Nuclear energy density functional from chiral pion-nucleon dynamics

We calculate the nuclear energy density functional relevant for N=Z even-even nuclei in the systematic framework of chiral perturbation theory. The calculation includes the one-pion exchange Fock diagram and the iterated one-pion exchange Hartree and Fock diagrams. From these few leading order contributions in the small momentum expansion one obtains already a very good equation of state of isospin symmetric nuclear matter. We find that in the region below nuclear matter saturation density the effective nucleon mass $\widetilde M^*(ρ)$ deviates by at most 15% from its free space value $M$, with $0.89M<\widetilde M^*(ρ) M$ for higher densities. The parameterfree strength of the $(\vec\nabla ρ)^2$-term, $F_\nabla(k_f)$, is at saturation density comparable to that of phenomenological Skyrme forces. The magnitude of $F_J(k_f)$ accompanying the squared spin-orbit density $\vec J ^2$ comes out somewhat larger. The strength of the nuclear spin-orbit interaction, $F_{so}(k_f)$, as given by iterated one-pion exchange is about half as large as the corresponding empirical value, however, with the wrong negative sign. The novel density dependencies of $\widetilde M^*(ρ)$ and $F_{\nabla,so,J}(k_f)$ as predicted by our parameterfree calculation should be examined in nuclear structure calculations (after introducing an additional short range spin-orbit contribution constant in density).

Chiral dynamics and pionic 1s states of Pb and Sn isotopes

We calculate shifts and width of 1s and 2p states of pions bound to heavy nuclei, using an optical potential with its s-wave interaction part based on chiral symmetry. This potential is constructed systematically in two-loop approximation of chiral perturbation theory. A proper treatment of the explicit energy dependence of this potential in conjunction with gauge invariance turns out to be very important. Results are reported for deeply bound pionic states in Pb and Sn isotopes in comparison with the GSI data

Probing the QCD Equation of State

We propose a novel quasiparticle interpretation of the equation of state of deconfined QCD at finite temperature. Using appropriate thermal masses, we introduce a phenomenological parametrisation of the onset of confinement in the vicinity of the phase transition. Lattice results of bulk thermodynamic quantities are well reproduced, the extension to small quark chemical potential is also successful. We then apply the model to dilepton production and charm suppression in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Chiral Dynamics of Deeply Bound Pionic Atoms

We present and discuss a systematic calculation, based on two-loop chiral perturbation theory, of the pion-nuclear s-wave optical potential. A proper treatment of the explicit energy dependence of the off-shell pion self-energy together with (electromagnetic) gauge invariance of the Klein-Gordon equation turns out to be crucial. Accurate data for the binding energies and widths of the 1s and 2p levels in pionic ^{205}Pb and ^{207}Pb are well reproduced, and the notorious "missing repulsion" in the pion-nuclear s-wave optical potential is accounted for. The connection with the in-medium change of the pion decay constant is clarified.

Chiral dynamics of nuclear matter at finite temperature

We extend a recent three-loop calculation of nuclear matter in the systematic framework of chiral perturbation theory to finite temperatures T. The contributions from one- and two-pion exchange diagrams which cause nuclear binding and saturation at T=0 are included for T>0 in the density and temperature dependent free energy per particle, $\bar F(rho,T)$. The so-called anomalous 2pi-exchange contribution $\bar A(rho,T)$ (with no counterpart in the ground state energy density at T=0) is consistently included. The calculated pressure isotherms display the familiar first-order liquid-gas phase transition of isospin symmetric nuclear matter with a critical point at T_c = 25.5 MeV and rho_c = 0.09 fm^{-3}. The too high value of the critical temperature originates from the strong momentum dependence of the underlying single-particle potential U(p,k_{f0}) near the Fermi-surface. We also consider pure neutron matter at T>0 in the same framework and find fair agreement with sophisticated many-body calculations for neutron densities rho_n < 0.2 fm^{-3}.

