Fe-assisted epitaxial growth of 4-inch single-crystal transition-metal dichalcogenides on c-plane sapphire without miscut angle

Epitaxial growth and controllable doping of wafer-scale single-crystal transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are two central tasks for extending Moore's law beyond silicon. However, despite considerable efforts, addressing such crucial issues simultaneously under two-dimensional (2D) confinement is yet to be realized. Here we design an ingenious epitaxial strategy to synthesize record-breaking 4-inch single-crystal Fe-doped TMDCs monolayers on industry-compatible c-plane sapphire without miscut angle. In-depth characterizations and theoretical calculations reveal that the introduction of Fe significantly decreases the formation energy of parallel steps on sapphire surfaces and contributes to the edge-nucleation of unidirectional TMDCs domains (>99%). The ultrahigh electron mobility (~86 cm2 V -1 s-1) and remarkable on/off current ratio (~108) are discovered on 4-inch single-crystal Fe-MoS2 monolayers due to the ultralow contact resistance and perfect Ohmic contact with metal electrodes. This work represents a substantial leap in terms of bridging the synthesis and doping of wafer-scale single-crystal 2D semiconductors without the need for substrate miscut, which should promote the further device downscaling and extension of Moore's law.

Comprehensive Performance Evaluation of LID Practices for the Sponge City Construction: A Case Study in Guangxi, China

Sponge city construction is a new concept of urban stormwater management, which can effectively relieve urban flooding, reduce non-point source pollution, and promote the usage of rainwater resources, often including the application of Low Impact Development (LID) techniques. Although 30 cities in China have been chosen to implement sponge city construction, there is a lack of a quantitative evaluation method to evaluate the environmental, economic, and social benefits of LID practices. This paper develops a comprehensive evaluation system to quantify the benefits of different combinations of LID units using the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) and the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. The performance of five LID design scenarios with different locations and sizes of the bio-retention facility, the grassed swale, the sunken green space, the permeable pavement, and the storage tank were analyzed for a sports center project in Guangxi, China. Results indicated that the green scenario that contains 34.5% of bio-retention facilities and 46.0% of sunken green spaces had the best comprehensive performance regarding meeting the requirements of 75% annual total runoff reduction and the attainment of good operation performance, rainwater utilization, landscape promotion, and ecological service functions, mainly because they are micro-scale and decentralized facilities that can manage stormwater at the source through the natural process. The optimal scenario was adopted to construct the project, and the proposed evaluation system can also be applied to optimal selection and performance effect evaluation of LID practices in other sponge city projects.

Dispersal of G-band bright points at different longitudinal magnetic field strengths

G-band bright points (GBPs) are thought to be the foot-points of magnetic flux tubes. The aim of this paper is to investigate the relation between the diffusion regimes of GBPs and the associated longitudinal magnetic field strengths. Two high resolution observations of different magnetized environments were acquired with the Hinode/Solar Optical Telescope. Each observation was recorded simultaneously with G-band filtergrams and Narrow-band Filter Imager (NFI) Stokes I and V images. GBPs are identified and tracked automatically, and then categorized into several groups by their longitudinal magnetic field strengths, which are extracted from the calibrated NFI magnetograms using a point-by-point method. The Lagrangian approach and the distribution of diffusion indices approach are adopted separately to explore the diffusion regime of GBPs for each group. It is found that the values of diffusion index and diffusion coefficient both decrease exponentially with the increasing longitudinal magnetic field strengths whichever approach is used. The empirical formulas deduced from the fitting equations are proposed to describe these relations. Stronger elements tend to diffuse more slowly than weak elements, independently of the magnetic flux of the surrounding medium. This may be because the magnetic energy of stronger elements is not negligible compared with the kinetic energy of the gas, and therefore the flows cannot perturb them so easily.Yang

A volume stability theorem on toric manifolds with positive Ricci curvature

In this short note, we will prove a volume stability theorem which says that if an n-dimensional toric manifold $M$ admits a $\mathbb{T}^n$ invariant Kähler metric $ω$ with Ricci curvature no less than 1 and its volume is close to the volume of $\mathbb{CP}^n$, $M$ is bi-holomorphic to $\mathbb{CP}^n$.

Deep phase modulation interferometry

We have developed a method to equip homodyne interferometers with the capability to operate with constant high sensitivity over many fringes for continuous real-time tracking. The method can be considered as an extension of the "J_1...J_4" methods, and its enhancement to deliver very sensitive angular measurements through Differential Wavefront Sensing is straightforward. Beam generation requires a sinusoidal phase modulation of several radians in one interferometer arm. On a stable optical bench, we have demonstrated a long-term sensitivity over thousands of seconds of 0.1 mrad/sqrt[Hz] that correspond to 20 pm/sqrt[Hz] in length, and 10 nrad/sqrt[Hz] in angle at millihertz frequencies.
