A cell-centered Lagrangian ADER-MOOD finite volume scheme on unstructured meshes for a class of hyper-elasticity models

In this paper we present a conservative cell-centered Lagrangian finite volume scheme for the solution of the hyper-elasticity equations on unstructured multidimensional grids. The starting point of the new method is the Eucclhyd scheme, which is here combined with the a posteriori Multidimensional Optimal Order Detection (MOOD) limiting strategy to ensure robustness and stability at shock waves with piece-wise linear spatial reconstruction. The ADER (Arbitrary high order schemes using DERivatives) approach is adopted to obtain second-order of accuracy in time as well. This method has been tested in an hydrodynamics context and the present work aims at extending it to the case of hyper-elasticity models. Such models are presented in a fully Lagrangian framework and the dedicated Lagrangian numerical scheme is derived in terms of nodal solver, GCL compliance, subcell forces and compatible discretization. The Lagrangian numerical method is implemented in 3D under MPI parallelization framework allowing to handle genuinely large meshes. A relative large set of numerical test cases is presented to assess the ability of the method to achieve effective second order of accuracy on smooth flows, maintaining an essentially non-oscillatory behavior and general robustness across discontinuities and ensuring at least physical admissibility of the solution where appropriate. Pure elastic neo-Hookean and non-linear materials are considered for our benchmark test problems in 2D and 3D. These test cases feature material bending, impact, compression, non-linear deformation and further bouncing/detaching motions.

High order finite volume schemes with IMEX time stepping for the Boltzmann model on unstructured meshes

In this work, we present a family of time and space high order finite volume schemes for the solution of the full Boltzmann equation. The velocity space is approximated by using a discrete ordinate approach while the collisional integral is solved by spectral methods. The space reconstruction is realized by integrating the distribution function, describing the state of the system, over arbitrary shaped and closed control volumes using a Central Weighted ENO (CWENO) technique. Compared to other reconstruction methods, this approach permits to keep compact stencil sizes which is a remarkable property in the context of kinetic equations due to the considerable demand of computational resources. The full discretization is then obtained by combining the previous phase-space approximation with high order Implicit-Explicit (IMEX) Runge Kutta schemes. These methods guarantee stability, accuracy and preservation of the asymptotic state. Comparisons of the Boltzmann model with simpler relaxation type kinetic models (like BGK) is proposed showing the capability of the Boltzmann equation to capture different physical solutions. The theoretical order of convergence is numerically measured in different regimes and the methods are tested on several standard two-dimensional benchmark problems in comparison with Direct Simulation Monte Carlo results. The article ends with a prototype engineering problem consisting of a subsonic and a supersonic flow around a NACA 0012 airfoil. All test cases are run with MPI parallelization on several threads, thus making the proposed methods suitable for parallel distributed memory supercomputers.

Modeling and simulating the spatial spread of an epidemic through multiscale kinetic transport equations

In this work we propose a novel space-dependent multiscale model for the spread of infectious diseases in a two-dimensional spatial context on realistic geographical scenarios. The model couples a system of kinetic transport equations describing a population of commuters moving on a large scale (extra-urban) with a system of diffusion equations characterizing the non commuting population acting over a small scale (urban). The modeling approach permits to avoid unrealistic effects of traditional diffusion models in epidemiology, like infinite propagation speed on large scales and mass migration dynamics. A construction based on the transport formalism of kinetic theory allows to give a clear model interpretation to the interactions between infected and susceptible in compartmental space-dependent models. In addition, in a suitable scaling limit, our approach permits to couple the two populations through a consistent diffusion model acting at the urban scale. A discretization of the system based on finite volumes on unstructured grids, combined with an asymptotic preserving method in time, shows that the model is able to describe correctly the main features of the spatial expansion of an epidemic. An application to the initial spread of COVID-19 is finally presented.