Phases of QCD, Thermal Quasiparticles and Dilepton Radiation from a Fireball

We calculate dilepton production rates from a fireball adapted to the kinematical conditions realized in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions over a broad range of beam energies. The freeze-out state of the fireball is fixed by hadronic observables. We use this information combined with the initial geometry of the collision region to follow the space-time evolution of the fireball. Assuming entropy conservation, its bulk thermodynamic properties can then be uniquely obtained once the equation of state (EoS) is specified. The high-temperature (QGP) phase is modelled by a non-perturbative quasiparticle model that incorporates a phenomenological confinement description, adapted to lattice QCD results. For the hadronic phase, we interpolate the EoS into the region where a resonance gas approach seems applicable, keeping track of a possible overpopulation of the pion phase space. In this way, the fireball evolution is specified without reference to dilepton data, thus eliminating it as an adjustable parameter in the rate calculations. Dilepton emission in the QGP phase is then calculated within the quasiparticle model. In the hadronic phase, both temperature and finite baryon density effects on the photon spectral function are incorporated. Existing dilepton data from CERES at 158 and 40 AGeV Pb-Au collisions are well described, and a prediction for the PHENIX setup at RHIC for sqrt(s) = 200 AGeV is given.

Quasiparticles in QCD thermodynamics and applications

We propose a novel quasiparticle interpretation of the equation of state of deconfined QCD at finite temperature. Using appropriate thermal masses, we introduce a phenomenological parametrization of the onset of confinement in the vicinity of the phase transition. Lattice results of the energy density, the pressure and the interaction measure of pure SU(3) gauge theory are well reproduced. A relation between the thermal energy density of the Yang-Mills vacuum and the chromomagnetic condensate _T is found. We also present the two flavour QCD equation of state for realistic quark masses and apply the model to dilepton production in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions.

QCD Thermodynamics and Fireball Evolution in URHICs

The fireball created in an ultrarelativistic heavy ion collision is the environment in which all processes providing clues about the possible formation of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) happen. It is therefore crucial to understand the dynamics of this hot and dense system. We set up a model in which the fireball evolution is reconstructed between two stages, the freeze-out, which is accessible by hadronic observables, and the initial collision for which the overlap geometry can be calculated. Using the equation of state (EoS) provided by a quasiparticle model of the QGP, we are able to calculate thermodynamical properties in volume slices of constant proper time and determine the volume expansion self-consistently. The resulting evolution model can then be tested against other observables, such as dilepton yields.

Note on finite temperature sum rules for vector and axial-vector spectral functions

An updated analysis of vector and axial-vector spectral functions is presented. The resonant contributions to the spectral integrals are shown to be expressible as multiples of 4 pi^2 f_pi^2, encoding the scale of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in QCD. Up to order T^2 this behavior carries over to the case of finite temperature.

Role of Chiral Symmetry in the Nuclear Many-Body Problem

The role of chiral (pion) dynamics in nuclear matter is reviewed. Contributions to the energy per particle from one- and two-pion exchange are calculated systematically, and it is demonstrated that already at order $k^4_f$ in the Fermi momentum, two-pion exchange produces realistic nuclear binding together with very reasonable values for the compressibility and the asymmetry energy. Further implications of these results are discussed.

Nuclear mean field from chiral pion-nucleon dynamics

Using the two-loop approximation of chiral perturbation theory, we calculate the momentum and density dependent single particle potential of nucleons in isospin-symmetric nuclear matter. The contributions from one- and two-pion exchange diagrams give rise to a potential depth for a nucleon at rest of $U(0,k_{f0}) = -53.2 $MeV at saturation density. The momentum dependence of the real part of the single particle potential $U(p,k_{f0})$ is non-monotonic and can be translated into a mean effective nucleon mass of $\bar M^* \simeq 0.8 M$. The imaginary part of the single particle potential $W(p,k_f)$ is generated to that order entirely by iterated one-pion exchange. The resulting half width of a nucleon hole-state at the bottom of the Fermi sea comes out as $W(0,k_{f0})=29.7 $MeV. The basic theorems of Hugenholtz-Van-Hove and Luttinger are satisfied in our perturbative two-loop calculation of the nuclear mean field.

