A family of nonlinear difference equations: existence, uniqueness, and asymptotic behavior of positive solutions

We study solutions $(x_n)_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ of nonhomogeneous nonlinear second order difference equations of the type $\ell_n = x_n ( σ_{n,1} x_{n+1} + σ_{n,0} x_n + σ_{n,-1} x_{n-1} ) + κ_n x_n$, with given initial data $x_0 \in \mathbb{R}$, $x_1 \in \mathbb{R}^+$ where $(\ell_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}} \in \mathbb{R}^+$, $(σ_{n,0})_{n\in\mathbb{N}} \in \mathbb{R}^+$ and $(κ_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}} \in \mathbb{R}$ and the left and right $σ$-coefficients satisfy either $(σ_{n,1})_{n\in\mathbb{N}} \in \mathbb{R}^+$ and $(σ_{n,-1})_{n\in \mathbb{N}} \in \mathbb{R}^+$ or $(σ_{n,1})_{n\in\mathbb{N}} \in \mathbb{R}^+_0$ and $(σ_{n,-1})_{n\in\mathbb{N}} \in \mathbb{R}^+_0$. Depending on one's standpoint, such equations originate either from orthogonal polynomials associated with certain Shohat-Freud-type exponential weight functions or from Painlevé's discrete equation $\#1$.

Multiple Meixner polynomials and non-Hermitian oscillator Hamiltonians

Multiple Meixner polynomials are polynomials in one variable which satisfy orthogonality relations with respect to $r>1$ different negative binomial distributions (Pascal distributions). There are two kinds of multiple Meixner polynomials, depending on the selection of the parameters in the negative binomial distribution. We recall their definition and some formulas and give generating functions and explicit expressions for the coefficients in the nearest neighbor recurrence relation. Following a recent construction of Miki, Tsujimoto, Vinet and Zhedanov (for multiple Meixner polynomials of the first kind), we construct $r>1$ non-Hermitian oscillator Hamiltonians in $r$ dimensions which are simultaneously diagonalizable and for which the common eigenstates are expressed in terms of multiple Meixner polynomials of the second kind.

The generalized Krawtchouk polynomials and the fifth Painlevé equation

We study the recurrence coefficients of the orthogonal polynomials with respect to a semi-classical extension of the Krawtchouk weight. We derive a coupled discrete system for these coefficients and show that they satisfy the fifth Painlevé equation when viewed as functions of one of the parameters in the weight.

Ladder operators and differential equations for multiple orthogonal polynomials

In this paper, we obtain the ladder operators and associated compatibility conditions for the type I and the type II multiple orthogonal polynomials. These ladder equations extend known results for orthogonal polynomials and can be used to derive the differential equations satisfied by multiple orthogonal polynomials. Our approach is based on Riemann-Hilbert problems and the Christoffel-Darboux formula for multiple orthogonal polynomials, and the nearest-neighbor recurrence relations. As an illustration, we give several explicit examples involving multiple Hermite and Laguerre polynomials, and multiple orthogonal polynomials with exponential weights and cubic potentials.

Asymptotics for the ratio and the zeros of multiple Charlier polynomials

We investigate multiple Charlier polynomials and in particular we will use the (nearest neighbor) recurrence relation to find the asymptotic behavior of the ratio of two multiple Charlier polynomials. This result is then used to obtain the asymptotic distribution of the zeros, which is uniform on an interval. We also deal with the case where one of the parameters of the various Poisson distributions depend on the degree of the polynomial, in which case we obtain another asymptotic distribution of the zeros.

Interlacing properties of zeros of multiple orthogonal polynomials

It is well known that the zeros of orthogonal polynomials interlace. In this paper we study the case of multiple orthogonal polynomials. We recall known results and some recursion relations for multiple orthogonal polynomials. Our main result gives a sufficient condition, based on the coefficients in the recurrence relations, for the interlacing of the zeros of neighboring multiple orthogonal polynomials. We give several examples illustrating our result.

Recurrence Coefficients of a New Generalization of the Meixner Polynomials

We investigate new generalizations of the Meixner polynomials on the lattice $\mathbb{N}$, on the shifted lattice $\mathbb{N}+1-β$ and on the bi-lattice $\mathbb{N}\cup (\mathbb{N}+1-β)$. We show that the coefficients of the three-term recurrence relation for the orthogonal polynomials are related to the solutions of the fifth Painlevé equation P$_{\textup V}$. Initial conditions for different lattices can be transformed to the classical solutions of P$_{\textup V}$ with special values of the parameters. We also study one property of the Bäcklund transformation of P$_{\textup V}$.

Recurrence coefficients of generalized Charlier polynomials and the fifth Painlevé equation

We investigate generalizations of the Charlier polynomials on the lattice $\mathbb{N}$, on the shifted lattice $\mathbb{N}+1-β$ and on the bi-lattice $\mathbb{N}\cup (\mathbb{N}+1-β)$. We show that the coefficients of the three-term recurrence relation for the orthogonal polynomials are related to solutions of the fifth Painlevé equation PV (which can be transformed to the third Painlevé equation). Initial conditions for different lattices can be transformed to the classical solutions of PV with special values of the parameters.