A structure-preserving staggered semi-implicit finite volume scheme for continuum mechanics

We propose a new pressure-based structure-preserving (SP) and quasi asymptotic preserving (AP) staggered semi-implicit finite volume scheme for the unified first order hyperbolic formulation of continuum mechanics. The unified model is based on the theory of symmetric-hyperbolic and thermodynamically compatible (SHTC) systems and includes the description of elastic and elasto-plastic solids in the nonlinear large-strain regime as well as viscous and inviscid heat-conducting fluids, which correspond to the stiff relaxation limit of the model. In the absence of relaxation source terms, the homogeneous PDE system is endowed with two stationary linear differential constraints (involutions), which require the curl of distortion field and the curl of the thermal impulse to be zero for all times. In the stiff relaxation limit, the unified model tends asymptotically to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The new structure-preserving scheme presented in this paper can be proven to be exactly curl-free for the homogeneous part of the PDE system, i.e. in the absence of relaxation source terms. We furthermore prove that the scheme is quasi asymptotic preserving in the stiff relaxation limit, in the sense that the numerical scheme reduces to a consistent second-order accurate discretization of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations when the relaxation times tend to zero. Last but not least, the proposed scheme is suitable for the simulation of all Mach number flows thanks to its conservative formulation and the implicit discretization of the pressure terms.

High order pressure-based semi-implicit IMEX schemes for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations at all Mach numbers

This article aims at developing a high order pressure-based solver for the solution of the 3D compressible Navier-Stokes system at all Mach numbers. We propose a cell-centered discretization of the governing equations that splits the fluxes into a fast and a slow scale part, that are treated implicitly and explicitly, respectively. A novel semi-implicit discretization is proposed for the kinetic energy as well as the enthalpy fluxes in the energy equation, hence avoiding any need of iterative solvers. The implicit discretization yields an elliptic equation on the pressure that can be solved for both ideal gas and general equation of state (EOS). A nested Newton method is used to solve the mildly nonlinear system for the pressure in case of nonlinear EOS. High order in time is granted by implicit-explicit (IMEX) time stepping, whereas a novel CWENO technique efficiently implemented in a dimension-by-dimension manner is developed for achieving high order in space for the discretization of explicit convective and viscous fluxes. A quadrature-free finite volume solver is then derived for the high order approximation of numerical fluxes. Central schemes with no dissipation of suitable order of accuracy are finally employed for the numerical approximation of the implicit terms. Consequently, the CFL-type stability condition on the maximum admissible time step is based only on the fluid velocity and not on the sound speed, so that the novel schemes work uniformly for all Mach numbers. Convergence and robustness of the proposed method are assessed through a wide set of benchmark problems involving low and high Mach number regimes, as well as inviscid and viscous flows.

Efficient high order accurate staggered semi-implicit discontinuous Galerkin methods for natural convection problems

We propose a new family of high order staggered semi-implicit discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for the simulation of natural convection problems. Assuming small temperature fluctuations, the Boussinesq approximation is valid and the flow can simply be modeled by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with a transport equation for the temperature and a buoyancy source term in the momentum equation. Our numerical scheme is developed starting from the work presented in [TD14], in which the spatial domain is discretized using a face-based staggered unstructured mesh. For the computation of the advection and diffusion terms, two different algorithms are presented: i) a purely Eulerian explicit upwind-type scheme and ii) a semi-Lagrangian approach. The first methodology leads to a conservative scheme whose major drawback is the time step restriction imposed by the CFL stability condition. On the contrary, computational efficiency can be notably improved relying on a semi-Lagrangian approach. This method leads to an unconditionally stable scheme if the diffusive terms are discretized implicitly. Once the advection and diffusion contributions have been computed, the pressure Poisson equation is solved and the velocity is updated. As a second model for the computation of buoyancy-driven flows, we also consider the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The staggered semi-implicit DG method first proposed in [TD17] for all Mach number flows is properly extended to account for the gravity source terms arising in the momentum and energy conservation laws. The validity and the robustness of our novel class of staggered semi-implicit DG schemes is assessed at the aid of several classical benchmark problems, showing in all cases a good agreement with available numerical reference data. Finally, a detailed comparison between the incompressible and the compressible solver is presented.