Hadronic and Quark-Gluon Excitations of Dense and Hot Matter

We summarize recent developments in our understanding of low-mass quark-antiquark excitations in hadronic matter under various different conditions. This includes the thermodynamics of the chiral condensate, pions as Goldstone bosons in normal nuclear matter, and excursions into extreme territory of the QCD phase diagram: lepton pair production from a fireball expanding through the transition boundary between the quark-gluon and hadron pha ses of QCD.

The omega meson at high temperatures

The decays of the omega meson in a heat bath of thermally excited pions is studied within the framework of real-time thermal field theory using an appropriate effective Lagrangian. We show that the omega meson spectrum broadens considerably at temperatures T > 100 MeV, primarily because of omega pi -> pi pi reactions in the thermal environment.

Model for dilepton rates from a fireball

We calculate the dilepton emission rate from a fireball created in an ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collision. For the partonic phase, we complement the perturbative results by a phenomenological approach based on lattice QCD results, whereas in the hadronic phase temperature and finite baryon density effects on the spectral function are considered. The resulting rates are compared to data from CERES/NA45.

On the Quasiparticle Description of Lattice QCD Thermodynamics

We propose a novel quasiparticle interpretation of the equation of state of deconfined QCD at finite temperature. Using appropriate thermal masses, we introduce a phenomenological parametrization of the onset of confinement in the vicinity of the predicted phase transition. Lattice results of the energy density, the pressure and the interaction measure of pure SU(3) gauge theory are excellently reproduced. We find a relationship between the thermal energy density of the Yang-Mills vacuum and the chromomagnetic condensate _T. Finally, an extension to QCD with dynamical quarks is discussed. Good agreement with lattice data for 2, 2+1 and 3 flavour QCD is obtained. We also present the QCD equation of state for realistic quark masses.

Chiral Dynamics and Nuclear Matter

We calculate the equation of state of isospin-symmetric nuclear matter in the three-loop approximation of chiral perturbation theory. The contributions to the energy per particle $\bar E(k_f)$ from one- and two-pion exchange diagrams are ordered in powers of the Fermi momentum $k_f$ (modulo functions of $k_f /m_π$). It is demonstrated that, already at order ${\cal O}(k_f^4)$, two-pion exchange produces realistic nuclear binding. The underlying saturation mechanism is surprisingly simple (in the chiral limit), namely the combination of an attractive $k_f^3$-term and a repulsive $k_f^4$-term. The empirical saturation point and the nuclear compressibility $K\simeq 250 $MeV are well reproduced at order ${\cal O}(k_f^5)$ with a momentum cut-off of $Λ\simeq 0.65$ GeV which parametrizes short-range dynamics. No further short-distance terms are required in our calculation of nuclear matter. In the same framework we calculate the density-dependent asymmetry energy and find $A_0\simeq 34 $MeV at the saturation point, in good agreement with the empirical value. The pure neutron matter equation of state is also in fair qualitative agreement with sophisticated many-body calculations and a resummation result of effective field theory, but only for low neutron densities $ρ_n <0.25 $fm$^{-3}$.

Systematic calculation of s-wave pion and kaon self-energies in asymmetric nuclear matter

We calculate the pion self-energies in asymmetric nuclear matter in the two-loop approximation of chiral perturbation theory. We find three types of corrections beyond the well-known linear density approximation. The resulting s-wave potential (or equivalent mass-shift) of a $π^-$ in the center of a heavy nucleus like Pb turns out to be $U_{π^-}=Δm_{π^-} \simeq 14$ MeV, about half of what is needed to form the deeply bound and narrow pionic atom-states recently observed at GSI. The potential for a $π^+$ under the same conditions is $U_{π^+}=Δm_{π^+} \simeq -1$ MeV. In the same way we calculate the mass-shifts of $K^+$-mesons in symmetric nuclear matter and neutron matter and find an increase of the $K^+$-mass by 9% and 5%, respectively. As a further application we give an analytical result for the third order term in the scattering length expansion of the in-medium self-energy of an interacting light-boson/heavy-fermion system.