The recurrence coefficients of semi-classical Laguerre polynomials and the fourth Painlevé equation

We show that the coefficients of the three-term recurrence relation for orthogonal polynomials with respect to a semi-classical extension of the Laguerre weight satisfy the fourth Painlevé equation when viewed as functions of one of the parameters in the weight. We compare different approaches to derive this result, namely, the ladder operators approach, the isomonodromy deformations approach and combining the Toda system for the recurrence coefficients with a discrete equation. We also discuss a relation between the recurrence coefficients for the Freud weight and the semi-classical Laguerre weight and show how it arises from the Bäcklund transformation of the fourth Painlevé equation.

The nearest neighbor recurrence coefficients for multiple orthogonal polynomials

We show that multiple orthogonal polynomials for r measures $(μ_1,...,μ_r)$ satisfy a system of linear recurrence relations only involving nearest neighbor multi-indices $\vec{n}\pm \vec{e}_j$, where $\vec{e}_j$ are the standard unit vectors. The recurrence coefficients are not arbitrary but satisfy a system of partial difference equations with boundary values given by the recurrence coefficients of the orthogonal polynomials with each of measures $μ_j$. We show how the Christoffel-Darboux formula for multiple orthogonal polynomials can be obtained easily using this information. We give explicit examples involving multiple Hermite, Charlier, Laguerre, and Jacobi polynomials.

Orthogonal polynomials on a bi-lattice

We investigate generalizations of the Charlier and the Meixner polynomials on the lattice N and on the shifted lattice N+1-β. We combine both lattices to obtain the bi-lattice N \cup (N+1-β) and show that the orthogonal polynomials on this bi-lattice have recurrence coefficients which satisfy a non-linear system of recurrence equations, which we can identify as a limiting case of an (asymmetric) discrete Painlevé equation.

Irrationality proof of a $q$-extension of $ζ(2)$ using little $q$-Jacobi polynomials

We show how one can use Hermite-Padé approximation and little $q$-Jacobi polynomials to construct rational approximants for $ζ_q(2)$. These numbers are $q$-analogues of the well known $ζ(2)$. Here $q=\frac{1}{p}$, with $p$ an integer greater than one. These approximants are good enough to show the irrationality of $ζ_q(2)$ and they allow us to calculate an upper bound for its measure of irrationality: $μ(ζ_q(2))\leq 10π^2/(5π^2-24) \approx 3.8936$. This is sharper than the upper bound given by Zudilin (\textit{On the irrationality measure for a $q$-analogue of $ζ(2)$}, Mat. Sb. \textbf{193} (2002), no. 8, 49--70).

$q$-Discrete Painlevé equations for recurrence coefficients of modified $q$-Freud orthogonal polynomials

We present an asymmetric $q$-Painlevé equation. We will derive this using $q$-orthogonal polynomials with respect to generalized Freud weights: their recurrence coefficients will obey this $q$-Painlevé equation (up to a simple transformation). We will show a stable method of computing a special solution which gives the recurrence coefficients. We establish a connection with $α-q-P_V$.

Leonhard Euler and a q-analogue of the logarithm

We study a q-logarithm which was introduced by Euler and give some of its properties. This q-logarithm did not get much attention in the recent literature. We derive basic properties, some of which were already given by Euler in a 1751-paper and 1734-letter to Daniel Bernoulli. The corresponding q-analogue of the dilogarithm is introduced. The relation to the values at 1 and 2 of a q-analogue of the zeta function is given. We briefly describe some other q-logarithms that have appeared in the recent literature.

Pade and Hermite-Pade approximation and orthogonality

We give a short introduction to Pade approximation (rational approximation to a function with close contact at one point) and to Hermite-Pade approximation (simultaneous rational approximation to several functions with close contact at one point) and show how orthogonality plays a crucial role. We give some insight into how logarithmic potential theory helps in describing the asymptotic behavior and the convergence properties of Pade and Hermite-Pade approximation.

Rakhmanov's theorem for orthogonal matrix polynomials on the unit circle

Rakhmanov's theorem for orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle gives a sufficient condition on the orthogonality measure for orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle, in order that the reflection coefficients (the recurrence coefficients in the Szego recurrence relation) converge to zero. In this paper we give the analog for orthogonal matrix polynomials on the unit circle.

Irrationality of $ζ_q(1)$ and $ζ_q(2)$

In this paper we show how one can obtain simultaneous rational approximants for $ζ_q(1)$ and $ζ_q(2)$ with a common denominator by means of Hermite-Pade approximation using multiple little q-Jacobi polynomials and we show that properties of these rational approximants prove that 1, $ζ_q(1)$, $ζ_q(2)$ are linearly independent over the rationals. In particular this implies that $ζ_q(1)$ and $ζ_q(2)$ are irrational. Furthermore we give an upper bound for the measure of irrationality.
