N-modal steady water waves with vorticity

The problem for two-dimensional steady gravity driven water waves with vorticity is investigated. Using a multidimensional bifurcation argument, we prove the existence of small-amplitude periodic steady waves with an arbitrary number of crests per period. The role of bifurcation parameters is played by the roots of the dispersion equation.

Density-dependent feedback in age-structured populations

The population size has far-reaching effects on the fitness of the population, that, in its turn influences the population extinction or persistence. Understanding the density- and age-dependent factors will facilitate more accurate predictions about the population dynamics and its asymptotic behaviour. In this paper, we develop a rigourous mathematical analysis to study positive and negative effects of increased population density in the classical nonlinear age-structured population model introduced by Gurtin \& MacCamy in the late 1970s. One of our main results expresses the global stability of the system in terms of the newborn function only. We also derive the existence of a threshold population size implying the population extinction, which is well-known in population dynamics as an Allee effect.

A comparison theorem for nonsmooth nonlinear operators

We prove a comparison theorem for super- and sub-solutions with non-vanishing gradients to semilinear PDEs provided a nonlinearity $f$ is $L^p$ function with $p > 1$. The proof is based on a strong maximum principle for solutions of divergence type elliptic equations with VMO leading coefficients and with lower order coefficients from a Kato class. An application to estimation of periodic water waves profiles is given.

Modified Reynolds equation for steady flow through a curved pipe

A modified Reynolds equation governing the steady flow of a fluid with low Reynolds number through a curvilinear, narrow tube, with its derivation from Stokes equations through asymptotic methods is presented. The channel considered may have large curvature and torsion. Approximations of the velocity and the pressure of the fluid inside the channel are constructed by artificially imposing appropriate boundary conditions at the inlet and the outlet. A justification for the approximations is provided along with a comparison with a simpler case.

Hadamard Asymptotics for Eigenvalues of the Dirichlet Laplacian

This paper is dedicated to the classical Hadamard formula for asymptotics of eigenvalues of the Dirichlet-Laplacian under perturbations of the boundary. We prove that the Hadamard formula still holds for $C^1$-domains with $C^1$-perturbations. We also derive an optimal estimate for the remainder term in the $C^{1,α}$-case. Furthermore, if the boundary is merely Lipschitz, we show that the Hadamard formula is not valid.

Dynamical behaviour of SIR model with coinfection: the case of finite carrying capacity

Multiple viruses are widely studied because of their negative effect on the health of host as well as on whole population. The dynamics of coinfection is important in this case. We formulated a SIR model that describes the coinfection of the two viral strains in a single host population with an addition of limited growth of susceptible in terms of carrying capacity. The model describes four classes of a population: susceptible, infected by first virus, infected by second virus, infected by both viruses and completely immune class. We proved that for any set of parameter values there exist a globally stable equilibrium point. This guarantees that the disease always persists in the population with a deeper connection between the intensity of infection and carrying capacity of population. Increase in resources in terms of carrying capacity promotes the risk of infection which may lead to destabilization of the population.

Biodiversity and robustness of large ecosystems

We study the biodiversity problem for resource competition systems with extinctions and self-limitation effects. Our main result establishes estimates of biodiversity in terms of the fundamental parameters of the model. We also prove the global stability of solutions for systems with extinctions and large turnover rate. We show that when the extinction threshold is distinct from zero, the large time dynamics of system is fundamentally non-predictable. In the last part of the paper we obtain explicit analytical estimates of ecosystem robustness with respect to variations of resource supply which support the $R^*$ rule for a system with random parameters.

Global stability and persistence of complex foodwebs

We develop a novel approach to study the global behaviour of large foodwebs for ecosystems where several species share multiple resources. The model extends and generalize some previous works and takes into account self-limitation. Under certain conditions, we establish the global convergence and persistence of solutions.

