Spherical harmonics method for computing the image stress due to a spherical void

We develop an efficient numerical method for calculating the image stress field induced by spherical voids in materials. The method is applied to dislocation-void interactions in dislocation dynamics simulations. We obtain a complete set of basis functions for the solution of the image stress problem, as well as their corresponding displacement, stress, and traction fields in terms of the linear combination of spherical harmonics. Using the fast transformation between the real and spherical-harmonics spaces provided by the SHTOOLS package, the method is more efficient than other image stress solvers such as the finite-element method. This method can readily be extended for solving elasticity problems involving inclusions and inhomogeneities, contact between spheres, as well as other differential equations with spherical boundaries beyond elasticity.

Cameraless High-throughput 3D Imaging Flow Cytometry

Increasing demand for understanding the vast heterogeneity of cellular phenotypes has driven the development of imaging flow cytometry (IFC), that combines features of flow cytometry with fluorescence and bright field microscopy. IFC combines the throughput and statistical advantage of flow cytometry with the ability to discretely measure events based on a real or computational image, as well as conventional flow cytometry metrics. A limitation of existing IFC systems is that, regardless of detection methodology, only two-dimensional (2D) cell images are obtained. Without tomographic three-dimensional (3D) resolution the projection problem remains: collapsing 3D information onto a 2D image, limiting the reliability of spot counting or co-localization crucial to cell phenotyping. Here we present a solution to the projection problem: three-dimensional imaging flow cytometry (3D-IFC), a high-throughput 3D cell imager based on optical sectioning microscopy. We combine orthogonal light-sheet scanning illumination with our previous spatiotemporal transformation detection to produce 3D cell image reconstruction from a cameraless single-pixel photodetector readout. We further demonstrate this capability by co-capturing 3D fluorescence and label-free side-scattering images of single cells in flow at a velocity of 0.2 m s-1, corresponding to a throughput of approximately 500 cells per second with 60,000 voxels (resized subsequently to 106 voxels) for each cell image at a resolution of less than 1 micron in X, Y, and Z dimensions. Improved high-throughput imaging tools are needed to phenotype-genotype recognized heterogeneity in the fields of immunology, oncology, cell- and gene- therapy, and drug discovery.

Functional Gaussian Distribution Modelling of Mobility Prediction Accuracy for Wireless Users

Mobility entropy is proposed to measure predictability of human movements, based on which, the upper and lower bound of prediction accuracy is deduced, but corresponding mathematical expressions of prediction accuracy keeps yet open. In this work, we try to analyze and model prediction accuracy in terms of entropy based on the 2-order Markov chain model empirical results on a large scale CDR data set, which demonstrates the observation that users with the same level of entropy achieve different levels of accuracy\cite{Empirical}. After dividing entropy into intervals, we fit the probability density distributions of accuracy in each entropy interval with Gaussian distribution and then we estimate the corresponding mean and standard deviation of these distributions. After observing that the parameters vary with increasing entropy, we then model the relationship between parameters and entropy using least squares method. The mean can be modelled as a linear function, while the standard deviation can be modelled as a Gaussian distribution. Thus based on the above analysis, the probability density function of accuracy given entropy can be expressed by functional Gaussian distribution. The insights from our work is the first step to model the correlation prediction accuracy and predictability entropy, thus shed light on the further work in this direction.

Lithium Niobate Metasurfaces

Lithium niobate is a multi-functional material, which has been regarded as one of the most promising platform for the multi-purpose optical components and photonic circuits. Targeting at the miniature optical components and systems, lithium niobate microstructures with feature sizes of several to hundreds of micrometers have been demonstrated, such as waveguides, photonic crystals, micro-cavities, and modulators, et al. In this paper, we presented subwavelength nanograting metasurfaces fabricated in a crystalline lithium niobate film, which hold the possibilities towards further shrinking the footprint of the photonic devices with new optical functionalities. Due to the collective lattice interactions between isolated ridge resonances, distinct transmission spectral resonances were observed, which could be tunable by varying the structural parameters. Furthermore, our metasurfaces are capable to show high efficiency transmission structural colors as a result of structural resonances and intrinsic high transparency of lithium niobate in visible spectral range. Our results would pave the way for the new types of ultracompact photonic devices based on lithium niobate.

Porosity-mediated High-performance Thermoelectric Materials

Whether porosity can effectively improve thermoelectric performance is still an open question. Herein we report that thermoelectric performance can be significantly enhanced by creating porosity in n-type Mg3.225Mn0.025Sb1.5Bi0.49Te0.01, with a ZT of ~0.9 at 323 K and ~1.6 at 723 K, making the average ZT much higher for better performance. The large improvement at room temperature is significant considering that such a ZT value is comparable to the best ZT at this temperature in n-type Bi2Te3. The enhancement was mainly from the improved electrical mobility and multi-scale phonon scattering, particularly from the well-dispersed bismuth nano-precipitates in the porous structure. We further extend this approach to other thermoelectric materials such as half-Heuslers Nb0.56V0.24Ti0.2FeSb and Hf0.25Zr0.75NiSn0.99Sb0.01 and Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 showing similar improvements, further advancing thermoelectric materials for applications.