High order direct Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian schemes on moving Voronoi meshes with topology changes

We present a new family of very high order accurate direct Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) Finite Volume (FV) and Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) schemes for the solution of nonlinear hyperbolic PDE systems on moving 2D Voronoi meshes that are regenerated at each time step and which explicitly allow topology changes in time. The Voronoi tessellations are obtained from a set of generator points that move with the local fluid velocity. We employ an AREPO-type approach, which rapidly rebuilds a new high quality mesh rearranging the element shapes and neighbors in order to guarantee a robust mesh evolution even for vortex flows and very long simulation times. The old and new Voronoi elements associated to the same generator are connected to construct closed space--time control volumes, whose bottom and top faces may be polygons with a different number of sides. We also incorporate degenerate space--time sliver elements, needed to fill the space--time holes that arise because of topology changes. The final ALE FV-DG scheme is obtained by a redesign of the fully discrete direct ALE schemes of Boscheri and Dumbser, extended here to moving Voronoi meshes and space--time sliver elements. Our new numerical scheme is based on the integration over arbitrary shaped closed space--time control volumes combined with a fully-discrete space--time conservation formulation of the governing PDE system. In this way the discrete solution is conservative and satisfies the GCL by construction. Numerical convergence studies as well as a large set of benchmarks for hydrodynamics and magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) demonstrate the accuracy and robustness of the proposed method. Our numerical results clearly show that the new combination of very high order schemes with regenerated meshes with topology changes lead to substantial improvements compared to direct ALE methods on conforming meshes.

Theoretical and numerical comparison of hyperelastic and hypoelastic formulations for Eulerian non-linear elastoplasticity

The aim of this paper is to compare a hyperelastic with a hypoelastic model describing the Eulerian dynamics of solids in the context of non-linear elastoplastic deformations. Specifically, we consider the well-known hypoelastic Wilkins model, which is compared against a hyperelastic model based on the work of Godunov and Romenski. First, we discuss some general conceptual differences between the two approaches. Second, a detailed study of both models is proposed, where differences are made evident at the aid of deriving a hypoelastic-type model corresponding to the hyperelastic model and a particular equation of state used in this paper. Third, using the same high order ADER Finite Volume and Discontinuous Galerkin methods on fixed and moving unstructured meshes for both models, a wide range of numerical benchmark test problems has been solved. The numerical solutions obtained for the two different models are directly compared with each other. For small elastic deformations, the two models produce very similar solutions that are close to each other. However, if large elastic or elastoplastic deformations occur, the solutions present larger differences.

Central WENO schemes for hyperbolic conservation laws on fixed and moving unstructured meshes

We present a novel arbitrary high order accurate central WENO spatial reconstruction procedure (CWENO) for the solution of nonlinear systems of hyperbolic conservation laws on fixed and moving unstructured simplex meshes in two and three space dimensions. Starting from the given cell averages of a function on a triangular or tetrahedral control volume and its neighbors, the nonlinear CWENO reconstruction yields a high order accurate and essentially non-oscillatory polynomial that is defined everywhere in the cell. Compared to other WENO schemes on unstructured meshes, the total stencil size is the minimum possible one, as in classical point-wise WENO schemes of Jiang and Shu. However, the linear weights can be chosen arbitrarily, which makes the practical implementation on general unstructured meshes particularly simple. We make use of the piecewise polynomials generated by the CWENO reconstruction operator inside the framework of fully discrete and high order accurate one-step ADER finite volume schemes on fixed Eulerian grids as well as on moving Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) meshes. The computational efficiency of the high order finite volume schemes based on the new CWENO reconstruction is tested on several two- and three-dimensional systems of hyperbolic conservation laws and is found to be more efficient in terms of memory consumption and computational efficiency with respect to classical WENO reconstruction schemes on unstructured meshes. We also provide evidence that the new algorithm is suitable for implementation on massively parallel distributed memory supercomputers, showing two numerical examples run with more than one billion degrees of freedom in space. To our knowledge, at present these are the largest simulations ever run with unstructured WENO finite volume schemes.

Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian discontinuous Galerkin schemes with a posteriori subcell finite volume limiting on moving unstructured meshes

We present a new family of high order accurate fully discrete one-step Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) finite element schemes on moving unstructured meshes for the solution of nonlinear hyperbolic PDE in multiple space dimensions, which may also include parabolic terms in order to model dissipative transport processes. High order piecewise polynomials are adopted to represent the discrete solution at each time level and within each spatial control volume of the computational grid, while high order of accuracy in time is achieved by the ADER approach. In our algorithm the spatial mesh configuration can be defined in two different ways: either by an isoparametric approach that generates curved control volumes, or by a piecewise linear decomposition of each spatial control volume into simplex sub-elements. Our numerical method belongs to the category of direct Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) schemes, where a space-time conservation formulation of the governing PDE system is considered and which already takes into account the new grid geometry directly during the computation of the numerical fluxes. Our new Lagrangian-type DG scheme adopts the novel a posteriori sub-cell finite volume limiter method, in which the validity of the candidate solution produced in each cell by an unlimited ADER-DG scheme is verified against a set of physical and numerical detection criteria. Those cells which do not satisfy all of the above criteria are flagged as troubled cells and are recomputed with a second order TVD finite volume scheme. The numerical convergence rates of the new ALE ADER-DG schemes are studied up to fourth order in space and time and several test problems are simulated. Finally, an application inspired by Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) type flows is considered by solving the Euler equations and the PDE of viscous and resistive magnetohydrodynamics (VRMHD).

On direct Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian ADER-WENO finite volume schemes for the HPR model of nonlinear hyperelasticity

This paper is concerned with the numerical solution of the unified first order hyperbolic formulation of continuum mechanics proposed by Peshkov & Romenski (HPR model), which is based on the theory of nonlinear hyperelasticity of Godunov & Romenski . Notably, the governing PDE system is symmetric hyperbolic and fully consistent with the first and the second principle of thermodynamics. The nonlinear system of governing equations of the HPR model is large and includes stiff source terms as well as non-conservative products. In this paper we solve this model for the first time on moving unstructured meshes in multiple space dimensions by employing high order accurate one-step ADER-WENO finite volume schemes in the context of cell-centered direct Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) algorithms. The numerical method is based on a WENO polynomial reconstruction operator on moving unstructured meshes, a fully-discrete one-step ADER scheme that is able to deal with stiff sources, a nodal solver with relaxation to determine the mesh motion, and a path-conservative technique of Castro & Parès for the treatment of non-conservative products. We present numerical results obtained by solving the HPR model with ADER-WENO-ALE schemes in the stiff relaxation limit, showing that fluids (Euler or Navier-Stokes limit), as well as purely elastic or elasto-plastic solids can be simulated in the framework of nonlinear hyperelasticity with the same system of governing PDE. The obtained results are in good agreement when compared to exact or numerical reference solutions available in the literature.

High Order Cell-Centered Lagrangian-Type Finite Volume Schemes with Time-Accurate Local Time Stepping on Unstructured Triangular Meshes

