Chains in CR geometry as geodesics of a Kropina metric

With the help of a generalization of the Fermat principle in general relativity, we show that chains in CR geometry are geodesics of a certain Kropina metric constructed from the CR structure. We study the projective equivalence of Kropina metrics and show that if the kernel distributions of the corresponding 1-forms are non-integrable then two projectively equivalent metrics are trivially projectively equivalent. As an application, we show that sufficiently many chains determine the CR structure up to conjugacy, generalizing and reproving the main result of [J.-H. Cheng, 1988]. The correspondence between geodesics of the Kropina metric and chains allows us to use the methods of metric geometry and the calculus of variations to study chains. We use these methods to re-prove the result of [H. Jacobowitz, 1985] that locally any two points of a strictly pseudoconvex CR manifolds can be joined by a chain. Finally, we generalize this result to the global setting by showing that any two points of a connected compact strictly pseudoconvex CR manifold which admits a pseudo-Einstein contact form with positive Tanaka-Webster scalar curvature can be joined by a chain.

On the groups of c-projective transformations of complete Kähler manifolds

We show that for any complete connected Kähler manifold the index of the group of complex affine transformations in the group of c-projective transformations is at most two unless the Kähler manifold is isometric to complex projective space equipped with a positive constant multiple of the Fubini-Study metric. This establishes a stronger version of the recently proved Yano-Obata conjecture for complete Kähler manifolds.

On the Lichnerowicz conjecture for CR manifolds with mixed signature

We construct examples of nondegenerate CR manifolds with Levi form of signature $(p,q)$, $2\leq p\leq q$, which are compact, not locally CR flat, and admit essential CR vector fields. We also construct an example of a noncompact nondegenerate CR manifold with signature $(1,n-1)$ which is not locally CR flat and admits an essential CR vector fields. These provide counterexamples to the analogue of the Lichnerowicz conjecture for CR manifolds with mixed signature.

Projectively invariant objects and the index of the group of affine transformations in the group of projective transformations

The paper is grown from the lecture course "Metric projective geometry" which I hold at the summer school "Finsler geometry with applications" at Karlovassi, Samos, in 2014, and at the workshop before the 8th seminar on Geometry and Topology of the Iranian Mathematical society at the Amirkabir University of Technology in 2015. The goal of this lecture course was to show how effective projectively invariant objects can be used to solve natural and named problems in differential geometry, and this paper also does it: I give easy new proofs to many known statements, and also prove the following new statement: on a complete Riemannian manifold of nonconstant curvature the index of the group of affine transformations in the group of projective transformations is at most two.

Zermelo deformation of Finsler metrics by Killing vector fields

We show how geodesics, Jacobi vector fields and flag curvature of a Finsler metric behave under Zermelo deformation with respect to a Killing vector field. We also show that Zermelo deformation with respect to a Killing vector field of a locally symmetric Finsler metric is also locally symmetric.

Monochromatic metrics are generalized Berwald

We show that monochromatic Finsler metrics, i.e., Finsler metrics such that each two tangent spaces are isomorphic as normed spaces, are generalized Berwald metrics, i.e., there exists an affine connection, possibly with torsion, that preserves the Finsler function

Locally 2-fold symmetric manifolds are locally symmetric

A manifold is locally \emph{$k$-fold symmetric}, if for any point and any $k$-dimensional vector subspace tangent to this point there exists a local isometry such that this point is a fixed point and the differential of the isometry restricted to that $k$-dimensional vector subspace is minus the identity. We show that for $k \ge 2$, Riemannian, pseudoriemannian and Finslerian locally $k$-fold symmetric manifolds are locally symmetric.

C-projective geometry

We develop in detail the theory of c-projective geometry, a natural analogue of projective differential geometry adapted to complex manifolds. We realise it as a type of parabolic geometry and describe the associated Cartan or tractor connection. A Kaehler manifold gives rise to a c-projective structure and this is one of the primary motivations for its study. The existence of two or more Kaehler metrics underlying a given c-projective structure has many ramifications, which we explore in depth. As a consequence of this analysis, we prove the Yano-Obata conjecture for complete Kaehler manifolds: if such a manifold admits a one parameter group of c-projective transformations that are not affine, then it is complex projective space, equipped with a multiple of the Fubini-Study metric.

