Temperature dependent electronic correlation effects in GdN

We investigate temperature dependent electronic correlation effects in the conduction bands of Gadolinium Nitride (GdN) based on the combination of many body analysis of the multi-band Kondo lattice model and the first principles TB-LMTO bandstructure calculations. The physical properties like the quasi-particle density of states (Q-DOS), spectral density (SD) and quasi-particle bandstructure (Q-BS) are calculated and discussed. The results can be compared with spin and angle resolved inverse photoemission spectroscopy (ARIPS) of the conduction bands of GdN. A redshift of 0.34 eV of the lower band edge (T=$T_{c}$ $\to$ T=0) is obtained and found in close comparison with earlier theoretical prediction and experimental value reported in the literature.

Magnetic phase diagram of the Kondo lattice model with quantum localized spins

The magnetic phase diagram of the ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model is determined at T=0 in 1D, 2D, and 3D for various magnitudes of the quantum mechanical localized spins ranging from S=1/2 to classical spins. We consider the ferromagnetic phase, the paramagnetic phase, and the ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic phase separated regime. There is no significant influence of the spin quantum number on the phase boundaries except for the case S=1/2, where the model exhibits an instability of the ferromagnetic phase with respect to spin disorder. Our results give support, at least as far as the low temperature magnetic properties are concerned, to the classical treatment of the S=3/2-spins in the intensively investigated manganites, for which the ferromagnetic Kondo-lattice model is generally employed to account for magnetism.

Correlation effects in the valence bands of ferromagnetic semiconductor EuS

We present a many body analysis of the multi-band Kondo lattice model. The study is then combined with the first principles TB-LMTO band structure calculations, in order to investigate the temperature dependent correlation effects in the 3$\textit{p}$ valence bands of the ferromagnetic semiconductor EuS. Some of the physical properties of interest like the quasi-particle density of states (Q-DOS), spectral density (SD) and quasi-particle band structure (Q-BS) are calculated and discussed. Therewith, we propose a spin resolved ARPES of the valence bands of EuS to be performed.

Magnetic properties of a disordered Heisenberg binary spin system with long-range exchange

The influence of substitutional disorder on the magnetic properties of disordered Heisenberg binary spin systems with long-range exchange integrals is studied. The equation of motion for the magnon Green's function which is decoupled by the Tyablikov approximation is solved in the Blackman-Esterling-Berk(BEB) coherent potential approximation(CPA) framework, where the environmental disorder term is treated by virtual crystal approximation. The long-range exchange integrals include a power-law decaying and an oscillating Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida(RKKY) exchange interaction. The resulting spectral density, which is calculated by CPA self-consistent equation, is then used to estimate the magnetization and Curie temperature. The results show, in the case of the three-dimensional simple cubic systems, a strong influence of ferromagnetic long-range exchange integrals on the magnetization and Curie temperature of the systems, which is obviously different from the calculation of short-range interaction.

Electronic properties of EuB6 in the ferromagnetic regime: Half-metal versus semiconductor

To understand the halfmetallic ferromagnet EuB6 we use the Kondo lattice model for valence and conduction band. By means of a recently developed many-body theory we calculate the electronic properties in the ferromagnetic regime up to the Curie temperature. The decreasing magnetic order induces a transition from halfmetallic to semiconducting behavior along with a band broadening. We show the temperature dependence of the quasiparticle density of states and the quasiparticle dispersion as well as the effective mass, the number of carriers and the plasma frequency which are in good agreement with the experimental data.

The temperature dependence of interlayer exchange coupling - spin waves vs. spacer effects

There are different mechanisms proposed to be responsible for the temperature dependence of the interlayer exchange coupling (IEC), namely a smearing out of the spacer or interface Fermi surface and excitations and interactions of spin waves. We propose a possibility to separate both effects by calculating the excitation spectrum of an extended Heisenberg model and connecting the results with ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) experiments. To solve the Heisenberg model we use an approximation that was shown to yield excellent results. In this paper the main idea of this procedure is explained and a detailed investigation of the spin wave contribution to the temperature dependence of FMR resonance frequencies and fields is carried out.

