Cocycles with one exponent over partially hyperbolic systems

We consider Holder continuous linear cocycles over partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms. For fiber bunched cocycles with one Lyapunov exponent we show continuity of measurable invariant conformal structures and sub-bundles. Further, we establish a continuous version of Zimmer's Amenable Reduction Theorem. For cocycles over hyperbolic systems we also obtain polynomial growth estimates for the norm and quasiconformal distortion from the periodic data.

Local rigidity for Anosov automorphisms

We consider an irreducible Anosov automorphism L of a torus T^d such that no three eigenvalues have the same modulus. We show that L is locally rigid, that is, L is C^1 conjugate to any C^1-small perturbation f with the same periodic data. We also prove that toral automorphisms satisfying these assumptions are generic in SL(d,Z). Examples constructed in the Appendix by Rafael de la Llave show importance of the assumption on the eigenvalues.

Cohomology of GL(2,R)-valued cocycles over hyperbolic systems

We consider Holder continuous GL(2,R)-valued cocycles over a transitive Anosov diffeomorphism. We give a complete classification up to Holder cohomology of cocycles with one Lyapunov exponent and of cocycles that preserve two transverse Holder continuous sub-bundles. We prove that a measurable cohomology between two such cocycles is Holder continuous. We also show that conjugacy of periodic data for two such cocycles does not always imply cohomology, but a slightly stronger assumption does. We describe examples that indicate that our main results do not extend to general GL(2,R)-valued cocycles.

Linear cocycles over hyperbolic systems and criteria of conformality

In this paper we study Holder continuous linear cocycles over transitive Anosov diffeomorphisms. Under various conditions of relative pinching we establish properties including existence and continuity of measurable invariant sub-bundles and conformal structures. We use these results to obtain criteria for cocycles to be isometric or conformal in terms of their periodic data. We show that if the return maps at the periodic points are, in a sense, conformal or isometric then so is the cocycle itself with respect to a Holder continuous Riemannian metric.

Global rigidity for totally nonsymplectic Anosov Z^k actions

We consider a totally nonsymplectic Anosov action of Z^k which is either uniformly quasiconformal or pinched on each coarse Lyapunov distribution. We show that such an action on a torus is C^\infty--conjugate to an action by affine automorphisms. We also obtain similar global rigidity results for actions on an arbitrary compact manifold assuming that the coarse Lyapunov foliations are jointly integrable.

Dimensional characteristics of invariant measures for circle diffeomorphisms

We consider pointwise, box, and Hausdorff dimensions of invariant measures for circle diffeomorphisms. We discuss the cases of rational, Diophantine, and Liouville rotation numbers. Our main result is that for any Liouville number $τ$ there exists a $C^\infty$ circle diffeomorphism with rotation number $τ$ such that the pointwise and box dimensions of its unique invariant measure do not exist. Moreover, the lower pointwise and lower box dimensions can equal any value $0\le β\le 1$.

On Anosov diffeomorphisms with asymptotically conformal periodic data

We consider transitive Anosov diffeomorphisms for which every periodic orbit has only one positive and one negative Lyapunov exponent. We establish various properties of such systems including strong pinching, C^{1+β} smoothness of the Anosov splitting, and C^1 smoothness of measurable invariant conformal structures and distributions. We apply these results to volume preserving diffeomorphisms with two-dimensional stable and unstable distributions and diagonalizable derivatives of the return maps at periodic points. We show that a finite cover of such a diffeomorphism is smoothly conjugate to an Anosov automorphism of a torus. As a corollary we obtain local rigidity for such diffeomorphisms. We also establish a local rigidity result for Anosov diffeomorphisms in dimension three.

On classification of resonance-free Anosov Z^k actions

We consider actions of Z^k, k \ge 2, by Anosov diffeomorphisms which are uniformly quasiconformal on each coarse Lyapunov distribution. These actions generalize Cartan actions for which coarse Lyapunov distributions are one-dimensional. We show that, under certain non-resonance assumptions on the Lyapunov exponents, a finite cover of such an action is smoothly conjugate to an action by toral automorphisms.
