Diagnosis Of Takotsubo Syndrome By Robust Feature Selection From The Complex Latent Space Of DL-based Segmentation Network

Researchers have shown significant correlations among segmented objects in various medical imaging modalities and disease related pathologies. Several studies showed that using hand crafted features for disease prediction neglects the immense possibility to use latent features from deep learning (DL) models which may reduce the overall accuracy of differential diagnosis. However, directly using classification or segmentation models on medical to learn latent features opt out robust feature selection and may lead to overfitting. To fill this gap, we propose a novel feature selection technique using the latent space of a segmentation model that can aid diagnosis. We evaluated our method in differentiating a rare cardiac disease: Takotsubo Syndrome (TTS) from the ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) using echocardiogram videos (echo). TTS can mimic clinical features of STEMI in echo and extremely hard to distinguish. Our approach shows promising results in differential diagnosis of TTS with 82% diagnosis accuracy beating the previous state-of-the-art (SOTA) approach. Moreover, the robust feature selection technique using LASSO algorithm shows great potential in reducing the redundant features and creates a robust pipeline for short- and long-term disease prognoses in the downstream analysis.

Prospectively accelerated dynamic speech MRI at 3 Tesla using a self-navigated spiral based manifold regularized scheme

This work proposes a self-navigated variable density spiral(VDS) based manifold regularization scheme to prospectively improve dynamic speech MRI at 3T. Short readout 1.3ms spirals were used to minimize off-resonance. A custom 16-channel speech coil was used for improved parallel imaging of vocal tract. The manifold model leveraged similarities between frames sharing similar speech postures without explicit motion binning. The self-navigating capability of VDS was leveraged to learn the Laplacian matrix of the manifold. Reconstruction was posed as a SENSE-based non-local soft weighted temporal regularization scheme. Our approach was compared against view-sharing, low-rank, finite difference, extra-dimension-based sparsity reconstruction constraints. Under-sampling experiments were conducted on five volunteers performing repetitive and arbitrary speaking tasks at different speaking rates. Quantitative evaluation in terms of mean square error over moving edges were performed in a retrospectively under-sampled data. For prospective under-sampling, blinded image quality evaluation in the categories of alias artifacts, spatial blurring, and temporal blurring were performed by three voice research experts. Region of interest analysis at articulator boundaries were performed to assess articulatory motion. Our scheme provided improved reconstruction over the others. With prospective under-sampling, a spatial resolution of 2.4mm2/pixel and a temporal resolution of 17.4 ms/frame for single slice imaging, and 52.2 ms/frame for 3-slice imaging were achieved. We demonstrated implicit motion binning by analyzing the mechanics of the Laplacian matrix. Our method demonstrated superior image quality scores in reducing spatial and temporal blurring. While it exhibited faint alias artifacts similar to temporal finite-difference, it provided statistically significant improvements over remaining constraints.

A Rule Based Expert System to Assess Coronary Artery Disease under Uncertainty

The coronary artery disease (CAD) involves narrowing and damaging the major blood vessels has become the most life threating disease in the world especially in south Asian reason. Although outstanding medical facilities are available in Singapore and India for CAD patients, early detection of CAD stages are necessary to minimize the patients' sufferings and expenses. It is really challenging for doctors to incorporate numerous factors for details analysis and CAD detections are expensive as it needs expensive medical facilities. Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS) may assist to analyze numerous factors for patients. In this paper, a Rule Based Expert System (RBES) is proposed which can predict five different stages of CAD. RBES contains five different Belief Rule Based (BRB) systems and the final output is produced by combining all BRBs using the Evidential Reasoning (ER). Success, Error, Failure, False Omission rates are calculated to measures the performance of the RBES. The Success Rate and False Omission Rate show better performance comparing to existing CDSS.
