Movable Antenna Empowered Covert Dual-Functional Radar-Communication

Movable antenna (MA) has emerged as a promising technology to flexibly reconfigure wireless channels by adjusting antenna placement. In this paper, we study a secured dual-functional radar-communication (DFRC) system aided by movable antennas. To enhance the communication security, we aim to maximize the achievable sum rate by jointly optimizing the transmitter beamforming vectors, receiving filter, and antenna placement, subject to radar signal-to-noise ratio (SINR) and transmission covertness constraints. We consider multiple Willies operating in both non-colluding and colluding modes. For noncolluding Willies, we first employ a Lagrangian dual transformation procedure to reformulate the challenging optimization problem into a more tractable form. Subsequently, we develop an efficient block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm that integrates semidefinite relaxation (SDR), projected gradient descent (PGD), Dinkelbach transformation, and successive convex approximation (SCA) techniques to tackle the resulting problem. For colluding Willies, we first derive the minimum detection error probability (DEP) by characterizing the optimal detection statistic, which is proven to follow the generalized Erlang distribution. Then, we develop a minimum mean square error (MMSE)-based algorithm to address the colluding detection problem. We further provide a comprehensive complexity analysis on the unified design framework. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method can significantly improve the covert sum rate, and achieve a superior balance between communication and radar performance compared with existing benchmark schemes.

Movable antenna (MA) has emerged as a promising technology to flexibly reconfigure wireless channels by adjusting antenna placement. In this paper, we study a secured dual-functional radar-communication (DFRC) system enhanced by movable antennas. To ensure communication security, we aim to maximize the achievable sum rate by jointly optimizing the transmit beamforming vectors, receiving filter, and antenna placement, subject to radar signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and transmission covertness constraints. To tackle this challenging optimization problem, we first employ a Lagrangian dual transformation process to reformulate it into a more tractable form. Subsequently, the problem is solved by employing a block coordinate descent (BCD) procedure, incorporating semidefinite relaxation (SDR), projected gradient descent (PGD), and successive convex approximation (SCA) techniques. Robust Optimization for Movable Antenna-aided Cell-Free ISAC with Time Synchronization Errors

The cell-free integrated sensing and communication (CF-ISAC) system, which effectively mitigates intra-cell interference and provides precise sensing accuracy, is a promising technology for future 6G networks. However, to fully capitalize on the potential of CF-ISAC, accurate time synchronization (TS) between access points (APs) is critical. Due to the limitations of current synchronization technologies, TS errors have become a significant challenge in the development of the CF-ISAC system. In this paper, we propose a novel CF-ISAC architecture based on movable antennas (MAs), which exploits spatial diversity to enhance communication rates, maintain sensing accuracy, and reduce the impact of TS errors. We formulate a worst-case sensing accuracy optimization problem for TS errors to address this challenge, deriving the worst-case Cram\'er-Rao lower bound (CRLB). Subsequently, we develop a joint optimization framework for AP beamforming and MA positions to satisfy communication rate constraints while improving sensing accuracy. A robust optimization framework is designed for the highly complex and non-convex problem. Specifically, we employ manifold optimization (MO) to solve the worst-case sensing accuracy optimization problem. Then, we propose an MA-enabled meta-reinforcement learning (MA-MetaRL) to design optimization variables while satisfying constraints on MA positions, communication rate, and transmit power, thereby improving sensing accuracy. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed robust optimization algorithm significantly improves the accuracy of the detection and is strong against TS errors. Moreover, compared to conventional fixed position antenna (FPA) technologies, the proposed MA-aided CF-ISAC architecture achieves higher system capacity, thus validating its effectiveness.

