Recovery of Structured Signals with Prior Information via Maximizing Correlation

This paper considers the problem of recovering a structured signal from a relatively small number of noisy measurements with the aid of a similar signal which is known beforehand. We propose a new approach to integrate prior information into the standard recovery procedure by maximizing the correlation between the prior knowledge and the desired signal. We then establish performance guarantees (in terms of the number of measurements) for the proposed method under sub-Gaussian measurements. Specific structured signals including sparse vectors, block-sparse vectors, and low-rank matrices are also analyzed. Furthermore, we present an interesting geometrical interpretation for the proposed procedure. Our results demonstrate that if prior information is good enough, then the proposed approach can (remarkably) outperform the standard recovery procedure. Simulations are provided to verify our results.

Insight-HXMT observations of the first binary neutron star merger GW170817

Finding the electromagnetic (EM) counterpart of binary compact star merger, especially the binary neutron star (BNS) merger, is critically important for gravitational wave (GW) astronomy, cosmology and fundamental physics. On Aug. 17, 2017, Advanced LIGO and \textit{Fermi}/GBM independently triggered the first BNS merger, GW170817, and its high energy EM counterpart, GRB 170817A, respectively, resulting in a global observation campaign covering gamma-ray, X-ray, UV, optical, IR, radio as well as neutrinos. The High Energy X-ray telescope (HE) onboard \textit{Insight}-HXMT (Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope) is the unique high-energy gamma-ray telescope that monitored the entire GW localization area and especially the optical counterpart (SSS17a/AT2017gfo) with very large collection area ($\sim$1000 cm$^2$) and microsecond time resolution in 0.2-5 MeV. In addition, \textit{Insight}-HXMT quickly implemented a Target of Opportunity (ToO) observation to scan the GW localization area for potential X-ray emission from the GW source. Although it did not detect any significant high energy (0.2-5 MeV) radiation from GW170817, its observation helped to confirm the unexpected weak and soft nature of GRB 170817A. Meanwhile, \textit{Insight}-HXMT/HE provides one of the most stringent constraints (~10$^{-7}$ to 10$^{-6}$ erg/cm$^2$/s) for both GRB170817A and any other possible precursor or extended emissions in 0.2-5 MeV, which help us to better understand the properties of EM radiation from this BNS merger. Therefore the observation of \textit{Insight}-HXMT constitutes an important chapter in the full context of multi-wavelength and multi-messenger observation of this historical GW event.

Quantum parameter estimation via dispersive measurement in circuit QED

We investigate the quantum parameter estimation in circuit quantum electrodynamics via dispersive measurement. Based on the Metropolis Hastings (MH) algorithm and the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) integration, a new algorithm is proposed to calculate the Fisher information by the stochastic master equation for unknown parameter estimation. Here, the Fisher information is expressed in the form of log-likehood functions and further approximated by the MCMC integration. Numerical results demonstrate that the single evolution of the Fisher information can probably approach the quantum Fisher information. The same phenomenon is observed in the ensemble evolution in the short time interval. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Bufferless transmission in complex networks

Complex bufferless networks such as on-chip networks and optical burst switching networks haven't been paid enough attention in network science. In complex bufferless networks, the store and forward mechanism is not applicable, since the network nodes are not allowed to buffer data packets. In this paper, we study the data transmission process in complex bufferless networks from the perspective of network science. Specifically, we use the Price model to generate the underlying network topological structures. We propose a delivery queue based deflection mechanism, which accompanies the efficient routing protocol, to transmit data packets in bufferless networks. We investigate the average deflection times, packets loss rate, average arrival time, and how the network topological structure and some other factors affect these transmission performances. Our work provides some clues for the architecture and routing design of bufferless networks.

Optical Mapping Near-eye Three-dimensional Display with Correct Focus Cues

We present an optical mapping near-eye (OMNI) three-dimensional display method for wearable devices. By dividing a display screen into different sub-panels and optically mapping them to various depths, we create a multiplane volumetric image with correct focus cues for depth perception. The resultant system can drive the eye's accommodation to the distance that is consistent with binocular stereopsis, thereby alleviating the vergence-accommodation conflict, the primary cause for eye fatigue and discomfort. Compared with the previous methods, the OMNI display offers prominent advantages in adaptability, image dynamic range, and refresh rate.

