Complex Energy Method for Scattering Processes

A method for solving few-body scattering equations is proposed and examined. The solution of the scattering equations at complex energies is analytically continued to get scattering T-matrix with real positive energy. Numerical examples document that the method works well for two-nucleon scattering and three-nucleon scattering, if the set of complex energies is properly chosen.

The Proton-Deuteron Break-Up Process in a Three-Dimensional Approach

The pd break-up amplitude in the Faddeev scheme is calculated by employing a three-dimensional method without partial wave decomposition (PWD). In a first step and in view of higher energies only the leading term is evaluated and this for the process d(p,n)pp. A comparison with the results based on PWD reveals discrepancies in the cross section around 200 MeV. This indicates the onset of a limitation of the partial wave scheme. Also, around 200 MeV relativistic effects are clearly visible and the use of relativistic kinematics shifts the cross section peak to where the experimental peak is located. The theoretical peak height, however, is wrong and calls first of all for the inclusion of rescattering terms, which are shown to be important in a nonrelativistic full Faddeev calculation in PWD.

Lorentz Boosted NN Potential for Few-Body Systems: Application to the three-nucleon bound state

A Lorentz boosted two-nucleon potential is introduced in the context of equal time relativistic quantum mechanics. The dynamical input for the boosted nucleon-nucleon (NN) potential is based on realistic NN potentials, which by a suitable scaling of the momenta are transformed into NN potentials belonging to a relativistic two-nucleon Schroedinger equation in the c.m. system. This resulting Lorentz boosted potential is consistent with a previously introduced boosted two-body t-matrix. It is applied in relativistic Faddeev equations for the three-nucleon bound state to calculate the ^3H binding energy. Like in previous calculations the boost effects for the two-body subsystems are repulsive and lower the binding energy.

Indications for the Nonexistence of Three-Neutron Resonances near the Physical Region

The pending question of the existence of three-neutron resonances near the physical energy region is reconsidered. Finite rank neutron-neutron forces are used in Faddeev equations, which are analytically continued into the unphysical energy sheet below the positive real energy axis. The trajectories of the three-neutron S-matrix poles in the states of total angular momenta and parity J^π=1/2 +- and J^π= 3/2 +- are traced out as a function of artificial enhancement factors of the neutron-neutron forces. The final positions of the S-matrix poles removing the artificial factors are found in all cases to be far away from the positive real energy axis, which provides a strong indication for the nonexistence of nearby three-neutron resonances. The pole trajectories close to the threshold E=0 are also predicted out of auxiliary generated three-neutron bound state energies using the Padé method and agree very well with the directly calculated ones.

The alpha-particle based on modern nuclear forces

The Faddeev-Yakubovsky equations for the alpha-particle are solved. Accurate results are obtained for several modern NN interaction models, which include charge-symmetry breaking effects in the NN force, nucleon mass dependences as well as the Coulomb interaction. These models are augmented by three-nucleon forces of different types and adjusted to the 3N binding energy. Our results are close to the experimental binding energy with a slight overbinding. Thus there is only little room left for the contribution of possible 4N interactions to the alpha-particle binding energy. We also discuss model dependences of the binding energies and the wave functions.

Theoretical predictions for extraction of GEn from semi-inclusive electron scattering on polarized 3He based on various nucleon-nucleon interactions

The process 3He(e,e'n) with polarized electrons and 3He in the initial state is theoretically analyzed with the aim to search for sensitivity to the electric form factor of the neutron, GEn. Faddeev calculations based on five high precision nucleon-nucleon force models are employed and stability versus exchange of the nucleon-nucleon forces is demonstrated.

The Hypernuclei $^4_Λ$He and $^4_Λ$H: Challenges for Modern Hyperon-Nucleon Forces

The hypernuclei $^4_Λ$He and $^4_Λ$H provide important information on the hyperon-nucleon interaction. We present accurate Faddeev-Yakubovsky calculations for the $Λ$ separation energies of the $0^+$ ground and the $1^+$ excited states based on the Nijmegen SC YN interactions. We explicitly take the $Σ$ admixture into account. Mass differences of the baryons and the charge-dependence of the interaction are considered. The results show that the Nijmegen models cannot predict all separation energies simultaneously hinting to failures of the current interaction models.

The $^3$He(e, e$'$d)p Reaction in q$ω$-constant Kinematics

The cross section for the $^3$He(e, e$'$d)p reaction has been measured as a function of the missing momentum $p_m$ in q$ω$ -constant kinematics at beam energies of 370 and 576 MeV for values of the three-momentum transfer $q$ of 412, 504 and 604 \mevc. The L(+TT), T and LT structure functions have been separated for $q$ = 412 and 504 \mevc. The data are compared to three-body Faddeev calculations, including meson-exchange currents (MEC), and to calculations based on a covariant diagrammatic expansion. The influence of final-state interactions and meson-exchange currents is discussed. The $p_m$-dependence of the data is reasonably well described by all calculations. However, the most advanced Faddeev calculations, which employ the AV18 nucleon-nucleon interaction and include MEC, overestimate the measured cross sections, especially the longitudinal part, and at the larger values of $q$. The diagrammatic approach gives a fair description of the cross section, but under(over)estimates the longitudinal (transverse) structure function.

