Decay of an ultracold fermionic lithium gas near a Feshbach resonance

We studied the magnetic field dependence of the inelastic decay of an ultracold, optically trapped 6-Li gas of different spin compositions. The spin mixture of the two lowest hyperfine states showed two decay resonances at 550 G and 680 G due to two-body collisions, close to the predicted Feshbach resonance of the elastic s-wave collisions at 800 G. The rapid decay near Feshbach resonances found in bosonic gases was found to be suppressed by the Pauli exclusion principle. The observed lifetimes of several hundred milliseconds are much longer than the expected time for Cooper pair formation and the phase transition to superfluidity in the vicinity of the Feshbach resonance.

Bose-Einstein condensates near a microfabricated surface

Magnetically and optically confined Bose-Einstein condensates were studied near a microfabricated surface. Condensate fragmentation observed in microfabricated magnetic traps was not observed in optical dipole traps at the same location. The measured condensate lifetime was $\geq 20$ s and independent of the atom-surface separation under both magnetic and optical confinement. Radio-frequency spin-flip transitions driven by technical noise were directly observed for optically confined condensates and could limit the condensate lifetime in microfabricated magnetic traps.

Coherent Collisions between Bose-Einstein Condensates

We study the non-degenerate parametric amplifier for matter waves, implemented by colliding two Bose-Einstein condensates. The coherence of the amplified waves is shown by observing high contrast interference with a reference wave and by reversing the amplification process. Since our experiments also place limits on all known sources of decoherence, we infer that relative number squeezing is most likely present between the amplified modes. Finally, we suggest that reversal of the amplification process may be used to detect relative number squeezing without requiring single-particle detection.

Sodium Bose-Einstein Condensates in the F=2 State in a Large-volume Optical Trap

We have investigated the properties of Bose-Einstein condensates of sodium atoms in the upper hyperfine ground state in a purely optical trap. Condensates in the high-field seeking $| F=2, m_F=-2>$ state were created from initially prepared $| F=1,m_F=-1>$ condensates using a one-photon microwave transition at 1.77 GHz. The condensates were stored in a large-volume optical trap created by a single laser beam with an elliptical focus. We found condensates in the stretched state $| F=2, m_F=-2>$ to be stable for several seconds at densities in the range of $10^{14}$ atoms/cm$^{3}$. In addition, we studied the clock transition $| F=1, m_F=0>$ $\to$ $| F=2, m_F=0>$ in a sodium Bose-Einstein condensate and determined a density-dependent frequency shift of $(2.44\pm 0.25) \times 10^{-12}$ Hz cm$^{3}$.

Topological vortex formation in a Bose-Einstein condensate

Vortices were imprinted in a Bose-Einstein condensate using topological phases. Sodium condensates held in a Ioffe-Pritchard magnetic trap were transformed from a non-rotating state to one with quantized circulation by adiabatically inverting the magnetic bias field along the trap axis. Using surface wave spectroscopy, the axial angular momentum per particle of the vortex states was found to be consistent with $2\hbar$ or $4\hbar$, depending on the hyperfine state of the condensate.

Propagation of Bose-Einstein condensates in a magnetic waveguide

Gaseous Bose-Einstein condensates of 2-3 million atoms were loaded into a microfabricated magnetic trap using optical tweezers. Subsequently, the condensates were released into a magnetic waveguide and propagated 12 mm. Single-mode propagation was observed along homogeneous segments of the waveguide. Inhomogeneities in the guiding potential arose from geometric deformations of the microfabricated wires and caused strong transverse excitations. Such deformations may restrict the waveguide physics that can be explored with propagating condensates.

Two-species mixture of quantum degenerate Bose and Fermi gases

We have produced a macroscopic quantum system in which a Li-6 Fermi sea coexists with a large and stable Na-23 Bose-Einstein condensate. This was accomplished using inter-species sympathetic cooling of fermionic Li-6 in a thermal bath of bosonic Na-23.

