Riemann-Hilbert analysis for a Nikishin system

In this paper we give the asymptotic behavior of type I multiple orthogonal polynomials for a Nikishin system of order two with two disjoint intervals. We use the Riemann-Hilbert problem for multiple orthogonal polynomials and the steepest descent analysis for oscillatory Riemann-Hilbert problems to obtain the asymptotic behavior in all relevant regions of the complex plane.

Jacobi-Angelesco multiple orthogonal polynomials on an $r$-star

We investigate type I multiple orthogonal polynomials on $r$ intervals which have a common point at the origin and endpoints at the $r$ roots of unity $ω^j$, $j=0,1,\ldots,r-1$, with $ω= \exp(2πi/r)$. We use the weight function $|x|^β(1-x^r)^α$, with $α,β>-1$ for the multiple orthogonality relations. We give explicit formulas for the type I multiple orthogonal polynomials, the coefficients in the recurrence relation, the differential equation, and we obtain the asymptotic distribution of the zeros.

What is $\ldots\ $ a multiple orthogonal polynomial?

This is an extended version of our note in the Notices of the American Mathematical Society 63 (2016), no. 9, in which we explain what multiple orthogonal polynomials are and where they appear in various applications.

Majorization results for zeros of orthogonal polynomials

We show that the zeros of consecutive orthogonal polynomials $p_n$ and $p_{n-1}$ are linearly connected by a doubly stochastic matrix for which the entries are explicitly computed in terms of Christoffel numbers. We give similar results for the zeros of $p_n$ and the associated polynomial $p_{n-1}^{(1)}$ and for the zeros of the polynomial obtained by deleting the $k$th row and column $(1 \leq k \leq n)$ in the corresponding Jacobi matrix.

Multidimensional Toda Lattices: Continuous and Discrete Time

In this paper we present multidimensional analogues of both the continuous- and discrete-time Toda lattices. The integrable systems that we consider here have two or more space coordinates. To construct the systems, we generalize the orthogonal polynomial approach for the continuous and discrete Toda lattices to the case of multiple orthogonal polynomials.

Mehler-Heine asymptotics for multiple orthogonal polynomials

Mehler-Heine asymptotics describe the behavior of orthogonal polynomials near the edges of the interval where the orthogonality measure is supported. For Jacobi polynomials and Laguerre polynomials this asymptotic behavior near the hard edge involves Bessel functions $J_α$. We show that the asymptotic behavior near the endpoint of the interval of (one of) the measures for multiple orthogonal polynomials involves a generalization of the Bessel function. The multiple orthogonal polynomials considered are Jacobi-Angelesco polynomials, Jacobi-Piñeiro polynomials, multiple Laguerre polynomials, multiple orthogonal polynomials associated with modified Bessel functions (of the first and second kind), and multiple orthogonal polynomials associated with Meijer $G$-functions.

Simultaneous Gaussian quadrature for Angelesco systems

We investigate simultaneous Gaussian quadrature for two integrals of the same function $f$ but on two disjoint intervals. The quadrature nodes are zeros of a type II multiple orthogonal polynomial for an Angelesco system. We recall some known results for the quadrature nodes and the quadrature weights and prove some new results about the convergence of the quadrature formulas. Furthermore we give some estimates of the quadrature weights. Our results are based on a vector equilibrium problem in potential theory and weighted polynomial approximation.

Alpert multiwavelets and Legendre-Angelesco multiple orthogonal polynomials

We show that the multiwavelets, introduced by Alpert in 1993, are related to type I Legendre-Angelesco multiple orthogonal polynomials. We give explicit formulas for these Legendre-Angelesco polynomials and for the Alpert multiwavelets. The multiresolution analysis can be done entirely using Legendre polynomials, and we give an algorithm, using Cholesky factorization, to compute the multiwavelets and a method, using the Jacobi matrix for Legendre polynomials, to compute the matrices in the scaling relation for any size of the multiplicity of the multiwavelets.

Asymptotic zero distribution of Jacobi-Piñeiro and multiple Laguerre polynomials

We give the asymptotic distribution of the zeros of Jacobi-Piñeiro polynomials and multiple Laguerre polynomials of the first kind. We use the nearest neighbor recurrence relations for these polynomials and a recent result on the ratio asymptotics of multiple orthogonal polynomials. We show how these asymptotic zero distributions are related to the Fuss-Catalan distribution.

Unique positive solution for an alternative discrete Painlevé I equation

We show that the alternative discrete Painlevé I equation (alt-dP$_{\rm I}$) has a unique solution which remains positive for all $n \geq 0$. Furthermore, we identify this positive solution in terms of a special solution of the second Painlevé equation (P$_{\rm II}$) involving the Airy function $\mathop{\rm Ai}(t)$. The special-function solutions of P$_{\rm II}$ involving only the Airy function $\mathop{\rm Ai}(t)$ therefore have the property that they remain positive for all $n\geq 0$ and all $t \geq 0$, which is a new characterization of these special solutions of P$_{\rm II}$ and alt-dP$_{\rm I}$.