A comparison theorem for super- and subsolutions of $\mathbf{\nabla^2 u + f (u) = 0}$ and its application to water waves with vorticity

A comparison theorem is proved for a pair of solutions that satisfy in a weak sense opposite differential inequalities with nonlinearity of the form $f (u)$ with $f$ belonging to the class $L^p_{loc}$. The solutions are assumed to have non-vanishing gradients in the domain, where the inequalities are considered. The comparison theorem is applied to the problem describing steady, periodic water waves with vorticity in the case of arbitrary free-surface profiles including overhanging ones. Bounds for these profiles as well as streamfunctions and admissible values of the total head are obtained.

A two dimensional model of curvilinear blood vessels with layered elastic walls

We present a two dimensional model describing the elastic behaviour of the wall of a curved blood vessel. The wall has a laminate structure consisting of several anisotropic layers of varying thickness and is assumed to be much smaller in thickness than the radius of the vessel which itself is allowed to vary. Our two-dimensional model takes the interaction of the wall with the surrounding tissue and the blood flow into account and is obtained via a dimension reduction procedure. The curvature and twist of the vessel axis as well as the anisotropy of the laminate wall present the main challenges in applying the dimension reduction procedure so plenty of examples of canonical shapes of vessels and their walls are supplied with explicit systems of differential equations at the end.

A fractal graph model of capillary type systems

We consider blood flow in a vessel with an attached capillary system. The latter is modeled with the help of a corresponding fractal graph whose edges are supplied with ordinary differential equations obtained by the dimension-reduction procedure from a three-dimensional model of blood flow in thin vessels. The Kirchhoff transmission conditions must be satisfied at each interior vertex. The geometry and physical parameters of this system are described by a finite number of scaling factors which allow the system to have self-reproducing solutions. Namely, these solutions are determined by the factors' values on a certain fragment of the fractal graph and are extended to its rest part by virtue of these scaling factors. The main result is the existence and uniqueness of self-reproducing solutions, whose dependence on the scaling factors of the fractal graph is also studied. As a corollary we obtain a relation between the pressure and flux at the junction, where the capillary system is attached to the blood vessel. This relation leads to the Robin boundary condition at the junction and this condition allows us to solve the problem for the flow in the blood vessel without solving it for the attached capillary system.

Permanency of the age-structured population model on several temporally variable patches

We consider a system of nonlinear partial differential equations that describes an age-structured population inhabiting several temporally varying patches. We prove existence and uniqueness of solution and analyze its large-time behavior in cases when the environment is constant and when it changes periodically. A pivotal assumption is that individuals can disperse and that each patch can be reached from every other patch, directly or through several intermediary patches. We introduce the net reproductive operator and characteristic equations for time-independent and periodical models and prove that permanency is defined by the net reproductive rate for the whole system. If the net reproductive rate is less or equal to one, extinction on all patches is imminent. Otherwise, permanency on all patches is guaranteed. The proof is based on a new approach to analysis of large-time stability.

Bounds for solutions to the problem of steady water waves with vorticity

The two-dimensional free-boundary problem describing steady gravity waves with vorticity on water of finite depth is considered. Bounds for stream functions as well as free-surface profiles and the total head are obtained under the assumption that the vorticity distribution is a locally Lipschitz function. It is also shown that wave flows have counter-currents in the case when the infimum of the free surface profile exceeds a certain critical value.

Persistence analysis of the age-structured population model on several patches

We consider a system of nonlinear partial differential equations that describes an age-structured population living in changing environment on $N$ patches. We prove existence and uniqueness of solution and analyze large time behavior of the system in time-independent case, for periodically changing and for irregularly varying environment. Under the assumption that every patch can be reached from every other patch, directly or through several intermediary patches, and that net reproductive operator has spectral radius larger than one, we prove that population is persistent on all patches. If the spectral radius is less or equal one, extinction on all patches is imminent.

On the Benjamin--Lighthill conjecture for water waves with vorticity

We consider the nonlinear problem of steady gravity-driven waves on the free surface of a two-dimensional flow of an incompressible fluid (say, water). The flow is assumed to be unidirectional of finite depth and the water motion is supposed to be rotational. Our aim is to verify the Benjamin--Lighthill conjecture for flows whose total head (Bernoulli's constant) is close to the critical one; the latter is determined by the vorticity distribution so that no horizontal shear flows exist for smaller values of the total head.
