Studies on the time response distribution of Insigh}-HXMT/LE

The Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT) named Insight is China's first X-ray astronomical satellite. The Low Energy X-ray Telescope (LE) is one of its main payloads onboard. The detectors of LE adopt swept charge device CCD236 with L-shaped transfer electrodes. Charges in detection area are read out continuously along specific paths, which leads to a time response distribution of photons readout time. We designed a long exposure readout mode to measure the time response distribution. In this mode, CCD236 firstly performs exposure without readout, then all charges generated in preceding exposure phase are read out completely. Through analysis of the photons readout time in this mode, we obtained the probability distribution of photons readout time.

Data-based wind disaster climate identification algorithm and extreme wind speed prediction

An extreme wind speed estimation method that considers wind hazard climate types is critical for design wind load calculation for building structures affected by mixed climates. However, it is very difficult to obtain wind hazard climate types from meteorological data records, because they restrict the application of extreme wind speed estimation in mixed climates. This paper first proposes a wind hazard type identification algorithm based on a numerical pattern recognition method that utilizes feature extraction and generalization. Next, it compares six commonly used machine learning models using K-fold cross-validation. Finally, it takes meteorological data from three locations near the southeast coast of China as examples to examine the algorithm performance. Based on classification results, the extreme wind speeds calculated based on mixed wind hazard types is compared with those obtained from conventional methods, and the effects on structural design for different return periods are discussed.

Insight-HXMT observations of Swift J0243.6+6124 during its 2017-2018 outburst

The recently discovered neutron star transient Swift J0243.6+6124 has been monitored by {\it the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope} ({\it Insight-\rm HXMT). Based on the obtained data, we investigate the broadband spectrum of the source throughout the outburst. We estimate the broadband flux of the source and search for possible cyclotron line in the broadband spectrum. No evidence of line-like features is, however, found up to $\rm 150~keV$. In the absence of any cyclotron line in its energy spectrum, we estimate the magnetic field of the source based on the observed spin evolution of the neutron star by applying two accretion torque models. In both cases, we get consistent results with $B\rm \sim 10^{13}~G$, $D\rm \sim 6~kpc$ and peak luminosity of $\rm >10^{39}~erg~s^{-1}$ which makes the source the first Galactic ultraluminous X-ray source hosting a neutron star.

Binary Discrimination in Quantum Systems via Hypothesis Testing

We investigate the discrimination of two candidates of an unknown parameter in quantum systems with continuous weak measurement, inspired by the application of hypothesis testing in distinguish-ing two Hamiltonians [Kiilerich and Mølmer, Phys. Rev. A, 98, 022103 (2018)]. Based on the measurement output and stochastic master equation, temporal evolutions of posterior probabilities of two hypotheses are given by Bayes' formula. The Bayes criterion is presented by the likelihood ratio conditioned on the outcome of measurements. Different from the calculation method based on maximum a posteriori criterion, the Bayes criterion based method for calculating the average prob-ability of making errors is more suitable and efficient in general situation of binary discrimination. Finally, an example of distinguishing two candidate Hamiltonians is given and the running times of calculating the average probability of error under the Bayes criterion and the maximum a posteriori criterion are compared to illustrate the feasibility of the hypothesis testing in quickly distinguishing two candidates of the parameter to be estimated.

ECG Identification under Exercise and Rest Situations via Various Learning Methods

As the advancement of information security, human recognition as its core technology, has absorbed an increasing amount of attention in the past few years. A myriad of biometric features including fingerprint, face, iris, have been applied to security systems, which are occasionally considered vulnerable to forgery and spoofing attacks. Due to the difficulty of being fabricated, electrocardiogram (ECG) has attracted much attention. Though many works have shown the excellent human identification provided by ECG, most current ECG human identification (ECGID) researches only focus on rest situation. In this manuscript, we overcome the oversimplification of previous researches and evaluate the performance under both exercise and rest situations, especially the influence of exercise on ECGID. By applying various existing learning methods to our ECG dataset, we find that current methods which can well support the identification of individuals under rests, do not suffice to present satisfying ECGID performance under exercise situations, therefore exposing the deficiency of existing ECG identification methods.