Meta-Reinforcement Learning Optimization for Movable Antenna-aided Full-Duplex CF-DFRC Systems with Carrier Frequency Offset

By enabling spectrum sharing between radar and communication operations, the cell-free dual-functional radar-communication (CF-DFRC) system is a promising candidate to significantly improve spectrum efficiency in future sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks. However, in wideband scenarios, synchronization errors caused by carrier frequency offset (CFO) can severely reduce both communication capacity and sensing accuracy. To address this challenge, this paper integrates movable antennas (MAs) into the CF-DFRC framework, leveraging their spatial flexibility and adaptive beamforming to dynamically mitigate CFO-induced impairments. To fully exploit the advantages of MAs in wideband scenarios with CFO, we aim to maximize the worst-case sum-rate of communication and sensing by jointly optimizing MA positions, {beamforming}, and CFO parameters, subject to transmit power and MA positioning constraints. Due to the non-convex nature of the problem, we propose a robust meta reinforcement learning (MRL)-based two-stage alternating optimization strategy. In the first stage, we employ manifold optimization (MO) with penalty dual decomposition (PDD) to solve the CFO-robust worst-case subproblem. In the second stage, we adopt to jointly optimize {the MA positions and beamforming vectors} in a data-driven manner {for dynamic wireless environments}. Simulation results show that the proposed MRL approach significantly outperforms conventional deep reinforcement learning (DRL) schemes in both communication and sensing performance under CFO impairments. Furthermore, compared to fixed-position antennas (FPAs), the MA-aided CF-DFRC system exhibits

Robust Transceiver Design for RIS Enhanced Dual-Functional Radar-Communication with Movable Antenna

Movable antennas (MAs) have demonstrated significant potential in enhancing the performance of dual-functional radar-communication (DFRC) systems. In this paper, we explore an MA-aided DFRC system that utilizes a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to enhance signal coverage for communications in dead zones. To enhance the radar sensing performance in practical DFRC environments, we propose a unified robust transceiver design framework aimed at maximizing the minimum radar signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) in a cluttered environment. Our approach jointly optimizes transmit beamforming, receive filtering, antenna placement, and RIS reflecting coefficients under imperfect channel state information (CSI) for both sensing and communication channels. To deal with the channel uncertainty-constrained issue, we leverage the convex hull method to transform the primal problem into a more tractable form. We then introduce a two-layer block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm, incorporating fractional programming (FP), successive convex approximation (SCA), S-Lemma, and penalty techniques to reformulate it into a series of semidefinite program (SDP) subproblems that can be efficiently solved. We provide a comprehensive analysis of the convergence and computational complexity for the proposed design framework. Simulation results demonstrate the robustness of the proposed method, and show that the MA-based design framework can significantly enhance the radar SINR performance while achieving an effective balance between the radar and communication performance.

Power Source Allocation for RIS-aided Integrating Sensing, Communication, and Power Transfer Systems Based on NOMA

This paper proposes a novel communication system framework based on a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided integrated sensing, communication, and power transmission (ISCPT) communication system. RIS is used to improve transmission efficiency and sensing accuracy. In addition, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technology is incorporated in RIS-aided ISCPT systems to boost the spectrum utilization efficiency of RIS-aided ISCPT systems. We consider the power minimization problem of the RIS-aided ISCPT-NOMA system. Power minimization is achieved by jointly optimizing the RIS phase shift, decoding order, power splitting (PS) factor, and transmit beamforming while satisfying quality of service (QoS), radar target sensing accuracy, and energy harvesting constraints. Since the objective function and constraints in the optimization problem are non-convex, the problem is an NP-hard problem. To solve the non-convex problem, this paper proposes a block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm. Specifically, the non-convex problem is divided into four sub-problems: i.e. the transmit beamforming, RIS phase shift, decoding order and PS factor optimization subproblems. We employ semidefinite relaxation (SDR) and successive convex approximation (SCA) techniques to address the transmit beamforming optimization sub-problem. Subsequently, we leverage the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm to solve the RIS phase shift optimization problem. As for the decoding order optimization, we provide a closed-form expression. For the PS factor optimization problem, the SCA algorithm is proposed. Simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm and highlight the balanced performance achieved across sensing, communication, and power transfer.

