Exact results on the Kondo-lattice magnetic polaron

In this work we revise the theory of one electron in a ferromagnetically saturated local moment system interacting via a Kondo-like exchange interaction. The complete eigenstates for the finite lattice are derived. It is then shown, that parts of these states lose their norm in the limit of an infinite lattice. The correct (scattering) eigenstates are calculated in this limit. The time-dependent Schrödinger equation is solved for arbitrary initial conditions and the connection to the down-electron Green's function and the scattering states is worked out. A detailed analysis of the down-electron decay dynamics is given.

Carrier mediated interlayer exchange, ground state phase diagrams and transition temperatures of magnetic thin films

We investigate the influence of the carrier density and other parameters on the interlayer exchange in magnetic thin film systems. The system consists of ferromagnetic and non-magnetic layers where the carriers are allowed to move from layer to layer. For the ferromagnetic layers we use the Kondo-lattice model to describe interactions between itinerant electrons and local moments. The electrons' properties are calculated by a Green's function's equation of motion approach while the magnetization of the local moments is determined by a minimization of the free energy. As results we present magnetic phase diagrams and the interlayer exchange over a broad parameter range. Additionally we can calculate the transition temperatures for different alignments of the ferromagnetic layers' magnetizations.

The ground state phase diagram of the diluted ferromagnetic Kondo-lattice model

We investigate the existence of several (anti-)ferromagnetic phases in the diluted ferromagnetic Kondo-lattice model, i.e. ferromagnetic coupling of local moment and electron spin. To do this we use a coherent potential approximation (CPA) with a dynamical alloy analogy. For the CPA we need effective potentials, which we get first from a mean-field approximation. To improve this treatment we use in the next step a more appropriate moment conserving decoupling approach and compare both methods. The different magnetic phases are modelled by defining two magnetic sublattices. As a result we present zero-temperature phase diagrams according to the important model parameters and different dilutions.

Curie temperatures of the concentrated and diluted Kondo-lattice model as a possible candidate to describe magnetic semiconductors and metals

We present a theory to model carrier mediated ferromagnetism in concentrated or diluted local moment systems. The electronic subsystem of the Kondo lattice model is described by a combined equation of motion / coherent potential approximation method. Doing this we can calculate the free energy of the system and its minimum according to the magnetization of the local moments. Thus also the Curie temperature can be determined and its dependence on important model parameters. We get qualitative agreement with the Curie temperatures' experimental values of Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$As for a proper hole density.

Interplay of magnetic order and Jahn-Teller distortion in a model with strongly correlated electron system

The Hubbard model has been employed successfully to understand many aspects of correlation driven physical properties, in particular, the magnetic order in itenerant electron systems. In some systems such as Heusler alloys, manganites etc., it is known that, in addition to magnetic order, distortion induced by Jahn-Teller(J-T) effect also exists. In this paper, based on two-fold degenerate Hubbard model, the influence of magnetic order on J-T distortion is investigated. The electron correlation is treated using a spectral density approach and J-T interaction is added to the model. We find that magnetic order and structural distortion coexist at low temperature $T$ for a certain range of electron correlation strength $U$, J-T coupling strength $G$ and band occupation $n$. At T=0, for a given $n$ and $U$, magnetic order is present but distortion appears only for a $G$ larger than a critical value. We also studied the temperature dependence of lattice strain and magnetization choosing a $G$ close to the critical value.

\textit{Additional} carrier-mediated ferromagnetism in GdN

The mechanism behind ferromagnetic exchange interaction in GdN is not well understood. It has been argued that it can be due to fourth order cross process of \textit{d-f} mixing and \textit{d-f} exchange. An alternative explanation suggests an anti- ferromagnetic interaction between Gd \textit{d} and N \textit{p} induced moments on the rock salt structure which aligns the nearest neighbor Gd \textit{f} moments ferromagnetically through the \textit{d-f} exchange. In this paper we present results of Curie temperature in GdN as a function of carrier density calculated within our multiband modified RKKY- like exchange interaction. It includes realistic bandstructure of the 5\textit{d} conduction band as an input for single particle energies. We analyze the possibility of carrier- mediated ferromagnetism in GdN and also demonstrate a simple phenomenological model which justifies the role of charge carriers.

