Cross-phase modulation instability in mode-locked laser based on reduced graphene oxide

Cross-phase modulation instability (XPMI) is experimentally observed in a fiber ring cavity with net normal dispersion and mode-locked by long fiber taper. The taper is deposited with reduced graphene oxide, which can decrease the threshold of XPMI due to the enhanced nonlinearity realized by 8 mm evanescent field interaction length and strong mode confinement. Experimental results indicate that the phase matching conditions in two polarization directions are different, and sidebands with different intensities are generated. This phase matching condition can be satisfied even the polarization state of the laser varies greatly under different pump strengths.

Complete achromatic optical switching between two waveguides with a sign flip of the phase mismatch

We present a two-waveguide coupler which, realizes complete achromatic all-optical switching. The coupling of the waveguides has a hyperbolic-secant shape while the phase mismatch has a sign flip at the maximum of the coupling. We derive an analytic solution for the electric field propagation using coupled mode theory and show that the light switching is robust again small-to-moderate variations in the coupling and phase mismatch. Thus, we realize an achromatic light switching between the two waveguides. We further consider the extended case of three coupled waveguides in an array and pay special attention to the case of equal achromatic light beam splitting.

Quantum bit commitment with cheat sensitive binding and approximate sealing

This paper proposes a cheat sensitive quantum bit commitment (CSQBC) scheme based on single photons, in which Alice commits a bit to Bob. Here, Bob only can cheat the committed bit with probability close to $0$ with the increasing of used single photons' amount. And if Alice altered her committed bit after commitment phase, she will be detected with probability close to $1$ with the increasing of used single photons' amount. The scheme is easy to be realized with nowadays technology.

Hidden Quantum Markov Models and Open Quantum Systems with Instantaneous Feedback

Hidden Markov Models are widely used in classical computer science to model stochastic processes with a wide range of applications. This paper concerns the quantum analogues of these machines --- so-called Hidden Quantum Markov Models (HQMMs). Using the properties of Quantum Physics, HQMMs are able to generate more complex random output sequences than their classical counterparts, even when using the same number of internal states. They are therefore expected to find applications as quantum simulators of stochastic processes. Here, we emphasise that open quantum systems with instantaneous feedback are examples of HQMMs, thereby identifying a novel application of quantum feedback control.

Post-processing of the oblivious key in quantum private queries

Quantum private query (QPQ) is a kind of quantum protocols to protect both users' privacy in their communication. There is an interesting example, that is, Alice wants to buy one item from Bob's database, which is composed of a quantity of valuable messages. QPQ protocol is the communication procedure ensuring that Alice can get only one item from Bob, and at the same time, Bob cannot know which one was taken by Alice. Owing to its practicability, quantum-key-distribution-based QPQ has draw much attention in recent years. However, the post-processing of the key in such protocols, called oblivious key, remains far from being satisfactorily known. Especially, the error correction method for such special key is still missing. Here we focus on the post-processing of the oblivious key, including both dilution and error correction. On the one hand, we demonstrate that the previous dilution method, which greatly reduces the communication complexity, will bring Alice the chance to illegally obtain much additional information about Bob's database. Simulations show that by very limited queries Alice can obtain the whole database. On the other hand, we present an effective error-correction method for the oblivious key, which completes its post-processing and makes such QPQ more practical.

Allocating Indivisible Resources under Price Rigidities in Polynomial Time

In many realistic problems of allocating resources, economy efficiency must be taken into consideration together with social equality, and price rigidities are often made according to some economic and social needs. We study the computational issues of dynamic mechanisms for selling multiple indivisible items under price rigidities. We propose a polynomial algorithm that can be used to find over-demanded sets of items, and then introduce a dynamic mechanism with rationing to discover constrained Walrasian equilibria under price rigidities in polynomial time. We also address the computation of sellers' expected profits and items' expected prices, and discuss strategical issues in the sense of expected profits.

A Parallel Elicitation-Free Protocol for Allocating Indivisible Goods

We study the problem of allocating a set of indivisible goods to multiple agents. Recent work [Bouveret and Lang, 2011] focused on allocating goods in a sequential way, and studied what is the "best" sequence of agents to pick objects based on utilitarian or egalitarian criterion. In this paper, we propose a parallel elicitation-free protocol for allocating indivisible goods. In every round of the allocation process, some agents will be selected (according to some policy) to report their preferred objects among those that remain, and every reported object will be allocated randomly to an agent reporting it. Empirical comparison between the parallel protocol (applying a simple selection policy) and the sequential protocol (applying the optimal sequence) reveals that our proposed protocol is promising. We also address strategical issues.

