Soliton Solution for the Spin Current in Ferromagnetic Nanowire

We investigate the interaction of a periodic solution and one-soliton solution for the spin-polarized current in a uniaxial ferromagnetic nanowire. The amplitude and wave number of the periodic solution for the spin current have the different contribution to the width, velocity, and the amplitude of soliton solution, respectively. Moreover, we found that the soliton can be trapped only in space with a proper condition. At last we analyze the modulation instability and discuss dark solitary wave propagation for the spin current on the background of a periodic solution. In some special cases the solution can be expressed by the linear combination of periodic solution and soliton solution.

Abnormal Electronic Transport in Disordered Graphene Nanoribbon

We investigate the conductivity $σ$ of graphene nanoribbons with zigzag edges as a function of Fermi energy $E_F$ in the presence of the impurities with different potential range. The dependence of $σ(E_F)$ displays four different types of behavior, classified to different regimes of length scales decided by the impurity potential range and its density. Particularly, low density of long range impurities results in an extremely low conductance compared to the ballistic value, a linear dependence of $σ(E_F)$ and a wide dip near the Dirac point, due to the special properties of long range potential and edge states. These behaviors agree well with the results from a recent experiment by Miao \emph{et al.} (to appear in Science).

Controllable Josephson-Like Tunneling in Two-Component Bose-Einstein Condensates Coupled with Microwave via Feshbach Resonance and Trapping Potential

We put forward a scheme for controlling Josephson-like tunneling in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates coupled with microwave field via Feshbach resonance and tuning aspect ratio of trapping potential. We prove how to realize a perfect periodic oscillation from a fast damped and irregular oscillation on relative number of atoms in future experiment. In particular, intensity of Josephson-like tunneling can be successfully controlled through controlling speed of recovering the initial value of intra-atomic interaction and aspect ratio of trapping potential. Interestingly, we find that relative number of atoms represents two different types of oscillation in respond to periodic modulation of attractive intra-atomic interaction.

Topological Force and Torque in Spin-Orbit Coupling System

The topological force and torque are investigated in the systems with spin-orbit coupling. Our results show that the topological force and torque appears as a pure relativistic quantum effect in an electromagnetic field. The origin of both topological force and torque is the Zitterbewegung effect. Considering nonlinear behaviors of spin-orbit coupling, we address possible phenomena driven by the topological forces.

Observations of Herbig Ae Disks with Nulling Interferometry

We present the results of 10 micron nulling interferometric observations of 13 Herbig Ae stars using the Magellan I (Baade) and the MMT 6.5 m telescopes. A portion of the observations was completed with the adaptive secondary at the MMT. We have conclusively spatially resolved 3 of the 13 stars, HD 100546, AB Aur, and HD 179218, the latter two recently resolved using adaptive optics in combination with nulling interferometry. For the resolved objects we find that the 10 $μ$m emitting regions have a spatial extent of 15-30 AU in diameter. We also have some evidence for resolved emission surrounding an additional 2 stars (V892 Tau and R CrA). For those objects in our study with mid-IR SEDs classifications from Meeus et al. (2001), we find that the Group I objects (those with constant to increasing mid-IR flux) are more likely to be resolved, within our limited sample. This trend is evident in correlations in the inferred disk sizes vs. the sub-millimeter SED slope and disk size vs. fractional infrared luminosity of the systems. We explore the spatial distribution and orientation of the warm dust in the resolved systems and constrain physical models which are consistent with their observational signatures.

Pairwise Entanglement and Local Polarization of Heisenberg Model

The pairwise entanglement and local polarization of the ground state are discussed by studying the Heisenberg XX model in finite qubit case. The results show that: the ground state is composed by the micro state with the minimal total spin 0 (for even qubit) or 1/2 (for odd qubit), local polarization (LP) has intimate relation with the probability of the micro state in the ground state, the stronger the LP the smaller the probability, the same LP corresponding to the same probability; the pairwise entanglement of the ground state is the biggest in all the eigenvectors. We find when the qubit is small, the degenerate of state will decrease the pairwise entanglement, there has great different between the odd and the even qubit chain; when the qubit number is big, the effect of qubit number to the pairwise entanglement will disappear, the limited value will be round about 0.3424.