The Myers-Steenrod theorem for Finsler manifolds of low regularity

We prove a version of Myers-Steenrod's theorem for Finsler manifolds under minimal regularity hypothesis. In particular we show that an isometry between $C^{k,α}$-smooth (or partially smooth) Finsler metrics, with $k+α>0$, $k\in \mathbb{N} \cup \{0\}$, and $0 \leq α\leq 1$ is necessary a diffeomorphism of class $C^{k+1,α}$. A generalisation of this result to the case of Finsler 1-quasiconformal mapping is given. The proofs are based on the reduction of the Finlserian problems to Riemannian ones with the help of the the Binet-Legendre metric.

Curvature and the c-projective mobility of Kaehler metrics with hamiltonian 2-forms

The mobility of a Kaehler metric is the dimension of the space of metrics with which it is c-projectively equivalent. The mobility is at least two if and only if the Kaehler metric admits a nontrivial hamiltonian 2-form. After summarizing this relationship, we present necessary conditions for a Kaehler metric to have mobility at least three: its curvature must have nontrivial nullity at every point. Using the local classification of Kaehler metrics with hamiltonian 2-forms, we describe explicitly the Kaehler metrics with mobility at least three and hence show that the nullity condition on the curvature is also sufficient, up to some degenerate exceptions. In an Appendix, we explain how the classification may be related, generically, to the holonomy of a complex cone metric.

Local normal forms for c-projectively equivalent metrics and proof of the Yano-Obata conjecture in arbitrary signature. Proof of the projective Lichnerowicz conjecture for Lorentzian metrics

Two Kähler metrics on a complex manifold are called c-projectively equivalent if their $J$-planar curves coincide. These curves are defined by the property that the acceleration is complex proportional to the velocity. We give an explicit local description of all pairs of c-projectively equivalent Kähler metrics of arbitrary signature and use this description to prove the classical Yano-Obata conjecture: we show that on a closed connected Kähler manifold of arbitrary signature, any c-projective vector field is an affine vector field unless the manifold is $CP^n$ with (a multiple of) the Fubini-Study metric. As a by-product, we prove the projective Lichnerowicz conjecture for metrics of Lorentzian signature: we show that on a closed connected Lorentzian manifold, any projective vector field is an affine vector field.

Projectively related metrics, Weyl nullity, and metric projectively invariant equations

A metric projective structure is a manifold equipped with the unparametrised geodesics of some pseudo-Riemannian metric. We make acomprehensive treatment of such structures in the case that there is a projective Weyl curvature nullity condition. The analysis is simplified by a fundamental and canonical 2-tensor invariant that we discover. It leads to a new canonical tractor connection for these geometries which is defined on a rank $(n+1)$-bundle. We show this connection is linked to the metrisability equations that govern the existence of metrics compatible with the structure. The fundamental 2-tensor also leads to a new class of invariant linear differential operators that are canonically associated to these geometries; included is a third equation studied by Gallot et al. We apply the results to study the metrisability equation, in the nullity setting described. We obtain strong local and global results on the nature of solutions and also on the nature of the geometries admitting such solutions, obtaining classification results in some cases. We show that closed Sasakian and Kähler manifold do not admit nontrivial solutions. We also prove that, on a closed manifold, two nontrivially projectively equivalent metrics cannot have the same tracefree Ricci tensor. We show that on a closed manifold a metric having a nontrivial solution of the metrisablity equation cannot have two-dimensional nullity space at every point. In these statements the meaning of trivial solution is dependent on the context. There is a function $B$ naturally appearing if a metric projective structure has nullity. We analyse in detail the case when this is not a constant, and describe all nontrivially projectively equivalent Riemannian metrics on closed manifolds with nonconstant $B$.

Locally conformally Berwald manifolds and compact quotients of reducible manifolds by homotheties

We study locally conformally Berwald metrics on closed manifolds which are not globally conformally Berwald. We prove that the characterization of such metrics is equivalent to characterizing incomplete, simply-connected, Riemannian manifolds with reducible holonomy group whose quotient by a group of homotheties is closed. We further prove a de Rham type splitting theorem which states that if such a manifold is analytic, it is isometric to the Riemannian product of a Euclidean space and an incomplete manifold.

The degree of mobility of Einstein metrics

Two pseudo-Riemannian metrics are called projectively equivalent if their unparametrized geodesics coincide. The degree of mobility of a metric is the dimension of the space of metrics that are projectively equivalent to it. We give a complete list of possible values for the degree of mobility of Riemannian and Lorentzian Einstein metrics on simply connected manifolds, and describe all possible dimensions of the space of essential projective vector fields.