Interacting spin waves in the ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model

We present an new approach for the ferromagnetic, three-dimensional, translational-symmetric Kondo lattice model which allows us to derive both magnon energies and linewidths (lifetimes) and to study the properties of the ferromagnetic phase at finite temperatures. Both "anomalous softening" and "anomalous damping" are obtained and discussed. Our method consists of mapping the Kondo lattice model onto an effective Heisenberg model by means of the "modified RKKY interaction" and the "interpolating self-energy approach". The Heisenberg model is approximatively solved by applying the Dyson-Maleev transformation and using the "spectral density approach" with a broadened magnon spectral density.

A microscopic model for current-induced switching of magnetization for half-metallic leads

We study the behaviour of the magnetization in a half-metallic ferromagnet/nonmagnetic insulator/ferromagnetic metal/paramagnetic metal (FM1/NI/FM2/PM) tunnel junction. It is calculated self-consistently within the nonequilibrium Keldysh formalism. The magnetic regions are treated as band ferromagnets and are described by the single-band Hubbard model. We developed a nonequilibrium spectral density approach to solve the Hubbard model approximately in the switching magnet. By applying a voltage to the junction it is possible to switch between antiparallel (AP) and parallel (P) alignment of the magnetizations of the two ferromagnets. The transition from AP to P occurs for positive voltages while the inverse transition from P to AP can be induced by negative voltages only. This behaviour is in agreement with the Slonczewski model of current-induced switching and appears self-consistently within the model, i.e. without using half-classical methods like the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation.

The ground state magnetic phase diagram of the ferromagnetic Kondo-lattice model

The magnetic ground state phase diagram of the ferromagnetic Kondo-lattice model is constructed by calculating internal energies of all possible bipartite magnetic configurations of the simple cubic lattice explicitly. This is done in one dimension (1D), 2D and 3D for a local moment of S = 3/2. By assuming saturation in the local moment system we are able to treat all appearing higher local correlation functions within an equation of motion approach exactly. A simple explanation for the obtained phase diagram in terms of bandwidth reduction is given. Regions of phase separation are determined from the internal energy curves by an explicit Maxwell construction.

Magnetic Phase Diagrams of Manganites-like Local-Moment Systems with Jahn-Teller distortions

We use an extended two-band Kondo lattice model (KLM) to investigate the occurrence of different (anti-)ferromagnetic phases or phase separation depending on several model parameters. With regard to CMR-materials like the manganites we have added a Jahn-Teller term, direct antiferromagnetic coupling and Coulomb interaction to the KLM. The electronic properties are self-consistently calculated in an interpolating self-energy approach with no restriction to classical spins and going beyond mean-field treatments. Further on we do not have to limit the Hund's coupling to low or infinite values. Zero-temperature phase diagrams are presented for large parameter intervals. There are strong influences of the type of Coulomb interaction (intraband, interband) and of the important parameters (Hund's coupling, direct antiferromagnetic exchange, Jahn-Teller distortion), especially at intermediate couplings.

Ferromagnetism in multi-band Kondo lattice model

The ferromagnetic spin exchange interaction between the itinerant electrons and localized moments on a periodic lattice, studied within the so-called Kondo lattice model (KLM), is considered for multiband situation where the hopping integral is a matrix, in general. The modified RKKY theory, wherein one can map such a model onto an effective Heisenberg-like system, is extended to a multi-band case with finite bandwidth and hybridization on a simple cubic lattice. As an input for the evaluation of the effective exchange integrals, one requires the multi-band electronic self energy which is taken from an earlier proposed ansatz. Using the above procedure, we determine the magnetic properties of the system like Curie temperature while calculating the chemical potential and magnetization within a self consistent scheme for various values of system parameters. The results are discussed in detail and the model is motivated in order to study the electronic, transport and magnetic properties of real materials like GdN.

Disordered Correlated Kondo-lattice model

We propose a self-consistent approximate solution of the disordered Kondo-lattice model (KLM) to get the interconnected electronic and magnetic properties of 'local-moment' systems like diluted ferromagnetic semiconductors. Aiming at $(A_{1-x}M_x)$ compounds, where magnetic (M) and non-magnetic (A) atoms distributed randomly over a crystal lattice, we present a theory which treats the subsystems of itinerant charge carriers and localized magnetic moments in a homologous manner. The coupling between the localized moments due to the itinerant electrons (holes) is treated by a modified RKKY-theory which maps the KLM onto an effective Heisenberg model. The exchange integrals turn out to be functionals of the electronic selfenergy guaranteeing selfconsistency of our theory. The disordered electronic and magnetic moment systems are both treated by CPA-type methods. We discuss in detail the dependencies of the key-terms such as the long range and oscillating effectice exchange integrals, 'the local-moment' magnetization, the electron spin polarization, the Curie temperature as well as the electronic and magnonic quasiparticle densities of states on the concentration $x$ of magnetic ions, the carrier concentration $n$, the exchange coupling $J$, and the temperature. The shape and the effective range of the exchange integrals turn out to be strongly $x$-dependent. The disorder causes anomalies in the spin spectrum especially in the low-dilution regime, which are not observed in the mean field approximation.

