Global branches of Stokes waves of variable period on stratified fluids

We consider stratified steady water waves in a two dimensional channel. Our subject is branches of Stokes waves, bifurcating from laminar flows. We assume that the mass flux and the Bernoulli constant are fixed and consider the period of the wave as a parameter, which can change its value along the branch. A new class of density and Bernoulli functions is presented, for which laminar flows generate global bifurcation branches. The laminar flows are not necessary unidirectional and we show that the bifurcation branch can bifurcate from the laminar flow with arbitrary large period.

On the exchange of stability for the subcritical laminar flow

We consider steady water waves in a two-dimensional channel bounded below by a flat, rigid bottom and above by a free surface. Surface tension is neglected, and the flow is rotational with constant vorticity $a$. We analyze an analytic branch of Stokes waves bifurcating from a subcritical laminar flow, with the wave period serving as the bifurcation parameter. Along this branch, the first eigenvalue of the Fréchet derivative remains negative. Our main focus is the second eigenvalue; its sign plays a crucial role in the analysis of subharmonic bifurcations. This small eigenvalue determines the validity of the principle of exchange of stabilities: a positive sign confirms it, while a negative sign indicates its violation. Furthermore, a positive second eigenvalue corresponds to an increasing period along the bifurcation curve near the critical point, whereas a negative sign implies period decrease. We investigate how the sign of the second eigenvalue depends on the Bernoulli constant $R$ (equivalently, the laminar flow depth $d$) and the vorticity $a$. We show that for each $a$ there exists a critical depth $d_0(a)$ such that the second eigenvalue is positive for $d d_0(a)$. In the laminar flow, a stagnation point forms when the depth exceeds a threshold $d_s(a)$. We demonstrate that $d_0(a) < d_s(a)$ for $a > a_0 \approx -1.01803$, whereas $d_0(a) > d_s(a)$ for $a < a_0$. We also verify the property of formal stability by a description of the domain in $(a,d)$ variables, where this property holds. Numerical illustrations of these properties are presented in the paper.

Spectral properties of the Frechet derivatives of stratified steady Stokes waves

We consider stratified steady water waves in a two dimensional channel. Our main subject is spectral properties of the Frechet derivatives of steady water Stokes waves. One of main results is the absence of subharmonic water waves in a neighborhood of a Stokes wave. The main assumption is formulated in terms of the eigenvalues of the Frechet derivative evaluated at this wave and considered in the class of periodic solutions of the same period. The first eigenvalue is always negative. We show that if the second eigenvalue is positive then there are no waves with multiple periods in a neighborhood of the Stokes wave.

On non-uniqueness of solitary waves on two-dimensional rotational flow

We consider solitary water waves on a rotational, unidirectional flow in a two-dimensional channel of finite depth. Ovsyannikov has conjectured in 1983 that the solitary wave is uniquely determined by the Bernoulli constant, mass flux and by the flow force. This conjecture was disproved by Plotnikov in 1992 for the ir-rotational flow. In this paper we show that this conjecture is wrong also for rotational flows. Moreover we prove that in any neighborhood of the first bifurcation point on the branch of solitary waves, approaching the extreme wave, there are infinitely many pairs of solitary waves corresponding to the same Bernoulli constant. We give a description of the structure of this set of pairs. The proof is based on a bifurcation analysis of the global branch of solitary waves which is of independent interest.

On the first bifurcation of Stokes waves

We consider Stokes water waves on the vorticity flow in a two-dimensional channel of finite depth. In the paper "V.Kozlov, On first subharmonic bifurcations in a branch of Stokes waves, JDE, 2024," it was proved existence of subharmonic bifurcations on a branch of Stokes waves. Such bifurcations occur near the first bifurcation in the set of Stokes waves. Moreover it is shown in that paper that the bifurcating solutions build a connected continuum containing large amplitude waves. This fact was proved under a certain assumption concerning the second eigenvalue of the Frechet derivative. In this paper we investigate this assumption and present explicit conditions when it is satisfied.