An Important Properties of Entanglement: Pairwise Entanglement can Only be Transferred by Entangled Pair

Basing on the calculation of all the pairwise entanglement in the $n$ ($n \leq 6$)-qubit Heisenberg XX open chain with system impurity, we find an important result: pairwise entanglement can only be transferred through entangled pair. The non-nearest pairwise entanglement will has the possibility to exist as long as there has even number qubit in their middle. This point means that we can get longer distance entanglement in solid system.

Exact soliton solutions and nonlinear modulation instability in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

We find one-, two-, and three-component solitons of the polar and ferromagnetic (FM) types in the general (non-integrable) model of a spinor (three-component) model of the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), based on a system of three nonlinearly coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. The stability of the solitons is studied by means of direct simulations, and, in a part, analytically, using linearized equations for small perturbations. Global stability of the solitons is considered by means of the energy comparison. As a result, ground-state and metastable soliton states of the FM and polar types are identified. For the special integrable version of the model, we develop the Darboux transformation (DT). As an application of the DT, analytical solutions are obtained that display full nonlinear evolution of the modulational instability (MI) of a continuous-wave (CW) state seeded by a small spatially periodic perturbation. Additionally, by dint of direct simulations, we demonstrate that solitons of both the polar and FM types, found in the integrable system, are structurally stable, i.e., they are robust under random changes of the relevant nonlinear coefficient in time.

A New Color-Magnitude Diagram for Palomar 11

We present new photometry for the Galactic thick disk globular cluster Palomar 11 extending well past the main sequence turn-off in the V and I bands. This photometry shows noticeable red giant and subgiant branches. The difference in magnitude between the red horizontal branch (red clump) and the subgiant branch is used to determine that Palomar 11 has an age of 10.4+/-0.5 Gyr. The red clump is used to derive a distance d_\sun=14.3+/-0.4 kpc, and a mean cluster reddening of E(V-I)=0.40+/-0.03. There is differential reddening across the cluster, of order δE(V-I)~0.07. The colour magnitude diagram of Palomar 11 is virtually identically to that of the thick disk globular cluster NGC 5927, implying that these two clusters have a similar age and metallicity. Palomar 11 has a slightly redder red giant branch than 47 Tuc, implying that Palomar 11 is 0.15 dex more metal-rich, or 1 Gyr older than 47 Tuc. Ca II triplet observations (Rutledge et al. 1997) favour the hypothesis that Palomar 11 is the same age as 47 Tuc, but slightly more metal-rich.

Phase diagram of two-species Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice

The exact macroscopic wave functions of two-species Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice beyond the tight-binding approximation are studied by solving the coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations. The phase diagram for superfluid and insulator phases of the condensates is determined analytically according to the macroscopic wave functions of the condensates, which are seen to be traveling matter waves.

Magnetic Soliton and Soliton Collisions of Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensates in an Optical Lattice

We study the magnetic soliton dynamics of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice which results in an effective Hamiltonian of anisotropic pseudospin chain. A modified Landau-Lifshitz equation is derived and exact magnetic soliton solutions are obtained analytically. Our results show that the time-oscillation of the soliton size can be controlled in practical experiment by adjusting of the light-induced dipole-dipole interaction. Moreover, the elastic collision of two solitons is investigated.

Exact soliton solution and inelastic two-soliton collision in spin chain driven by a time-dependent magnetic field

We investigate dynamics of exact N-soliton trains in spin chain driven by a time-dependent magnetic field by means of an inverse scattering transformation. The one-soliton solution indicates obviously the spin precession around the magnetic field and periodic shape-variation induced by the time varying field as well. In terms of the general soliton solutions N-soliton interaction and particularly various two-soliton collisions are analyzed. The inelastic collision by which we mean the soliton shape change before and after collision appears generally due to the time varying field. We, moreover, show that complete inelastic collisions can be achieved by adjusting spectrum and field parameters. This may lead a potential technique of shape control of soliton.

Soliton solution of continuum magnetization-equation in conducting ferromagnet with a spin-polarized current

Exact soliton solutions of a modified Landau-Lifshitz equation for the magnetization of conducting ferromagnet in the presence of a spin-polarized current are obtained by means of inverse scattering transformation. From the analytical solution effects of spin-current on the frequency, wave number, and dispersion law of spin wave are investigated. The one-soliton solution indicates obviously current-driven precession and periodic shape-variation as well. The inelastic collision of solitons by which we mean the shape change before and after collision appears due to the spin current. We, moreover, show that complete inelastic collisions can be achieved by adjusting spectrum and current parameters. This may lead to a potential technique for shape control of spin wave.

