Packing dimension and Ahlfors regularity of porous sets in metric spaces

Let $X$ be a metric measure space with an $s$-regular measure $μ$. We prove that if $A\subset X$ is $\varrho$-porous, then $\dim_{\mathrm{p}}(A)\le s-c\varrho^s$ where $\dim_{\mathrm{p}}$ is the packing dimension and $c$ is a positive constant which depends on $s$ and the structure constants of $μ$. This is an analogue of a well known asymptotically sharp result in Euclidean spaces. We illustrate by an example that the corresponding result is not valid if $μ$ is a doubling measure. However, in the doubling case we find a fixed $N\subset X$ with $μ(N)=0$ such that $\dim_{\mathrm{p}}(A)\le\dim_{\mathrm{p}}(X)-c(\log\tfrac 1\varrho)^{-1}\varrho^t$ for all $\varrho$-porous sets $A\subset X\setminus N$. Here $c$ and $t$ are constants which depend on the structure constant of $μ$. Finally, we characterize uniformly porous sets in complete $s$-regular metric spaces in terms of regular sets by verifying that $A$ is uniformly porous if and only if there is $t<s$ and a $t$-regular set $F$ such that $A\subset F$.

Conical upper density theorems and porosity of measures

We study how measures with finite lower density are distributed around $(n-m)$-planes in small balls in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We also discuss relations between conical upper density theorems and porosity. Our results may be applied to a large collection of Hausdorff and packing type measures.

Nonsymmetric conical upper density and $k$-porosity

We study how the Hausdorff measure is distributed in nonsymmetric narrow cones in $\mathbb{R}^n$. As an application, we find an upper bound close to $n-k$ for the Hausdorff dimension of sets with large $k$-porosity. With $k$-porous sets we mean sets which have holes in $k$ different directions on every small scale.

Random cutout sets with spatially inhomogeneous intensities

We study the Hausdorff dimension of Poissonian cutout sets defined via inhomogeneous intensity measures on Ahlfors-regular metric spaces. We obtain formulas for the Hausdorff dimension of such cutouts in self-similar and self-conformal spaces using the multifractal decomposition of the average densities for the natural measures.

Hitting probabilities of random covering sets in tori and metric spaces

We provide sharp lower and upper bounds for the Hausdorff dimension of the intersection of a typical random covering set with a fixed analytic set both in Ahlfors regular metric spaces and in the $d$-dimensional torus. In metric spaces, we consider covering sets generated by balls and, in the torus, we deal with general analytic generating sets.

A class of random Cantor measures, with applications

We survey some of our recent results on the geometry of spatially independent martingales, in a more concrete setting that allows for shorter, direct proofs, yet is general enough for several applications and contains the well-known fractal percolation measure. We study self-convolutions and Fourier decay of measures in our class, and present applications of these results to the restriction problem for fractal measures, and the connection between arithmetic structure and Fourier decay.

Local dimensions in Moran constructions

We study the dimensional properties of Moran sets and Moran measures in doubling metric spaces. In particular, we consider local dimensions and $L^q$-dimensions. We generalize and extend several existing results in this area.

Dimensions of random covering sets in Riemann manifolds

Let ${\pmb M}$, ${\pmb N}$ and ${\pmb K}$ be $d$-dimensional Riemann manifolds. Assume that ${\bf A}:=(A_n)_{n\in{\Bbb N}}$ is a sequence of Lebesgue measurable subsets of ${\pmb M}$ satisfying a necessary density condition and ${\bf x}:=(x_n)_{n\in {\Bbb N}}$ is a sequence of independent random variables which are distributed on ${\pmb K}$ according to a measure which is not purely singular with respect to the Riemann volume. We give a formula for the almost sure value of the Hausdorff dimension of random covering sets ${\bf E}({\bf x},{\bf A}):=\limsup_{n\to\infty}A_n(x_n)\subset {\pmb N}$. Here $A_n(x_n)$ is a diffeomorphic image of $A_n$ depending on $x_n$. We also verify that the packing dimensions of ${\bf E}({\bf x},{\bf A})$ equal $d$ almost surely.

Fractal percolation, porosity, and dimension

We study the porosity properties of fractal percolation sets $E\subset\mathbb{R}^d$. Among other things, for all $0<\varepsilon<\tfrac12$, we obtain dimension bounds for the set of exceptional points where the upper porosity of $E$ is less than $\tfrac12-\varepsilon$, or the lower porosity is larger than $\varepsilon$. Our method works also for inhomogeneous fractal percolation and more general random sets whose offspring distribution gives rise to a Galton-Watson process.

