Magnetization process of atacamite: a case of weakly coupled $S = 1/2$ sawtooth chains

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the mineral atacamite Cu$_2$Cl(OH)$_3$. Density functional theory yields a Hamiltonian describing anisotropic sawtooth chains with weak 3D connections. Experimentally, we fully characterize the antiferromagnetically ordered state. Magnetic order shows a complex evolution with the magnetic field, while, starting at 31.5 T, we observe a plateau-like magnetization at about $M_{\rm sat}/2$. Based on complementary theoretical approaches, we show that the latter is unrelated to the known magnetization plateau of a sawtooth chain. Instead, we provide evidence that the magnetization process in atacamite is a field-driven canting of a 3D network of weakly coupled sawtooth chains that form giant moments.

Optical phonons coupled to a Kitaev spin liquid

Emergent excitation continua in frustrated magnets are a fingerprint of fractionalization, characteristic of quantum spin-liquid states. Recent evidence from Raman scattering for a coupling between such continua and lattice degrees of freedom in putative Kitaev magnets [1-6] may provide insight into the nature of the fractionalized quasiparticles. Here we study the renormalization of optical phonons coupled to the underlying $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ quantum spin-liquid. We show that phonon line-shapes acquire an asymmetry, observable in light scattering, and originating from two distinct sources, namely the dispersion of the Majorana continuum and the Fano effect. Moreover, we find that the phonon life-times increase with increasing temperature due to thermal blocking of available phase space. Finally, in contrast to low-energy probes, optical phonon renormalization is rather insensitive to thermally excited gauge fluxes and barely susceptible to external magnetic fields.

Zero-frequency transport properties of one dimensional spin-1/2 systems

We report a detailed analysis of the Drude weights for both thermal and spin transport in one dimensional spin-1/2 systems by means of exact diagonalization and analytic approaches at finite temperatures. Transport properties are studied first for the integrable XXZ model and second for various non-integrable systems such as the dimerized chain, the frustrated chain, and the spin ladder. We compare our results obtained by exact diagonalization and mean-field theory with the Bethe ansatz, bosonization and other numerical studies in the case of the anisotropic Heisenberg model both in the gapless and gapped regime. In particular, we find indications that the Drude weight for spin transport is finite in the thermodynamic limit for the isotropic chain. For the non-integrable models, a finite-size analysis of the numerical data for the Drude weights is presented covering the entire parameter space of the dimerized and frustrated chain. We also discuss which conclusions can be drawn from bosonization regarding the question whether the Drude weights are finite or not. One of our main results is that the Drude weights vanish in the thermodynamic limit for non-integrable models.

Quantum phases of a frustrated four-leg spin tube

We study the ground state phase diagram of a frustrated spin-1/2 four-leg tube. Using a variety of complementary techniques, namely density matrix renormalization group, exact diagonalization, Schwinger boson mean field theory, quantum Monte-Carlo and series expansion, we explore the parameter space of this model in the regime of all-antiferromagnetic exchange. In contrast to unfrustrated four-leg tubes we uncover a rich phase diagram. Apart from the Luttinger liquid fixed point in the limit of decoupled legs, this comprises several gapped ground states, namely a plaquette, an incommensurate, and an antiferromagnetic quasi spin-2 chain phase. The transitions between these phases are analyzed in terms of total energy and static structure factor calculations and are found to be of (weak) first order. Despite the absence of long range order in the quantum case, remarkable similarities to the classical phase diagram are uncovered, with the exception of the icommensurate regime, which is strongly renormalized by quantum fluctuations. In the limit of large leg exchange the tube exhibits a deconfinement cross-over from gapped magnon like excitations to spinons.

Coherent spin-current oscillations in transverse magnetic fields

We address the coherence of the dynamics of spin-currents with components transverse to an external magnetic field for the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain. We study current autocorrelations at finite temperatures and the real-time dynamics of currents at zero temperature. Besides a coherent Larmor oscillation, we find an additional collective oscillation at higher frequencies, emerging as a coherent many-magnon effect at low temperatures. Using numerical and analytical methods, we analyze the oscillation frequency and decay time of this coherent current-mode versus temperature and magnetic field.

Field-dependent spin and heat conductivities of dimerized spin-1/2 chains

We study the spin and heat conductivity of dimerized spin-1/2 chains in homogeneous magnetic fields at finite temperatures. At zero temperature, the model undergoes two field-induced quantum phase transitions from a dimerized, into a Luttinger, and finally into a fully polarized phase. We search for signatures of these transitions in the spin and heat conductivities. Using exact diagonalization, we calculate the Drude weights, the frequency dependence of the conductivities, and the corresponding integrated spectral weights. As a main result, we demonstrate that both the spin and heat conductivity are enhanced in the gapless phase and most notably at low frequencies. In the case of the thermal conductivity, however, the field-induced increase seen in the bare transport coefficients is suppressed by magnetothermal effects, caused by the coupling of the heat and spin current in finite magnetic fields. Our results complement recent magnetic transport experiments on spin ladder materials with sufficiently small exchange couplings allowing access to the field-induced transitions.

