Electron and Photon Scattering on Three-Nucleon Bound States

A big spectrum of processes induced by real and virtual photons on the 3He and 3H nuclei is theoretically investigated through many examples based on nonrelativistic Faddeev calculations for bound and continuum states. The modern nucleon-nucleon potential AV18 together with the three-nucleon force UrbanaIX is used. The single nucleon current is augmented by explicit pi- and rho-like two-body currents which fulfill the current continuity equation together with the corresponding parts of the AV18 potential. We also employ the Siegert theorem, which induces many-body contributions to the current operator. The interplay of these different dynamical ingredients in the various electromagnetic processes is studied and the theory is compared to the experimental data. Overall we find fair to good agreement but also cases of strong disagreement between theory and experiment, which calls for improved dynamics. In several cases we refer the reader to the work of other groups and compare their results with ours. In addition we list a number of predictions for observables in different processes which would challenge this dynamical scenario even more stringently and systematically.

Relativistic effects in neutron-deuteron elastic scattering

We solved the three-nucleon Faddeev equation including relativistic features such as relativistic kinematics, boost effects and Wigner spin rotations. As dynamical input a relativistic nucleon-nucleon interaction exactly on-shell equivalent to the AV18 potential has been used. The effects of Wigner rotations for elastic scattering observables were found to be small. The boost effects are significant at higher energies. They diminish the transition matrix elements at higher energies and lead in spite of the increased relativistic phase-space factor as compared to the nonrelativistic one to rather small effects in the cross section, which are mostly restricted to the backward angles.

The reaction 2H(p,pp)n in three kinematical configurations at E_p = 16 MeV

We measured the cross sections of the $^2$H(p,pp)n breakup reaction at E$_p$=16 MeV in three kinematical configurations: the np final-state interaction (FSI), the co-planar star (CST), and an intermediate-star (IST) geometry. The cross sections are compared with theoretical predictions based on the CD Bonn potential alone and combined with the updated 2$π$-exchange Tucson-Melbourne three-nucleon force (TM99'), calculated without inclusion of the Coulomb interaction. The resulting excellent agreement between data and pure CD Bonn predictions in the FSI testifies to the smallness of three-nucleon force (3NF) effects as well as the insignificance of the Coulomb force for this particular configuration and energy. The CST also agrees well whereas the IST results show small deviations between measurements and theory seen before in the pd breakup space-star geometries which point to possible Coulomb effects. An additional comparison with EFT predictions (without 3NF) up to order N$^3$LO shows excellent agreement in the FSI case and a rather similar agreement as for CD Bonn in the CST and IST situations.

The importance of few-nucleon physics at low energy

This manuscript originated from the discussion at the workshop on the "Future of Few-body Low Energy Experimental Physics" (FFLEEP), which was held at the University of Trento on December 4-7, 2002 and has been written in its present form on March 19, 2003. It illustrates a selection of theoretical advancements in the nuclear few-body problem, including two- and many-nucleon interactions, the three-nucleon bound and scattering system, the four-body problem, the A-body (A$>$4) problem, and fields of related interest, such as reactions of astrophysical interest and few-neutron systems. Particular attention is called to the contradictory situation one experiences in this field: while theory is currently advancing and has the potential to inspire new experiments, the experimental activity is nevertheless rapidly phasing out. If such a trend will continue, advancements in this area will become critically difficult.

Rescattering effects and two-step process in kaon photoproduction on the deuteron

Kaon photoproduction on the deuteron is investigated by considering YN and KN rescattering and the two-step process gamma d --> pi NN --> KYN. A strong enhancement in the total cross section is found from the two-step process. YN rescattering has remarkable effects in the inclusive and exclusive cross section, while the effect of KN rescattering is much less important.

Three-Body Scattering without Partial Waves

The Faddeev equation for three-body scattering at arbitrary energies is formulated in momentum space and directly solved in terms of momentum vectors without employing a partial wave decomposition. In its simplest form the Faddeev equation for identical bosons is a three-dimensional integral equation in five variables, magnitudes of relative momenta and angles. The elastic differential cross section, semi-exclusive d(N,N') cross sections and total cross sections of both elastic and breakup processes in the intermediate energy range up to about 1 GeV are calculated based on a Malfliet-Tjon type potential, and the convergence of the multiple scattering series is investigated in every case. In general a truncation in the first or second order in the two-body t-matrix is quite insufficient.

Does Σ-Σ-αForm a Quasi-Bound State?

We have investigated the possible existence of a quasi-bound state for the Σ-Σ-αsystem in the framework of Faddeev calculations. We are particularly interested in the state of total iso-spin T=2, since for an inert αparticle there is no strong conversion to Ξ-N-αor Λ-Λ-αpossible. A Σ-αoptical potential based on Nijmegen model D and original Σ-Σinteractions of the series of Nijmegen potentials NSC97 as well a simulated Gaussian type versions thereof are used. Our investigation of the Σ-Σ-αsystem leads to a quasi bound state where, depending on the potential parameters, the energy ranges between -1.4 and -2.4 MeV and the level width is about 0.2MeV.

