Transient regime in non-linear transport through many-level quantum dots

We investigate the nonstationary electronic transport in noninteracting nanostructures driven by a finite bias and time-dependent signals applied at their contacts to the leads. The systems are modelled by a tight-binding Hamiltonian and the transient currents are computed from the non-equilibrium Green-Keldysh formalism. The numerical implementation is not restricted to weak coupling to the leads and does not imply the wide-band limit assumption for the spectral width of the leads. As an application of the method we study in detail the transient behavior and the charge dynamics in single and double quantum dots connected to leads by a step-like potential, but the method allows as well the consideration of non-periodic potentials or short pulses. We show that when the higher energy levels of the isolated system are located within the bias window of the leads the transient current approaches the steady state in a non-oscillatory smooth fashion. At moderate coupling to the leads and fixed bias the transient acquires a step-like structure, the length of the steps increasing with the system size. The number of levels inside a finite bias window can be tuned by a constant gate potential. We find also that the transient behavior depends on the specific way of coupling the leads to the mesoscopic system.

Magnetotransport in a double quantum wire: Modeling using a scattering formalism built on the Lippmann-Schwinger equation

We model electronic transport through a double quantum wire in an external homogeneous perpendicular magnetic field using a scattering formalism built on the Lippmann-Schwinger equation. In the scattering region a window is opened between the parallel wires allowing for inter- and intra-wire scattering processes. Due to the parity breaking of the magnetic field the ensuing subband energy spectrum of the double wire system with its regimes of hole- and electron-like propagating modes leads to a more structure rich conductance as a function of the energy of the incoming waves than is seen in a single parabolically confined quantum wire. The more complex structure of the evanescent modes of the system also leaves its marks on the conductance.

Coherent magnetotransport spectroscopy in an edge-blocked double quantum wire with window and resonator coupling

We propose an electronic double quantum wire system that contains a pair of edge blocking potential and a coupling element in the middle barrier between two ballistic quantum wires. A window and a resonator coupling control between the parallel wires are discussed and compared for the enhancement of the interwire transfer processes in an appropriate magnetic field. We illustrate the results of the analysis by performing computational simulations on the conductance and probability density of electron waves in the window and resonator coupled double wire system.

Tuning of coupling modes in laterally parallel double open quantum dots

We consider electronic transport through laterally parallel double open quantum dots embedded in a quantum wire in a perpendicular magnetic field. The coupling modes of the dots are tunable by adjusting the strength of a central barrier and the applied magnetic field. Probability density and electron current density are calculated to demonstrate transport effects including magnetic blocking, magnetic turbulence, and a hole-like quasibound state feature. Fano to dip line-shape crossover in the conductance is found by varying the magnetic field.

The Fano regime of one-dot Aharonov-Bohm interferometers

We use the Landauer-Büttiker formalism to study the mesoscopic Fano effect in Aharonov-Bohm rings with an embedded two-dimensional noninteracting dot. The magnetic field dependence of the dot levels leads to a global shift of the Fano lines which becomes important for small ring/dot area ratios. As the magnetic field is varied the Fano dips move periodically from one side of the peak to the other, as reported by Kobayashi {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 88}, 256806 (2002)]. We show that this effect appears due to a specific magnetic control of the difference between the phase of the single nonresonant path via the free arm of the ring and the global phase of all trajectories involving resonant tunnelings through the dot.

A state with negative binding energy induced by coherent transport in a quantum wire

In a two-dimensional quantum wire in a perpendicular magnetic field with a smooth embedded repulsive scattering potential we find in the multimode conductance resonances caused by bound states with negative binding energy. These resonances are the counterexamples to well known dips in the conductance and evanescent states caused by quasi-bound states of attractive scattering centers in the wire.

Transport through a quantum ring, a dot and a barrier embedded in a nanowire in magnetic field

We investigate the transport through a quantum ring, a dot and a barrier embedded in a nanowire in a homogeneous perpendicular magnetic field. To be able to treat scattering potentials of finite extent in magnetic field we use a mixed momentum-coordinate representation to obtain an integral equation for the multiband scattering matrix. For a large embedded quantum ring we are able to obtain Aharanov-Bohm type of oscillations with superimposed narrow resonances caused by interaction with quasi-bound states in the ring. We also employ scattering matrix approach to calculate the conductance through a semi-extended barrier or well in the wire. The numerical implementations we resort to in order to describe the cases of weak and intermediate magnetic field allow us to produce high resolution maps of the ``near field'' scattering wave functions, which are used to shed light on the underlying scattering processes.

Multi-mode transport through a quantum nanowire with two embedded dots

We investigate the conductance of a quantum wire with two embedded quantum dots using a T-matrix approach based on the Lippmann-Schwinger formalism. The quantum dots are represented by a quantum well with Gaussian shape and the wire is two-dimensional with parabolic confinement in the transverse direction. In a broad wire the transport can assume a strong nonadiabatic character and the conductance manifests effects caused by intertwined inter- and intra-dot processes that are identified by analysis of the ``nearfield'' probability distribution of the transported electrons.