We present a novel cell-centered direct Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) finite volume scheme on unstructured triangular meshes that is high order accurate in space and time and that also allows for time-accurate local time stepping (LTS). The new scheme uses the following basic ingredients: a high order WENO reconstruction in space on unstructured meshes, an element-local high-order accurate space-time Galerkin predictor that performs the time evolution of the reconstructed polynomials within each element, the computation of numerical ALE fluxes at the moving element interfaces through approximate Riemann solvers, and a one-step finite volume scheme for the time update which is directly based on the integral form of the conservation equations in space-time. The inclusion of the LTS algorithm requires a number of crucial extensions, such as a proper scheduling criterion for the time update of each element and for each node; a virtual projection of the elements contained in the reconstruction stencils of the element that has to perform the WENO reconstruction; and the proper computation of the fluxes through the space-time boundary surfaces that will inevitably contain hanging nodes in time due to the LTS algorithm. We have validated our new unstructured Lagrangian LTS approach over a wide sample of test cases solving the Euler equations of compressible gasdynamics in two space dimensions, including shock tube problems, cylindrical explosion problems, as well as specific tests typically adopted in Lagrangian calculations, such as the Kidder and the Saltzman problem. When compared to the traditional global time stepping (GTS) method, the newly proposed LTS algorithm allows to reduce the number of element updates in a given simulation by a factor that may depend on the complexity of the dynamics, but which can be as large as 4.7.

Lagrangian ADER-WENO Finite Volume Schemes on Unstructured Tetrahedral Meshes for Conservative and Nonconservative Hyperbolic Systems in 3D

In this paper we present a new family of high order accurate Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) one-step ADER-WENO finite volume schemes for the solution of nonlinear systems of conservative and non-conservative hyperbolic partial differential equations with stiff source terms on moving tetrahedral meshes in three space dimensions. A WENO reconstruction technique is used to achieve high order of accuracy in space, while an element-local space-time Discontinuous Galerkin finite element predictor on moving meshes is used to obtain a high order accurate one-step time discretization. Within the space-time predictor the physical element is mapped onto a reference element using an isoparametric approach, where the space-time basis and test functions are given by the Lagrange interpolation polynomials passing through a predefined set of space-time nodes. Since our algorithm is cell-centered, the final mesh motion is computed by using a suitable node solver algorithm. A rezoning step as well as a flattener strategy are used in some of the test problems to avoid mesh tangling or excessive element deformations that may occur when the computation involves strong shocks or shear waves. We apply our new high order unstructured ALE schemes to the 3D Euler equations of compressible gas dynamics, for which a set of classical numerical test problems has been solved and for which convergence rates up to sixth order of accuracy in space and time have been obtained. We furthermore consider the equations of classical ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) as well as the non-conservative seven-equation Baer-Nunziato model of compressible multi-phase flows with stiff relaxation source terms.

Lagrangian ADER-WENO Finite Volume Schemes on Unstructured Triangular Meshes Based On Genuinely Multidimensional HLL Riemann Solvers

In this paper we use the genuinely multidimensional HLL Riemann solvers recently developed by Balsara et al. to construct a new class of computationally efficient high order Lagrangian ADER-WENO one-step ALE finite volume schemes on unstructured triangular meshes. A nonlinear WENO reconstruction operator allows the algorithm to achieve high order of accuracy in space, while high order of accuracy in time is obtained by the use of an ADER time-stepping technique based on a local space-time Galerkin predictor. The multidimensional HLL and HLLC Riemann solvers operate at each vertex of the grid, considering the entire Voronoi neighborhood of each node and allows for larger time steps than conventional one-dimensional Riemann solvers. The results produced by the multidimensional Riemann solver are then used twice in our one-step ALE algorithm: first, as a node solver that assigns a unique velocity vector to each vertex, in order to preserve the continuity of the computational mesh; second, as a building block for genuinely multidimensional numerical flux evaluation that allows the scheme to run with larger time steps compared to conventional finite volume schemes that use classical one-dimensional Riemann solvers in normal direction. A rezoning step may be necessary in order to overcome element overlapping or crossing-over. We apply the method presented in this article to two systems of hyperbolic conservation laws, namely the Euler equations of compressible gas dynamics and the equations of ideal classical magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD). Convergence studies up to fourth order of accuracy in space and time have been carried out. Several numerical test problems have been solved to validate the new approach.

