Phase Space Description of the Leading Order Quark and Gluon Production from a Space-Time Dependent Chromofield

We derive source terms for the production of quarks and gluons from the QCD vacuum in the presence of a space-time dependent external chromofield A_{cl} to the order of S^{(1)}. We found that the source terms for the parton production processes A_{cl} -> q\bar{q} and A_{cl},A_{cl}A_{cl} -> gg also include the annihilation processes q\bar{q} -> A_{cl} and gg -> A_{cl},A_{cl}A_{cl}. The source terms we derive are applicable for the description of the production of partons with momentum p larger rhan gA which itself must be larger than Λ_{QCD}. We observe that these source terms for the production of partons from a space-time dependent chromofield can be used to study the production and equilibration of the quark-gluon plasma during the very early stages of an ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collision.

Color Current Induced by Gluon in Background Field Method of QCD

By using the background field method of QCD in a path integral approach, we derive the equation of motion for the classical chromofield and for the gluon in a system containing the gluon and the classical chromofield simultaneously. This inhomogeneous field equation contains a current term, which is the expectation value of a composite operator including linear, square and cubic terms of the gluon field. We also derive identities which the current should obey from the gauge invariance. We calculate the current at the leading order where the current induced by the gluon is opposite in sign to that induced by the quark. This is just the feature of the non-Abelian gauge field theory which has asymptotic freedom. Physically, the induced current can be treated as the 'displacement' current in the polarized vacuum, and its effect is equivalent to redefining the field and the coupling constant.

Strangeness Enhancement in Heavy Ion Collisions - Evidence for Quark-Gluon-Matter ?

The centrality dependence of (multi-)strange hadron abundances is studied for Pb(158 AGeV)Pb reactions and compared to p(158 GeV)Pb collisions. The microscopic transport model UrQMD is used for this analysis. The predicted Lambda/pi-, Xi-/pi- and Omega-/pi- ratios are enhanced due to rescattering in central Pb-Pb collisions as compared to peripheral Pb-Pb or p-Pb collisions. A reduction of the constituent quark masses to the current quark masses m_s \sim 230 MeV, m_q \sim 10 MeV, as motivated by chiral symmetry restoration, enhances the hyperon yields to the experimentally observed high values. Similar results are obtained by an ad hoc overall increase of the color electric field strength (effective string tension of kappa=3 GeV/fm). The enhancement depends strongly on the kinematical cuts. The maximum enhancement is predicted around midrapidity. For Lambda's, strangeness suppression is predicted at projectile/target rapidity. For Omega's, the predicted enhancement can be as large as one order of magnitude. Comparisons of Pb-Pb data to proton induced asymmetric (p-A) collisions are hampered due to the predicted strong asymmetry in the various rapidity distributions of the different (strange) particle species. In p-Pb collisions, strangeness is locally (in rapidity) not conserved. The present comparison to the data of the WA97 and NA49 collaborations clearly supports the suggestion that conventional (free) hadronic scenarios are unable to describe the observed high (anti-)hyperon yields in central collisions. The doubling of the strangeness to nonstrange suppression factor, gamma_s \approx 0.65, might be interpreted as a signal of a phase of nearly massless particles.

Bottom and Charm Production at LHC and RHIC

We study $b\bar{b}$ and $c\bar{c}$ production and the influence of nuclear shadowing at LHC and RHIC energies. We find a significant reduction in the production cross section of both charm and bottom at RHIC and LHC. Bound states such as $Υ$ and $J/Ψ$ are suppressed by this reduction in the charm production cross sections. Therefore, $J/Ψ$ suppression may not be useful as a signature for the quark gluon plasma.

Equilibration of the Gluon-Minijet Plasma at RHIC and LHC

We study the production and equilibration of the gluon-minijet plasma expected to be formed in the central region of ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions at the BNL-RHIC and the CERN-LHC by solving a self-consistent relativistic transport equation. We compute the minijet production within perturbative QCD. Subsequent collisions among the semi-hard partons are treated by considering the elastic gg -> gg processes with screening of the long wavelength modes taken into account. We determine the time $τ_{eq}$ where close to ideal hydrodynamic flow sets in, and find rather similar numbers for central heavy-ion collisions at BNL-RHIC and CERN-LHC energies. The number densities, energy densities and temperatures of the minijet plasma are found to be different at RHIC and LHC, e.g. $T(τ_{eq})\sim220$ MeV and 380 MeV, respectively.

