Magnetization in short-period mesoscopic electron systems

We calculate the magnetization of the two-dimensional electron gas in a short-period lateral superlattice, with the Coulomb interaction included in Hartree and Hartree-Fock approximations. We compare the results for a finite, mesoscopic system modulated by a periodic potential, with the results for the infinite periodic system. In addition to the expected strong exchange effects, the size of the system, the type and the strength of the lateral modulation leave their fingerprints on the magnetization.

Magnetization of noncircular quantum dots

We calculate the magnetization of quantum dots deviating from circular symmetry for noninteracting electrons or electrons interacting according to the Hartree approximation. For few electrons the magnetization is found to depend on their number, and the shape of the dot. The magnetization is an ideal probe into the many-electron state of a quantum dot.

Finite size effects in the magnetization of periodic mesoscopic systems

We calculate the orbital magnetization of a confined 2DEG as a function of the number of electrons in the system. Size effects are investigated by systematically increasing the area of the confining region. The results for the finite system are compared to an infinite one, where the magnetization is calculated in the thermodynamic limit. In all calculations the electron-electron interaction is included in the Hartree approximation.

Influence of shape of quantum dots on their far-infrared absorption

We investigate the effects of the shape of quantum dots on their far-infrared absorption in an external magnetic field by a model calculation. We focus our attention on dots with a parabolic confinement potential deviating from the common circular symmetry, and dots having circular doughnut shape. For a confinement where the generalized Kohn theorem does not hold we are able to interprete the results in terms of a mixture of a center-of-mass mode and collective modes reflecting an excitation of relative motion of the electrons. The calculations are performed within the time-dependent Hartree approximation and the results are compared to available experimental results.

Memorization of short-range potential fluctuations in Landau levels

We calculate energy spectra of a two-dimensional electron system in a perpendicular magnetic field and periodic potentials of short periods. The Coulomb interaction is included within a screened Hartree-Fock approximation. The electrostatic screening is poor and the exchange interaction amplifies the energy dispersion. We obtain, by numerical iterations, self-consistent solutions that have a hysteresis-like property. With increasing amplitude of the external potential the energy dispersion and the electron density become periodic, and they remain stable when the external potential is reduced to zero. We explain this property in physical terms and speculate that a real system could memorize short-range potential fluctuations after the potential has been turned off.

Collective modes and the far-infrared absorption of the two-dimensional electron gas in a periodic quantizing magnetic field

We investigate the far-infrared (FIR) absorption of a two-dimensional electron gas in a periodically modulated quantizing magnetic field. The magnetic field varies along only one spatial direction and the external time-dependent electric field is linearly polarized along that axis. The mutual Coulomb interaction of the electrons is treated self-consistently in the ground state and in the absorption calculation within the Hartree approximation. The effects of the magnetic material on top of the heterostructure as a grating coupler is included in the time-dependent incident FIR electric field. We show that similar to an electric modulation, the absorption can be directly correlated to the underlying electronic energy bands. In addition, the magnetic modulation leads to absorption spectra with a richer structure due to the quite different static response of the electron density to the modulation.

The far-infrared absorption of a periodic 2DEG in the transition regime between weak and strong modulation

We study the optical absorption of arrays of quantum dots and antidots in a perpendicular homogeneous magnetic field. The electronic system is described quantum mechanically using a Hartree approximation for the mutual Coulomb interaction of the electrons. The evolution of the absorption is traced from the homogeneous to the strongly modulated case identifying the ensuing collective modes, the magnetoplasmons, and their correlations with inherent length scales of the system.

The FIR-absorption of short period quantum wires and the transition from one to two dimensions

We investigate the FIR-absorption of short period parallel quantum wires in a perpendicular quantizing magnetic field. The external time-dependent electric field is linearly polarized along the wire modulation. The mutual Coulomb interaction of the electrons is treated self-consistently in the ground state and in the absorption calculation within the Hartree approximation. We consider the effects of a metal gate grating coupler, with the same or with a different period as the wire modulation, on the absorption. The evolution of the magnetoplasmon in the nonlocal region where it is split into several Bernstein modes is discussed in the transition from: narrow to broad wires, and isolated to overlapping wires. We show that in the case of narrow and not strongly modulated wires the absorption can be directly correlated with the underlying electronic bandstructure.

Spin-density and charge-density excitations in quantum wires

We study an interacting electron gas in a quantum wire within the Hartree-Fock random phase approximation. Vertex corrections to the electron spin polarizability due to the electronic exchange interaction are important giving rise to spin-density excitations (SDE) with large oscillator strength shifted to lower energies with respect to single-particle states. The energy of intersubband SDE oscillates with the number of subbands occupied and has a minimum when a subband energy is close to the chemical potential. Intrasubband SDE have a linear dispersion at small wave-vectors. The corresponding sound velocity is reduced with respect to the Fermi velocity due to exchange interaction within the occupied subbands and exchange screening caused by virtual transitions to upper subbands. For intersubband and intrasubband charge-density excitations (CDE) vertex corrections are of less importance. For only a single subband occupied the screening of CDE and SDE in the Tomonaga-Luttinger model due to virtual transitions to upper subband is studied, where the virtual transitions are treated within the Hartree-Fock approximation. The calculations are in good qualitative agreement with experiments.

