Exact solution for the two-site Kondo-Lattice Model - a limiting case for an insulator

The Kondo-lattice model is well established as a method to describe an exchange coupling between single conduction electrons and localized magnetic moments. As a nontrivial exact result the zero-bandwidth limit (atomic limit) can be used to test approximations for this model. As soon as the translational symmetry is broken (for instance by sublattice structures) it is necessary to consider more than one lattice site. Therefore, we study as a starting point for generalizations the situation of a two-site cluster. An equation-of-motion approach is chosen to obtain the one-particle Green's function. In order to determine the spectral weights of its energy poles, we derive different possibilities for the calculation of the involved correlation functions. In this paper the analytical exact result for the situation of an insulator is presented. In a forthcoming article we generalize the calculations to arbitrary electron densities, keeping as the only constraint S=1/2.

Exact solution for the two-site correlated Kondo-Lattice Model - a limiting case for a metal

The correlated Kondo-lattice model is used to describe the interaction of electrons in a single conduction band with localized magnetic moments as well as their mutual repulsion. It is our intension to provide an analytical exact result for this model by considering a two-site cluster. An equation-of-motion approach as well as the spectral theorem is chosen to obtain the complete expression for the one-particle Green's function. In a forgoing article the problem has been solved for an insulator, the present paper is devoted to the technical more demanding task of a metal.

Self-energy approach to the correlated Kondo-lattice model

We develop an interpolating self-energy approach to the correlated Kondo-lattice model. The correlation of the band electrons is taken into account by a Hubbard interaction. The method is based on a self-energy ansatz, the structure of which allows to fulfill a maximum number of exactly solvable limiting cases. The parameters of the ansatz are fitted to spectral moments via high-energy expansion of the self-energy. The band electron correlations are taken into account by an effective medium approach being correct in the strong coupling (U) regime. The theory is considered reliable for all temperatures, band occupations, and exchange couplings. Results are presented for the respective dependencies of spectral densities, quasiparticle densities of states, and characteristic correlation functions, and interpreted in terms of elementary spin exchange processes between itinerant conduction electrons and localized magnetic moments. The appearance of magnetic polarons, the typical quasiparticle of Kondo-lattices, in the energy spectrum is worked out. Spin exchange processes prevent a total spin polarization of the band electrons even for arbitrarily strong exchange couplings as long as the local moments are represented by quantum mechanical spins.

Local Density of States in the Antiferromagnetic and Ferromagnetic Kondo Models

Based on a simple approximation scheme we have computed the local density of states (LDOS) of the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic Kondo models for the full range of band occupations and coupling strengths. For both models the LDOS with its full energy dependence has not been calculated before. Arguments are given for the results to be qualitatively trustworthy despite the simplicity of the approximation scheme.

Hubbard Hamiltonian in the dimer representation. Large U limit

We formulate the Hubbard model for the simple cubic lattice in the representation of interacting dimers applying the exact solution of the dimer problem. By eliminating from the considerations unoccupied dimer energy levels in the large U limit (it is the only assumption) we analytically derive the Hubbard Hamiltonian for the dimer (analogous to the well-known t-J model), as well as, the Hubbard Hamiltonian for the crystal as a whole by means of the projection technique. Using this approach we can better visualize the complexity of the model, so deeply hidden in its original form. The resulting Hamiltonian is a mixture of many multiple ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic and more exotic interactions competing one with another. The interplay between different competitive interactions has a decisive influence on the resulting thermodynamic properties of the model, depending on temperature, model parameters and assumed average number of electrons per lattice site. A simplified form of the derived Hamiltonian can be obtained using additionally Taylor expansion with respect to $x=\frac{t}{U}$ (t-hopping integral between nearest neighbours, U-Coulomb repulsion). As an example, we present the expansion including all terms proportional to t and to $\frac{t^2}U$ and we reproduce the exact form of the Hubbard Hamiltonian in the limit $U\to \infty $. The nonperturbative approach, presented in this paper, can, in principle, be applied to clusters of any size, as well as, to another types of model Hamiltonians.

