Effect of electric/magnetic field on pinned/biased moments at the interfaces of magnetic superlattices

We have observed the pinned/biased moments in the superlattices consisting of ferromagnetic (FM) SrRuO3 (SRO) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) SrMnO3 (SMO)bilayer. The alternate stacking of SRO and SMO leading to a low field positive magnetoresistance with enhanced hysteretic field dependent magnetoresistance under the application of the out-of-plane magnetic field. We attribute these effects to the observed biased/pinned magnetic moments in the SRO layer in the vicinity of the interfaces. In addition, the biased/pinned moments can be oriented under the application of either the out-of-plane magnetic field or a combination of out-of-plane magnetic field and in-plane electric field. These results will bring new insights in the understanding of the coupling at the AFM/FM interface which can be useful for creating new exotic phenomena at the interfaces of the multilayer.

Effect of strain on the electrical transport and magnetization of the epitaxial Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3/La0.5Ca0.5MnO3/ Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 trilayer structures

Epitaxial trilayer structures consisting of two antifferomagnetic charge/orbital order insulators Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 (PCMO) and La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 (LCMO) are grown on (001)-oriented SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 substrates. In this trilayer series, a thin film of LCMO with various thicknesses is sandwiched between the two fixed thicknesses of PCMO. These samples show a Curie temperature with a hysteretic field dependent magnetization at 10 K, although the individual compounds are antiferromagnetic. The zero field electronic transport of all samples on LAO shows thermally activated behavior, while the thermally activated behavior is suppressed and a metal-like transport is appearing for the samples on STO as the LCMO layer thickness increases above 10 unit cell. We have discussed these magnetic and transport properties of the trilayer structures on STO and LAO by the interfacial effect due to the stabilized CO state and the vibration mode of Jahn-Teller distortion.

Direct observation of pinned/biased moments in magnetic superlattices

We report the \QTR{it}{pinned/biased} \QTR{it}{moment} in the superlattices consisting of ferromagnetic (FM) SrRuO$_3$ and antiferromgnetic (AFM) SrMnO$_3$. This superlattice system shows anisotropy and oriented pinning/biasing in the field-cooled (FC) hysteresis loop. The in-plane cooling-field provides antiferromagnetic orientations while out-of-plane cooling-field provides ferromagnetic orientations to the pinned/biased moments. The spacer layer thickness, strength and orientation of magnetic field, cooling field, and driving current influence the pinning strength. We propose that the magnetic structure is a repetition of $AFM/Pin/FM$($Free$)/$Pin$ unit below a critical field to explain its magnetic and transport properties. The transport behavior is discussed using the spin-dependent conduction.

Ferromagnetism and metal-like transport in antiferromagnetic insulator heterostructures

Strained Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$/La$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$/Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO $_3$ trilayers were grown on (001)-SrTiO$_3$ substrates using the pulsed-laser deposition technique. The coupling at the interfaces of several trilayers has been investigated from magnetization and electronic transport experiments. An increase of La$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ layer thickness induces a magnetic ordering in the strain layers and at the interfaces leading to ferromagnetic behavior and enhanced coercivity, while resistivity shows metal-like behaviors. These effects are not observed in the parent compounds, which are antiferromagnetic insulators, opening a path, to induce artificially some novel properties.

Magnetocapacitance effect in perovskite-superlattice based multiferroics

We report the structural and magnetoelectrical properties of La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$/BaTiO$_3$ perovskite superlattices grown on (001)-oriented SrTiO$_3$ by the pulsed laser deposition technique. Magnetic hysteresis loops together with temperature dependent magnetic properties exhibit well-defined coercivity and magnetic transition temperature (T$_C$) \symbol{126}140 K. $DC$ electrical studies of films show that the magnetoresistance (MR) is dependent on the BaTiO$_3$ thickness and negative $MR$ as high as 30% at 100K are observed. The $AC$ electrical studies reveal that the impedance and capacitance in these films vary with the applied magnetic field due to the magnetoelectrical coupling in these structures - a key feature of multiferroics. A negative magnetocapacitance value in the film as high as 3% per tesla at 1kHz and 100K is demonstrated, opening the route for designing novel functional materials.

Anisotropic pinned/biased magnetization in $SrRuO_3/SrMnO_3$ superlattices

The exchange coupling at the interfaces of magnetic superlattices consisting of ferromagnetic $SrRuO_3$ and antiferromagnetic $SrMnO_3$ grown on (001) oriented $SrTiO_3$ is studied with in-plane and out-of-plane orientations, with respect to the substrate plane, of the cooling magnetic field. The magnetization of the in-plane, field cooled hysteresis loop is lower than the corresponding in-plane zero-field-cooled hysteresis loop. The out-of-plane field cooled hysteresis loop is shifted, from the origin, along the graphical magnetization axis. We attribute this irreversible rotation of the moment to the pinning/biasing of spin in the $SrRuO_3$ layer in the vicinity of interfaces by the antiferromagnetic $SrMnO_3$ layer.