Magnetism in (III, Mn)-V Diluted Magnetic Semiconductors: Effective Heisenberg Model

The magnetic properties of the diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS) (Ga, Mn)As and (Ga, Mn)N are investigated by means of an effective Heisenberg model, whose exchange parameters are obtained from first-principle calculations. The finite-temperature properties of the model are studied numerically using a method based upon the Tyablikov approximation. The method properly incorporates the effects of positional disorder present in DMS. The resulting Curie temperatures for (Ga, Mn)As are in excellent agreement with experimental data. Due to percolation effects and noncollinear magnetic structures at higher Mn concentrations, our calculations predict for (Ga, Mn)N very low Curie temperatures compared to mean-field estimates.

Theory of field induced spin reorientation transition in thin Heisenberg films

We consider the spin reorientation transition in a ferromagnetic Heisenberg monolayer with a second order single ion anisotropy as a function of temperature and external field. Up to now analytical methods give satisfying results only for the special case that the external field is aligned parallel to the easy axis of the crystal. We propose a theory based on a generalization of the Callen decoupling, which can be used for arbritrary direction of the external field. Excellent agreement between our results and Quantum Monte Carlo data is found for the field induced reorientation at finite temperatures. Additionally, we discuss the temperature dependence of the transition in detail.

Disorder in Diluted Spin Systems

The influence of substitutional disorder on the magnetic properties of diluted Heisenberg spin systems is studied with regard to the magnetic stability of ferromagnetic diluted semiconductors (DMS). The equation of motion for the magnon Green's function within Tyablikov approximation is solved numerically for finite systems. The resulting spectral density is then used to estimate the magnetization and Curie temperature of an infinite system. This method is suitable for any form of a ferromagnetic exchange interaction. Besides different lattices and spin magnitude $S$, exchange interactions of different range are examined. The results show that, for short-range interaction, no magnetic order exists below the critical percolation concentration, whereas a linear dependence of the Curie temperature on the concentration of spins is found for ferromagnetic long-range interaction.

Carrier induced ferromagnetism in concentrated and diluted local-moment systems

For modeling the magnetic properties of concentrated and diluted magnetic semiconductors, we use the Kondo-lattice model. The magnetic phase diagram is derived by inspecting the static susceptibility of itinerant band electrons, which are exchange coupled to localized magnetic moments. It turns out that rather low band occupations favour a ferromagnetic ordering of the local moment systems due to an indirect coupling mediated by a spin polarization of the itinerant charge carriers. The disorder in diluted systems is treated by adding a CPA-type concept to the theory. For almost all moment concentrations x, ferromagnetism is possible, however, only for carrier concentrations n distinctly smaller than x. The charge carrier compensation in real magnetic semiconductors (in Ga_{1-x}Mn_{x}As by e.g. antisites) seems to be a necessary condition for getting carrier induced ferromagnetism.

On the origin of temperature dependence of interlayer exchange coupling in metallic trilayers

We study the influence of collective magnetic excitations on the interlayer exchange coupling (IEC) in metallic multilayers. The results are compared to other models that explain the temperature dependence of the IEC by mechanisms within the spacer or at the interfaces of the multilayers. As a main result we find that the reduction of the IEC with temperature shows practically the same functional dendence in all models. On the other hand the influence of the spacer thickness, the magnetic material, and an external field are quite different. Based on these considerations we propose experiments, that are able to determine the dominating mechanism that reduces the IEC at finite temperatures.

Ferromagnetism and temperature-dependent Electronic Structure of hcp Gadolinium

We use a combination of a many-body model analysis with an ab initio band structure calculation to derive the temperature dependent electronic quasiparticle structure of the rare-earth metal Gadolinium. As a local-moment system Gd is properly represented by the ferromagnetic (multiband) Kondo-lattice model (s-f (d-f) model). The single-particle part of the model-Hamiltonian is taken from an augmented spherical wave (ASW) band calculation. The proposed method avoids the double counting of relevant interactions by exploiting an exact limiting case of the model and takes into account the correct symmetry of atomic orbitals. The a priori only weakly correlated 5d conduction bands get via interband exchange coupling to the localized 4f levels a distinct temperature dependence which explains by a Rudermann-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) -type mechanism the ferromagnetism of Gd. We get a self-consistently derived Curie temperature of 294.1 K and a T=0-moment of 7.71 $μ_{\rm B}$, surprisingly close to the experimental values. The striking induced temperature-dependence of the 5d conduction bands explains respective photoemission data. The only parameter of the theory (interband exchange coupling J) is uniquely fixed by the band calculation.