Transport of Bose-Einstein Condensates with Optical Tweezers

We have transported gaseous Bose-Einstein condensates over distances up to 44 cm. This was accomplished by trapping the condensate in the focus of an infrared laser and translating the location of the laser focus with controlled acceleration. Condensates of order 1 million atoms were moved into an auxiliary chamber and loaded into a magnetic trap formed by a Z-shaped wire. This transport technique avoids the optical and mechanical access constraints of conventional condensate experiments and creates many new scientific opportunities.

Formation and Decay of Vortex Lattices in Bose-Einstein Condensates at Finite Temperatures

The dynamics of vortex lattices in stirred Bose-Einstein condensates have been studied at finite temperatures. The decay of the vortex lattice was observed non-destructively by monitoring the centrifugal distortions of the rotating condensate. The formation of the vortex lattice could be deduced from the increasing contrast of the vortex cores observed in ballistic expansion. In contrast to the decay, the formation of the vortex lattice is insensitive to temperature change.

Vortex Nucleation in a Stirred Bose-Einstein Condensate

We studied the nucleation of vortices in a Bose-Einstein condensate stirred by a laser beam. We observed the vortex cores using time-of-flight absorption imaging. By varying the size of the stirrer, we observed either discrete resonances or a broad response as a function of the frequency of the stirrer's motion. Stirring beams small compared to the condensate size generated vortices below the critical rotation frequency for the nucleation of surface modes, suggesting a local mechanism of generation. In addition, we observed the centrifugal distortion of the condensate due to the rotating vortex lattice and found evidence for bent vortices.

Realization of Bose-Einstein condensates in lower dimensions

Bose-Einstein condensates of sodium atoms have been prepared in optical and magnetic traps in which the energy-level spacing in one or two dimensions exceeds the interaction energy between atoms, realizing condensates of lower dimensionality. The cross-over into two-dimensional and one-dimensional condensates was observed by a change in aspect ratio and saturation of the release energy when the number of trapped atoms was reduced.

Observation of vortex phase singularities in Bose-Einstein condensates

We have observed phase singularities due to vortex excitation in Bose-Einstein condensates. Vortices were created by moving a laser beam through a condensate. They were observed as dislocations in the interference fringes formed by the stirred condensate and a second unperturbed condensate. The velocity dependence for vortex excitation and the time scale for re-establishing a uniform phase across the condensate were determined.

Dissipationless flow and superfluidity in gaseous Bose-Einstein condensates

We study dissipation in a dilute Bose gas induced by the motion of a macroscopic object. A blue-detuned laser beam focused on the center of a trapped gas of sodium atoms was scanned both above and below the BEC transition temperature. The measurements allow for a comparison between the heating rates for the superfluid and normal gas.

Enhancement and suppression of spontaneous emission and light scattering by quantum degeneracy

Quantum degeneracy modifies light scattering and spontaneous emission. For fermions, Pauli blocking leads to a suppression of both processes. In contrast, in a weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensate, we find spontaneous emission to be enhanced, while light scattering is suppressed. This difference is attributed to many-body effects and quantum interference in a Bose-Einstein condensate.

Amplification of light and atoms in a Bose--Einstein condensate

A Bose-Einstein condensate illuminated by a single off-resonant laser beam (``dressed condensate'') shows a high gain for matter waves and light. We have characterized the optical and atom-optical properties of the dressed condensate by injecting light or atoms, illuminating the key role of long-lived matter wave gratings produced by the condensate at rest and recoiling atoms. The narrow bandwidth for optical gain gave rise to an extremely slow group velocity of an amplified light pulse (1 m/s).

Observation of Superfluid Flow in a Bose-Einstein Condensed Gas

We have studied the hydrodynamic flow in a Bose-Einstein condensate stirred by a macroscopic object, a blue detuned laser beam, using nondestructive {\em in situ} phase contrast imaging. A critical velocity for the onset of a pressure gradient has been observed, and shown to be density dependent. The technique has been compared to a calorimetric method used previously to measure the heating induced by the motion of the laser beam.