The role of ferroelectric-ferromagnetic layers on the properties of superlattice-based multiferroics

A series of superlattices and trilayers composed of ferromagnetic and ferroelectric or paraelectric layers were grown on (100) SrTiO3 by the pulsed laser deposition technique. Their structural and magneto-electric properties were examined. The superlattices made of ferromagnetic Pr0.85Ca0.15MnO3 (PCMO) and a ferroelectric, namely Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 (BST) or BaTiO3, showed enhanced magnetoresistance (MR) at high applied magnetic field, whereas such enhancement was absent in Pr0.85Ca0.15MnO3/SrTiO3 superlattices, which clearly demonstrates the preponderant role of the ferroelectric layers in this enhanced MR. Furthermore, the absence of enhanced MR in trilayers of PCMO/BST indicates that the magneto-electric coupling which is responsible for MR in these systems is stronger in multilayers than in their trilayer counterparts.

Exchange coupling induced antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic transition in $Pr_{0.5}Ca_{0.5}MnO_3/La_{0.5}Ca_{0.5}MnO_3$ superlattices

Superlattices built from two antiferromagnetic (AFM) charge/orbital order compounds, $Pr_{0.5}Ca_{0.5}MnO_3$ and $La_{0.5}Ca_{0.5}MnO_3$, have been studied as the thickness of $La_{0.5}Ca_{0.5}MnO_3$ ($LCMO$) varied. High structural quality thin films were obtained on $LaAlO_3$ substrates using the pulsed laser deposition technique. An antiferromagnetic-to-ferromagnetic transition, in addition to an enhancement of the coercivity, are observed as the $LCMO$ layer thickness increases. The small shift in the origin of the field-cooled hysteresis loop along the field axis indicates the presence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases in the superlattices. We attribute these features to the AFM spin fluctuations at the $Pr_{0.5}Ca_{0.5}MnO_3/La_{0.5}Ca_{0.5}MnO_3$ interfaces resulting from the strain effects.

Magnetotransport properties of ferromagnetic Pr0.85Ca0.15MnO3/ferroelectric Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 superlattice films

Artificial superlattices designed with ferromagnetic Pr0.85Ca0.15MnO3 insulating layer and ferroelectric Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 layer were grown on (100) SrTiO3 substrates. The magnetotransport properties were measured with the current perpendicular to the plane geometry. An increase in magnetoresistance (MR), with no significant low field effect, was observed as the number of ferroelectric Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 layer thickness increases even up to 9 unit cells. For example, the superlattice [(Pr0.85Ca0.15MnO3)10(Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3)9]25 shows 35 % MR at 100 K, though the Pr0.85Ca0.15MnO3 film was a robust insulator with negligible MR even at high applied magnetic field. This observed large MR cannot be explained by simple interfacial ferromagnetism or by the tunneling magnetoresistance. One possible explanation could be the effect due to the ferroelectric spacer layer and the associated magnetoelectric coupling.

Tailoring of ferromagnetic Pr0.85Ca0.15MnO3/ferroelectric Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 superlattices for multiferroic properties

Superlattices composed of ferromagnetic Pr0.85Ca0.15MnO3 and ferroelectric Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 layers were fabricated on (100) SrTiO3 substrates by a pulsed-laser deposition method. The capacitance and resistive parts of the samples were analyzed from the complex impedance measurements, performed on the samples using a special experimental set-up. The superlattice with larger ferroelectric thickness shows unique characteristics which are not present in the parent ferromagnetic thin film. The superlattice show both ferromagnetic and ferroelectric transitions which is an evidence for the coexistence of both the properties. The high magnetoresistance (40 % at 80K) shown by the superlattice can be attributed to the coupling between ferromagnetic and ferroelectric layers, i.e, to the magnetoelectric effect.

Current-induced metallic behavior in Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ thin films: competition between Joule heating and nonlinear conduction mechanism

Thin films of Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 manganites exhibiting charge/orbital-ordered properties with colossal magnetoresistance have been synthesized by the pulsed laser deposition technique on both (100)-SrTiO3 and (100)-LaAlO3 substrates. The effects of current-induced metallic-behavior of the films are investigated as a function of the temperature and the magnetic field. Calculations based on a heat transfer model across the substrate, and our resistivity measurements reveal effects of Joule heating on charge transport over certain ranges of temperatures and magnetic fields. Our results also indicate that a nonlinear conduction, which cannot be explained by homogeneous Joule heating of the film, is observed when the material is less resistive (10-2 W.cm). The origin of this behavior is explained with a model based on local thermal instabilities associated with phase-separation mechanism and a change in the long range charge-ordered state.