Movable Antenna Enabled Integrated Sensing and Communication

In this paper, we investigate a novel integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system aided by movable antennas (MAs). A bistatic radar system, in which the base station (BS) is configured with MAs, is integrated into a multi-user multiple-input-single-output (MU-MISO) system. Flexible beamforming is studied by jointly optimizing the antenna coefficients and the antenna positions. Compared to conventional fixed-position antennas (FPAs), MAs provide a new degree of freedom (DoF) in beamforming to reconfigure the field response, and further improve the received signal quality for both wireless communication and sensing. We propose a communication rate and sensing mutual information (MI) maximization problem by flexible beamforming optimization. The complex fractional objective function with logarithms are first transformed with the fractional programming (FP) framework. Then, we propose an efficient algorithm to address the non-convex problem with coupled variables by alternatively solving four sub-problems. We derive the closed-form expression to update the antenna coefficients by Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions. To improve the direct gradient ascent (DGA) scheme in updating the positions of the antennas, a 3-stage search-based projected GA (SPGA) method is proposed. Simulation results show that MAs significantly enhance the overall performance of the ISAC system, achieving 59.8\% performance gain compared to conventional ISAC system enabled by FPAs. Meanwhile, the proposed SPGA-based method has remarkable performance improvement compared the DGA method in antenna position optimization.

Secure Enhancement for RIS-Aided UAV with ISAC: Robust Design and Resource Allocation

This paper analyses the security performance of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communication system with integrated sensing and communications (ISAC). We consider a multiple-antenna UAV transmitting ISAC waveforms to simultaneously detect an untrusted target in the surrounding environment and communicate with a ground Internet-of-Things (IoT) device in the presence of an eavesdropper (Eve). Given that the Eve can conceal their channel state information (CSI) in practical scenarios, we assume that the CSI of the eavesdropper channel is imperfect. For this RIS-aided ISAC-UAV system, we aim to maximize the average communication secrecy rate by jointly optimizing UAV trajectory, RIS passive beamforming, transmit beamforming, and receive beamforming. However, this joint optimization problem is non-convex due to multi-variable coupling. As such, we solve the optimization using an efficient and tractable algorithm using a block coordinate descent (BCD) method. Specifically, we develop a successive convex approximation (SCA) algorithm based on semidefinite relaxation (SDR) to optimise the joint optimization as four separate non-convex subproblems. Numerical results show that our proposed algorithm can successfully ensure the accuracy of sensing targets and significantly improve the communication secrecy rate of the IoT communication devices.

Movable Antenna Enabled ISAC Beamforming Design for Low-Altitude Airborne Vehicles

In mobile systems with low-altitude vehicles, integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is considered an effective approach to increase the transmission rate due to limited spectrum resources. To further improve the ISAC performance, this paper proposes a novel method called integrated sensing and communication-movable antenna (ISAC-MA) to optimize the antenna's position. Our goal is to support low-space vehicles by optimizing radar and communication joint beamforming and antenna position in the presence of clutter. This scheme not only guarantees the required signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for sensing but also further improves the SNR for communication. A successive convex approximation (SCA)-based block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm is proposed to maximize communication capacity under the condition of sensing SNR. Numerical results show that, compared with the traditional ISAC system and various benchmark schemes, the proposed ISAC-MA system can achieve higher communication capacity under the same sensing SNR constraints.

Flexible Antenna Arrays for Wireless Communications: Modeling and Performance Evaluation

Flexible antenna arrays (FAAs), distinguished by their rotatable, bendable, and foldable properties, are extensively employed in flexible radio systems to achieve customized radiation patterns. This paper aims to illustrate that FAAs, capable of dynamically adjusting surface shapes, can enhance communication performances with both omni-directional and directional antenna patterns, in terms of multi-path channel power and channel angle Cram\'{e}r-Rao bounds. To this end, we develop a mathematical model that elucidates the impacts of the variations in antenna positions and orientations as the array transitions from a flat to a rotated, bent, and folded state, all contingent on the flexible degree-of-freedom. Moreover, since the array shape adjustment operates across the entire beamspace, especially with directional patterns, we discuss the sum-rate in the multi-sector base station that covers the $360^\circ$ communication area. Particularly, to thoroughly explore the multi-sector sum-rate, we propose separate flexible precoding (SFP), joint flexible precoding (JFP), and semi-joint flexible precoding (SJFP), respectively. In our numerical analysis comparing the optimized FAA to the fixed uniform planar array, we find that the bendable FAA achieves a remarkable $156\%$ sum-rate improvement compared to the fixed planar array in the case of JFP with the directional pattern. Furthermore, the rotatable FAA exhibits notably superior performance in SFP and SJFP cases with omni-directional patterns, with respective $35\%$ and $281\%$.