Coherent electronic transport in a multimode quantum channel with Gaussian-type scatterers

Coherent electron transport through a quantum channel in the presence of a general extended scattering potential is investigated using a T-matrix Lippmann-Schwinger approach. The formalism is applied to a quantum wire with Gaussian type scattering potentials, which can be used to model a single impurity, a quantum dot or more complicated structures in the wire. The well known dips in the conductance in the presence of attractive impurities is reproduced. A resonant transmission peak in the conductance is seen as the energy of the incident electron coincides with an energy level in the quantum dot. The conductance through a quantum wire in the presence of an asymmetric potential are also shown. In the case of a narrow potential parallel to the wire we find that two dips appear in the same subband which we ascribe to two quasi bound states originating from the next evanescent mode.

Net current generation in a 1D quantum ring at zero magnetic field

We study a non-adiabatic excitation of an electron system in a 1D quantum ring radiated by a short THz pulse. The response of two models, a continuous and discrete, is explored. By introducing a spatial asymmetry in the external perturbation a net current can be generated in the ring at a zero magnetic field. Effect of impurities and ratchets are investigated in combination with symmetric and asymmetric external excitation.

Impurity and spin effects on the magneto-spectroscopy of a THz-modulated nanostructure

We present a grid-free DFT model appropriate to explore the time evolution of electronic states in a semiconductor nanostructure. The model can be used to investigate both the linear and the nonlinear response of the system to an external short-time perturbation in the THz regime. We use the model to study the effects of impurities on the magneto-spectroscopy of a two-dimensional electron gas in a nanostructure excited by an intense THz radiation. We do observe a reduction in the binding energy of the impurity with increasing excitation strength, and at a finite magnetic field we find a slow onset of collective spin-oscillations that can be made to vanish with a stronger excitation.

Non-adiabatic current generation in a finite width semiconductor ring

We consider a model of a semiconductor quantum ring of finite width in a constant perpendicular magnetic field. We show how a current of the same order as the persistent current can be generated non-adiabatically by a short intensive pulse in the Tera-Hertz regime.

Orbital and spin magnetization of a confined electronic system in the transition between a quantum dot and a ring

In order to understand the orbital and spin magnetization of a confined electronic system we analyze these ground state properties in the transition from a quantum dot to a quantum ring of finite thickness. The Coulomb interaction between the electrons is treated in the Hartree and Hartree-Fock approximations and special care is taken to include also the contributions of the nonlocal current to the summation of the magnetic moments of the occupied states. We identify changes in the many-body structure of the ground state and in the magnetization curves versus the magnetic field and other parameters characterizing the system. We compare the results of two models for quantum dots (or rings), one with the electrons moving continuously in the system, and one with the electrons moving on a lattice.

Characterization of Bernstein modes in quantum dots

The dipole modes of non-parabolic quantum dots are studied by means of their current and density patterns as well as with their local absorption distribution. The anticrossing of the so-called Bernstein modes originates from the coupling with electron-hole excitations of the two Landau bands which are occupied at the corresponding magnetic fields. Non-quadratic terms in the potential cause an energy separation between bulk and edge current modes in the anticrossing region. On a local scale the fragmented peaks absorb energy in complementary spatial regions which evolve with the magnetic field.

From single dots to interacting arrays

We explore the structural changes in charge the density and the electron configuration of quantum dots caused by the presence of other dots in an array, and the interaction of neighboring dots. We discuss what recent measurements and calculation of the far-infrared absorption reveal about almost isolated quantum dots and investigate some aspects of the complex transition from isolated dots to dots with strongly overlapping electron density. We also address the the effects on the magnetization of such dot array.

Hartree-Fock dynamics in highly excited quantum dots

Time-dependent Hartree-Fock theory is used to describe density oscillations of symmetry-unrestricted two-dimensional nanostructures. In the small amplitude limit the results reproduce those obtained within a perturbative approach such as the linearized time-dependent Hartree-Fock one. The nonlinear regime is explored by studying large amplitude oscillations in a non-parabolic potential, which are shown to introduce a strong coupling with internal degrees of freedom. This excitation of internal modes, mainly of monopole and quadrupole character, results in sizeable modifications of the dipole absorption.

Far-Infrared Excitations below the Kohn Mode: Internal Motion in a Quantum Dot

We have investigated the far-infrared response of quantum dots in modulation doped GaAs heterostructures. We observe novel modes at frequencies below the center-of-mass Kohn mode. Comparison with Hartree-RPA calculations show that these modes arise from the flattened potential in our field-effect confined quantum dots. They reflect pronounced relative motion of the charge density with respect to the center-of-mass.

Hysteresis effect due to the exchange Coulomb interaction in short-period superlattices in tilted magnetic fields

We calculate the ground-state of a two-dimensional electron gas in a short-period lateral potential in magnetic field, with the Coulomb electron-electron interaction included in the Hartree-Fock approximation. For a sufficiently short period the dominant Coulomb effects are determined by the exchange interaction. We find numerical solutions of the self-consistent equations that have hysteresis properties when the magnetic field is tilted and increased, such that the perpendicular component is always constant. This behavior is a result of the interplay of the exchange interaction with the energy dispersion and the spin splitting. We suggest that hysteresis effects of this type could be observable in magneto-transport and magnetization experiments on quantum-wire and quantum-dot superlattices.
