Incommensurate Magnetic Ordered Phase with Enhanced Low-Temperature Magnetic Specific Heat in SmAu$_3$Al$_7$

Neutron scattering and muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) measurements on single-crystal SmAu$_3$Al$_7$ reveal magnetically ordered states associated with successive transitions at $T_{\rm N}$ = 2.8 K and $T^*$ = 0.9 K. Magnetic Bragg peaks appear below $T_{\rm N}$ with an incommensurate (IC) propagation vector ${\bf q}$ = (0.30, 0, 1.33). $μ$SR detects spontaneous internal fields below $T_{\rm N}$, and the spectral shape is consistent with the IC magnetic ordering. No anomalies are observed at $T^*$, indicating that the magnetic structure remains essentially unchanged below and above $T^*$. The magnetic order is revealed to be a spatially homogeneous long-range ordered state, rather than a partially disordered state proposed in earlier studies. The possible connection between the IC magnetic order and the enhanced low-temperature magnetic specific heat is discussed.

Muon spin relaxation in mixed perovskite (LaAlO$_3$)$_{x}$(SrAl$_{0.5}$Ta$_{0.5}$O$_3$)$_{1-x}$ with $x\simeq 0.3$

We report on muon spin relaxation ($μ^+$SR) measurements in a mixed perovskite compound, (LaAlO$_3$)$_{x}$(SrAl$_{0.5}$Ta$_{0.5}$O$_3$)$_{1-x}$ with $x\simeq 0.3$ (LSAT), which is widely used as a single-crystalline substrate for thin film deposition. In zero applied field (ZF), muon depolarization due to the distribution of nuclear dipole fields was observed in the temperature range from 4 K to 270 K. Interestingly, $μ^+$SR time spectra in ZF maintained a Gaussian-like feature over the entire range, while the depolarization rate exhibited a monotonic decrease with increasing temperature. This behavior may be attributed to the thermally activated diffusion of muons between a few adjacent sites within a confined space of the angstrom scale, where the motionally averaged local field that each muon experiences can remain non-zero and result in maintaining the Gaussian-like line shape. The spatial distribution of electrostatic potential at lattice interstices evaluated via density functional theory calculations suggests that such a restriction of muon diffusion paths can be caused by the random distribution of cations with different nominal valences in the mixed perovskite lattice.

Unveiling unconventional magnetism at the surface of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$

Materials with strongly correlated electrons exhibit physical properties that are often difficult to predict as they result from the interactions of large numbers of electrons combined with several quantum degrees of freedom. The layered oxide perovskite Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ is a strongly correlated electron material that has been intensively investigated since its discovery due to its unusual physical properties. Whilst recent experiments have reopened the debate on the exact symmetry of the superconducting state in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, a deeper understanding of the Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ normal state appears crucial as this is the background in which electron pairing occurs. Here, by using low-energy muon spin spectroscopy we discover the existence of magnetism at the surface of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ in its normal state. We detect static weak dipolar fields yet manifesting below a relatively high onset temperature larger than 50 K, which reveals the unconventional nature of the observed magnetism. We relate the origin of this phase breaking time reversal symmetry to electronic ordering in the form of orbital loop currents that originate at the reconstructed Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ surface. Our observations set a reference for the discovery of the same magnetic phase in other materials and unveil an electronic ordering mechanism that can influence unconventional electron pairing with broken time reversal symmetry in those materials where the observed magnetic phase coexists with superconductivity.

Quantum critical spin-liquid-like behavior in S = 1/2 quasikagome lattice CeRh1-xPdxSn investigated using muon spin relaxation and neutron scattering

We present the results of muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) and neutron scattering on the Ce-based quasikagome lattice CeRh$_{1-x}$Pd$_{x}$Sn ($x=0.1$ to 0.75). Our ZF-$μ$SR results reveal the absence of static long-range magnetic order down to 0.05~K in $x = 0.1$ single crystals. The weak temperature-dependent plateaus of the dynamic spin fluctuations below 0.2~K in ZF-$μ$SR together with its longitudinal-field (LF) dependence between 0 and 3~kG indicate the presence of dynamic spin fluctuations persisting even at $T$ = 0.05~K without static magnetic order. On the other hand, $C_{\text{4f}}$/$T$ increases as --log $T$ on cooling below 0.9~K, passes through a broad maximum at 0.13~K and slightly decreases on further cooling. The ac-susceptibility also exhibits a frequency independent broad peak at 0.16~K, which is prominent with an applied field $H$ along $c$-direction. We, therefore, argue that such a behavior for $x=0.1$ (namely, a plateau in spin relaxation rate ($λ$) below 0.2~K and a linear $T$ dependence in $C_{\text{4f}}$ below 0.13~K) can be attributed to a metallic spin-liquid (SL) ground state near the quantum critical point in the frustrated Kondo lattice. The LF-$μ$SR study suggests that the out of kagome plane spin fluctuations are responsible for the SL behavior. Low energy inelastic neutron scattering (INS) of $x$ = 0.1 reveals gapless magnetic excitations, which are also supported by the behavior of $C_{\text{4f}}$ proportional to $T^{1.1}$ down to 0.06~K.

