Lattice Dynamics in a strongly dimerized low-dimensional model with orbital ordering

We study the interplay of spin, orbital and lattice degrees of freedom in a one-dimensional Kugel-Khomskii model coupled to phonons. In the vicinity of the dimer point we analyze the excitation spectrum, mapping the spin and orbital degrees of freedom to bond operators. In particular we study the renormalization of the phonon propagator due to coupling to the orbital and magnetic excitations. Considering both, ferro- and antiferro-orbital ordering we will show that the appearance of orbiton shake-up processes in the phonon spectrum is sensitive to the type of Jahn-Teller distortion. The relevance of our results for optical spectroscopy on low dimensional transition metal compounds will be discussed.

Transport in dimerized and frustrated spin systems

We analyze the Drude weight for both spin and thermal transport of one-dimensional spin-1/2 systems by means of exact diagonalization at finite temperatures. While the Drude weights are non-zero for finite systems, we find indications of a vanishing of the Drude weights in the thermodynamic limit for non-integrable models implying normal transport behavior.

Thermal conductivity of one-dimensional spin-1/2 systems

We analyze the thermal conductivity of frustrated spin-1/2 chains within linear-response theory focusing on its frequency dependence at finite temperatures. Using exact diagonalization, the low-frequency limit of the thermal conductivity is discussed in the high-temperature regime.

Comment on "Anomalous Thermal Conductivity of Frustrated Heisenberg Spin Chains and Ladders"

In a recent letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 156603 (2002); cond-mat/0201300], Alvarez and Gros have numerically analyzed the Drude weight for thermal transport in spin ladders and frustrated chains of up to 14 sites and have proposed that it remains finite in the thermodynamic limit. In this comment, we argue that this conclusion cannot be sustained if the finite-size analysis is taken to larger system sizes.

High-field magnetization study of the S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain [PM Cu(NO$_3$)$_2$(H$_2$O)$_2$]$_n$ with a field-induced gap

We present a high-field magnetization study of the $S$ = 1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain [PM Cu(NO$_3$)$_2$(H$_2$O)$_2$]$_n$. For this material, as result of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and a staggered $g$ tensor, the ground state is characterized by an anisotropic field-induced spin excitation gap and a staggered magnetization. Our data reveal the qualitatively different behavior in the directions of maximum and zero spin excitation gap. The data are analyzed via exact diagonalization of a linear spin chain with up to 20 sites and on basis of the Bethe ansatz equations, respectively. For both directions we find very good agreement between experimental data and theoretical calculations. We extract the magnetic coupling strength $J/k_B$ along the chain direction to 36.3(5) K and determine the field dependence of the staggered magnetization component $m_s$.

Magnon Heat Transport in doped $\rm La_2CuO_4$

We present results of the thermal conductivity of $\rm La_2CuO_4$ and $\rm La_{1.8}Eu_{0.2}CuO_4$ single-crystals which represent model systems for the two-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a square lattice. We find large anisotropies of the thermal conductivity, which are explained in terms of two-dimensional heat conduction by magnons within the CuO$_2$ planes. Non-magnetic Zn substituted for Cu gradually suppresses this magnon thermal conductivity $κ_{\mathrm{mag}}$. A semiclassical analysis of $κ_{\mathrm{mag}}$ is shown to yield a magnon mean free path which scales linearly with the reciprocal concentration of Zn-ions.

Thermal conductivity of anisotropic and frustrated spin-1/2 chains

We analyze the thermal conductivity of anisotropic and frustrated spin-1/2 chains using analytical and numerical techniques. This includes mean-field theory based on the Jordan-Wigner transformation, bosonization, and exact diagonalization of systems with N<=18 sites. We present results for the temperature dependence of the zero-frequency weight of the conductivity for several values of the anisotropy Δ. In the gapless regime, we show that the mean-field theory compares well to known results and that the low-temperature limit is correctly described by bosonization. In the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic gapped regime, we analyze the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity numerically. The convergence of the finite-size data is remarkably good in the ferromagnetic case. Finally, we apply our numerical method and mean-field theory to the frustrated chain where we find a good agreement of these two approaches on finite systems. Our numerical data do not yield evidence for a diverging thermal conductivity in the thermodynamic limit in case of the antiferromagnetic gapped regime of the frustrated chain.

