Impact of Spin-Orbit Coupling on Superconductivity in Rhombohedral Graphene

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) has played an important role in many topological and correlated electron materials. In graphene-based systems, SOC induced by transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) at proximity was shown to drive topological states and strengthen superconductivity. However, in rhombohedral multilayer graphene, a robust platform for electron correlation and topology, superconductivity and the role of SOC remain largely unexplored. Here we report transport measurements of TMD-proximitized rhombohedral trilayer graphene (RTG). We observed a new hole-doped superconducting state SC4 with Tc = 230 mK. On the electron-doped side, we identified a new isospin-symmetry breaking three-quarter-metal (TQM) phase and observed the nearby weak superconducting state SC3 is significantly enhanced. Surprisingly, the original superconducting state SC1 in bare RTG is strongly suppressed in the presence of TMD - opposite to the effect of SOC on all other graphene superconductivities. Our observations form the basis of exploring superconductivity and non-Abelian quasiparticles in rhombohedral graphene devices.

Two Types of 3D Quantum Hall Effects in Multilayer WTe$_2$

Interplay between the topological surface states and bulk states gives rise to diverse exotic transport phenomena in topological materials. The recently proposed Weyl orbit in topological semimetals in the presence of magnetic field is a remarkable example. This novel closed magnetic orbit consists of Fermi arcs on two spatially separated sample surfaces which are connected by the bulk chiral zero mode, which can contribute to transport. Here we report Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillation and its evolution into quantum Hall effect (QHE) in multilayered type-II Weyl semimetal WTe2. We observe both the three-dimensional (3D) QHE from bulk states by parallelly stacking of confined two-dimensional layers in the low magnetic field region and the 3D QHE in the quantized surface transport due to Weyl orbits in the high magnetic field region. Our study of the two types of novel QHEs controlled by magnetic field and our demonstration of the crossover between quantized bulk and surface transport provide an essential platform for the future quantized transport studies in topological semimetals.

Thickness Dependence of Magneto-transport Properties in Tungsten Ditelluride

We investigate the electronic structure of tungsten ditelluride (WTe$_2$) flakes with different thicknesses in magneto-transport studies. The temperature-dependent resistance and magnetoresistance (MR) measurements both confirm the breaking of carrier balance induced by thickness reduction, which suppresses the `turn-on' behavior and large positive MR. The Shubnikov-de-Haas oscillation studies further confirm the thickness-dependent change of electronic structure of WTe$_2$ and reveal a possible temperature-sensitive electronic structure change. Finally, we report the thickness-dependent anisotropy of Fermi surface, which reveals that multi-layer WTe$_2$ is an electronic 3D material and the anisotropy decreases as thickness decreases.