Negatively Charged Muonium and Related Centers in Solids

Muonium (Mu) centers formed upon implantation of $μ^+$ in a solid have long been investigated as an experimentally accessible model of isolated hydrogen impurities. Recent discoveries of hydridic centers formed at oxygen vacancies have stimulated a renewed interest in H$^-$ and corresponding Mu$^-$ centers in oxides. However, the two diamagnetic centers, Mu$^+$ and Mu$^-$, are difficult to separate spectroscopically. In this review article, we summarize established and developing methodologies for identifying Mu$^-$ centers in solids, and review recent Mu studies on said centers supposedly formed in mayenite, oxygen-deficient SrTiO$_{3-x}$, and BaTiO$_{3-x}$H$_x$ oxyhydride.

High temperature antiferromagnetism in Yb based heavy fermion systems proximate to a Kondo insulator

Given the parallelism between the physical properties of Ce and Yb based magnets and heavy fermions due to the electron-hole symmetry, it has been rather odd that the transition temperature of the Yb based compounds is normally very small, as low as $\sim$ 1 K or even lower, whereas Ce counterparts may often have the transition temperature well exceeding 10 K. Here, we report our experimental discovery of the transition temperature reaching 20 K for the first time in a Yb based compound at ambient pressure. The Mn substitution at the Al site in an intermediate valence state of $α$-YbAlB$_{4}$ not only induces antiferromagnetic transition at a record high temperature of 20 K but also transforms the heavy fermion liquid state in $α$-YbAlB$_{4}$ into a highly resistive metallic state proximate to a Kondo insulator.

Frustrated magnetism in the Heisenberg pyrochlore antiferromagnets $A$Yb$_2$$X$$_4$ ($A$ = Cd, Mg, $X$ = S, Se)

Our polycrystalline sample study on the Yb-based chalcogenide spinels $A$Yb$_2$$X_4$ ($A =$ Cd, Mg, $X =$ S, Se) has revealed frustrated magnetism due to the antiferromagnetically coupled Heisenberg spin on the pyrochlore lattice. Our crystal electric field analysis indicates the Yb ground state has nearly Heisenberg spins with a strong quantum character of the ground doublet. All the materials exhibit an antiferromagnetic order at 1.4-1.8 K, much lower temperature than the antiferromagnetic exchange coupling scale of $\sim 10$ K. The magnetic specific heat $C_{\rm M}$ shows a $T^{3}$ dependence, indicating the gapless feature in the Yb-based chalcogenide spinels. The magnetic entropy change much smaller than $R$ ln 2 below the Néel temperature and the small local magnetic field estimated from the $μ$SR measurements strongly suggest the significantly reduced size of the ordered moment in comparison with the bare moment size 1.33 $μ_{\rm B}$/Yb supporting strong fluctuations in the commensurate and incommensurate ordered states in CdYb$_2$S$_4$ and MgYb$_2$S$_4$, respectively.

Possible unconventional superconductivity in Na$_x$CoO$_2$yH$_2$O probed by $μ$SR

The superconducting property of recently discovered sodium cobalt oxyhydrate, Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_2$1.3H$_2$O ($T_c=4.5$ K), has been studied by means of muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) down to 2 K. It was found that the zero-field muon spin relaxation rate is independent of the temperature, indicating that no static magnetism appears in this compound, at least above 2 K. The result also provides evidence against the breakdown of time-reversal symmetry for the superconducting order parameter. Meanwhile, the muon Knight shift at 60 kOe shows no obvious reduction below $T_c$, suggesting that the local spin susceptibility is preserved upon a superconducting transition. Considering these observations, possible unconventional superconductivity of Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_2$1.3H$_2$O is discussed.

Magnetic Ground State of Pr$_{0.89}$LaCe$_{0.11}$CuO$_{4+α-δ}$ with Varied Oxygen Depletion Probed by Muon Spin Relaxation

The magnetic ground state of an electron-doped cuprate superconductor Pr$_{1-x}$LaCe$_x$CuO$_{4+α-δ}$ ($x=0.11, α\simeq0.04$) has been studied by means of muon spin rotation/relaxation (\msr) over a wide variety of oxygen depletion, $0.03\leδ\le0.12$. Appearance of weak random magnetism over entire crystal volume has been revealed by a slow exponential relaxation. The absence of $δ$-dependence for the random magnetism and the multiplet pattern of muon Knight shift at higher fields strongly suggest that the random moments are associated with excited Pr$^{3+}$ ions under crystal electric field.

Quasiparticle Excitations outside the Vortex Cores in MgB$_2$ Probed by Muon Spin Rotation

The magnetic penetration depth $λ$ in the mixed state of MgB$_2$ has been determined microscopically from the field distribution around magnetic vortices probed by muon spin rotation. Both the temperature and magnetic field dependence of $λ$ strongly suggest the presence of delocalized quasiparticles around the vortex cores. In particular, the effect of Doppler shift has been clearly observed as a finite gradient of the field dependence of $λ$, strongly suggesting an anisotropic order parameter with the region of a vanishingly small energy gap.