Compressed Sensing with Prior Information via Maximizing Correlation

Compressed sensing (CS) with prior information concerns the problem of reconstructing a sparse signal with the aid of a similar signal which is known beforehand. We consider a new approach to integrate the prior information into CS via maximizing the correlation between the prior knowledge and the desired signal. We then present a geometric analysis for the proposed method under sub-Gaussian measurements. Our results reveal that if the prior information is good enough, then the proposed approach can improve the performance of the standard CS. Simulations are provided to verify our results.

Comparisons of Jet Properties between GeV Radio Galaxies and Blazars

We compile a sample of spectral energy distribution (SED) of 12 GeV radio galaxies (RGs), including eight FR I RGs and four FR II RGs. These SEDs can be represented with the one-zone leptonic model. No significant unification as expected in the unification model is found for the derived jet parameters between FR I RGs and BL Lacertae objects (BL Lacs) and between FR II RGs and flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs). However, on average FR I RGs have the larger gamma_b (break Lorentz factor of electrons) and lower B (magnetic field strength) than FR II RGs, analogous to the differences between BL Lacs and FSRQs. The derived Doppler factors (delta) of RGs are on average smaller than that of balzars, which is consistent with the unification model that RGs are the misaligned parent populations of blazars with smaller delta. On the basis of jet parameters from SED fits, we calculate their jet powers and the powers carried by each component, and compare their jet compositions and radiation efficiencies with blazars. Most of the RG jets may be dominated by particles, like BL Lacs, not FSRQs. However, the jets of RGs with higher radiation efficiencies tend to have higher jet magnetization. A strong anticorrelation between synchrotron peak frequency and jet power is observed for the GeV RGs and blazars in both the observer and co-moving frames, indicating that the "sequence" behavior among blazars, together with the GeV RGs, may be dominated by the jet power intrinsically.

Information transmission on hybrid networks

Many real-world communication networks often have hybrid nature with both fixed nodes and moving modes, such as the mobile phone networks mainly composed of fixed base stations and mobile phones. In this paper, we discuss the information transmission process on the hybrid networks with both fixed and mobile nodes. The fixed nodes (base stations) are connected as a spatial lattice on the plane forming the information-carrying backbone, while the mobile nodes (users), which are the sources and destinations of information packets, connect to their current nearest fixed nodes respectively to deliver and receive information packets. We observe the phase transition of traffic load in the hybrid network when the packet generation rate goes from below and then above a critical value, which measures the network capacity of packets delivery. We obtain the optimal speed of moving nodes leading to the maximum network capacity. We further improve the network capacity by rewiring the fixed nodes and by considering the current load of fixed nodes during packets transmission. Our purpose is to optimize the network capacity of hybrid networks from the perspective of network science, and provide some insights for the construction of future communication infrastructures.

Similarity of Jet Radiation between Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars and GeV Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies: A Universal $δ$-$L_{\rm c}$ Correlation

By modeling the broadband spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of a typical flat spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ, 3C 279) and two GeV narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s, PMN J0948+0022 and 1H 0323+342) in different flux stages with the one-zone leptonic models, we find a universal correlation between their Doppler factors ($δ$) and peak luminosities ($L_{\rm c}$) of external Compton scattering bumps. Compiling a combined sample of FSRQs and GeV NLS1s, it is found that both FSRQs and GeV NLS1s in different stages and in different sources well follow the same $δ$-$L_{\rm c}$ correlation. This indicates that the variations of observed luminosities may be essentially due to the Doppler boosting effect. And the universal $δ$-$L_{\rm c}$ relation between FSRQs and GeV NLS1s in different stages may be further evidence that the particle acceleration and radiation mechanisms for the two kinds of sources are similar. In addition, by replacing $L_{\rm c}$ with the observed luminosity in the Fermi/LAT band ($L_{\rm LAT}$), this correlation holds, and it may serve as an empirical indicator of $δ$. We estimate the $δ$ values with $L_{\rm LAT}$ for 484 FSRQs in the Fermi/LAT Catalog and they range from 3 to 41, with a median of 16, which are statistically consistent with the values derived by other methods.