Dynamics of a Bright Soliton in Bose-Einstein condensates with Time-Dependent Atomic Scattering Length in an Expulsive Parabolic Potential

We present a family of exact solutions of one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which describe the dynamics of a bright soliton in Bose-Einstein condensates with the time-dependent interatomic interaction in an expulsive parabolic potential. Our results show that, under the safe range of parameters, the bright soliton can be compressed into very high local matter densities by increasing the absolute value of atomic scattering length, which can provide an experimental tool for investigating the range of validity of the one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We also find that the number of atoms in the bright soliton keeps dynamic stability: a time-periodic atomic exchange is formed between the bright soliton and the background.

Resolved Mid-Infrared Emission Around AB Aur and V892 Tau with Adaptive Optics Nulling Interferometric Observations

We present the results of adaptive optics nulling interferometric observations of two Herbig Ae stars, AB Aur and V892 Tau. Our observations at 10.3 microns show resolved circumstellar emission from both sources. Further analysis of the AB Aur emission suggests that there is an inclined disk surrounding the star. The diameter of the disk is derived to be 24 to 30 AU with an inclination of 45 to 65 degrees from face-on, and a major-axis PA of 30 +/- 15 degrees (E of N). Differences in the physical characteristics between the mid-IR emission and emission at other wavelengths (near-IR and millimeter), found in previous studies, suggest a complex structure for AB Aur's circumstellar environment, which may not be explained by a disk alone. The similarity in the observed size of AB Aur's resolved emission and that of another Herbig Ae star, HD 100546, is likely coincidental, as their respective evolutionary states and spectral energy distributions suggest significantly different circumstellar environments.

Semiclassical Time Evolution of the Holes from Luttinger Hamiltonian

We study the semi-classical motion of holes by exact numerical solution of the Luttinger model. The trajectories obtained for the heavy and light holes agree well with the higher order corrections to the abelian and the non-abelian adiabatic theories in Ref. [1] [S. Murakami et al., Science 301, 1378(2003)], respectively. It is found that the hole trajectories contain rapid oscillations reminiscent of the "Zitterbewegung" of relativistic electrons. We also comment on the non-conservation of helicity of the light holes.

Adaptive Optics Nulling Interferometric Constraints on the Mid-Infrared Exozodiacal Dust Emission around Vega

We present the results of mid-infrared nulling interferometric observations of the main-sequence star alpha Lyr (Vega) using the 6.5 m MMT with its adaptive secondary mirror. From the observations at 10.6 microns, we find that there is no resolved emission from the circumstellar environment (at separations greater than 0.8 AU) above 2.1% (3 sigma limit) of the level of the stellar photospheric emission. Thus, we are able to place an upper limit on the density of dust in the inner system of 650 times that of our own solar system's zodiacal cloud. This limit is roughly 2.8 times better than those determined with photometric excess observations such as those by IRAS. Comparison with far-infrared observations by IRAS shows that the density of warm dust in the inner system (< 30 AU) is significantly lower than cold dust at larger separations. We consider two scenarios for grain removal, the sublimation of ice grains and the presence of a planetary mass "sweeper." We find that if sublimation of ice grains is the only removal process, a large fraction (> 80%) of the material in the outer system is ice.

A Resolved Circumstellar Disk around the Herbig Ae Star HD 100546 in the Thermal Infrared

We present mid-infrared nulling interferometric and direct imaging observations of the Herbig Ae star HD 100546 obtained with the Magellan I (Baade) 6.5 m telescope. The observations show resolved circumstellar emission at 10.3, 11.7, 12.5, 18.0, and 24.5 microns. Through the nulling observations (10.3, 11.7 and 12.5 microns), we detect a circumstellar disk, with an inclination of 45 +- 15 degrees with respect to a face-on disk, a semimajor axis position angle of 150 +- 10 degrees (E of N), and a spatial extent of about 25 AU. The direct images (18.0 and 24.5 microns) show evidence for cooler dust with a spatial extent of 30-40 AU from the star. The direct images also show evidence for an inclined disk with a similar position angle as the disk detected by nulling. This morphology is consistent with models in which a flared circumstellar disk dominates the emission. However, the similarity in relative disk size we derive for different wavelengths suggests that the disk may have a large inner gap, possibly cleared out by the formation of a giant protoplanet. The existence of a protoplanet in the system also provides a natural explanation for the observed difference between HD 100546 and other Herbig Ae stars.