Spatially independent martingales, intersections, and applications

We define a class of random measures, spatially independent martingales, which we view as a natural generalisation of the canonical random discrete set, and which includes as special cases many variants of fractal percolation and Poissonian cut-outs. We pair the random measures with deterministic families of parametrised measures $\{η_t\}_t$, and show that under some natural checkable conditions, a.s. the total measure of the intersections is Hölder continuous as a function of $t$. This continuity phenomenon turns out to underpin a large amount of geometric information about these measures, allowing us to unify and substantially generalize a large number of existing results on the geometry of random Cantor sets and measures, as well as obtaining many new ones. Among other things, for large classes of random fractals we establish (a) very strong versions of the Marstrand-Mattila projection and slicing results, as well as dimension conservation, (b) slicing results with respect to algebraic curves and self-similar sets, (c) smoothness of convolutions of measures, including self-convolutions, and nonempty interior for sumsets, (d) rapid Fourier decay. Among other applications, we obtain an answer to a question of I. Łaba in connection to the restriction problem for fractal measures.

Sets which are not tube null and intersection properties of random measures

We show that in $\mathbb{R}^d$ there are purely unrectifiable sets of Hausdorff (and even box counting) dimension $d-1$ which are not tube null, settling a question of Carbery, Soria and Vargas, and improving a number of results by the same authors and by Carbery. Our method extends also to "convex tube null sets", establishing a contrast with a theorem of Alberti, Csörnyei and Preiss on Lipschitz-null sets. The sets we construct are random, and the proofs depend on intersection properties of certain random fractal measures with curves.

Projections of random covering sets

We show that, almost surely, the Hausdorff dimension $s_0$ of a random covering set is preserved under all orthogonal projections to linear subspaces with dimension $k>s_0$. The result holds for random covering sets with a generating sequence of ball-like sets, and is obtained by investigating orthogonal projections of a class of random Cantor sets.

A note on the hitting probabilities of random covering sets

Let $E=\limsup\limits_{n\to\infty}(g_n+ξ_n)$ be the random covering set on the torus $\mathbb{T}^d$, where $\{g_n\}$ is a sequence of ball-like sets and $ξ_n$ is a sequence of independent random variables uniformly distributed on $\T^d$. We prove that $E\cap F\neq\emptyset$ almost surely whenever $F\subset\mathbb{T}^d$ is an analytic set with Hausdorff dimension, $\dim_H(F)>d-α$, where $α$ is the almost sure Hausdorff dimension of $E$. Moreover, examples are given to show that the condition on $\dim_H(F)$ cannot be replaced by the packing dimension of $F$.

Local multifractal analysis in metric spaces

We study the local dimensions and local multifractal properties of measures on doubling metric spaces. Our aim is twofold. On one hand, we show that there are plenty of multifractal type measures in all metric spaces which satisfy only mild regularity conditions. On the other hand, we consider a local spectrum that can be used to gain finer information on the local behaviour of measures than its global counterpart.

Hausdorff dimension of affine random covering sets in torus

We calculate the almost sure Hausdorff dimension of the random covering set $\limsup_{n\to\infty}(g_n + ξ_n)$ in $d$-dimensional torus $\mathbb T^d$, where the sets $g_n\subset\mathbb T^d$ are parallelepipeds, or more generally, linear images of a set with nonempty interior, and $ξ_n\in\mathbb T^d$ are independent and uniformly distributed random points. The dimension formula, derived from the singular values of the linear mappings, holds provided that the sequences of the singular values are decreasing.

Dimension, entropy, and the local distribution of measures

We present a general approach to the study of the local distribution of measures on Euclidean spaces, based on local entropy averages. As concrete applications, we unify, generalize, and simplify a number of recent results on local homogeneity, porosity and conical densities of measures.

Local homogeneity and dimensions of measures

We introduce two new concepts, local homogeneity and local L^q-spectrum, both of which are tools that can be used in studying the local structure of measures. The main emphasis is given to the examination of local dimensions of measures in doubling metric spaces. As an application, we reach a new level of generality and obtain new estimates in the study of conical densities and porous measures.
