is proved using differential graded algebras and non-commutative differential forms. Our results also give a new proof of the coincidence of the Chern character of a difference bundle defined using super-connections with the classical definition.

The index of operators on foliated bundles

We compute the equivariant cohomology Chern character of the index of elliptic operators along the leaves of the foliation of a flat bundle. The proof is based on the study of certain algebras of pseudodifferential operators and uses techniques for analizing noncommutative algebras similar to those developed in Algebraic Topology, but in the framework of cyclic cohomology and noncommutative geometry.