Interfacial strain measurements in $SrRuO_3/SrMnO_3$ magnetic multilayers

Magnetic multilayers of $(SrRuO_3)_m(SrMnO_3)_n$ were grown artificially using the pulsed laser deposition technique on (001)-oriented $SrTiO_3$ substrates. The state of strain at the interfaces and the structural coherency are studied in details utilizing asymmetrical $X$-ray diffraction and the $\sin ^2ψ$ method. First, the evolution of the lattice parameters, the crystallinity and the epitaxy of the films are evaluated as a function of the number of $SrMnO_3$ unit cells using $X$-rays diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Second, our results on the stress indicate that the $SrRuO_3/SrMnO_3$ superlattices show a larger residual strain as compared to the single layer film of $SrRuO_3$. This suggests that the lattice stiffening from interfacial strain and inhibiting the dislocation by composition modulation. Finally, these results bring insights on the interfacial stress measurements of oxide multilayers that can be used to control the physical properties at the level of the atomic scale.

Investigation of laser ablated ZnO thin films grown with Zn metal target: a structural study

High quality ZnO thin films were gown using the pulsed laser deposition technique on (0001) Al$_2$O$_3$ substrates in an oxidizing atmosphere, using a Zn metallic target. We varied the growth conditions such as the deposition temperature and the oxygen pressure. First, using a battery of techniques such as x-rays diffraction, Rutherford Backscattering spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy, we evaluated the structural quality, the stress and the degree of epitaxy of the films. Second, the relations between the deposition conditions and the structural properties, that are directly related to the nature of the thin films, are discussed qualitatively. Finally, a number of issues on how to get good-quality ZnO films are addressed.

Structural and magnetic properties of a series of low doped Zn$_{1-x}$Co$_x$O thin films deposited from Zn and Co metal targets on (0001) Al$_2$O$_3$ substrates

We report on the synthesis of low doping Zn$_{1-x}$Co$_x$O ($0<x<0.1$) thin films on (0001)-Al$_2$O$_3$ substrates. The films were prepared in an oxidizing atmosphere, using the pulsed laser deposition technique starting from Zn and Co metallic targets. We first studied the influence of the strains of ZnO and their stuctural properties. Second, we have investigated the structural and the magnetic properties of the Zn$_{1-x}$Co$_x$O films. We show that at low doping, the lattice parameters and the magnetization of the Zn$_{1-x}$Co$_x$O films depend strongly on the Co concentration.

Co distribution in ferromagnetic rutile Co-doped TiO$_2$ thin films grown by laser ablation on silicon substrates

Pure rutile Co-doped TiO$_2$ films were fabricated successfully by the conventional pulsed laser deposition technique on silicon substrates from a ceramic target. Under the right fabrication conditions, Co concentration in the films could be almost the same as in the synthesized target, and films under various conditions all are ferromagnetic well above room temperature. Even though Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy measurements show that Co atoms seem to be mostly localized near the surface of the films and less exist in deeper levels, other experimental evidences show that the ferromagnetism does not come from Co segregations but from the Co-doped TiO$_2$ matrix. Rutile Ti$_1-x$Co$_x$O$_2$ thin films grown by a very simple technique on low-price silicon substrates showing Curie temperature (TC) above 400 K appear to be very attractive to applications.

Phase separation effects in charge-ordered Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 thin film

Compressed Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 films (250nm) deposited on LaAlO3 have been studied by Electron Spin Resonance technique under high frequency and high magnetic field. We show evidences for the presence of a ferromagnetic phase (FM) embedded in the charge-order phase (CO), in form of thin layers which size depends on the strength and orientation of the magnetic field (parallel or perpendicular to the substrate plane). This FM phase presents an easy plane magnetic anisotropy with an anisotropy constant 100 times bigger than typical bulk values. When the magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the substrate plane, the FM phase is strongly coupled to the CO phase whereas for the parallel orientation it keeps an independent ferromagnetic resonance even when the CO phase becomes antiferromagnetic.

Laser ablation of Co:ZnO films deposited from Zn and Co metal targets on (0001) Al$_2$O$_3$ substrates

We report on the synthesis of high-quality Co-doped ZnO thin films using the pulsed laser deposition technique on (0001)-Al$_2$O$_3$ substrates performed in an oxidizing atmosphere, using Zn and Co metallic targets. We firstly optimized the growth of ZnO in order to obtain the less strained film. Highly crystallized Co:ZnO thin films are obtained by an alternative deposition from Zn and Co metal targets. This procedure allows an homogenous repartition of the Co in the ZnO wurzite structure which is confirmed by the linear dependance of the out-of-plane lattice parameter as a function of the Co dopant. In the case of 5% Co doped, the film exhibits ferromagnetism with a Curie temperature close to the room temperature.