Low frequency spin dynamics in the quantum magnet copper pyrazine dinitrate

The S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain exhibits a magnetic field driven quantum critical point. We study the low frequency spin dynamics in copper pyrazine dinitrate (CuPzN), a realization of this model system of quantum magnetism, by means of $^{13}$C-NMR spectroscopy. Measurements of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ in the vicinity of the saturation field are compared with quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the dynamic structure factor. Both show a strong divergence of low energy excitations at temperatures in the quantum regime. The analysis of the anisotropic $T_1^{-1}$-rates and frequency shifts allows one to disentangle the contributions from transverse and longitudinal spin fluctuations for a selective study and to determine the transfer of delocalized spin moments from copper to the neighboring nitrogen atoms.

Quantum critical dynamics of a S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain studied by 13C-NMR spectroscopy

We present a 13C-NMR study of the magnetic field driven transition to complete polarization of the S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain system copper pyrazine dinitrate Cu(C_4H_4N_2)(NO_3)_2 (CuPzN). The static local magnetization as well as the low-frequency spin dynamics, probed via the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1, were explored from the low to the high field limit and at temperatures from the quantum regime (k_B T << J) up to the classical regime (k_B T >> J). The experimental data show very good agreement with quantum Monte Carlo calculations over the complete range of parameters investigated. Close to the critical field, as derived from static experiments, a pronounced maximum in 1/T_1 is found which we interpret as the finite-temperature manifestation of a diverging density of zero-energy magnetic excitations at the field-driven quantum critical point.

Spin-Dynamics of the antiferromagnetic S=1/2-Chain at finite magnetic Fields and intermediate Temperatures

We present a study of the dynamic structure factor of the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain at finite temperatures and finite magnetic fields. Using Quantum-Monte-Carlo based on the stochastic series expansion and Maximum-Entropy methods we evaluate the longitudinal and the transverse dynamic structure factor from vanishing magnetic fields up to and above the threshold $B_c$ for ferromagnetic saturation, as well as for high and for intermediate temperatures. We study the field-induced redistribution of spectral weight contrasting longitudinal versus transverse excitations. At finite fields below saturation incommensurate low-energy modes are found consistent with zero temperature Bethe-Ansatz. The crossover between the field induced ferromagnet above $B_c$ and the Luttinger liquid below $B_c$ is analyzed in terms of the transverse spin-dynamics. Evaluating sum-rules we assess the quality of the analytic continuation and demonstrate excellent consistency of the Maximum-Entropy results.

Transport in quasi one-dimensional spin-1/2 systems

We present numerical results for the spin and thermal conductivity of one-dimensional (1D) quantum spin systems. We contrast the properties of integrable models such as the spin-1/2 XXZ chain against nonintegrable ones such as frustrated and dimerized chains. The thermal conductivity of the XXZ chain is ballistic at finite temperatures, while in the nonintegrable models, this quantity is argued to vanish. For the case of frustrated and dimerized chains, we discuss the frequency dependence of the transport coefficients. Finally, we give an overview over related theoretical work on intrinsic and extrinsic scattering mechanisms of quasi-1D spin systems.

Itinerant in-plane magnetic fluctuations and many-body correlations in Na$_x$CoO$_2$

Based on the {\it ab-initio} band structure for Na$_x$CoO$_2$ we derive the single-electron energies and the effective tight-binding description for the $t_{2g}$ bands using projection procedure. Due to the presence of the next-nearest-neighbor hoppings a local minimum in the electronic dispersion close to the $Γ$ point of the first Brillouin zone forms. Correspondingly, in addition to a large Fermi surface an electron pocket close to the $Γ$ point emerges at high doping concentrations. The latter yields the new scattering channel resulting in a peak structure of the itinerant magnetic susceptibility at small momenta. This indicates dominant itinerant in-plane ferromagnetic fluctuations above certain critical concentration $x_m$, in agreement with neutron scattering data. Below $x_m$ the magnetic susceptibility shows a tendency towards the antiferromagnetic fluctuations. We further analyze the many-body effects on the electronic and magnetic excitations using various approximations applicable for different $U/t$ ratio.

Magnetic heat conductivity in $\rm\bf CaCu_2O_3$: linear temperature dependence

We present experimental results for the thermal conductivity $κ$ of the pseudo 2-leg ladder material $\rm CaCu_2O_3$. The strong buckling of the ladder rungs renders this material a good approximation to a $S=1/2$ Heisenberg-chain. Despite a strong suppression of the thermal conductivity of this material in all crystal directions due to inherent disorder, we find a dominant magnetic contribution $κ_\mathrm{mag}$ along the chain direction. $κ_\mathrm{mag}$ is \textit{linear} in temperature, resembling the low-temperature limit of the thermal Drude weight $D_\mathrm{th}$ of the $S=1/2$ Heisenberg chain. The comparison of $κ_\mathrm{mag}$ and $D_\mathrm{th}$ yields a magnetic mean free path of $l_\mathrm{mag}\approx 22 \pm 5$ Å, in good agreement with magnetic measurements.

