On perturbations that preserve the connectivity properties in tree percolations

We consider a general bond percolation on an infinite locally finite tree, where the edge retention probabilities $p_e$ are replaced by $\min\{1,q_{|e|}p_e\}$, where $\{q_n\}_{n\ge 1}$ is a sequence of positive perturbation factors and $|e|$ denotes the distance between the edge $e$ and the root. If the original percolation model admits infinite clusters, it is of interest to investigate under which perturbations $0<q_n\le 1$ this connectivity property is preserved. Conversely, if the original percolation does not admit infinite clusters, we are led to study the stability of such a property under perturbations satisfying $q_n\ge 1$. In both cases, under minimal assumptions on the original model, we show that the percolative behaviour is stable against certain quantitative non-trivial perturbations. We also discuss an application of our results to the Erd\H{o}s similarity conjecture for Cantor sets.

Fourier dimension of Mandelbrot cascades on planar curves

We consider multifractal Mandelbrot cascades supported on planar $C^2$ curves with nonvanishing curvature and show that their Fourier dimension is as large as possible, i.e., equal to the infimum of the lower pointwise dimension of the measure.

Sharp Favard length of random Cantor sets

We show that for a large class of planar $1$-dimensional random fractals $S$, the Favard length $\operatorname{Fav}(S(r))$ of the neighborhood $S(r)$ is comparable to $\log^{-1}(1/r)$, matching a universal lower bound; up to now, this was only known in expectation for a few concrete models. In particular, we show that there exist $1$-Ahlfors regular sets with the fastest possible Favard length decay. For a wide class of planar one-dimensional "grid random fractals", including fractal percolation and its Ahlfors-regular variants, we further show that $\operatorname{Fav}(S(r))/\log(1/r)$ converges almost surely, and we identify the limit explicitly. Furthermore, we prove that for some $1$-dimensional Ahlfors-regular random fractals $S$, the Favard length of $S(r)$ decays instead like $\log\log(1/r)/\log(1/r)$, showing that the $1/\log(1/r)$ decay is not universal among random fractals, as might be expected from previous results.

Fourier dimension of Mandelbrot multiplicative cascades

We investigate the Fourier dimension, $\dim_Fμ$, of Mandelbrot multiplicative cascade measures $μ$ on the $d$-dimensional unit cube. We show that if $μ$ is the cascade measure generated by a sub-exponential random variable then \[\dim_Fμ=\min\{2,\dim_2μ\}\,,\] where $\dim_2μ$ is the correlation dimension of $μ$ and it has an explicit formula. For cascades on the circle $S\subset\mathbb{R}^2$, we obtain \[\dim_Fμ\ge\frac{\dim_2μ}{2+\dim_2μ}\,.\]

The largest slice of fractal percolation

For each $k\ge 3$, we determine the dimensional threshold for planar fractal percolation to contain $k$ collinear points. In the critical case of dimension $1$, the largest linear slice of fractal percolation is a Cantor set of zero Hausdorff dimension. We investigate its size in terms of generalized Hausdorff measures.

Multifractal analysis for the pointwise Assouad dimension of self-similar measures

We quantify the pointwise doubling properties of self-similar measures using the notion of pointwise Assouad dimension. We show that all self-similar measures satisfying the open set condition are pointwise doubling in a set of full Hausdorff dimension, despite the fact that they can in general be non-doubling in a set of full Hausdorff measure. More generally, we carry out multifractal analysis by determining the Hausdorff dimension of the level sets of the pointwise Assouad dimension.

On dimensions of visible parts of self-similar sets with finite rotation groups

We derive an upper bound for the Assouad dimension of visible parts of self-similar sets generated by iterated function systems with finite rotation groups and satisfying the open set condition. The bound is valid for all visible parts and it depends on the penetrable part of the set, which is a concept defined in this paper. As a corollary, we obtain in the planar case that if the projection is a finite or countable union of intervals then the visible part is 1-dimensional. We also prove that the Assouad dimension of a visible part is strictly smaller than the Hausdorff dimension of the set provided the projection contains interior points.

New bounds on Cantor maximal operators

We prove $L^p$ bounds for the maximal operators associated to an Ahlfors-regular variant of fractal percolation. Our bounds improve upon those obtained by I. Łaba and M. Pramanik and in some cases are sharp up to the endpoint. A consequence of our main result is that there exist Ahlfors-regular Salem Cantor sets of any dimension $>1/2$ such that the associated maximal operator is bounded on $L^2(\mathbb{R})$. We follow the overall scheme of Łaba-Pramanik for the analytic part of the argument, while the probabilistic part is instead inspired by our earlier work on intersection properties of random measures.

