Fabrication of a multifunctional photonic integrated chip on lithium niobate on insulator using femtosecond laser assisted chemo-mechanical polish

We report fabrication of a multifunctional photonic integrated chip on lithium niobate on insulate (LNOI), which is achieved by femtosecond laser assisted chemo-mechanical polish. We demonstrate a high extinction ratio beam splitter, a 1 * 6 optical switch, and a balanced 3 * 3 interferometer on the fabricated chip by reconfiguring the microelectrode array integrated with the multifunctional photonic circuit.

High-precision measurement of a propagation loss of single-mode optical waveguides on lithium niobate on insulator

We demonstrate fabrication of single-mode optical waveguides on lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) by optical patterning combined with chemo-mechanical polishing. The fabricated LNOI waveguides have a nearly symmetric mode profile of a mode field size of ~2.5 micron (full-width at half maximum). We develop a high-precision measurement approach by which the single mode waveguides are characterized to have a propagation loss of ~0.042 dB/cm.

Singing voice conversion with non-parallel data

Singing voice conversion is a task to convert a song sang by a source singer to the voice of a target singer. In this paper, we propose using a parallel data free, many-to-one voice conversion technique on singing voices. A phonetic posterior feature is first generated by decoding singing voices through a robust Automatic Speech Recognition Engine (ASR). Then, a trained Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) with a Deep Bidirectional Long Short Term Memory (DBLSTM) structure is used to model the mapping from person-independent content to the acoustic features of the target person. F0 and aperiodic are obtained through the original singing voice, and used with acoustic features to reconstruct the target singing voice through a vocoder. In the obtained singing voice, the targeted and sourced singers sound similar. To our knowledge, this is the first study that uses non parallel data to train a singing voice conversion system. Subjective evaluations demonstrate that the proposed method effectively converts singing voices.

Three-dimensional laser printing of macro-scale glass objects at a micro-scale resolution

Three-dimensional (3D) printing has allowed for production of geometrically complex 3D objects with extreme flexibility, which is currently undergoing rapid expansions in terms of materials, functionalities, as well as areas of application. When attempting to print 3D microstructures in glass, femtosecond laser induced chemical etching (FLICE) has proved itself a powerful approach. Here, we demonstrate fabrication of macro-scale 3D glass objects of large heights up to ~3.8 cm with a well-balanced (i.e., lateral vs longitudinal) spatial resolution of ~20 μm. The remarkable accomplishment is achieved by revealing an unexplored regime in the interaction of ultrafast laser pulses with fused silica which results in aberration-free focusing of the laser pulses deeply inside fused silica.

Reinforcement Learning for Uplift Modeling

Uplift modeling aims to directly model the incremental impact of a treatment on an individual response. In this work, we address the problem from a new angle and reformulate it as a Markov Decision Process (MDP). We conducted extensive experiments on both a synthetic dataset and real-world scenarios, and showed that our method can achieve significant improvement over previous methods.

Polarization-insensitive space-selective etching in fused silica induced by picosecond laser irradiation

It is well known that when the fused silica is irradiated with focused femtosecond laser beams, space selective chemical etching can be achieved. The etching rate depends sensitively on the polarization of the laser. Surprisingly, we observe that by chirping the Fourier-transform-limited femtosecond laser pulses to picosecond pulses, the polarization dependence of the etching rate disappears, whereas an efficient etching rate can still be maintained. Observation with a scanning electron microscope reveals that the chirped pulses can induce interconnected nanocracks in the irradiated areas which facilitates efficient introduction of the etchant into the microchannel. The reported technology is of great use for fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) microfluidic systems and glass-based 3D printing.

BandNet: A Neural Network-based, Multi-Instrument Beatles-Style MIDI Music Composition Machine

In this paper, we propose a recurrent neural network (RNN)-based MIDI music composition machine that is able to learn musical knowledge from existing Beatles' songs and generate music in the style of the Beatles with little human intervention. In the learning stage, a sequence of stylistically uniform, multiple-channel music samples was modeled by a RNN. In the composition stage, a short clip of randomly-generated music was used as a seed for the RNN to start music score prediction. To form structured music, segments of generated music from different seeds were concatenated together. To improve the quality and structure of the generated music, we integrated music theory knowledge into the model, such as controlling the spacing of gaps in the vocal melody, normalizing the timing of chord changes, and requiring notes to be related to the song's key (C major, for example). This integration improved the quality of the generated music as verified by a professional composer. We also conducted a subjective listening test that showed our generated music was close to original music by the Beatles in terms of style similarity, professional quality, and interestingness. Generated music samples are at https://goo.gl/uaLXoB.

