Scales in nuclear matter: Chiral dynamics with pion nucleon form factors

A systematic calculation of nuclear matter is performed which includes the long-range correlations between nucleons arising from one- and two-pion exchange. Three-body effects from $2π$-exchange with excitations of virtual $Δ(1232)$-isobars are also taken into account in our diagrammatic calculation of the energy per particle $\bar E(k_f)$. In order to eliminate possible high-momentum components from the interactions we introduce at each pion-baryon vertex a form factor of monopole type. The empirical nuclear matter saturation point, $ρ_0 \simeq 0.16 $fm$^{-3}$, $\bar E_0\simeq -16 $MeV, is well reproduced with a monopole mass of $Λ\simeq 4πf_π\simeq 1.16 $GeV. As in the recent approach based on the universal low-momentum $NN$-potential $V_{\rm low-k}$, the inclusion of three-body effects is crucial in order to achieve saturation of nuclear matter. We demonstrate that the dependence of the pion-exchange contributions to $\bar E(k_f)$ on the ''resolution'' scale $Λ$ can be compensated over a wide range of $Λ$ by counterterms with two ''running'' contact-couplings. As a further application we study the in-medium chiral condensate $<\bar q q >(ρ)$ beyond the linear density approximation. For $ρ\leq 1.5 ρ_0$ we find small corrections from the derivative $d \bar E(k_f)/d m_π$, which are stable against variations of the monopole regulator mass $Λ$.

Thermodynamics of the PNJL model

QCD thermodynamics is investigated by means of the Polyakov-loop-extended Nambu Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model, in which quarks couple simultaneously to the chiral condensate and to a background temporal gauge field representing Polyakov loop dynamics. The behaviour of the Polyakov loop as a function of temperature is obtained by minimizing the thermodynamic potential of the system. A Taylor series expansion of the pressure is performed. Pressure difference and quark number density are then evaluated up to sixth order in quark chemical potential, and compared to the corresponding lattice data. The validity of the Taylor expansion is discussed within our model, through a comparison between the full results and the truncated ones.

Nucleon mass: from lattice QCD to the chiral limit

Previous extrapolations of lattice QCD results for the nucleon mass to the physically relevant region of small quark masses, using chiral effective field theory, are extended and expanded in several directions. A detailed error analysis is performed. An approach with explicit delta(1232) degrees of freedom is compared to a calculation with only pion and nucleon degrees of freedom. The role of the delta(1232) for the low-energy constants of the latter theory is elucidated. The consistency with the chiral perturbation theory analysis of pion-nucleon scattering data is examined. It is demonstrated that this consistency can indeed be achieved if the delta(1232) dominance of the P-wave pion-nucleon low-energy constant c3 is accounted for. Introduction of the delta(1232) as an explicit propagating degree of freedom is not crucial in order to describe the quark-mass dependence of the nucleon mass, in contrast to the situation with spin observables of the nucleon. The dependence on finite lattice volume is shown to yield valuable additional constraints. What emerges is a consistent and stable extrapolation scheme for pion masses below 0.6 GeV.

Relativistic nuclear energy density functional constrained by low-energy QCD

A relativistic nuclear energy density functional is developed, guided by two important features that establish connections with chiral dynamics and the symmetry breaking pattern of low-energy QCD: a) strong scalar and vector fields related to in-medium changes of QCD vacuum condensates; b) the long- and intermediate-range interactions generated by one-and two-pion exchange, derived from in-medium chiral perturbation theory, with explicit inclusion of $Δ(1232)$ excitations. Applications are presented for binding energies, radii of proton and neutron distributions and other observables over a wide range of spherical and deformed nuclei from $^{16}O$ to $^{210}Po$. Isotopic chains of $Sn$ and $Pb$ nuclei are studied as test cases for the isospin dependence of the underlying interactions. The results are at the same level of quantitative comparison with data as the best phenomenological relativistic mean-field models.

Phases of QCD: lattice thermodynamics and a field theoretical model

We investigate three-colour QCD thermodynamics at finite quark chemical potential. Lattice QCD results are compared with a generalized Nambu Jona-Lasinio model in which quarks couple simultaneously to the chiral condensate and to a background temporal gauge field representing Polyakov loop dynamics. This so-called PNJL model thus includes features of both deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoration. The parameters of the Polyakov loop effective potential are fixed in the pure gauge sector. The chiral condensate and the Polyakov loop as functions of temperature and quark chemical potential are calculated by minimizing the thermodynamic potential of the system. The resulting equation of state, (scaled) pressure difference and quark number density at finite quark chemical potential are then confronted with corresponding Lattice QCD data.