Spin-polarized tunneling currents through a ferromagnetic insulator between two metallic or superconducting leads

Using the Keldysh formalism the tunneling current through a hybrid structure where a confined magnetic insulator (I) is sandwiched between two non-magnetic leads is calculated. The leads can be either normal metals (M) or superconductors (S). Each region is modelled as a single band in tight-binding approximation in order to understand the formation of the tunneling current as clearly as possible. The tunneling process itself is simulated by a hybridization between the lead and insulator conduction bands. The insulator is assumed to have localized moments which can interact with the tunneling electrons. This is described by the Kondo Lattice Model (KLM) and treated within an interpolating self-energy approach. For the superconductor the mean-field BCS theory is used. The spin polarization of the current shows a strong dependence both on the applied voltage and the properties of the materials. Even for this idealized three band model there is a qualitative agreement with experiment.

Green function theory versus Quantum Monte Carlo calculations for thin magnetic films

In this work we compare numerically exact Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations and Green function theory (GFT) calculations of thin ferromagnetic films including second order anisotropies. Thereby we concentrate on easy plane systems, i.e. systems for which the anisotropy favors a magnetization parallel to the film plane. We discuss these systems in perpendicular external field, i.e. B parallel to the film normal. GFT results are in good agreement with QMC for high enough fields and temperatures. Below a critical field or a critical temperature no collinear stable magnetization exists in GFT. On the other hand QMC gives finite magnetization even below those critical values. This indicates that there occurs a transition from non-collinear to collinear configurations with increasing field or temperature. For slightly tilted external fields a rotation of magnetization from out-of-plane to in-plane orientation is found with decreasing temperature.

Spin wave excitations: The main source of the temperature dependence of Interlayer exchange coupling in nanostructures

Quantum mechanical calculations based on an extended Heisenberg model are compared with ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) experiments on prototype trilayer systems Ni_7/Cu_n/Co_2/Cu(001) in order to determine and separate for the first time quantitatively the sources of the temperature dependence of interlayer exchange coupling. Magnon excitations are responsible for about 75% of the reduction of the coupling strength from zero to room temperature. The remaining 25% are due to temperature effects in the effective quantum well and the spacer/magnet interfaces.

A new type of temperature driven reorientation transition in magnetic thin films

We present a new type of temperature driven spin reorientation transition (SRT) in thin films. It can occur when the lattice and the shape anisotropy favor different easy directions of the magnetization. Due to different temperature dependencies of the two contributions the effective anisotropy may change its sign and thus the direction of the magnetization as a function of temperature may change. Contrary to the well-known reorientation transition caused by competing surface and bulk anisotropy contributions the reorientation that we discuss is also found in film systems with a uniform lattice anisotropy. The results of our theoretical model study may have experimental relevance for film systems with positive lattice anisotropy, as e.g. thin iron films grown on copper.

Model of the Interplay of Band J-T Effect with Magnetic Order Mediated by Exchange Interaction

A model calculation is presented with the aim to study the interplay between magnetic and structural transitions. The model consists of an orbitally doubly degenerate conduction band and a periodic array of local moments. The band electrons interact with the local spins via the s-f interaction. The interaction of the band electrons with phonons is introduced by including band Jahn-Teller (J-T) interaction. The model Hamiltonian, including the above terms, is solved for the single particle Greens function. In doing this an ansatz for selfenergy of electrons, which was developed earlier has been utilized. The quasiparticle density of states (QDOS) and hence the orbital populations are calculated treating the ferromagnetism of local moments in the mean field approximation. The critical value of electron-phonon interaction ($G$) for the appearance of the band J-T distortion is higher in the ferromagnetic state. The strain appears at a critical temperature ($T_s$) when $G$ is greater than the critical value. The onset of ferromagnetism at $T_C$ ($<T_s$) arrests the growth of the strain. It is concluded that the magnetization hinders the structural transition. The quasiparticle density of states are presented to interpret these results.