Extremely Large-Scale Dynamic Metasurface Antennas (XL-DMAs): Near-Field Modeling and Channel Estimation

Dynamic metasurface antennas (DMAs) represent a novel transceiver array architecture for extremely large-scale (XL) communications, offering the advantages of reduced power consumption and lower hardware costs compared to conventional arrays. This paper focuses on near-field channel estimation for XL-DMAs. We begin by analyzing the near-field characteristics of uniform planar arrays (UPAs) and introducing the Oblong Approx. model. This model decouples elevation-azimuth (EL-AZ) parameters for XL-DMAs, providing an effective means to characterize the near-field effect. It offers simpler mathematical expressions than the second-order Taylor expansion model, all while maintaining negligible model errors for oblong-shaped arrays. Building on the Oblong Approx. model, we propose an EL-AZ-decoupled estimation framework that involves near- and far-field parameter estimation for AZ/EL and EL/AZ directions, respectively. The former is formulated as a distributed compressive sensing problem, addressed using the proposed off-grid distributed orthogonal least squares algorithm, while the latter involves a straightforward parallelizable search. Crucially, we illustrate the viability of decoupled EL-AZ estimation for near-field UPAs, exhibiting commendable performance and linear complexity correlated with the number of metasurface elements. Moreover, we design an measurement matrix optimization method with the Lorentzian constraint on DMAs and highlight the estimation performance degradation resulting from this constraint.

Near-Field Channel Estimation for Extremely Large-Scale Terahertz Communications

Future Terahertz communications exhibit significant potential in accommodating ultra-high-rate services. Employing extremely large-scale array antennas is a key approach to realize this potential, as they can harness substantial beamforming gains to overcome the severe path loss and leverage the electromagnetic advantages in the near field. This paper proposes novel estimation methods designed to enhance efficiency in Terahertz widely-spaced multi-subarray (WSMS) systems. Initially, we introduce three sparse channel representation methods: polar-domain representation (PD-R), multi-angular-domain representation (MAD-R), and two-dimensional polar-angular-domain representation (2D-PAD-R). Each method is meticulously developed for near-field WSMS channels, capitalizing on their sparsity characteristics. Building on this, we propose four estimation frameworks using the sparse recovery theory: polar-domain estimation (PD-E), multi-angular-domain estimation (MAD-E), two-stage polar-angular-domain estimation (TS-PAD-E), and two-dimensional polar-angular-domain estimation (2D-PAD-E). Particularly, 2D-PAD-E, integrating a 2D dictionary process, and TS-PAD-E, with its sequential approach to angle and distance estimation, stand out as particularly effective for near-field angle-distance estimation, enabling decoupled calculation of these parameters. Overall, these frameworks provide versatile and efficient solutions for WSMS channel estimation, balancing low complexity with high-performance outcomes. Additionally, they represent a fresh perspective on near-field signal processing.

Flexible Beamforming for Movable Antenna-Enabled Integrated Sensing and Communication

This paper investigates flexible beamforming design in an integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) network with movable antennas (MAs). A bistatic radar system is integrated into a multi-user multiple-input-single-output (MU-MISO) system, with the base station (BS) equipped with MAs. This enables array response reconfiguration by adjusting the positions of antennas. Thus, a joint beamforming and antenna position optimization problem, namely flexible beamforming, is proposed to maximize communication rate and sensing mutual information (MI). The fractional programming (FP) method is adopted to transform the non-convex objective function, and we alternatively update the beamforming matrix and antenna positions. Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions are employed to derive the close-form solution of the beamforming matrix, while we propose an efficient search-based projected gradient ascent (SPGA) method to update the antenna positions. Simulation results demonstrate that MAs significantly enhance the ISAC performance when employing our proposed algorithm, achieving a 59.8% performance gain compared to fixed uniform arrays.