A Novel Integrated Framework for Learning both Text Detection and Recognition

In this paper, we propose a novel integrated framework for learning both text detection and recognition. For most of the existing methods, detection and recognition are treated as two isolated tasks and trained separately, since parameters of detection and recognition models are different and two models target to optimize their own loss functions during individual training processes. In contrast to those methods, by sharing model parameters, we merge the detection model and recognition model into a single end-to-end trainable model and train the joint model for two tasks simultaneously. The shared parameters not only help effectively reduce the computational load in inference process, but also improve the end-to-end text detection-recognition accuracy. In addition, we design a simpler and faster sequence learning method for the recognition network based on a succession of stacked convolutional layers without any recurrent structure, this is proved feasible and dramatically improves inference speed. Extensive experiments on different datasets demonstrate that the proposed method achieves very promising results.

Low-loss Lithium Niobate on Insulator (LNOI) Waveguides of a 10 cm-length and a Sub-nanometer Surface Roughness

We develop a technique for realizing lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) waveguides of a multi-centimeter-length with a propagation loss as low as 0.027 dB/cm. Our technique relies on patterning a chromium (Cr) thin film coated on the top surface of LNOI into a hard mask with a femtosecond laser followed by the chemo-mechanical polishing for structuring the LNOI into the waveguides. The surface roughness on the waveguides is determined to be 0.452 nm with an atomic force microscope (AFM). The approach is compatible with other surface patterning technologies such as optical and electron beam lithographies or laser direct writing, enabling high-throughput manufacturing of large-scale LNOI-based photonic integrated circuits.

Hybrid CTC-Attention based End-to-End Speech Recognition using Subword Units

In this paper, we present an end-to-end automatic speech recognition system, which successfully employs subword units in a hybrid CTC-Attention based system. The subword units are obtained by the byte-pair encoding (BPE) compression algorithm. Compared to using words as modeling units, using characters or subword units does not suffer from the out-of-vocabulary (OOV) problem. Furthermore, using subword units further offers a capability in modeling longer context than using characters. We evaluate different systems over the LibriSpeech 1000h dataset. The subword-based hybrid CTC-Attention system obtains 6.8% word error rate (WER) on the test_clean subset without any dictionary or external language model. This represents a significant improvement (a 12.8% WER relative reduction) over the character-based hybrid CTC-Attention system.

Latent Dirichlet Allocation for Internet Price War

Internet market makers are always facing intense competitive environment, where personalized price reductions or discounted coupons are provided for attracting more customers. Participants in such a price war scenario have to invest a lot to catch up with other competitors. However, such a huge cost of money may not always lead to an improvement of market share. This is mainly due to a lack of information about others' strategies or customers' willingness when participants develop their strategies. In order to obtain this hidden information through observable data, we study the relationship between companies and customers in the Internet price war. Theoretically, we provide a formalization of the problem as a stochastic game with imperfect and incomplete information. Then we develop a variant of Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) to infer latent variables under the current market environment, which represents the preferences of customers and strategies of competitors. To our best knowledge, it is the first time that LDA is applied to game scenario. We conduct simulated experiments where our LDA model exhibits a significant improvement on finding strategies in the Internet price war by including all available market information of the market maker's competitors. And the model is applied to an open dataset for real business. Through comparisons on the likelihood of prediction for users' behavior and distribution distance between inferred opponent's strategy and the real one, our model is shown to be able to provide a better understanding for the market environment. Our work marks a successful learning method to infer latent information in the environment of price war by the LDA modeling, and sets an example for related competitive applications to follow.