Discrete integrable systems generated by Hermite-Padé approximants

We consider Hermite-Padé approximants in the framework of discrete integrable systems defined on the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^2$. We show that the concept of multiple orthogonality is intimately related to the Lax representations for the entries of the nearest neighbor recurrence relations and it thus gives rise to a discrete integrable system. We show that the converse statement is also true. More precisely, given the discrete integrable system in question there exists a perfect system of two functions, i.e., a system for which the entire table of Hermite-Padé approximants exists. In addition, we give a few algorithms to find solutions of the discrete system.

Hermite-Padé approximants for a pair of Cauchy transforms with overlapping symmetric supports

Hermite-Padé approximants of type II are vectors of rational functions with common denominator that interpolate a given vector of power series at infinity with maximal order. We are interested in the situation when the approximated vector is given by a pair of Cauchy transforms of smooth complex measures supported on the real line. The convergence properties of the approximants are rather well understood when the supports consist of two disjoint intervals (Angelesco systems) or two intervals that coincide under the condition that the ratio of the measures is a restriction of the Cauchy transform of a third measure (Nikishin systems). In this work we consider the case where the supports form two overlapping intervals (in a symmetric way) and the ratio of the measures extends to a holomorphic function in a region that depends on the size of the overlap. We derive Szegő-type formulae for the asymptotics of the approximants, identify the convergence and divergence domains (the divergence domains appear for Angelesco systems but are not present for Nikishin systems), and show the presence of overinterpolation (a feature peculiar for Nikishin systems but not for Angelesco systems). Our analysis is based on a Riemann-Hilbert problem for multiple orthogonal polynomials (the common denominator).

Computing recurrence coefficients of multiple orthogonal polynomials

Multiple orthogonal polynomials satisfy a number of recurrence relations, in particular there is a $(r+2)$-term recurrence relation connecting the type II multiple orthogonal polynomials near the diagonal (the so-called step-line recurrence relation) and there is a system of $r$ recurrence relations connecting the nearest neighbors (the so-called nearest neighbor recurrence relations). In this paper we deal with two problems. First we show how one can obtain the nearest neighbor recurrence coefficients (and in particular the recurrence coefficients of the orthogonal polynomials for each of the defining measures) from the step-line recurrence coefficients. Secondly we show how one can compute the step-line recurrence coefficients from the recurrence coefficients of the orthogonal polynomials of each of the measures defining the multiple orthogonality.

On 2D discrete Schrödinger operators associated with multiple orthogonal polynomials

A class of cross-shaped difference operators on a two dimensional lattice is introduced. The main feature of the operators in this class is that their formal eigenvectors consist of multiple orthogonal polynomials. In other words, this scheme generalizes the classical connection between Jacobi matrices and orthogonal polynomials to the case of operators on lattices. Furthermore we also show how to obtain 2D discrete Schrödinger operators out of this construction and give a number of explicit examples based on known families of multiple orthogonal polynomials.

Orthogonal polynomials for Minkowski's question mark function

Hermann Minkowski introduced a function in 1904 which maps quadratic irrational numbers to rational numbers and this function is now known as Minkowski's question mark function since Minkowski used the notation $?(x)$. This function is a distribution function on $[0,1]$ which defines a singular continuous measure with support $[0,1]$. Our interest is in the (monic) orthogonal polynomials $(P_n)_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ for the Minkowski measure and in particular in the behavior of the recurrence coefficients of the three term recurrence relation. We will give some numerical experiments using the discretized Stieltjes-Gautschi method with a discrete measure supported on the Minkowski sequence. We also explain how one can compute the moments of the Minkowski measure and compute the recurrence coefficients using the Chebyshev algorithm.

Variations of Stieltjes-Wigert and q-Laguerre polynomials and their recurrence coefficients

We look at some extensions of the Stieltjes-Wigert weight functions. First we replace the variable x by x^2 in a family of weight functions given by Askey in 1989 and we show that the recurrence coefficients of the corresponding orthogonal polynomials can be expressed in terms of a solution of the q-discrete Painlevé III equation. Next we consider the q-Laguerre or generalized Stieltjes-Wigert weight functions with a quadratic transformation and derive recursive equations for the recurrence coefficients of the orthogonal polynomials. These turn out to be related to the q-discrete Painlevé V equation. Finally we also consider the little q-Laguerre weight with a quadratic transformation and show that the recurrence coefficients of the orthogonal polynomials are again related to q-discrete Painlevé V.

Multiple orthogonal polynomials associated with an exponential cubic weight

We consider multiple orthogonal polynomials associated with the exponential cubic weight e^{-x^3} over two contours in the complex plane. We study the basic properties of these polynomials, including the Rodrigues formula and nearest-neighbor recurrence relations. It turns out that the recurrence coefficients are related to a discrete Painlevé equation. The asymptotics of the recurrence coefficients, the ratio of the diagonal multiple orthogonal polynomials and the (scaled) zeros of these polynomials are also investigated.