Covariance Matrix Estimation from Linearly-Correlated Gaussian Samples

Covariance matrix estimation concerns the problem of estimating the covariance matrix from a collection of samples, which is of extreme importance in many applications. Classical results have shown that $O(n)$ samples are sufficient to accurately estimate the covariance matrix from $n$-dimensional independent Gaussian samples. However, in many practical applications, the received signal samples might be correlated, which makes the classical analysis inapplicable. In this paper, we develop a non-asymptotic analysis for the covariance matrix estimation from correlated Gaussian samples. Our theoretical results show that the error bounds are determined by the signal dimension $n$, the sample size $m$, and the shape parameter of the distribution of the correlated sample covariance matrix. Particularly, when the shape parameter is a class of Toeplitz matrices (which is of great practical interest), $O(n)$ samples are also sufficient to faithfully estimate the covariance matrix from correlated samples. Simulations are provided to verify the correctness of the theoretical results.

The large-scale environment from cosmological simulations II: The redshift evolution and distributions of baryons

Following Cui et al. 2018 (hereafter Paper I) on the classification of large-scale environments (LSE) at z = 0, we push our analysis to higher redshifts and study the evolution of LSE and the baryon distributions in them. Our aim is to investigate how baryons affect the LSE as a function of redshift. In agreement with Paper I, the baryon models have negligible effect on the LSE over all investigated redshifts. We further validate the conclusion obtained in Paper I that the gas web is an unbiased tracer of total matter -- even better at high redshifts. By separating the gas mainly by temperature, we find that about 40 per cent of gas is in the so-called warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM). This fraction of gas mass in the WHIM decreases with redshift, especially from z = 1 (29 per cent) to z = 2.1 (10 per cent). By separating the whole WHIM gas mass into the four large-scale environments (i.e. voids, sheets, filaments, and knots), we find that about half of the WHIM gas is located in filaments. Although the total gas mass in WHIM decreases with redshift, the WHIM mass fractions in the different LSE seem unchanged.

Force Tracking in Cavity Optomechanics with a Two-Level Quantum System by Kalman Filtering

This paper investigates waveform estimation (tracking) of the time-varying force in a two-level optomechanical system with backaction noise by Kalman filtering. It is assumed that the backaction and measurement noises are Gaussian and white. By discretizing the continuous-time optomechanical system, the state of the resulting system can be estimated by the unbiased minimum variance Kalman filtering. Then an estimator of the time-varying force is obtained, provided that the external force is also in discrete time. Furthermore, the accuracy of the force estimation, described by the mean squared error, is derived theoretically. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed algorithm is illustrated by comparing the theoretical accuracy with the numerical accuracy in a numerical example.

Performance comparison of an AI-based Adaptive Learning System in China

Adaptive learning systems stand apart from traditional learning systems by offering a personalized learning experience to students according to their different knowledge states. Adaptive systems collect and analyse students' behavior data, update learner profiles, then accordingly provide timely individualized feedback to each student. Such interactions between the learning system and students can improve the engagement of students and the efficiency of learning. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of an adaptive learning system, "Yixue Squirrel AI" (or Yixue), on English and math learning in middle school. The effectiveness of the Yixue's math and English learning systems is respectively compared against (1) traditional classroom math instruction conducted by expert human teachers and (2) BOXFiSH, another adaptive learning platform for English language learning. Results suggest that students achieved better performance using Yixue adaptive learning system than both traditional classroom instruction by expert teachers and another adaptive learning platform.

Recovery of Structured Signals From Corrupted Non-Linear Measurements

This paper studies the problem of recovering a structured signal from a relatively small number of corrupted non-linear measurements. Assuming that signal and corruption are contained in some structure-promoted set, we suggest an extended Lasso to disentangle signal and corruption. We also provide conditions under which this recovery procedure can successfully reconstruct both signal and corruption.

Geometric Measure of non-Commuting Simultaneous Measurement based on K-Means Clustering

Considering the simultaneous measurement of non-commuting observables, we define a geometric measure for the degree of non-commuting behavior of quantum measurements coming from the initial and final states of the measurements. The rationality of our geometric measure is demonstrated and the application of it is presented. The connection between our measure and Heisenberg's uncertainty principle is discussed as well. Our work deepens the understanding of quantum non-commuting measurement.

The enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry mission - eXTP

In this paper we present the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry mission - eXTP. eXTP is a space science mission designed to study fundamental physics under extreme conditions of density, gravity and magnetism. The mission aims at determining the equation of state of matter at supra-nuclear density, measuring effects of QED, and understanding the dynamics of matter in strong-field gravity. In addition to investigating fundamental physics, eXTP will be a very powerful observatory for astrophysics that will provide observations of unprecedented quality on a variety of galactic and extragalactic objects. In particular, its wide field monitoring capabilities will be highly instrumental to detect the electro-magnetic counterparts of gravitational wave sources. The paper provides a detailed description of: (1) the technological and technical aspects, and the expected performance of the instruments of the scientific payload; (2) the elements and functions of the mission, from the spacecraft to the ground segment.