On the first bifurcation of solitary waves

We consider solitary water waves on the vorticity flow in a two-dimensional channel of finite depth. The main object of study is a branch of solitary waves starting from a laminar flow and then approaching an extreme wave. We prove that there always exists a bifurcation point on such branches. Moreover, the crossing number of the first bifurcation point is 1, i.e. the bifurcation occurs at a simple eigenvalue.

On first subharmonic bifurcations in a branch of Stokes waves

Steady surface waves in a two-dimensional channel are considered. We study bifurcations, which occur on a branch of Stokes water waves starting from a uniform stream solution. Two types of bifurcations are considered: bifurcations in the class of Stokes waves (Stokes bifurcation) and bifurcations in a class of periodic waves with the period M times the period of the Stokes wave (M-subharmonic bifurcation). If we consider the first Stokes bifurcation point then there are no M-subharmonic bifurcations before this point and there exists M-subharmonic bifurcation points after the first Stokes bifurcation for sufficiently large M, which approach the Stokes bifurcation point when M tends to infinity. Moreover the set of M- subharmonic bifurcating solutions is a closed connected continuum. We give also a more detailed description of this connected set in terms of the set of its limit points, which must contain extreme waves, or overhanging waves, or solitary waves or waves with stagnation on the bottom, or Stokes bifurcation points different from the initial one.

The subharmonic bifurcation of Stokes waves on vorticity flow

We consider a family of Stokes waves on vorticity flow parameterized by a parameter. For large value of the parameter the Stokes waves approach the Stokes extreme wave. We prove that there are infinitely many subharmonic bifurcation points on such branches.

On loops in water wave branches and monotonicity of water waves

We give a quite simple approach how to prove the absence of loops in bifurcation branches of water waves in rotational case with arbitrary vorticity distribution. The supporting flow may contain stagnation points and critical layers and water surface is allowed to be overhanging. Monotonicity properties of the free surface are presented. Especially simple criterium of absence of loops is given for bifurcation branches when the bifurcation parameter is the water wave period. We show that there are no loops if you start from a water wave with a positive/negative vertical component of velocity on the positive half period.

Robin-Dirichlet alternating iterative procedure for solving the Cauchy problem for Helmholtz equation in an unbounded domain

We consider the Cauchy problem for the Helmholtz equation with a domain in R^d, d>2 with N cylindrical outlets to infinity with bounded inclusions in R^{d-1}. Cauchy data are prescribed on the boundary of the bounded domains and the aim is to find solution on the unbounded part of the boundary. In 1989, Kozlov and Maz'ya proposed an alternating iterative method for solving Cauchy problems associated with elliptic,self-adjoint and positive-definite operators in bounded domains. Different variants of this method for solving Cauchy problems associated with Helmholtz-type operators exists. We consider the variant proposed by Mpinganzima et al. for bounded domains and derive the necessary conditions for the convergence of the procedure in unbounded domains. For the numerical implementation, a finite difference method is used to solve the problem in a simple rectangular domain in R^2 that represent a truncated infinite strip. The numerical results shows that by appropriate truncation of the domain and with appropriate choice of the Robin parameters, the Robin-Dirichlet alternating iterative procedure is convergent.

An asymptotic behaviour near the crest of waves of extreme form on water of finite depth

We prove local higher-order asymptotics for extreme water waves with vorticity near stagnation points. We obtain that the behaviour of solutions and their regularity depend substantially on the vorticity. In particular, we show that extreme waves with a negative vorticity distribution have concave profiles near the crest. Our approach is based on new regularity results and asymptotic analysis of the corresponding nonlinear problem in a half-strip. Our main result is local and therefore is valid for a broad range of problems, such as for waves with a piecewise constant vorticity, stratified waves, flows with counter-currents or waves on infinite depth.