Quark mass dependence of nucleon mass and axial-vector coupling constant

We present an updated analysis of the quark mass dependence of the nucleon mass and nucleon axial-vector coupling g_A, comparing different formulations of SU(2) Baryon Chiral Effective Field Theory, with and without explicit delta (1232) degrees of freedom. We discuss the outcome of the corresponding interpolations between lattice QCD data and the physical values for these two nucleon observables. It turns out that in order to obtain successful interpolating functions at one-loop order, the inclusion of explicit delta (1232) degrees of freedom is not decisive for the nucleon mass but crucial for g_A. A chiral extrapolation of recent lattice results by the LHP collaborations is also shown.

Comment on "Surprises in threshold antikaon-nucleon physics"

It has recently been claimed by Oller et al. [PRL 95 (2005) 172502] that the DEAR kaonic hydrogen data can be reconciled with K^- p scattering data in a chiral unitary approach. In this comment we demonstrate that the proposed solution violates fundamental principles of scattering theory.

Strange magnetic moment of the nucleon and SU(3) breaking: group theoretical approach

An extended group-theoretical approach to magnetic moments of the octet baryons is proposed with the aim of extracting the strange magnetic moment of the nucleon. Special attention is given to flavor SU(3) breaking. In this approach, isoscalar and isovector magnetic moments are treated separately in view of their different behavior under SU(3) breaking. We conclude that the anomalous magnetic moment associated with the flavor singlet current is small. Together with the small isoscalar anomalous magnetic moment of the nucleon, this implies suppression of the strange magnetic moment of the proton which is found to be small and positive, mu^(s) = (0.16 \pm 0.03) mu_N in units of the nuclear magneton.

Chiral dynamics of kaon-nucleon interactions, revisited

The anti-kaon nucleon system close to threshold is analyzed in view of the new accurate DEAR kaonic hydrogen data. The calculations are performed using chiral SU(3) effective field theory in combination with non-perturbative schemes based on coupled channels. Several variants of such approaches are compared with experimental data and the differences in the results are discussed. Coulomb and isospin breaking effects turn out to be important and are both taken into account. The pole structure of the Lambda(1405) resonance close to the anti-kaon nucleon threshold is critically examined.

Kaonic hydrogen and K^- p scattering

Chiral SU(3) effective field theory in combination with a relativistic coupled channels approach is used to perform a novel analysis of the strong interaction shift and width in kaonic hydrogen in view of the new accurate DEAR measurements. Questions of consistency with previous K^- p data are examined. Coulomb and isospin breaking effects turn out to be important and are both taken into account in this work.

Chiral SU(3) dynamics and $Λ$-hyperons in the nuclear medium

We present a novel approach to the density dependent mean field and the spin-orbit interaction of a $Λ$-hyperon in a nuclear many-body system, based on flavor-SU(3) in-medium chiral perturbation theory. The leading long-range $ΛN$-interaction arises from kaon exchange and from two-pion exchange with a $Σ$-hyperon in the intermediate state. The empirical $Λ$-nucleus potential depth of about $-28 $MeV is well reproduced with a single cutoff scale, $\bar Λ= 0.7 $GeV, effectively representing all short-distance (high-momentum) dynamics not resolved at scales characteristic of the nuclear Fermi momentum. This value of $\barΛ$ is remarkably consistent with the one required to reproduce the empirical saturation point of isospin-symmetric nuclear matter in the same framework. The smallness of the $Λ$-nuclear spin-orbit interaction finds a natural (yet novel) explanation in terms of an almost complete cancellation between short-range contributions (properly rescaled from the known nucleonic spin-orbit coupling strength) and long-range terms generated by iterated one-pion exchange with intermediate $Σ$-hyperons. The small $ΣΛ$-mass difference figures prominently in this context.

Chiral approach to nuclear matter: Role of two-pion exchange with virtual delta-isobar excitation

We extend a recent three-loop calculation of nuclear matter in chiral perturbation theory by including the effects from two-pion exchange with single and double virtual $Δ(1232)$-isobar excitation. Regularization dependent short-range contributions from pion-loops are encoded in a few NN-contact coupling constants. The empirical saturation point of isospin-symmetric nuclear matter, $\bar E_0 = -16 $MeV, $ρ_0 = 0.16 $fm$^{-3}$, can be well reproduced by adjusting the strength of a two-body term linear in density (and weakening an emerging three-body term quadratic in density). The nuclear matter compressibility comes out as $K = 304 $MeV. The real single-particle potential $U(p,k_{f0})$ is substantially improved by the inclusion of the chiral $πNΔ$-dynamics: it grows now monotonically with the nucleon momentum $p$. The effective nucleon mass at the Fermi surface takes on a realistic value of $M^*(k_{f0})=0.88M$. As a consequence of these features, the critical temperature of the liquid-gas phase transition gets lowered to the value $T_c \simeq 15 $MeV. In this work we continue the complex-valued single-particle potential $U(p,k_f)+i W(p,k_f)$ into the region above the Fermi surface $p>k_f$. The effects of $2π$-exchange with virtual $Δ$-excitation on the nuclear energy density functional are also investigated. The effective nucleon mass associated with the kinetic energy density is $\widetilde M^*(ρ_0)= 0.64M$. Furthermore, we find that the isospin properties of nuclear matter get significantly improved by including the chiral $πNΔ$-dynamics.