Application of the novel fractional grey model FAGMO(1,1,k) to predict China's nuclear energy consumption

At present, the energy structure of China is shifting towards cleaner and lower amounts of carbon fuel, driven by environmental needs and technological advances. Nuclear energy, which is one of the major low-carbon resources, plays a key role in China's clean energy development. To formulate appropriate energy policies, it is necessary to conduct reliable forecasts. This paper discusses the nuclear energy consumption of China by means of a novel fractional grey model FAGMO(1,1,k). The fractional accumulated generating matrix is introduced to analyse the fractional grey model properties. Thereafter, the modelling procedures of the FAGMO(1,1,k) are presented in detail, along with the transforms of its optimal parameters. A stochastic testing scheme is provided to validate the accuracy and properties of the optimal parameters of the FAGMO(1,1,k). Finally, this model is used to forecast China's nuclear energy consumption and the results demonstrate that the FAGMO(1,1,k) model provides accurate prediction, outperforming other grey models.

Critical Strain for Surface Nucleation of Dislocations in Silicon

A long-standing discrepancy exists between experiments and atomistic models concerning the critical strain needed for surface nucleation of dislocations in silicon-germanium systems. While dislocation nucleation is readily observed in hetero-epitaxial thin films with misfit strains less than 4%, existing atomistic models predict that a critical strain over 7.8% is needed to overcome the kinetic barrier for dislocation nucleation. Using zero-temperature energy barrier calculations and finite-temperature Molecular Dynamics simulations, we show that 3-dimensional surface features such as a sharply bent step can lower the predicted critical nucleation strain of a shuffle-set dislocation to 6.4%, and that of a shuffle-glide dislocation complex to 5.3%. Consistent findings are obtained using both the Stillinger-Weber (SW) and modified embedded-atom method (MEAM) potentials, providing support to the physical relevance of the shuffle-glide dislocation complex, which was previously considered as an artifact of the SW potential.

Efficient orbital angular momentum transfer between plasmons and free electrons

Free electrons can efficiently absorb or emit plasmons excited in a thin conductor, giving rise to multiple energy peaks in the transmitted electron spectra separated by multiples of the plasmon energy. When the plasmons are chiral, this can also give rise to transfer of orbital angular momentum (OAM). Here, we show that large amounts of OAM can be efficiently transferred between chiral plasmons supported by a thin film and free electrons traversing it. Under realistic conditions, our predictive simulations reveal efficient absorption of $\ell\gg1$ chiral plasmons of vorticity $m\gg1$, resulting in an OAM transfer $\ell m\hbar\gg\hbar$. Our work supports the use of chiral plasmons sustained by externally illuminated thin films as a way of generating high-vorticity electrons, resulting in a remarkably large fraction of kinetic energy associated with motion along the azimuthal direction, perpendicular to the incident beam.

A hierarchical random compression method for kernel matrices

In this paper, we propose a hierarchical random compression method (HRCM) for kernel matrices in fast kernel summations. The HRCM combines the hierarchical framework of the H-matrix and a randomized sampling technique of the column and row spaces for far-field interaction kernel matrices. We show that a uniform column/row sampling (with a given sample size) of a far-field kernel matrix, with- out the need and associated cost to pre-compute a costly sampling distribution, will give a low-rank compression of such low-rank matrices, independent of the matrix sizes and only dependent on the separation of the source and target locations. This far-field random compression technique is then implemented at each level of the hierarchical decomposition for general kernel matrices, resulting in an O(N logN) random compression method. Error and complexity analysis for the HRCM are included. Numerical results for electrostatic and Helmholtz wave kernels have vali- dated the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method with a cross-over matrix size, in comparison of direct O(N^2) summations, in the order of thousands for a 3-4 digits relative accuracy.

Dislocation Networks and the Microstructural Origin of Strain Hardening

When metals are plastically deformed, the total density of dislocations increases with strain as the microstructure is continuously refined, leading to the strain hardening behavior. Here we report the fundamental role played by the junction formation process in the connection between dislocation microstructure evolution and the strain hardening rate in face-centered cubic (FCC) Cu, as revealed by discrete dislocation dynamics (DDD) simulations. The dislocation network formed during [001] loading consists of line segments whose lengths closely follow an exponential distribution. This exponential distribution is a consequence of junction formation by dislocations on different slip planes, which can be modeled as a one-dimensional Poisson process. We show that, according to the exponential distribution, the dislocation microstructure evolution is governed by two non-dimensional parameters, and the hardening rate is controlled by the rate of stable junction formation. By selectively disabling specific junction types in DDD simulations, we find that among the four types of junctions in FCC crystals, glissile junctions make the dominant contribution to the strain hardening rate.