Low Energy Singlets in the Excitation Spectrum of the Spin Tetrahedra System Cu_2Te_2O_5Br_2

Low energy Raman scattering of the s=1/2 spin tetrahedra system Cu_2Te_2O_5Br_2 is dominated by an excitation at 18 cm^{-1} corresponding to an energy E_S=0.6Δ, with Δthe spin gap of the compound. For elevated temperatures this mode shows a soft mode-like decrease in energy pointing to an instability of the system. The isostructural reference system Cu_2Te_2O_5Cl_2 with a presumably larger inter-tetrahedra coupling does not show such a low energy mode. Instead its excitation spectrum and thermodynamic properties are compatible with long range Neel-ordering. We discuss the observed effects in the context of quantum fluctuations and competing ground states.

Evidence for an unconventional magnetic instability in the spin-tetrahedra system Cu_2Te_2O_5Br_2

Thermodynamic experiments as well as Raman scattering have been used to study the magnetic instabilities in the spin-tetrahedra systems Cu_2Te_2O_5X_2, X=Cl and Br. While the phase transition observed in the Cl system at T_o=18.2 K is consistent with 3D AF ordering, the phase transition at T_o=11.3 K in the Br system has several unusual features. We propose an explanation in terms of weakly coupled tetrahedra with a singlet-triplet gap and low lying singlets.

Single-hole dynamics in the half-filled two-dimensional Kondo-Hubbard model

We consider the Kondo lattice model in two dimensions at half filling. In addition to the fermionic hopping integral $t$ and the superexchange coupling $J$ the role of a Coulomb repulsion $U$ in the conduction band is investigated. We find the model to display a magnetic order-disorder transition in the U-J plane with a critical value of J_c which is decreasing as a function of U. The single particle spectral function A(k,w) is computed across this transition. For all values of J > 0, and apart from shadow features present in the ordered state, A(k,w) remains insensitive to the magnetic phase transition with the first low-energy hole states residing at momenta k = (\pm π, \pm π). As J -> 0 the model maps onto the Hubbard Hamiltonian. Only in this limit, the low-energy spectral weight at k = (\pm π, \pm π) vanishes with first electron removal-states emerging at wave vectors on the magnetic Brillouin zone boundary. Thus, we conclude that (i) the local screening of impurity spins determines the low energy behavior of the spectral function and (ii) one cannot deform continuously the spectral function of the Mott-Hubbard insulator at J=0 to that of the Kondo insulator at J > J_c. Our results are based on both, T=0 Quantum Monte-Carlo simulations and a bond-operator mean-field theory.

Magnon Heat Transport in (Sr,La)_14Cu_24O_41

We have measured the thermal heat conductivity kappa of the compounds Sr_14Cu_24O_41 and Ca_9La_5Cu_24O_41 containing doped and undoped spin ladders, respectively. We find a huge anisotropy of both, the size and the temperature dependence of kappa which we interpret in terms of a very large heat conductivity due to the magnetic excitations of the one-dimensional spin ladders. This magnon heat conductivity decreases with increasing hole doping of the ladders. The magnon heat transport is analyzed theoretically using a simple kinetic model. From this analysis we determine the spin gap and the temperature dependent mean free path of the magnons which ranges by several thousand angstroms at low temperature. The relevance of several scattering channels for the magnon transport is discussed.

Optical absorption of spin ladders

We present a theory of phonon-assisted optical two-magnon absorption in two-leg spin-ladders. Based on the strong intra-rung-coupling limit we show that collective excitations of total spin S=0, 1 and 2 exist outside of the two-magnon continuum. It is demonstrated that the singlet collective state has a clear signature in the optical spectrum.

High-dimensional quantum dynamics of adsorption and desorption of H$_2$ at Cu(111)

We performed high-dimensional quantum dynamical calculations of the dissociative adsorption and associative desorption of hydrogen on Cu(111). The potential energy surface (PES) is obtained from density functional theory calculations. Two regimes of dynamics are found, at low energies sticking is determined by the minimum energy barrier, at high energies by the distribution of barrier heights. Experimental results are well-reproduced qualitatively, but some quantitative discrepancies are identified as well.
