Migration of Belle II TOP Feature Extraction from the Zynq Processing System to PCIe40 Readout PCs

The Belle II Time-of-Propagation (TOP) detector is a key system for charged-particle identification (PID). Although TOP operated successfully during initial Belle II data taking, increasing luminosity and beam-induced background led to more frequent single-event upsets (SEUs) in the radiation-exposed Zynq systems-on-chip (SoCs). Resulting lockups of the embedded processing systems (PSs) interrupted data acquisition. To mitigate this limitation, waveform feature extraction, a critical task of the on-detector Zynq PS, was migrated to the off-detector PCIe40 readout PCs (ROPCs). The new architecture bypasses the PS in the event data path and performs feature extraction outside the detector radiation environment. This change removed SEU-induced PS lockups from the event data path and enabled stable operation of the TOP front-end electronics and the Belle II data-acquisition system under increased luminosity and background conditions. The typical TOP deadtime decreased from about 1% to a level consistent with zero after the final firmware patch, and stable operation was demonstrated at a Level-1 (L1) trigger rate of 30 kHz with a microchannel-plate photomultiplier-tube (MCP-PMT) hit rate of approximately 5 MHz per PMT. This paper describes the migrated architecture, its deployment and validation, and its operational and PID performance.

The Imaging Time-of-Propagation Detector at Belle II

We report on the construction, operation, and performance of the Time-of-Propagation detector with imaging used for the Belle II experiment running at the Super-KEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. This detector is located in the central barrel region and uses Cherenkov light to provide particle identification among hadrons. The Cherenkov light is radiated in highly polished bars of synthetic fused silica (quartz) and transported to the ends of the bars via total internal reflection. One bar end is instrumented with finely segmented micro-channel-plate photomultiplier tubes to record the light, while the other end has a mirror attached to reflect the photons back to the instrumented end. Both the propagation times and hit positions of the Cherenkov photons are measured; these depend on the Cherenkov angle and together provide good discrimination among charged pions, kaons, and protons with momenta up to around 4 GeV/$c$. To date, the detector has been used to record and analyze almost 600 fb$^{-1}$ of Belle II data.

Front-end electronic readout system for the Belle II imaging Time-Of-Propagation detector

The Time-Of-Propagation detector is a Cherenkov particle identification detector based on quartz radiator bars for the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider. The purpose of the detector is to identify the type of charged hadrons produced in electron-positron collisions, and requires a single photon timing resolution below 100 picoseconds. A novel front-end electronic system was designed, built, and integrated to acquire data from the 8192 microchannel plate photomultiplier tube channels in the detector. Waveform sampling of these analog signals is done by switched-capacitor array application-specific integrated circuits. The processes of triggering, digitization of windows of interest, readout, and data transfer to the Belle II data acquisition system are managed by Xilinx Zynq-7000 programmable system on a chip devices.

Preliminary Results on gamma gamma -> Ks K pi from CLEO

We analyzed 13.8 fb^{-1} of the integrated e+e- luminosity collected at 10.6 GeV center-of-mass energy with the CLEO II and II.V detectors to study exclusive two-photon production of single hadronic resonances. We searched for hadrons decaying into Ks K pi when both leptons remain undetected. In this analysis we studied the detection efficiency and evaluated systematic errors using independent data samples. We estimated 90% CL upper limits on the products of the two-photon partial widths of (pseudo)scalar hadrons with masses below 1.7 GeV/c2 and their branching fractions into Ks K pi. Our preliminary results are marginally consistent with the first observation of eta(1440) in two-photon collisions by the L3 experiment.

Search for CP Violation and New Physics at CLEO

Recent CLEO results on the search for CP violation in decays of B and D mesons and tau lepton are reviewed. New data on ``wrong-sign'' D decays and B to K(*)l+l-$ FCNC transitions are presented. As possible Standard Model contribution to many of studied processes is tiny, described efforts constitute the search for physics beyond the Standard Model. Future CLEO-c efforts on the subject are also outlined.

QCD Studies in Two-Photon Collisions at CLEO

We review QCD results of CLEO two-photon analyses and discuss the measurements of two-photon partial widths of charmonium and cross sections for hadron pairs production, antisearch for glueballs and the measurements of $γ^*γ\to$ pseudoscalar meson transition form factors. We emphasize the importance of other possible analyses, favorable trigger conditions and selection criteria of the presently running experiment and the advantages of CLEOc - the future $τ$-charm factory at Cornell with the existing CLEO III detector.

Measurements of the Two-Photon Widths of the Charmonium States ${η_c}$, $χ_{c{\large{0}}}$ and $χ_{c{\large{2}}}$

Using the CLEO-II detector at the CESR $e^+e^-$ storage ring running at the center-of-mass energy around 10.6 GeV, we have studied exclusive production of charmonium states in two-photon collisions. Employing a dataset comprising 3.0 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$ we have searched for decays of the $η_c$, $χ_{c0}$ and $χ_{c2}$ mesons resulting in four charged hadrons. We report on the measurements of the cross sections and two-photon widths of these charmonium states.