Proper weak-coupling approach to the periodic s-d(f) exchange model

The periodic s-d(f) exchange model is characterized by a wide variety of interesting applications, a simple mathematical structure and a limited number of reliable approximations which take care of the quantum nature of the participating spins. We suggest the use of a projection-operator method for getting information perturbationally, which are not accessible via diagrammatic approaches. In this paper we present in particular results beyond perturbation theory, which are obtained such that almost all exactly known limiting cases are incorporated correctly. We discuss a variety of possible methods and evaluate their consequences for one-particle properties. These considerations serve as a guideline for a more effective approach to the model.

On details of the thermodynamical derivation of the Ginsburg--Landau equations

We examine the procedure of thermodynamical derivation of the Ginsburg--Landau equation for current, which is given unclear and contradictory interpretations in existing textbooks. We clarify all steps of this procedure and find as a consequence a limitation on the validity range of the thermodynamic Ginsburg--Landau theory, which does not seem to be explicitely stated up to now: we conclude that the thermodynamic theory is applicable only to a superconducting specimen that is not a part of an external current-carrying loop.

Metal-insulator transition in EuO

It is shown that the spectacular metal-insulator transition in Eu-rich EuO can be simulated within an extended Kondo lattice model. The different orders of magnitude of the jump in resistivity in dependence on the concentration of oxygen vacancies as well as the low-temperature resistance minimum in high-resistivity samples are reproduced quantitatively. The huge colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) is calculated and discussed.

The Correlated Kondo-lattice Model

We investigate the ferromagnetic Kondo-lattice model (FKLM) with a correlated conduction band. A moment conserving approach is proposed to determine the electronic self-energy. Mapping the interaction onto an effective Heisenberg model we calculate the ordering of the localized spin system self-consistently. Quasiparticle densities of states (QDOS) and the Curie temperature are calculated. The band interaction leads to an upper Hubbard peak and modifies the magnetic stability of the FKLM.

Ferromagnetic Kondo-Lattice Model

We present a many-body approach to the electronic and magnetic properties of the (multiband) Kondo-lattice model with ferromagnetic interband exchange. The coupling between itinerant conduction electrons and localized magnetic moments leads, on the one hand, to a distinct temperature-dependence of the electronic quasiparticle spectrum and, on the other hand, to magnetic properties, as e.~g.the Curie temperature T_C or the magnon dispersion, which are strongly influenced by the band electron selfenergy and therewith in particular by the carrier density. We present results for the single-band Kondo-lattice model in terms of quasiparticle densities of states and quasiparticle band structures and demonstrate the density-dependence of the self-consistently derived Curie temperature. The transition from weak-coupling (RKKY) to strong-coupling (double exchange) behaviour is worked out. The multiband model is combined with a tight-binding-LMTO bandstructure calculation to describe real magnetic materials. As an example we present results for the archetypal ferromagnetic local-moment systems EuO and EuS. The proposed method avoids the double counting of relevant interactions and takes into account the correct symmetry of atomic orbitals.

Correlation and surface effects in Vanadium Oxides

Recent photoemission experiments have shown strong surface modifications in the spectra from vanadium oxides as (V,Cr)_2O_3 or (Sr,Ca)VO_3. The effective mass is enhanced at the surface and the coherent part of the surface spectrum is narrowed as compared to the bulk. The quasiparticle weight is more sensitive at the surface than in the bulk against bandwidth variations. We investigate these effects theoretically considering the single-band Hubbard model for a film geometry. A simplified dynamical mean-field scheme is used to calculate the main features of the interacting layer-dependent spectral function. It turns out that the experimentally confirmed effects are inherent properties of a system of strongly correlated electrons. The reduction of the weight and the variance of the coherent part of the surface spectrum can be traced back to the reduced surface coordination number. Surface correlation effects can be strongly amplified by changes of the hopping integrals at the surface.