Dual-Robust Integrated Sensing and Communication: Beamforming under CSI Imperfection and Location Uncertainty

A dual-robust design of beamforming is investigated in an integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system.Existing research on robust ISAC waveform design, while proposing solutions to imperfect channel state information (CSI), generally depends on prior knowledge of the target's approximate location to design waveforms. This approach, however, limits the precision in sensing the target's exact location. In this paper, considering both CSI imperfection and target location uncertainty, a novel framework of joint robust optimization is proposed by maximizing the weighted sum of worst-case data rate and beampattern gain. To address this challenging problem, we propose an efficient two-layer iteration algorithm based on S-Procedure and convex hull. Finally, numerical results verify the effectiveness and performance improvement of our dual-robust algorithm, as well as the trade-off between communication and sensing performance.

Flexible Precoding for Multi-User Movable Antenna Communications

This letter rethinks traditional precoding in multi-user wireless communications with movable antennas (MAs). Utilizing MAs for optimal antenna positioning, we introduce a sparse optimization (SO)-based approach focusing on regularized zero-forcing (RZF). This framework targets the optimization of antenna positions and the precoding matrix to minimize inter-user interference and transmit power. We propose an off-grid regularized least squares-based orthogonal matching pursuit (RLS-OMP) method for this purpose. Moreover, we provide deeper insights into antenna position optimization using RLS-OMP, viewed from a subspace projection angle. Overall, our proposed flexible precoding scheme demonstrates a sum rate that exceeds more than twice that of fixed antenna positions.

CRB Minimization for RIS-aided mmWave Integrated Sensing and Communications

In this paper, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is employed in a millimeter wave (mmWave) integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) system. To alleviate the multi-hop attenuation, the semi-self sensing RIS approach is adopted, wherein sensors are configured at the RIS to receive the radar echo signal. Focusing on the estimation accuracy, the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) for estimating the direction-of-the-angles is derived as the metric for sensing performance. A joint optimization problem on hybrid beamforming and RIS phaseshifts is proposed to minimize the CRB, while maintaining satisfactory communication performance evaluated by the achievable data rate. The CRB minimization problem is first transformed as a more tractable form based on Fisher information matrix (FIM). To solve the complex non-convex problem, a double layer loop algorithm is proposed based on penalty concave-convex procedure (penalty-CCCP) and block coordinate descent (BCD) method with two sub-problems. Successive convex approximation (SCA) algorithm and second order cone (SOC) constraints are employed to tackle the non-convexity in the hybrid beamforming optimization. To optimize the unit modulus constrained analog beamforming and phase shifts, manifold optimization (MO) is adopted. Finally, the numerical results verify the effectiveness of the proposed CRB minimization algorithm, and show the performance improvement compared with other baselines. Additionally, the proposed hybrid beamforming algorithm can achieve approximately 96% of the sensing performance exhibited by the full digital approach within only a limited number of radio frequency (RF) chains.

Mutual Information-Based Integrated Sensing and Communications: A WMMSE Framework

In this letter, a weighted minimum mean square error (WMMSE) empowered integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system is investigated. One transmitting base station and one receiving wireless access point are considered to serve multiple users a sensing target. Based on the theory of mutual-information (MI), communication MI and sensing MI rate are utilized as the performance metrics under the presence of clutters. In particular, we propose an novel MI-based WMMSE-ISAC method by developing a unique transceiver design mechanism to maximize the weighted sensing and communication sum-rate of this system. Such a maximization process is achieved by utilizing the classical method -- WMMSE, aiming to better manage the effect of sensing clutters and the interference among users. Numerical results show the effectiveness of our proposed method, and the performance trade-off between sensing and communication is also validated.