Random perfect information games

The paper proposes a natural measure space of zero-sum perfect information games with upper semicontinuous payoffs. Each game is specified by the game tree, and by the assignment of the active player and of the capacity to each node of the tree. The payoff in a game is defined as the infimum of the capacity over the nodes that have been visited during the play. The active player, the number of children, and the capacity are drawn from a given joint distribution independently across the nodes. We characterize the cumulative distribution function of the value $v$ using the fixed points of the so-called value generating function. The characterization leads to a necessary and sufficient condition for the event $v \geq k$ to occur with positive probability. We also study probabilistic properties of the set of Player I's $k$-optimal strategies and the corresponding plays.

Intermediate value property for the Assouad dimension of measures

Hare, Mendivil, and Zuberman have recently shown that if $X$ is a compact subset of the reals and of non-zero Assouad dimension $\dim_A X$, then for all $s>\dim_A X$, $X$ supports measures with Assouad dimension $s$. We generalise this result to arbitrary complete metric spaces.

Covering the Sierpiński carpet with tubes

We show that non-trivial $\times N$-invariant sets in $[0,1]^d$, such as the Sierpiński carpet and the Sierpiński sponge, are tube-null, that is, they can be covered by a union of tubular neighbourhoods of lines of arbitrarily small total volume. This introduces a new class of tube-null sets of dimension strictly between $d-1$ and $d$. We utilize ergodic-theoretic methods to decompose the set into finitely many parts, each of which projects onto a set of Hausdorff dimension less than $1$ in some direction. We also discuss coverings by tubes for other self-similar sets, and present various applications.

Fractal percolation and quasisymmetric mappings

We study the conformal dimension of fractal percolation and show that, almost surely, the conformal dimension of a fractal percolation is strictly smaller than its Hausdorff dimension.

The doubling metric and doubling measures

We introduce the so--called doubling metric on the collection of non--empty bounded open subsets of a metric space. Given a subset $U$ of a metric space $X$, the predecessor $U_{*}$ of $U$ is defined by doubling the radii of all open balls contained inside $U$, and taking their union. If $U$ is open, the predecessor of $U$ is an open set containing $U$. The directed doubling distance between $U$ and another subset $V$ is the number of times that the predecessor operation needs to be applied to $U$ to obtain a set that contains $V$. Finally, the doubling distance between $U$ and $V$ is the maximum of the directed distance between $U$ and $V$ and the directed distance between $V$ and $U$.

Projections of Poisson cut-outs in the Heisenberg group and the visual $3$-sphere

We study projectional properties of Poisson cut-out sets $E$ in non-Euclidean spaces. In the first Heisenbeg group, endowed with the Korányi metric, we show that the Hausdorff dimension of the vertical projection $π(E)$ (projection along the center of the Heisenberg group) almost surely equals $\min\{2,dim_H(E)\}$ and that $π(E)$ has non-empty interior if $dim_H(E)>2$. As a corollary, this allows us to determine the Hausdorff dimension of $E$ with respect to the Euclidean metric in terms of its Heisenberg Hausdorff dimension $dim_H (E)$. We also study projections in the one-point compactification of the Heisenberg group, that is, the $3$-sphere $S^3$ endowed with the visual metric $d$ obtained by identifying $S^3$ with the boundary of the complex hyperbolic plane. In $S^3$, we prove a projection result that holds simultaneously for all radial projections (projections along so called "chains"). This shows that the Poisson cut-outs in $S^3$ satisfy a strong version of the Marstrand's projection theorem, without any exceptional directions.

Volume growth of quasihyperbolic balls

The purpose of this paper is to study the notion of the quasihyperbolic volume and to find growth estimates for the quasihyperbolic volume of balls in a domain $G \subset {\mathbb R}^n\,$ in terms of the radii.

Patterns in Random Fractals

We characterize the existence of certain geometric configurations in the fractal percolation limit set $A$ in terms of the almost sure dimension of $A$. Some examples of the configurations we study are: homothetic copies of finite sets, angles, distances, and volumes of simplices. In the spirit of relative Szemerédi theorems for random discrete sets, we also consider the corresponding problem for sets of positive $ν$-measure, where $ν$ is the natural measure on $A$. In both cases we identify the dimension threshold for each class of configurations. These results are obtained by investigating the intersections of the products of $m$ independent realizations of $A$ with transversal planes and, more generally, algebraic varieties, and extend some well known features of independent percolation on trees to a setting with long-range dependencies.

Asymptotically sharp dimension estimates for $k$-porous sets

In $\mathbb{R}^n$, we establish an asymptotically sharp upper bound for the upper Minkowski dimension of $k$-porous sets having holes of certain size near every point in $k$ orthogonal directions at all small scales. This bound tends to $n-k$ as $k$-porosity tends to its maximum value.