All-passive, transformable optical mapping (ATOM) near-eye display

We present an all-passive, transformable optical mapping (ATOM) near-eye display based on the "human-centric design" principle. By employing a diffractive optical element, a distorted grating, the ATOM display can project different portions of a 2D display screen to various depths, rendering a real 3D image with correct focus cues. Thanks to its all-passive optical mapping architecture, the ATOM display features a reduced form factor and low power consumption. Moreover, the system can readily switch between a real-3D and a high-resolution 2D display mode, providing task-tailored viewing experience for a variety of VR/AR applications.

LSST: from Science Drivers to Reference Design and Anticipated Data Products

(Abridged) We describe here the most ambitious survey currently planned in the optical, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). A vast array of science will be enabled by a single wide-deep-fast sky survey, and LSST will have unique survey capability in the faint time domain. The LSST design is driven by four main science themes: probing dark energy and dark matter, taking an inventory of the Solar System, exploring the transient optical sky, and mapping the Milky Way. LSST will be a wide-field ground-based system sited at Cerro Pachón in northern Chile. The telescope will have an 8.4 m (6.5 m effective) primary mirror, a 9.6 deg$^2$ field of view, and a 3.2 Gigapixel camera. The standard observing sequence will consist of pairs of 15-second exposures in a given field, with two such visits in each pointing in a given night. With these repeats, the LSST system is capable of imaging about 10,000 square degrees of sky in a single filter in three nights. The typical 5$σ$ point-source depth in a single visit in $r$ will be $\sim 24.5$ (AB). The project is in the construction phase and will begin regular survey operations by 2022. The survey area will be contained within 30,000 deg$^2$ with $δ<+34.5^\circ$, and will be imaged multiple times in six bands, $ugrizy$, covering the wavelength range 320--1050 nm. About 90\% of the observing time will be devoted to a deep-wide-fast survey mode which will uniformly observe a 18,000 deg$^2$ region about 800 times (summed over all six bands) during the anticipated 10 years of operations, and yield a coadded map to $r\sim27.5$. The remaining 10\% of the observing time will be allocated to projects such as a Very Deep and Fast time domain survey. The goal is to make LSST data products, including a relational database of about 32 trillion observations of 40 billion objects, available to the public and scientists around the world.

Multi-objective Optimization in Quantum Parameter Estimation

We investigate quantum parameter estimation based on linear and Kerr-type nonlinear controls in an open quantum system, and consider the dissipation rate as an unknown parameter. We show that while the precision of parameter estimation is improved, it usually introduces a significant deformation to the system state. Moreover, we propose a multi-objective model to optimize the two conflicting objectives: (1) maximizing the Fisher information, improving the parameter estimation precision, and (2) minimizing the deformation of the system state, which maintains its fidelity. Finally, simulations of a simplified ε-constrained model demonstrate the feasibility of the Hamiltonian control in improving the precision of the quantum parameter estimation.

Identifying the Mislabeled Training Samples of ECG Signals using Machine Learning

The classification accuracy of electrocardiogram signal is often affected by diverse factors in which mislabeled training samples issue is one of the most influential problems. In order to mitigate this negative effect, the method of cross validation is introduced to identify the mislabeled samples. The method utilizes the cooperative advantages of different classifiers to act as a filter for the training samples. The filter removes the mislabeled training samples and retains the correctly labeled ones with the help of 10-fold cross validation. Consequently, a new training set is provided to the final classifiers to acquire higher classification accuracies. Finally, we numerically show the effectiveness of the proposed method with the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database.

Modelling and Control of Quantum Measurement Induced Backaction in Double Quantum Dots

Quantum measurements disturb the quantum system being measured, and this is known as measurement-induced backaction. In this work, we consider a double quantum dot monitored by a nearby quantum point contact where the measurement-induced backaction plays an important role. Taking advantage of the quantum master equation approach, we calculate the tunnelling current, and propose a simple feedbackcontrol law to realize and stabilize the tunnelling current. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulations show that the feedback control law can make the current quickly convergent to the desired value.

Real-time quantum state estimation in circuit QED via Bayesian approach

Using a circuit QED device, we present a theoretical study of real-time quantum state estimation via quantum Bayesian approach. Suitable conditions under which the Bayesian approach can accurately update the density matrix of the qubit are analyzed. We also consider the correlation between some basic and physically meaningful parameters of the circuit QED and the performance of the Bayesian approach. Our results advance the understanding of quantum Bayesian approach and pave the way to study quantum feedback control and adaptive control.