The Point Spread Function Reconstruction by Using Moffatlets - I

The shear measurement is a crucial task in the current and the future weak lensing survey projects. And the reconstruction of the point spread function(PSF) is one of the essential steps. In this work, we present three different methods, including Gaussianlets, Moffatlets and EMPCA to quantify their efficiency on PSF reconstruction using four sets of simulated LSST star images. Gaussianlets and Moffatlets are two different sets of basis functions whose profiles are based on Gaussian and Moffat functions respectively. Expectation Maximization(EM) PCA is a statistical method performing iterative procedure to find principal components of an ensemble of star images. Our tests show that: 1) Moffatlets always perform better than Gaussianlets. 2) EMPCA is more compact and flexible, but the noise existing in the Principal Components (PCs) will contaminate the size and ellipticity of PSF while Moffatlets keeps them very well.

A Coherent Integration Method Based on Radon Non-uniform FRFT for Random Pulse Repetition Interval (RPRI) Radar

To solve the range cell migration (RCM) and spectrum spread during the integration time induced by the motion of a target, this paper proposes a new coherent integration method based on Radon non-uniform FRFT (NUFRFT) for random pulse repetition interval (RPRI) radar. In this method, RCM is eliminated via searching in the motion parameters space and the spectrum spread is resolved by using NUFRFT. Comparisons with other popular methods, moving target detection (MTD), Radon-Fourier transform (RFT), and Radon-Fractional Fourier Transform (RFRFT) are performed. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method can detect the moving target even in low SNR scenario and is superior to the other two methods.

Bounded link prediction for very large networks

Evaluation of link prediction methods is a hard task in very large complex networks because of the inhibitive computational cost. By setting a lower bound of the number of common neighbors (CN), we propose a new framework to efficiently and precisely evaluate the performances of CN-based similarity indices in link prediction for very large heterogeneous networks. Specifically, we propose a fast algorithm based on the parallel computing scheme to obtain all the node pairs with CN values larger than the lower bound. Furthermore, we propose a new measurement, called self-predictability, to quantify the performance of the CN-based similarity indices in link prediction, which on the other side can indicate the link predictability of a network.

Finite-key analysis for measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution

Quantum key distribution promises unconditionally secure communications. However, as practical devices tend to deviate from their specifications, the security of some practical systems is no longer valid. In particular, an adversary can exploit imperfect detectors to learn a large part of the secret key, even though the security proof claims otherwise. Recently, a practical approach---measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution---has been proposed to solve this problem. However, so far its security has only been fully proven under the assumption that the legitimate users of the system have unlimited resources. Here we fill this gap and provide a rigorous security proof against general attacks in the finite-key regime. This is obtained by applying large deviation theory, specifically the Chernoff bound, to perform parameter estimation. For the first time we demonstrate the feasibility of long-distance implementations of measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution within a reasonable time-frame of signal transmission.

Parameter Estimation of Ground Moving Targets Based on SKT-DLVT Processing

It is well known that the motion of a ground moving target may induce the range cell migration, spectrum spread and velocity ambiguity during the imaging time, which makes the image smeared. To eliminate the influence of these factors on image focusing, a novel method for parameter estimation of ground moving targets, known as SKT-DLVT, is proposed in this paper. In this method, the segmental keystone transform (SKT) is used to correct the range walk of targets simultaneously, and a new transform, namely, Doppler Lv's transform (LVT) is applied on the azimuth signal to estimate the parameters. Theoretical analysis confirms that no interpolation is needed for the proposed method and the targets can be well focused within limited searching range of the ambiguity number. The proposed method is capable of obtaining the accurate parameter estimates efficiently in the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) scenario with low computational burden and memory cost, making it suitable to be applied in memory-limited and real-time processing systems. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by both simulated and real data.