Thermodynamics of two-colour QCD and the Nambu Jona-Lasinio model

We investigate two-flavour and two-colour QCD at finite temperature and chemical potential in comparison with a corresponding Nambu and Jona-Lasinio model. By minimizing the thermodynamic potential of the system, we confirm that a second order phase transition occurs at a value of the chemical potential equal to half the mass of the chiral Goldstone mode. For chemical potentials beyond this value the scalar diquarks undergo Bose condensation and the diquark condensate is nonzero. We evaluate the behaviour of the chiral condensate, the diquark condensate, the baryon charge density and the masses of scalar diquark, antidiquark and pion, as functions of the chemical potential. Very good agreement is found with lattice QCD (N_c=2) results. We also compare with a model based on leading-order chiral effective field theory.

Relativistic nuclear model with point-couplings constrained by QCD and chiral symmetry

We derive a microscopic relativistic point-coupling model of nuclear many-body dynamics constrained by in-medium QCD sum rules and chiral symmetry. The effective Lagrangian is characterized by density dependent coupling strengths, determined by chiral one- and two-pion exchange and by QCD sum rule constraints for the large isoscalar nucleon self-energies that arise through changes of the quark condensate and the quark density at finite baryon density. This approach is tested in the analysis of the equations of state for symmetric and asymmetric nuclear matter, and of bulk and single-nucleon properties of finite nuclei. In comparison with purely phenomenological mean-field approaches, the built-in QCD constraints and the explicit treatment of pion exchange restrict the freedom in adjusting parameters and functional forms of density dependent couplings. It is shown that chiral (two-pion exchange) fluctuations play a prominent role for nuclear binding and saturation, whereas strong scalar and vector fields of about equal magnitude and opposite sign, induced by changes of the QCD vacuum in the presence of baryonic matter, generate the large effective spin-orbit potential in finite nuclei.

Nucleon mass, sigma term and lattice QCD

We investigate the quark mass dependence of the nucleon mass M_N. An interpolation of this observable, between a selected set of fully dynamical two-flavor lattice QCD data and its physical value, is studied using relativistic baryon chiral perturbation theory up to order p^4. In order to minimize uncertainties due to lattice discretization and finite volume effects our numerical analysis takes into account only simulations performed with lattice spacings a<0.15 fm and m_pi L>5. We have also restricted ourselves to data with m_pi<600 MeV and m_sea=m_val. A good interpolation function is found already at one-loop level and chiral order p^3. We show that the next-to-leading one-loop corrections are small. From the p^4 numerical analysis we deduce the nucleon mass in the chiral limit, M_0 approx 0.88 GeV, and the pion-nucleon sigma term sigma_N= (49 +/- 3) MeV at the physical value of the pion mass.

Chiral Perturbation Theory in a Nuclear Background

We propose a novel way to formulate Chiral Perturbation Theory in a nuclear background, characterized by a static, non-uniform distribution of the baryon number that describes the finite nucleus. In the limiting case of a uniform distribution, the theory reduces to the well-known zero-temperature in-medium ChPT. The proposed approach is used to calculate the self-energy of the charged pion in the background of the heavy nucleus at O(p^5) in the chiral expansion, and to derive the leading terms of the pion-nucleus optical potential.

Quasiparticle Description of Hot QCD at Finite Quark Chemical Potential

We study the extension of a phenomenologically successful quasiparticle model that describes lattice results of the equation of state of the deconfined phase of QCD for Tc <= T < 4 Tc, to finite quark chemical potential mu. The phase boundary line Tc(mu), the pressure difference (p(T,mu)-p(T,mu=0))/T^4 and the quark number density nq(T,mu)/T^3 are calculated and compared to recent lattice results. Good agreement is found up to quark chemical potentials of order mu = Tc.

Nuclear Many-Body Dynamics constrained by QCD and Chiral Symmetry

We present a novel description of nuclear many-body systems, both for nuclear matter and finite nuclei, emphasizing the connection with the condensate structure of the QCD ground state and spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking. Lorentz scalar and vector mean-fields are introduced in accordance with QCD sum rules. Nuclear binding arises from pionic fluctuations, using in-medium chiral perturbation theory up to three-loop order. Ground state properties of $^{16}$O and $^{40}$Ca are calculated. The built-in QCD constraints reduce the number of input parameters significantly in comparison with purely phenomenological relativistic mean-field approaches.