Spin dependent momentum distributions of proton-deuteron clusters in 3He from electron scattering on polarized 3He: theoretical predictions

The process $\overrightarrow{^3{\rm He}}(e,e'\vec{p})d $ (or $\overrightarrow{^3{\rm He}}(e,e'\vec{d})p $) is studied theoretically in a Faddeev treatment with the aim to have access to the spin-dependent momentum distribution of ${\vec p} {\vec d} $ clusters in polarized $^3$He. Final state interactions and meson exchange currents turn out to have a strong influence in the considered kinematical regime (below the pion threshold). This precludes the direct access to the momentum distribution except for small deuteron momenta. Nevertheless, the results for the longitudinal and transverse response functions are interesting as they reflect our present day understanding of the reaction mechanism and therefore data would be very useful.

The three-nucleon bound state using realistic potential models

The bound states of $^3$H and $^3$He have been calculated using the Argonne $v_{18}$ plus the Urbana three-nucleon potential. The isospin $T=3/2$ state have been included in the calculations as well as the $n$-$p$ mass difference. The $^3$H-$^3$He mass difference has been evaluated through the charge dependent terms explicitly included in the two-body potential. The calculations have been performed using two different methods: the solution of the Faddeev equations in momentum space and the expansion on the correlated hyperspherical harmonic basis. The results are in agreement within 0.1% and can be used as benchmark tests. Results for the CD-Bonn interaction are also presented. It is shown that the $^3$H and $^3$He binding energy difference can be predicted model independently.

Benchmark Calculation of the Three-Nucleon Photodisintegration

A benchmark is set on the three-nucleon photodisintegration calculating the total cross section with modern realistic two- and three-nucleon forces (AV18, UrbIX) using both the Faddeev equations and the Lorentz Integral Transform method. This test shows that the precision of three-body calculations involving continuum states is considerably higher than experimental uncertainties. Effects due to retardations, higher multipoles, meson exchange currents and Coulomb force are studied.

Few-Nucleon Systems with Two-Nucleon Forces from Chiral Effective Field Theory

Nucleon-nucleon (NN) forces from chiral perturbation theory at next-to-leading (NLO) and next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) are applied to systems with two, three and four nucleons. At NNLO, we consider two versions of the chiral potential which differ in the strength of the two-pion-exchange (TPE) but describe two nucleon observables equally well. The NNLO potential leads to unphysical deeply bound states in the low partial waves and effects of the 3N forces, which appear first at this order, are expected to be large. We provide arguments for a reduction of the TPE potential and introduce the NNLO* version of the NN forces. We calculate nd scattering observables as well as various properties of 3H and 4He with the NNLO* potential and find good agreement with the data and with predictions based upon the standard high-precision potentials. We find an improved description of the 3H and 4He binding energies.

Benchmark Test Calculation of a Four-Nucleon Bound State

In the past, several efficient methods have been developed to solve the Schroedinger equation for four-nucleon bound states accurately. These are the Faddeev-Yakubovsky, the coupled-rearrangement-channel Gaussian-basis variational, the stochastic variational, the hyperspherical variational, the Green's function Monte Carlo, the no-core shell model and the effective interaction hyperspherical harmonic methods. In this article we compare the energy eigenvalue results and some wave function properties using the realistic AV8' NN interaction. The results of all schemes agree very well showing the high accuracy of our present ability to calculate the four-nucleon bound state.

New Forms of Deuteron Equations and Wave Function Representations

A recently developed helicity basis for nucleon-nucleon (NN) scattering is applied to th e deuteron bound state. Here the total spin of the deuteron is treated in such a helicity representation. For the bound state, two sets of two coupled eigenvalue equations are developed, where the amplitudes depend on two and one variable, respectively. Numerical illustrations based on the realistic Bonn-B NN potential are given. In addition, an `operator form' of the deuteron wave function is presented, and several momentum dependent spin densities are derived and shown, in which the angular dependence is given analytically.

Nucleon-deuteron elastic scattering as a tool to probe properties of three-nucleon forces

Faddeev equations for elastic Nd scattering have been solved using modern NN forces combined with the Tucson-Melbourne two-pion exchange three-nucleon force, with a modification thereof closer to chiral symmetry and the Urbana IX three-nucleon force. Theoretical predictions for the differential cross section and several spin observables using NN forces only and NN forces combined with three-nucleon force models are compared to each other and to the existing data. A wide range of energies from 3 to 200 MeV is covered. Especially at the higher energies striking three-nucleon force effects are found, some of which are supported by the still rare set of data, some are in conflict with data and thus very likely point to defects in those three-nucleon force models.

Electromagnetic K+ production on the deuteron with hyperon recoil polarization

Photo- and electroproduction processes of K+ on the deuteron are investigated theoretically. Modern hyperon-nucleon forces as well as an updated kaon production operator on the nucleon are used. Sizable effects of the hyperon-nucleon final state interaction are seen in various observables. Especially the photoproduction double polarization observable C_z is shown to provide a handle to distinguish different hyperon-nucleon force models.

Hypernuclear Physics with Photons

We review the opportunities and challenges in the field of hypernuclear physics with electromagnetic probes. An overview is presented regarding our current understanding of the elementary production process on the nucleon. This amplitude is then used in the nuclear environment to study the hyperon-nucleon (YN) interaction. We discuss two scenarios: hypernuclear excitation that allows the investigation of hypernuclear structure and the bound Lambda in the nucleus, and quasifree kaon production on the deuteron and on nuclei, which permits a more direct access to the YN force. Specific examples are given for few-body systems and shell-model nuclei.