A New Parameter Estimation Algorithm Based on Sub-band Dual Frequency Conjugate LVT

A new parameter estimation algorithm, known as Sub-band Dual Frequency Conjugate LVT (SDFC-LVT), is proposed for the ground moving targets. This algorithm first constructs two sub-band signals with different central frequencies. After that, the two signals are shifted by different values in frequency domain and a new signal is constructed by multiplying one with the conjugate of the other. Finally, Keystone transform and LVT operation are performed on the constructed signal to attain the estimates. The cross-term and the performance of the proposed method are analyzed in detail. Since the equivalent carrier frequency is reduced greatly, the proposed method is capable of obtaining the accurate parameter estimates and resolving the problem of ambiguity which invalidates Keystone transform. It is search-free and can compensate the range walk of multiple targets simultaneously, thereby reducing the computational burden. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by both simulated and real data.

Longest-path attacks on complex networks

We investigate the longest-path attacks on complex networks. Specifically, we remove approximately the longest simple path from a network iteratively until there are no paths left in the network. We propose two algorithms, the random augmenting approach (RPA) and the Hamilton-path based approach (HPA), for finding the approximately longest simple path in a network. Results demonstrate that steps of longest-path attacks increase with network density linearly for random networks, while exponentially increasing for scale-free networks. The more homogeneous the degree distribution is, the more fragile the network, which is totally different from the previous results of node or edge attacks. HPA is generally more efficient than RPA in the longest-path attacks of complex networks. These findings further help us understand the vulnerability of complex systems, better protect complex systems, and design more tolerant complex systems.

Measuring the gas clumping in Abell 133

This paper continues a series in which we developed a non-parametric method to measure inhomogeneities in the gas distribution from X-ray observations of galaxy clusters. In this work, we apply our method to Chandra X-ray observations of Abell 133 and present the determination of the gas clumping factor from X-ray cluster data. We find that the gas clumping factor in Abell 133 increases with radius and reaches $\sim 2-3$ at $0.9\,R_{200}$. This is in good agreement with the predictions of hydrodynamical simulations and our previous determination. We then observe a general trend of steepening in the radial profiles of the clumping-corrected gas density beyond $0.3\, R_{200}$, with a logarithmic slope of $\sim 2.6$ at $0.9\,R_{200}$. The observed density profiles appear to be flatter compared to simulations, but in agreement with previous observational findings. In addition, we observe that the measured temperature decreases steadily with radius toward the outskirts of A133, while the entropy increases monotonically with radius, gently flattening in the outer volumes. With respect to theoretical predictions from pure gravitational collapse, the results presented here point to an entropy excess in the central regions, which extends out to large radii. These results suggest that gas inhomogeneities should be treated properly when interpreting X-ray measurements in the envelope of galaxy clusters. We finally discuss how the brightness distribution keeps a record of the large-scale structures formation scenario, providing a snapshot of the 'melting pot' in the virialization region.

Non-parametric method for measuring gas inhomogeneities from X-ray observations of galaxy clusters

We present a non-parametric method to measure inhomogeneities in the intracluster medium (ICM) from X-ray observations of galaxy clusters. Analysing mock Chandra X-ray observations of simulated clusters, we show that our new method enables the accurate recovery of the 3D gas density and gas clumping factor profiles out to large radii of galaxy clusters. We then apply this method to Chandra X-ray observations of Abell 1835 and present the first determination of the gas clumping factor from the X-ray cluster data. We find that the gas clumping factor in Abell 1835 increases with radius and reaches ~2-3 at r=R_{200}. This is in good agreement with the predictions of hydrodynamical simulations, but it is significantly below the values inferred from recent Suzaku observations. We further show that the radially increasing gas clumping factor causes flattening of the derived entropy profile of the ICM and affects physical interpretation of the cluster gas structure, especially at the large cluster-centric radii. Our new technique should be useful for improving our understanding of the cluster structure and to advance the use of galaxy clusters as cosmological probes, by helping to exploit rich data sets provided by Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray space telescopes.