High Order Lagrangian ADER-WENO Schemes on Unstructured Meshes - Application of Several Node Solvers to Hydrodynamics and Magnetohydrodynamics

In this paper we present a class of high order accurate cell-centered Arbitrary-Eulerian-Lagrangian (ALE) one-step ADER-WENO finite volume schemes for the solution of nonlinear hyperbolic conservation laws on two-dimensional unstructured triangular meshes. High order of accuracy in space is achieved by a WENO reconstruction algorithm, while a local space-time Galerkin predictor allows the schemes to be high order accurate also in time by using an element-local weak formulation of the governing PDE on moving meshes. The mesh motion can be computed by choosing among three different node solvers, which are for the first time compared with each other in this article: the node velocity may be obtained i) either as an arithmetic average among the states surrounding the node, or, ii) as a solution of multiple one-dimensional half-Riemann problems around a vertex, or, iii) by solving approximately a multidimensional Riemann problem around each vertex of the mesh using the genuinely multidimensional HLL Riemann. Once the vertex velocity and thus the new node location has been determined by the node solver, the local mesh motion is then constructed by straight edges connecting the vertex positions at the old time level with the new ones at the next time level. If necessary, a rezoning step can be introduced here to overcome mesh tangling or highly deformed elements. We apply the high order algorithm presented in this paper to the Euler equations of compressible gas dynamics as well as to the ideal classical and relativistic MHD equations. We show numerical convergence results up to fifth order of accuracy in space and time together with some classical numerical test problems for each hyperbolic system under consideration.

High-Order Unstructured Lagrangian One-Step WENO Finite Volume Schemes for Non-Conservative Hyperbolic Systems: Applications to Compressible Multi-Phase Flows

In this article we present the first better than second order accurate unstructured Lagrangian-type one-step WENO finite volume scheme for the solution of hyperbolic partial differential equations with non-conservative products. The method achieves high order of accuracy in space together with essentially non-oscillatory behavior using a nonlinear WENO reconstruction operator on unstructured triangular meshes. High order accuracy in time is obtained via a local Lagrangian space-time Galerkin predictor method that evolves the spatial reconstruction polynomials in time within each element. The final one-step finite volume scheme is derived by integration over a moving space-time control volume, where the non-conservative products are treated by a path-conservative approach that defines the jump terms on the element boundaries. The entire method is formulated as an Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) method, where the mesh velocity can be chosen independently of the fluid velocity. The new scheme is applied to the full seven-equation Baer-Nunziato model of compressible multi-phase flows in two space dimensions. The use of a Lagrangian approach allows an excellent resolution of the solid contact and the resolution of jumps in the volume fraction. The high order of accuracy of the scheme in space and time is confirmed via a numerical convergence study. Finally, the proposed method is also applied to a reduced version of the compressible Baer-Nunziato model for the simulation of free surface water waves in moving domains. In particular, the phenomenon of sloshing is studied in a moving water tank and comparisons with experimental data are provided.

Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian One-Step WENO Finite Volume Schemes on Unstructured Triangular Meshes

In this article we present a new class of high order accurate Arbitrary-Eulerian-Lagrangian (ALE) one-step WENO finite volume schemes for solving nonlinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws on moving two dimensional unstructured triangular meshes. A WENO reconstruction algorithm is used to achieve high order accuracy in space and a high order one-step time discretization is achieved by using the local space-time Galerkin predictor. For that purpose, a new element--local weak formulation of the governing PDE is adopted on moving space--time elements. The space-time basis and test functions are obtained considering Lagrange interpolation polynomials passing through a predefined set of nodes. Moreover, a polynomial mapping defined by the same local space-time basis functions as the weak solution of the PDE is used to map the moving physical space-time element onto a space-time reference element. To maintain algorithmic simplicity, the final ALE one-step finite volume scheme uses moving triangular meshes with straight edges. This is possible in the ALE framework, which allows a local mesh velocity that is different from the local fluid velocity. We present numerical convergence rates for the schemes presented in this paper up to sixth order of accuracy in space and time and show some classical numerical test problems for the two-dimensional Euler equations of compressible gas dynamics.