Vector rectangular-shape laser based on reduced graphene oxide interacting with long fiber taper

A vector dual-wavelength rectangular-shape laser (RSL) based on a long fiber taper deposited with reduced graphene oxide is proposed, where the nonlinearity is enhanced due to large evanescent-field-interacting length and strong field confinement of a 8 mm fiber taper with a waist diameter of 4 micronmeters. Graphene flakes are deposited uniformly on the taper waist with light pressure effect, so this structure guarantees both excellent saturable absorption and high nonlinearity. The RSL with a repetition rate of 7.9 MHz exhibits fast polarization switching in two orthogonal polarization directions, and the temporal and spectral characteristics are investigated. The results suggest that the long taper-based graphene structure is an efficient choice for nonlinear devices.

Ultra-narrow Linewidth Fiber Laser with Self-injection Feedback Based on Rayleigh Backscattering

A single longitudinal mode fiber laser with ultra-narrow linewidth based on self-injection feedback by using the linewidth compress mechanism of Rayleigh backscattering (RBS) are proposed and demonstrated. Since the linewidth of RBS is narrower than that of the incident light in optical fibers and they have the same centre wavelength, the RBS can act as a mechanism to compress the linewidth of the incident light in fiber ring laser. In addition, more RBS signal could be collected to help further compress the laser linewidth besides the free spectral range is expanded when the self-injection feedback method is used. Our experimental results show that the side-mode suppression ratio of our laser is up to 75dB and the laser linewidth could be low to ~130Hz.

Schwarzschild-de Sitter Metric and Inertial Beltrami Coordinates

Under consideration of coordinate conditions, we get the Schwarzschild-Beltrami-de Sitter (S-BdS) metric solution of the Einstein field equations with a cosmological constant $Λ$. A brief review to the de Sitter invariant special relativity (dS-SR), and de Sitter general relativity (dS-GR, or GR with a $Λ$) is presented. The Beltrami metric $B_{μν}$ provides inertial reference frame for the dS-spacetime. By examining the Schwarzschild-de Sitter (S-dS) metric $g_{μν}^{(M)}$ existed in literatures since 1918, we find that the existed S-dS metric $g_{μν}^{(M)}$ describes some mixing effects of gravity and inertial-force, instead of a pure gravity effect arisen from "solar mass" $M$ in dS-GR. In this paper, we solve the vacuum Einstein equation of dS-GR, with the requirement of gravity-free metric $g_{μν}^{(M)}|_{M\rightarrow 0}=B_{μν}$. In this way we find S-BdS solution of dS-GR, written in inertial Beltrami coordinates. This is a new form of S-dS metric. Its physical meaning and possible applications are discussed.

Cryptanalysis of a multi-party quantum key agreement protocol with single particles

Recently, Sun et al. [Quant Inf Proc DOI: 10.1007/s11128-013-0569-x] presented an efficient multi-party quantum key agreement (QKA) protocol by employing single particles and unitary operations. The aim of this protocol is to fairly and securely negotiate a secret session key among $N$ parties with a high qubit efficiency. In addition, the authors claimed that no participant can learn anything more than his/her prescribed output in this protocol, i.e., the sub-secret keys of the participants can be kept secret during the protocol. However, here we points out that the sub-secret of a participant in Sun et al.'s protocol can be eavesdropped by the two participants next to him/her. In addition, a certain number of dishonest participants can fully determine the final shared key in this protocol. Finally, we discuss the factors that should be considered when designing a really fair and secure QKA protocol.

Remark on "Pair Creation Constrains Superluminal Neutrino Propagation"

The concept of group velocity of a particle should be consistent with its Hamilton-Jacobi velocity. This point is missed in the work of Cohen, Glashow, "{\it Pair Creation Constrains Superluminal Neutrino Propagation}" (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 107}, 181803 (2011)). It then leads to the conclusion of existence of Cherenkov-like radiation provided one sees superluminal neutrinos. We show that in the framework of Special Relativity with de Sitter space-time symmetry (dS-SR) the above Cohen-Glashow argument does not hold and the Cherenkov-like radiation is forbidden. Our result is consistent with the experimental results of the ICARUS Collaboration.

Vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting lasers and quantum dot lasers

The use of cavity to manipulate photon emission of quantum dots (QDs) has been opening unprecedented opportunities for realizing quantum functional nanophotonic devices and also quantum information devices. In particular, in the field of semiconductor lasers, QDs were introduced as a superior alternative to quantum wells to suppress the temperature dependence of the threshold current in vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VECSELs). In this work, a review of properties and development of semiconductor VECSEL devices and QD laser devices is given. Based on the features of VECSEL devices, the main emphasis is put on the recent development of technological approach on semiconductor QD VECSELs. Then, from the viewpoint of both single QD nanolaser and cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED), a single-QD-cavity system resulting from the strong coupling of QD cavity is presented. A difference of this review from the other existing works on semiconductor VECSEL devices is that we will cover both the fundamental aspects and technological approaches of QD VECSEL devices. And lastly, the presented review here has provided a deep insight into useful guideline for the development of QD VECSEL technology and future quantum functional nanophotonic devices and monolithic photonic integrated circuits (MPhICs).