Gluon Pair Production From Space-Time Dependent Chromofield

We compute the probabilty for the processes A -> q \bar{q}, gg via vacuum polarization in the presence of a classical space-time dependent non-abelian field A by applying the background field method of QCD. The processes we consider are leading order in gA and are simillar to A -> e^+e^- in QED. Gluons are treated like a matter field and gauge transformations of the quantum gluonic field are different from those of the classical chromofield. To obtain the correct physical polarization of gluons we deduct the corresponding ghost contributions. We find that the expression for the probability of the leading order process A -> gg is transverse with respect to the momentum of the field. We observe that the contributions from higher order processes to gluon pair production need to be added to the this leading order process. Our result presented here is a part of the expression for the total probability for gluon pair production from a space-time dependent chromfield. The result for q \bar{q} pair production is similar to that of the e^+e^- pair production in QED. Quark and gluon production from a space-time dependent chromofield will play an important role in the study of the production and equilibration of the quark-gluon plasma in ultra relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Antikaon condensation in neutron stars

We investigate the condensation of charged $K^-$ meson and neutral $\bar K^0$ meson in dense neutron star matter. Calculations are performed in relativistic mean field models in which both the baryon-baryon and (anti)kaon-baryon interactions are mediated by meson exchange. It is found that $\bar K^0$ condensation is quite sensitive to the antikaon optical potential and depends more strongly on the nucleonic equation of state. For moderate values of antikaon potential and a rather stiff equation of state, a significant region of maximum mass star will contain $\bar K^0$ meson. The critical density of $\bar K^0$ condensation is always higher than that of $K^-$ condensation. With the appearance of $K^-$ and $\bar K^0$ condensates, pairs of $p-K^-$ and $n-\bar K^0$ are produced with equal proportion leading to a perfectly symmetric matter of nucleons and antikaons in neutron stars. Along with $K^-$ condensate, $\bar K^0$ condensate makes the equation of state much softer resulting in smaller maximum mass stars compared to the case without any condensate.

Baryon Number Conservation and Statistical Production of Antibaryons

The statistical production of antibaryons is considered within the canonical ensemble formulation. We demonstrate that the antibaryon suppression in small systems due to the exact baryon number conservation is rather different in the baryon-free (B=0) and baryon-rich (B>1) systems. At constant values of temperature and baryon density in the baryon-rich systems the density of the produced antibaryons is only weakly dependent on the size of the system. For realistic hadronization conditions this dependence appears to be close to B/(B+1) which is in agreement with the preliminary data of the NA49 Collaboration for the antiproton/pion ratio in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the CERN SPS energies. However, a consistent picture of antibaryon production within the statistical hadronization model has not yet been achieved. This is because the condition of constant hadronization temperature in the baryon-free systems leads to a contradiction with the data on the antiproton/pion ratio in e+e- interactions.

Meson mass modification in strange hadronic matter

We investigate in stable strange hadronic matter (SHM) the modification of the masses of the scalar ($σ$, $σ^*$) and the vector ($ω$, $ϕ$) mesons. The baryon ground state is treated in the relativistic Hartree approximation in the nonlinear $σ$-$ω$ and linear $σ^*$-$ϕ$ model. In stable SHM, the masses of all the mesons reveal considerable reduction due to large vacuum polarization contribution from the hyperons and small density dependent effects caused by larger binding.

$ρ$ meson broadening and dilepton production in heavy ion collisions

The modification of the width of the rho meson due to in-medium decays and collisions is evaluated. In high temperature and/or high density hadronic matter, the collision width is much larger than the one-loop decay width. The large width of the $ρ$ meson in matter seems to be consistent with some current interpretations of the $e^+ e^-$ mass spectra measured at the CERN/SPS.

Rho Meson Broadening in Hot and Dense Hadronic Matter

The modification of the width of rho mesons due to in-medium decays and collisions is evaluated. The decay width is calculated from the imaginary part of the one-loop self-energy at finite temperature. The collision width is related to the cross sections of the $ρ$ + pion and the $ρ$ + nucleon reactions. A calculation based on an effective Lagrangian shows the importance of including the direct $ρπ\toρπ$ scattering which is dominated by the $a_1$ exchange. A large broadening of the spectral function is found, accompanied by a strength suppression at the pole.