Low-momentum nucleon-nucleon interaction and its application to the few-nucleon systems

Low-momentum nucleon-nucleon interactions are derived within the framework of a unitary-transformation theory, starting with realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions. A cutoff momentum Lambda is introduced to specify a border between the low- and high-momentum spaces. By the Faddeev-Yakubovsky calculations the low-momentum interactions are investigated with respect to the dependence of ground-state energies of ^3H and ^4He on the parameter Lambda. It is found that we need the momentum cutoff parameter Lambda >= 5 fm^-1 in order to reproduce satisfactorily the exact values of the binding energies for ^3H and ^4He. The calculation with Lambda =2 fm^-1 recommended by Bogner et al. leads to considerable overbinding at least for the few-nucleon systems.

On the usefulness of the spectral function concept

The usefulness of the spectral function S in the process 3He(e,e'N) has been investigated in a kinematical regime constrained by the conditions that the three-nucleon center-of-mass energy is less than 150 MeV and the magnitude of the three-momentum transfer smaller than 600 MeV/c. Results based on a full treatment of the final state interaction are compared to the spectral function approximation. In the case of proton knockout in the direction of the photon kinematical conditions have been identified where both response functions, RL and RT, can be well approximated by S. These conditions occur for certain low missing momenta and missing energies but not in all cases. So care is required. In case of neutron knockout only RT is a candidate for an approximate treatment by S. In the case of RL the concept of using S is not valid in the studied kinematical regime. This does not exclude the possibility that beyond that regime it might be useful. Possible applications using S for the extraction of electromagnetic form factors of the nucleons are pointed out.

The Operator form of 3H (3He) and its Spin Structure

An operator form of the 3N bound state is proposed. It consists of eight operators formed out of scalar products in relative momentum and spin vectors, which are applied on a pure 3N spin 1/2 state. Each of the operators is associated with a scalar function depending only on the magnitudes of the two relative momenta and the angle between them. The connection between the standard partial wave decomposition of the 3N bound state and the operator form is established, and the decomposition of these scalar function in terms of partial wave components and analytically known auxiliary functions is given. That newly established operator form of the 3N bound state exhibits the dominant angular and spin dependence analytically. The scalar functions are tabulated and can be downloaded. As an application the spin dependent nucleon momentum distribution in a polarized 3N bound state is calculated to illustrate the use of the new form of the 3N bound state.

Electron Scattering on 3He - a Playground to Test Nuclear Dynamics

The big spectrum of electron induced processes on 3He is illustrated by several examples based on Faddeev calculations with modern nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon forces as well as exchange currents. The kinematical region is restricted to a mostly nonrelativistic one where the three-nucleon c.m. energy is below the pion production threshold and the three-momentum of the virtual photon is sufficiently below the nucleon mass. Comparisons with available data are shown and cases of agreement and disagreement are found. It is argued that new and precise data are needed to systematically check the present day dynamical ingredients.

Model Study of Three-Body Forces in the Three-Body Bound State

The Faddeev equations for the three-body bound state with two- and three-body forces are solved directly as three-dimensional integral equation. The numerical feasibility and stability of the algorithm, which does not employ partial wave decomposition is demonstrated. The three-body binding energy and the full wave function are calculated with Malfliet-Tjon-type two-body potentials and scalar Fujita-Miyazawa type three-body forces. The influence of the strength and range of the three-body force on the wave function, single particle momentum distributions and the two-body correlation functions are studied in detail. The extreme case of pure three-body forces is investigated as well.

Systematic investigation of the elastic proton-deuteron differential cross section at intermediate energies

To investigate the importance of three-nucleon forces (3NF) systematically over a broad range of intermediate energies, the differential cross sections of elastic proton-deuteron scattering have been measured at proton bombarding energies of 108, 120, 135, 150, 170 and 190 MeV at center-of-mass angles between $30^\circ$ and $170^\circ$. Comparisons with Faddeev calculations show unambiguously the shortcomings of calculations employing only two-body forces and the necessity of including 3NF. They also show the limitations of the latest few-nucleon calculations at backward angles, especially at higher beam energies. Some of these discrepancies could be partially due to relativistic effects. Data at lowest energy are also compared with a recent calculation based on \chipt.

The Nd Break-Up Process in Leading Order in a Three-Dimensional Approach

A three-dimensional approach based on momentum vectors as variables for solving the three nucleon Faddeev equation in first order is presented. The nucleon-deuteron break-up amplitude is evaluated in leading order in the NN T-matrix, which is also generated directly in three dimensions avoiding a summation of partial wave contributions. A comparison of semi-exclusive observables in the $d(p,n)pp$ reaction calculated in this scheme with those generated by a traditional partial wave expansion shows perfect agreement at lower energies. At about 200 MeV nucleon laboratory energies deviations in the peak of the cross section appear, which may indicate that special care is required in a partial wave approach for energies at and higher than 200 MeV. The role of higher order rescattering processes beyond the leading order in the NN T-matrix is investigated with the result, that at 200 MeV rescattering still provides important contributions to the cross section and certain spin observables. The influence of a relativistic treatment of the kinematics is investigated. It is found that relativistic effects become important at projectile energies higher than 200 MeV.

Final State Interaction Effects in pol 3He(pol e,e'p)

Asymmetries in quasi-elastic pol 3He(pol e,e'p) have been measured at a momentum transfer of 0.67 (GeV/c)^2 and are compared to a calculation which takes into account relativistic kinematics in the final state and a relativistic one-body current operator. With an exact solution of the Faddeev equation for the 3He-ground state and an approximate treatment of final state interactions in the continuum good agreement is found with the experimental data.