Superluminal Neutrinos from Special Relativity with de Sitter Space-time Symmetry

We explore the recent OPERA experiment of superluminal neutrinos in the framework of Special Relativity with de Sitter space-time symmetry (dS-SR). According to Einstein a photon is treated as a massless particle in the framework of Special Relativity. In Special Relativity (SR) we have the universal parameter $c$, the photon velocity $c_{photon}$ and the phase velocity of a light wave in vacuum $c_{wave}=λν$. Due to the null experiments of Michelson-Morley we have $c=c_{wave}$. The parameter $c_{photon}$ is determined by the Noether charges corresponding to the space-time symmetries of SR. In Einstein's Special Relativity (E-SR) we have $c=c_{photon}$. In dS-SR, i.e. the Special Relativity with SO(4,1) de Sitter space-time symmetry, we have $c_{photon}>c$. In this paper, the OPERA datum are examined in the framework of dS-SR. We show that OPREA anomaly is in agreement with the prediction of dS-SR with $R\simeq 1.95\times 10^{12}l.y.$ Based on the $p$-$E$ relation of dS-SR, we also prove that the Cohen and Glashow's argument of possible superluminal neutrino's Cherenkov-like radiation is forbidden. We conclude that OPERA and ICARUS results are consistent and they are explained in the dS-SR framework.

On determination of the geometric cosmological constant from the OPERA experiment of superluminal neutrinos

The recent OPERA experiment of superluminal neutrinos has deep consequences in cosmology. In cosmology a fundamental constant is the cosmological constant. From observations one can estimate the effective cosmological constant $Λ_{eff}$ which is the sum of the quantum zero point energy $Λ_{dark energy}$ and the geometric cosmological constant $Λ$. The OPERA experiment can be applied to determine the geometric cosmological constant $Λ$. It is the first time to distinguish the contributions of $Λ$ and $Λ_{dark energy}$ from each other by experiment. The determination is based on an explanation of the OPERA experiment in the framework of Special Relativity with de Sitter space-time symmetry.

FeCl3 based Few-Layer Graphene Intercalation Compounds: Single Linear Dispersion Electronic Band Structure and Strong Charge Transfer Doping

Graphene has attracted great attentions since its first discovery in 2004. Various approaches have been proposed to control its physical and electronic properties. Here, we report that graphene based intercalation compounds is an efficient method to modify the electronic properties of few layer graphene (FLG). FeCl3 intercalated FLG were successfully prepared by two-zone vapor transport method. This is the first report on full intercalation for graphene samples. The features of the Raman G peak of such few-layer graphene intercalation compounds (FLGIC) are in good agreement with their full intercalation structures. The FLGIC presents single Lorentzian 2D peak, similar to that of single layer graphene, indicating the loss of electronic coupling between adjacent graphene layers. First principle calculations further reveal that the band structure of FLGIC is similar to single layer graphene but with strong doping effect due to the charge transfer from graphene to FeCl3. The successful fabrication of FLGIC opens a new way to modify properties of FLG for fundamental studies and future applications.

Microscopic description of the chiral Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid at the fractional quantum Hall edge

The effective field theory of the fractional quantum Hall edge is reformulated from microscopic dynamics. Noncommutative Chern-Simons theory is a microscopic description for the quantum Hall fluid. We use it for reference. Considering relabeling symmetry of the electrons and incompressibility of the fluid, we obtain a constraint and derive a chiral Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory containing interaction terms. We calculate one-loop corrections to the phonon and electron propagators and get a new tunneling exponent. It agrees with experiments.

Probing charged impurities in suspended graphene using Raman spectroscopy

Charged impurity (CI) scattering is one of the dominant factors that affect the carrier mobility in graphene. In this paper, we use Raman spectroscopy to probe the charged impurities in suspended graphene. We find that the 2D band intensity is very sensitive to the CI concentration in graphene, while the G band intensity is not affected. The intensity ratio between the 2D and G bands, I2D/IG, of suspended graphene is much stronger compared to that of non-suspended graphene, due to the extremely weak CI scattering in the former. This finding is consistent with the ultra-high carrier mobility in suspended graphene observed in recent transport measurements. Our results also suggest that at low CI concentrations that are critical for device applications, the I2D/IG ratio is a better criterion in selecting high quality single layer graphene samples than is the G band blue shift.