Directed and Elliptic Flow

We compare microscopic transport model calculations to recent data on the directed and elliptic flow of various hadrons in 2 - 10 A GeV Au+Au and Pb (158 A GeV) Pb collisions. For the Au+Au excitation function a transition from the squeeze-out to an in-plane enhanced emission is consistently described with mean field potentials corresponding to one incompressibility. For the Pb (158 A GeV) Pb system the elliptic flow prefers in-plane emission both for protons and pions, the directed flow of protons is opposite to that of the pions, which exhibit anti-flow. Strong directed transverse flow is present for protons and Lambdas in Au (6 A GeV) Au collisions as well. Both for the SPS and the AGS energies the agreement between data and calculations is remarkable.

Excluded volume hadron gas model for particle number ratios in A+A collisions

We recapitulate a thermodynamically consistent excluded volume hadron gas model and examine its differences with other ``thermal models'' used in the literature. Preliminary experimental data for particle number ratios in the collisions of Au+Au at the BNL AGS (11$A$ GeV/$c$) and Pb+Pb at the CERN SPS (160$A$ GeV/$c$) are analyzed. For equal values of the hadron hard-core parameters the excluded volume model gives essentially the ideal gas predictions for the particle number ratios, which is similar to other thermal models. We observe, however, the systematic excess of experimental pion abundances compared to the ideal gas results. This effect can be explained in our model by a smaller pion hard-core volume compared to those of other hadrons. The absolute values for particle number and energy densities at the chemical freezeout are predicted with a simultaneous fit to all these AGS and SPS particle number ratios.

Multipole Expansion of Bremsstrahlung in Intermediate Energy Heavy Ion Collisions

Using a multipole expansion of the radiated field generated by a classical electric current, we present a way to interprete the bremsstrahlung spectra of low energy heavy ion collisions. We perform the calculation explicitely for the system ^{12}C+ ^{12}C at 84AMeV and compare the result with the experimental data of E. Grosse et al. Using simple model assumptions for the electromagnetic source current we are able to describe the measured data in terms of coherent photon emission. In this context, the information contained in the measured data is discussed.

Kaon Interferometry as Signal for the QCD Phase Transition at RHIC

Pion and kaon correlations in relativistic nuclear collisions are studied in the framework of boost-invariant, cylindrically symmetric hydrodynamics. It is investigated how the inverse widths of the two-particle correlation functions in out- and side-direction depend on the average transverse momentum of the particle pair, the initial energy density, and the equation of state of the system. The QCD transition leads to a time delay in the expansion of the system and consequently to an enhancement of the ratio of inverse widths in out- and side-direction. This time-delay signal is found to be particularly strong for large average transverse momenta of order 1 GeV and initial energy densities accessible at RHIC. Neutral kaon pair correlation functions, which are not influenced by final state Coulomb effects and less contaminated by resonance decays than pion correlation functions, seem to be the ideal tool to detect this collective time-delay signature of the QCD transition.

Quasi-Continuous Symmetries of Non-Lie Type

We introduce a smooth mapping of some discrete space-time symmetries into quasi-continuous ones. Such transformations are related with q-deformations of the dilations of the Euclidean space and with the non-commutative space. We work out two examples of Hamiltonian invariance under such symmetries. The Schrodinger equation for a free particle is investigated in such a non-commutative plane and a connection with anyonic statistics is found.

A New Nonlinear Liquid Drop Model. Clusters as Solitons on The Nuclear Surface

By introducing in the hydrodynamic model, i.e. in the hydrodynamic equations and the corresponding boundary conditions, the higher order terms in the deviation of the shape, we obtain in the second order the Korteweg de Vries equation (KdV). The same equation is obtained by introducing in the liquid drop model (LDM), i.e. in the kinetic, surface and Coulomb terms, the higher terms in the second order. The KdV equation has the cnoidal waves as steady-state solutions. These waves could describe the small anharmonic vibrations of spherical nuclei up to the solitary waves. The solitons could describe the preformation of clusters on the nuclear surface. We apply this nonlinear liquid drop model to the alpha formation in heavy nuclei. We find an additional minimum in the total energy of such systems, corresponding to the solitons as clusters on the nuclear surface. By introducing the shell effects we choose this minimum to be degenerated with the ground state. The spectroscopic factor is given by the ratio of the square amplitudes in the two minima.