Is the Hofstadter energy spectrum observable in far-infrared absorption?

The far-infrared absorption of a periodically modulated two-dimensional electron gas in a perpendicular constant magnetic field is calculated self-consistently within the Hartree approximation. For vanishing modulation the magnetoplasmon dispersion shows simple anticrossings with harmonics of the cyclotron resonance, as expected. For increasing modulation we identify intra- and intersubband magnetoplasmon modes charaterized by the number of flux quanta through each unit cell of the periodic potential.

Manifestation of the Hofstadter butterfly in far-infrared absorption

The far-infrared absorption of a two-dimensional electron gas with a square-lattice modulation in a perpendicular constant magnetic field is calculated self-consistently within the Hartree approximation. For strong modulation and short period we obtain intra- and intersubband magnetoplasmon modes reflecting the subbands of the Hofstadter butterfly in two or more Landau bands. The character of the absorption and the correlation of the peaks to the number of flux quanta through each unit cell of the periodic potential depends strongly on the location of the chemical potential with respect to the subbands, or what is the same, on the density of electrons in the system.

The effects of compressible and incompressible states on the FIR-absorption of quantum wires and dots in a magnetic field

We investigate the effects of compressible and incompressible states on the FIR-absorption of quantum wires and dots in a homogeneous perpendicular magnetic field. The electron-electron interaction is treated in the Hartree approximation at a finite low temperature. The calculated dispersion of the collective excitations reproduces several experimental results.

Collective Excitations in Realistic Quantum Wires

We have used the Hartree-Fock Random Phase Approximation (HF-RPA) to study the interacting electron gas in a quantum wire. The spectra of intersubband spin-flip excitations reveal a considerable red shift with respect to single-particle HF energies. That signals on appearance of collective intersubband spind-density excitations due to the exchange interaction. The long wavelength dispersions of the intrasubband collective spin-density excitations are linear, but the sound velocities are renormalised due to the exchange interaction and screening. The in-phase intrasubband charge-density excitation has the long wavelength form $q[-\ln(q)]^{1/2}$. We found good qualitative agreement of our results with experimental observations.

Hofstadter-type energy spectra in lateral superlattices defined by periodic magnetic and electrostatic fields

We calculate the energy spectrum of an electron moving in a two-dimensional lattice which is defined by an electric potential and an applied perpendicular magnetic field modulated by a periodic surface magnetization. The spatial direction of this magnetization introduces complex phases into the Fourier coefficients of the magnetic field. We investigate the effect of the relative phases between electric and magnetic modulation on band width and internal structure of the Landau levels.

Effects of screening on the Hofstadter butterfly

We study, within the Hartree approximation, the effects of the electron-electron interaction on the energy spectrum of a two-dimensional electron gas in a perpendicular homogeneous magnetic field and a lateral superlattice potential with square symmetry. Due to the strong screening effects, the bandwidth of the Landau bands oscillates strongly with their filling. For short enough periods and strong enough modulation of the superlattice potential, the miniband structure of the Landau bands can be resolved in the thermodynamic density of states.

The Hofstadter Energy Spectrum for an Interacting 2DEG

We study the effects of the Coulomb interactions between electrons on the Hofstadter butterfly, which characterizes the subband structure of the Landau levels of a two-dimensional electron gas in a perpendicular homogeneous magnetic field and a periodic lateral superlattice potential. The interactions essentially preserve the intricate gap structure of the Hofstadter spectra, but with a lower symmetry that depends on the filling of the Landau bands. For short enough periods and strong enough modulation the miniband structure can be resolved in the thermodynamic density of states.

Spin effects in a confined 2DEG: Enhancement of the g-factor, spin-inversion states and their far-infrared absorption

We investigate several spin-related phenomena in a confined two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) using the Hartree-Fock approximation for the mutual Coulomb interaction of the electrons. The exchange term of the interaction causes a large splitting of the spin levels whenever the chemical potential lies within a Landau band (LB). This splitting can be reinterpreted as an enhancement of an effective g-factor, g*. The increase of g* when a LB is half filled can be accompanied by a spontaneous formation of a static spin-inversion state (SIS) whose details depend on the system sision state (SIS) whose details depend on the system size. The coupling of the states of higher LB's into the lowest band by the Coulomb interaction of the 2DEG is essential for the SIS to occur. The far-infrared absorption of the system, relatively insensitive to the spin splitting, develops clear signs of the SIS.