Jordan-Wigner approach to the frustrated spin one-half XXZ chain

The Jordan-Wigner transformation is applied to study the ground state properties and dimerization transition in the $J_1-J_2$ $XXZ$ chain. We consider different solutions of the mean-field approximation for the transformed Hamiltonian. Ground state energy and the static structure factor are compared with complementary exact diagonalization and good agreement is found near the limit of the Majumdar-Ghosh model. Furthermore, the ground state phase diagram is discussed within the mean-field theory. In particular, we show that an incommensurate ground state is absent for large $J_2$ in a fully self-consistent mean-field analysis.

Antiferromagnetic Dimers of Ni(II) in the S=1 Spin-Ladder Na_2Ni_2(C_2O_4)_3(H_2O)_2

We report the synthesis, crystal structure and magnetic properties of the S=1 2-leg spin-ladder compound Na_2Ni_2(C_2O_4)_3(H_2O)_2. The magnetic properties were examined by magnetic susceptibility and pulsed high field magnetization measurements. The magnetic excitations have been measured in high field high frequency ESR. Although the Ni(II) ions form structurally a 2-leg ladder, an isolated dimer model consistently describes the observations very well. The analysis of the temperature dependent magnetization data leads to a magnetic exchange constant of J=43 K along the rungs of the ladder and an average value of the g-factor of 2.25. From the ESR measurements, we determined the single ion anisotropy to D=11.5 K. The validity of the isolated dimer model is supported by Quantum Monte Carlo calculations, performed for several ratios of interdimer and intradimer magnetic exchange and taking into account the experimentally determined single ion anisotropy. The results can be understood in terms of the different coordination and superexchange angles of the oxalate ligands along the rungs and legs of the 2-leg spin ladder.

Thermal transport of the XXZ chain in a magnetic field

We study the heat conduction of the spin-1/2 XXZ chain in finite magnetic fields where magnetothermal effects arise. Due to the integrability of this model, all transport coefficients diverge, signaled by finite Drude weights. Using exact diagonalization and mean-field theory, we analyze the temperature and field dependence of the thermal Drude weight for various exchange anisotropies under the condition of zero magnetization-current flow. First, we find a strong magnetic field dependence of the Drude weight, including a suppression of its magnitude with increasing field strength and a non-monotonic field-dependence of the peak position. Second, for small exchange anisotropies and magnetic fields in the massless as well as in the fully polarized regime the mean-field approach is in excellent agreement with the exact diagonalization data. Third, at the field-induced quantum critical line between the para- and ferromagnetic region we propose a universal low-temperature behavior of the thermal Drude weight.

Giant spin canting in the S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic chain [CuPM(NO3)2(H2O)2]n observed by 13C-NMR

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study on copper pyrimidine dinitrate [CuPM(NO3)2(H2O)2]n, a one-dimensional S = 1/2 antiferromagnet with alternating local symmetry. From the local susceptibility measured by NMR at the three inequivalent carbon sites in the pyrimidine molecule we deduce a giant spin canting, i.e., an additional staggered magnetization perpendicular to the applied external field at low temperatures. The magnitude of the transverse magnetization, the spin canting of 52 degrees at 10 K and 9.3 T and its temperature dependence are in excellent agreement with exact diagonalization calculations.

Bound states in weakly disordered spin ladders

We study the appearance of bound states in the spin gap of spin-1/2 ladders induced by weak bond disorder. Starting from the strong-coupling limit, i.e., the limit of weakly coupled dimers, we perform a projection on the single-triplet subspace and derive the position of bound states for the single impurity problem of one modified coupling as well as for small impurity clusters. The case of a finite concentration of impurities is treated with the coherent-potential approximation in the strong-coupling limit and compared with numerical results. Furthermore, we analyze the details in the structure of the density of states and relate their origin to the influence of impurity clusters.

Bond-impurity induced bound states in disordered spin-1/2 ladders

We discuss the effect of weak bond-disorder in two-leg spin ladders on the dispersion relation of the elementary triplet excitations with a particular focus on the appearance of bound states in the spin gap. Both the cases of modified exchange couplings on the rungs and the legs of the ladder are analyzed. Based on a projection on the single-triplet subspace, the single-impurity and small cluster problems are treated analytically in the strong-coupling limit. Numerically, we study the problem of a single impurity in a spin ladder by exact diagonalization to obtain the low-lying excitations. At finite concentrations and to leading order in the inter-rung coupling, we compare the spectra obtained from numerical diagonalization of large systems within the single-triplet subspace with the results of diagrammatic techniques, namely low-concentration and coherent-potential approximations. The contribution of small impurity clusters to the density of states is also discussed.