Temperature-dependent quasiparticle band structure of the ferromagnetic semiconductor EuS

We present calculations for the temperature-dependent electronic structure of the ferromagnetic semiconductor EuS. A combination of a many-body evaluation of a multiband Kondo-lattice model and a first-principles T=0--bandstructure calculation (tight-binding linear muffin-tin orbital (TB-LMTO)) is used to get realistic information about temperature- and correlation effects in the EuS energy spectrum. The combined method strictly avoids double-counting of any relevant interaction. Results for EuS are presented in terms of spectral densities, quasiparticle band structures and quasiparticle densities of states, and that over the entire temperature range.

Exact Mapping of Periodic Anderson Model to Kondo Lattice Model

It is shown that the Kondo lattice model, for any finite coupling constant J, can be obtained exactly from the periodic Anderson model in an appropriate limit. The mapping allows a direct proof of the 'large' Fermi volume for a nonmagnetic Fermi-liquid state of the Kondo lattice model.

Long range superexchange - an exchange interaction through empty bands

We derive a generalization of the RKKY interaction to semiconductors using perturbation theory on a non-degenerated two-impurity Anderson model. In metals the interaction is mediated by excitations of free carriers over the Fermi-energy. In semiconductors, where no carriers are present, the only possible excitations are those of the localized impurity electrons (or holes) themselves. Thus a possible interaction is closely related to superexchange. We find an oscillating anti-ferromagnetic spin-spin coupling due to impurity electron (hole) excitations. By treating the coupling through empty bands (superexchange) along the same route as carrier mediated interactions (RKKY) it is easy to compare these two kinds of spin-spin coupling. The interaction derived here is of special interest for diluted magnetic semiconductors.

Ferromagnetism in the Kondo-lattice model

We propose a modified RKKY-technique to evaluate the magnetic properties of the ferromagnetic Kondo-lattice model. Together with a previously developed selfenergy approach to the conduction electron part of the model we get a closed system of equations which can be solved self-consistently. Ferromagnetism appears for relatively low electron (hole) densities, while it is excluded around half-filling ($n=1$). For small $J$ conventional RKKY ($\sim J^2$) is reproduced; however, with strong deviations already for very moderate exchange couplings. For not too small $n$ a critical $J_c$ is needed to produce ferromagnetism with a finite Curie temperature $T_{\textrm{C}}$, which increases with $J$, then running into a kind of saturation, in order to fall off again and disappearing above an upper critical exchange $J$.

Temperature-dependent electronic structure and magnetic stability of thin ferromagnetic films

We study correlation effects and temperature dependencies in the electronic structure of thin ferromagnetic local-moment films. In a first step the Kondo-lattice model is investigated as a candidate for a proper representation of local-moment ferromagnets. Magnetic and electronic key-quantities as the Curie-temperature and the quasiparticle density of states are derived with previously tested many-body procedures. It is shown that the magnetic properties can be interpreted exclusively in terms of the temperature-dependent electronic quasiparticle structure. An extended RKKY theory leads to effective Heisenberg exchange integrals, which turn out to be functionals of the conduction electron selfenergy, getting therewith a remarkable temperature and band occupation dependence. In a second step the model studies are combined with tight binding-LMTO bandstructure calculations in order to get for real ferromagnetic films quasiparticle densities of states and quasiparticle bandstructures. The proposed method avoids the double-counting of relevant interactions and takes into account the correct symmetry of the atomic orbitals. Special results are given for thin ferromagnetic EuO (100) films. The Curie temperature $T_{\textrm{C}}$ of the EuO film turns out to be strongly thickness-dependent, starting from a very low value ($\simeq 15K$) for the monolayer and reaching the bulk value at about 30 layers. For a 20-layer film we predict the existence of a surface state, the temperature-behaviour of which can lead to a surface halfmetal-insulator transition.

Interlayer Exchange Coupling in M/N/M Multilayer

The interlayer exchange coupling (IEC) of two local moment ferromagnetic layers separated by a non-magnetic spacer layer (M/N/M multilayer) is studied using the modified RKKY method along with the s-f model. The IEC exhibits oscillatory behaviour with respect to the spacer layer thickness and it oscillates between ferro- and antiferromagnetic configurations. The conventional RKKY method is also used to obtain the IEC and the results are compared with those obtained from the modified RKKY method which incorporates the electron correlation effects. We find significant correlation effects on the IEC and in fact the correlations alter the nature and magnitude of the magnetic coupling.