Global bifurcation and highest waves on water of finite depth

We consider the two-dimensional problem for steady water waves with vorticity on water of finite depth. While neglecting the effects of surface tension we construct connected families of large amplitude periodic waves approaching the limiting wave, which is either a solitary wave, the highest solitary wave, the highest Stokes wave or a Stokes wave with a breaking profile. In particular, when the vorticity is nonnegative we prove the existence of highest Stokes waves with an included angle of 120 degrees. In contrast to previous studies we fix the Bernoulli constant and consider the wavelength as a bifurcation parameter, which guarantees that the limiting wave has a finite depth. In fact, this is the first rigorous proof of the existence of extreme Stokes waves with vorticity on water of finite depth. Beside the existence of highest waves we provide a new result about the regularity of Stokes waves of arbitrary amplitude (including extreme waves). Furthermore, we prove several new facts about steady waves, such as a lower bound for the wavelength of Stokes waves, while also eliminate a possibility of the wave breaking for waves with non-negative vorticity.

Nonexistence of subcritical solitary waves

We prove the nonexistence of two-dimensional solitary gravity water waves with subcritical wave speeds and an arbitrary distribution of vorticity. This is a longstanding open problem, and even in the irrotational case there are only partial results relying on sign conditions or smallness assumptions. As a corollary, we obtain a relatively complete classification of solitary waves: they must be supercritical, symmetric, and monotonically decreasing on either side of a central crest. The proof introduces a new function which is related to the so-called flow force and has several surprising properties. In addition to solitary waves, our nonexistence result applies to "half-solitary" waves (e.g. bores) which decay in only one direction.

Solitary waves on rotational flows with an interior stagnation point

The two-dimensional free-boundary problem describing steady gravity waves with vorticity on water of finite depth is considered. Under the assumption that the vorticity is a negative constant whose absolute value is sufficiently large, we construct a solution with the following properties. The corresponding flow is unidirectional at infinity and has a solitary wave of elevation as its upper boundary; under this unidirectional flow, there is a bounded domain adjacent to the bottom, which surrounds an interior stagnation point and is divided into two subdomains with opposite directions of flow by a critical level curve connecting two stagnation points on the bottom.

Floquet Problem and Center Manifold Reduction for Ordinary Differential Operators with Periodic Coefficients in Hilbert Spaces

A first order differential equation with a periodic operator coefficient acting in a pair of Hilbert spaces is considered. This setting models both elliptic equations with periodic coefficients in a cylinder and parabolic equations with time periodic coefficients. Our main results are a construction of a pointwise projector and a spectral splitting of the system into a finite dimensional system of ordinary differential equations with constant coefficients and an infinite dimensional part whose solutions have better properties in a certain sense. This complements the well-known asymptotic results for periodic hypoelliptic problems in cylinders (Kuchment) and for elliptic problems in quasicylinders (Nazarov). As an application we give a center manifold reduction for a class of non-linear ordinary differential equations in Hilbert spaces with periodic coefficients. This result generalizes the known case with constant coefficients (Mielke).

Mathematical analysis of complex SIR model with coinfection and density dependence

An SIR model with the coinfection of the two infectious agents in a single host population is considered. The model includes the environmental carry capacity in each class of population. A special case of this model is analyzed and several threshold conditions are obtained which describes the establishment of disease in the population. We prove that for small carrying capacity $K$ there exist a globally stable disease free equilibrium point. Furthermore, we establish the continuity of the transition dynamics of the stable equilibrium point, i.e. we prove that (1) for small values of $K$ there exists a unique globally stable equilibrium point, and (b) it moves continuously as $K$ is growing (while its face type may change). This indicate that carrying capacity is the crucial parameter and increase in resources in terms of carrying capacity promotes the risk of infection.

Small-amplitude steady water waves with critical layers: non-symmetric waves

The problem for two-dimensional steady water waves with vorticity is considered. Using methods of spatial dynamics, we reduce the problem to a finite dimensional Hamiltonian system. As an application, we prove the existence of non-symmetric steady water waves when the number of roots of the dispersion equation is greater than 1.