Electronic quantum coherence induced by strong field molecular ionization

The existence of electronic coherence can fundamentally change the scenario of nonlinear interaction of light with quantum systems such as atoms and molecules, which, however, has escaped from observation in the investigations of strong field nonlinear optics in the past several decades. Here, we report on the generation of electronic quantum coherence by strong field ionization of nitrogen molecules in an intense 800 nm laser field. The coherence is experimentally revealed by observing a resonant four-wave mixing process in which the two pump pulses centered at 800 nm and 1580 nm wavelengths are temporally separated from each other. The experimental observation is further reproduced by calculating the nonlinear polarization response of N_2^+ ions using a three-level quantum model. Our result suggests that strong field ionization provides a unique approach to generating a fully coherent molecular wavepacket encapsulating the rotational, vibrational, and electronic states.

Highly-efficient second and third harmonic generation in a monocrystalline lithium niobate microresonator

Nonlinear optics in whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microresonators have attracted much attention. Owing to strong confinement of the light in a small volume, a WGM microresonator can dramatically boost the strength of light field, giving rise to enhancement of the nonlinear interactions of light with the resonator material. Here, we demonstrate highly efficient second harmonic generation (SHG) and third harmonic generation (THG) in an on-chip monocrystalline lithium niobate (LN) microresonator. Benefitting from a cyclic phase matching scheme for the transverse-electric WGMs, nonlinear wavelength conversion utilizing the largest second-order nonlinear coefficient d33, which has not been demonstrated until now despite of its obvious advantage, is successfully achieved in an X-cut LN microresonator. We obtain high conversion efficiencies in not only the SHG (3.8% mW^-1) but also the THG (0.3% mW^-2) realized through a cascaded sum-frequency process. Our results represent a major step toward the classical and quantum photonic integrated circuits.

Aberration-free three dimensional micromachining in glass with spatiotemporally shaped femtosecond laser pulses

We observe that focusing a femtosecond laser beam simultaneously chirped in time and space domains in glass can efficiently suppress the optical aberration caused by the refractive index mismatch at the interface of air and the glass sample. We then demonstrate three dimensional microprocessing in glass with a nearly invariant spatial resolution for a large range of penetration depth between 0.25 mm and 9 mm without any aberration correction.

IncepText: A New Inception-Text Module with Deformable PSROI Pooling for Multi-Oriented Scene Text Detection

Incidental scene text detection, especially for multi-oriented text regions, is one of the most challenging tasks in many computer vision applications. Different from the common object detection task, scene text often suffers from a large variance of aspect ratio, scale, and orientation. To solve this problem, we propose a novel end-to-end scene text detector IncepText from an instance-aware segmentation perspective. We design a novel Inception-Text module and introduce deformable PSROI pooling to deal with multi-oriented text detection. Extensive experiments on ICDAR2015, RCTW-17, and MSRA-TD500 datasets demonstrate our method's superiority in terms of both effectiveness and efficiency. Our proposed method achieves 1st place result on ICDAR2015 challenge and the state-of-the-art performance on other datasets. Moreover, we have released our implementation as an OCR product which is available for public access.

High-throughput high-resolution multi-scale three dimensional laser printing

Throughput and resolution are both of critical importance for modern manufacturing, however, they are usually contradictory with each other. Here, a high-throughput high-resolution three dimensional (3D) printing is demonstrated by incorporating a simultaneous spatiotemporal focusing (SSTF) scheme in two-photon polymerization (TPP). Remarkably, the SSTF can ensure generation of a spherical focal spot of which the size depends linearly on the laser power. Thus, the resolution can be continuously adjusted from sub-10 μm to ~40 μm by only increasing the laser power. A multi-scale 3D structure is fabricated using this technique, for which the regions of coarse and fine feature sizes are produced at high and low resolutions, respectively.

Suppression of bend loss in writing of three-dimensional optical waveguides with femtosecond laser pulses

We provide a solution toward compact and low-loss three dimensional (3D) photonic circuits by femtosecond laser direct writing of 3D waveguides in fused silica. We suppress the bend loss by sandwiching the waveguide between a pair of walls formed by internal modification of glass. Our method allows to reduce the bend loss of a curved waveguide with a bending radius of 15 mm by more than one order of magnitude.