Ferromagnetism in the Hubbard model

We investigate the possibility and stability of bandferromagnetism in the single-band Hubbard model. This model poses a highly non-trivial many-body problem the general solution of which has not been found up to now. Approximations are still unavoidable. Starting from a simple two-pole ansatz for the spectral density our approach is systematically improved by focusing on the influence of quasiparticle damping and the correct weak-and strong coupling behaviour. The compatibility of the different aproximative steps with decisive moment sum rules is analysed and the importance of a spin-dependent band shift mediated by higher correlation functions is worked out. Results are presented in terms of temperature- and band occupation-dependent quasiparticle densities of states and band structures as well as spontaneous magnetisations, susceptibilities and Curie temperatures for varying electron densities and coupling strengths. Comparison is made to numerically essentially exact Quantum Monte Carlo calculations recently done by other authors using dynamical mean field theory for infinite-dimensional lattices. The main conclusion will be that the Hubbard model provides a qualitatively correct description of bandferromagnetism if quasiparticle damping and selfconsistent spin-dependent bandshifts are properly taken into account.

Low density approach to the Kondo-lattice model

We propose a new approach to the (ferromagnetic) Kondo-lattice model in the low density region, where the model is thought to give a reasonable frame work for manganites with perovskite structure exhibiting the "colossal magnetoresistance" -effect. Results for the temperature- dependent quasiparticle density of states are presented. Typical features can be interpreted in terms of elementary spin-exchange processes between itinerant conduction electrons and localized moments. The approach is exact in the zero bandwidth limit for all temperatures and at T=0 for arbitrary bandwidths, fulfills exact high-energy expansions and reproduces correctly second order perturbation theory in the exchange coupling.

Stabilization of d-Band Ferromagnetism by Hybridization with Uncorrelated Bands

We investigate the influence of s-d or p-d hybridization to d-band ferromagnetism to estimate the importance of hybridization for the magnetic properties of transition metals. To focus our attention to the interplay between hybridization and correlation we investigate a simple model system consisting of two non-degenerated hybridized bands, one strongly correlated, the other one quasi-free. To solve this extended Hubbard model, we apply simple approximations, namely SDA and MAA, that, concerning ferromagnetism in the single-band model, are known to give qualitatively satisfactory results. This approach allows us to discuss the underlying mechanism, by which d-band ferromagnetism is influenced by the hybridization on the basis of analytical expressions. The latter clearly display the order and the functional dependencies of the important effects. It is found, that spin-dependent inter-band particle fluctuations cause a spin-dependent band shift and a spin-dependent band broadening of the Hubbard bands. The shift stabilizes, the broadening tends to destabilize ferromagnetism. Stabilization requires relatively high band distances and small hybridization matrix elements. Super-exchange and RKKY coupling are of minor importance.

Kondo-lattice model: Application to the temperature-dependent electronic structure of EuO(100) films

We present calculations for the temperature-dependent electronic structure and magnetic properties of thin ferromagnetic EuO films. The treatment is based on a combination of a multiband-Kondo lattice model with first-principles TB-LMTO band structure calculations. The method avoids the problem of double-counting of relevant interactions and takes into account the correct symmetry of the atomic orbitals. We discuss the temperature-dependent electronic structures of EuO(100) films in terms of quasiparticle densities of states and quasiparticle band structures. The Curie temperature T_C of the EuO films turns out to be strongly thickness-dependent, starting from a very low value = 15K for the monolayer and reaching the bulk value at about 25 layers.

Strong-coupling scenario of a metamagnetic transition

We investigate the periodic Anderson model in the presence of an external magnetic field, using dynamical mean-field theory in combination with the modified perturbation theory. A metamagnetic transition is observed which exhibits a massive change in the electronic properties. These are discussed in terms of the quasiparticle weight and densities of states. The results are compared with the experimental results of the metamagnetic transition in CeRu_2Si_2.

Temperature-dependent bandstructure of bulk EuO

We present calculations for the temperature-dependent electronic structure of bulk ferromagnetic EuO based on a parametrization of the d-f model Hamiltonian using results of first-principles TB-LMTO band structure calculations. The presented method avoids the problem of double-counting of relevant interactions and takes into account the symmetry of the atomic orbitals. It enables us to determine the temperature-dependent band structure of EuO over the entire temperature range.