Adaptive Finite Element Method for fractional differential equations using Hierarchical Matrices

A robust and fast solver for the fractional differential equation (FDEs) involving the Riesz fractional derivative is developed using an adaptive finite element method on non-uniform meshes. It is based on the utilization of hierarchical matrices ($\mathcal{H}$-Matrices) for the representation of the stiffness matrix resulting from the finite element discretization of the FDEs. We employ a geometric multigrid method for the solution of the algebraic system of equations. We combine it with an adaptive algorithm based on a posteriori error estimation to deal with general-type singularities arising in the solution of the FDEs. Through various test examples we demonstrate the efficiency of the method and the high-accuracy of the numerical solution even in the presence of singularities. The proposed technique has been verified effectively through fundamental examples including Riesz, Left/Right Riemann-Liouville fractional derivative and, furthermore, it can be readily extended to more general fractional differential equations with different boundary conditions and low-order terms. To the best of our knowledge, there are currently no other methods for FDEs that resolve singularities accurately at linear complexity as the one we propose here.

A Heterogeneous FMM for 2-D Layered Media Helmholtz Equation I: Two & Three Layers Cases

In this paper, we will introduce a new heterogeneous fast multipole method (H-FMM) for 2-D Helmholtz equation in layered media. To illustrate the main algorithm ideas, we focus on the case of two and three layers in this work. The key compression step in the H-FMM is based on a fact that the multipole expansion for the sources of the free-space Green's function can be used also to compress the far field of the sources of the layered-media or domain Green's function, and a similar result exists for the translation operators for the multipole and local expansions. The mathematical error analysis is shown rigorously by an image representation of the Sommerfeld spectral form of the domain Green's function. As a result, in the H-FMM algorithm, both the "multipole-to-multipole" and "local-to-local" translation operators are the same as those in the free-space case, allowing easy adaptation of existing free-space FMM. All the spatially variant information of the domain Green's function are collected into the "multipole-to-local" translations and therefore the FMM becomes "heterogeneous". The compressed representation further reduces the cost of evaluating the domain Green's function when computing the local direct interactions. Preliminary numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the algorithm with much improved performance over some existing methods for inhomogeneous media. Furthermore, we also show that, due to the equivalence between the complex line image representation and Sommerfeld integral representation of layered media Green's function, the new algorithm can be generalized to multi-layered media with minor modification where details for compression formulas, translation operators, and bookkeeping strategies will be addressed in a subsequent paper.

High Order Hierarchical Divergence-free Constrained Transport $H(div)$ Finite Element Method for Magnetic Induction Equation

In this paper, we will use the interior functions of an hierarchical basis for high order $BDM_p$ elements to enforce the divergence-free condition of a magnetic field $B$ approximated by the H(div) $BDM_p$ basis. The resulting constrained finite element method can be used to solve magnetic induction equation in MHD equations. The proposed procedure is based on the fact that the scalar $(p-1)$-th order polynomial space on each element can be decomposed as an orthogonal sum of the subspace defined by the divergence of the interior functions of the $p$-th order $BDM_p$ basis and the constant function. Therefore, the interior functions can be used to remove element-wise all higher order terms except the constant in the divergence error of the finite element solution of $B$-field. The constant terms from each element can be then easily corrected using a first order H(div) basis globally. Numerical results for a 3-D magnetic induction equation show the effectiveness of the proposed method in enforcing divergence-free condition of the magnetic field.

Efficient and accurate computation of electric field dyadic Green's function in layered media

Concise and explicit formulas for dyadic Green's functions, representing the electric and magnetic fields due to a dipole source placed in layered media, are derived in this paper. First, the electric and magnetic fields in the spectral domain for the half space are expressed using Fresnel reflection and transmission coefficients. Each component of electric field in the spectral domain constitutes the spectral Green's function in layered media. The Green's function in the spatial domain is then recovered involving Sommerfeld integrals for each component in the spectral domain. By using Bessel identities, the number of Sommerfeld integrals are reduced, resulting in much simpler and more efficient formulas for numerical implementation compared with previous results. This approach is extended to the three-layer Green's function. In addition, the singular part of the Green's function is naturally separated out so that integral equation methods developed for free space Green's functions can be used with minimal modification. Numerical results are included to show efficiency and accuracy of the derived formulas.
