Full-Spectrum Wireless Communications for 6G and Beyond: From Microwave, Millimeter-Wave, Terahertz to Lightwave

As of today, 5G is rolling out across the world, but academia and industry have shifted their attention to the sixth generation (6G) cellular technology for a full-digitalized, intelligent society in 2030 and beyond. 6G demands far more bandwidth to support extreme performance, exacerbating the problem of spectrum shortage in mobile communications. In this context, this paper proposes a novel concept coined Full-Spectrum Wireless Communications (FSWC). It makes use of all communication-feasible spectral resources over the whole electromagnetic (EW) spectrum, from microwave, millimeter wave, terahertz (THz), infrared light, visible light, to ultraviolet light. FSWC not only provides sufficient bandwidth but also enables new paradigms taking advantage of peculiarities on different EW bands. This paper will define FSWC, justify its necessity for 6G, and then discuss the opportunities and challenges of exploiting THz and optical bands.

Robust negative longitudinal magnetoresistance and spin-orbit torque in sputtered Pt3Sn topological semimetal

Contrary to topological insulators, topological semimetals possess a nontrivial chiral anomaly that leads to negative magnetoresistance and are hosts to both conductive bulk states and topological surface states with intriguing transport properties for spintronics. Here, we fabricate highly-ordered metallic Pt3Sn and Pt3SnxFe1-x thin films via sputtering technology. Systematic angular dependence (both in-plane and out-of-plane) study of magnetoresistance presents surprisingly robust quadratic and linear negative longitudinal magnetoresistance features for Pt3Sn and Pt3SnxFe1-x, respectively. We attribute the anomalous negative longitudinal magnetoresistance to the type-II Dirac semimetal phase (pristine Pt3Sn) and/or the formation of tunable Weyl semimetal phases through symmetry breaking processes, such as magnetic-atom doping, as confirmed by first-principles calculations. Furthermore, Pt3Sn and Pt3SnxFe1-x show the promising performance for facilitating the development of advanced spin-orbit torque devices. These results extend our understanding of chiral anomaly of topological semimetals and can pave the way for exploring novel topological materials for spintronic devices.

A large area, high counting rate micromegas-based neutron detector for BNCT

Beam monitoring and evaluation are very important to boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT), and a variety of detectors have been developed for these applications. However, most of the detectors used in BNCT only have a small detection area, leading to the inconvenience of the full-scale 2-D measurement of the beam. Based on micromegas technology, we designed a neutron detector with large detection area and high counting rate. This detector has a detection area of 288 mm multiples 288 mm and can measure thermal, epithermal, and fast neutrons with different detector settings. The BNCT experiments demonstrated that this detector has a very good 2-D imaging performance for the thermal, epithermal, fast neutron and gamma components, a highest counting rate of 94 kHz/channel, and a good linearity response to the beam power. Additionally, the flux fraction of each component can be calculated based on the measurement results. The Am-Be neutron source experiment indicates that this detector has a spatial resolution of approximately 1.4 mm, meeting the requirements of applications in BNCT. It is evident that this micromegas-based neutron detector with a large area and high counting rate capability has great development prospects in BNCT beam monitoring and evaluation applications.

Cell-Edge Performance Booster in 6G: Cell-Free Massive MIMO vs. Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface

User experience in mobile communications is vulnerable to worse quality at the cell edge, which cannot be compensated by enjoying excellent service at the cell center, according to the principle of risk aversion in behavioral economics. Constrained by weak signal strength and substantial inter-cell interference, the cell edge is always a major bottleneck of any mobile network. Due to their possibility for empowering the next-generation mobile system, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) and cell-free massive MIMO (CFmMIMO) have recently attracted a lot of focus from academia and industry. In addition to a variety of technological advantages, both are highly potential to boost cell-edge performance. To the authors' best knowledge, a performance comparison of RIS and CFmMIMO, especially on the cell edge, is still missing in the literature. To fill this gap, this paper establishes a fair scenario and demonstrates extensive numerical results to clarify their behaviors at the cell edge.

On Function-Coupled Watermarks for Deep Neural Networks

Well-performed deep neural networks (DNNs) generally require massive labelled data and computational resources for training. Various watermarking techniques are proposed to protect such intellectual properties (IPs), wherein the DNN providers implant secret information into the model so that they can later claim IP ownership by retrieving their embedded watermarks with some dedicated trigger inputs. While promising results are reported in the literature, existing solutions suffer from watermark removal attacks, such as model fine-tuning and model pruning. In this paper, we propose a novel DNN watermarking solution that can effectively defend against the above attacks. Our key insight is to enhance the coupling of the watermark and model functionalities such that removing the watermark would inevitably degrade the model's performance on normal inputs. To this end, unlike previous methods relying on secret features learnt from out-of-distribution data, our method only uses features learnt from in-distribution data. Specifically, on the one hand, we propose to sample inputs from the original training dataset and fuse them as watermark triggers. On the other hand, we randomly mask model weights during training so that the information of our embedded watermarks spreads in the network. By doing so, model fine-tuning/pruning would not forget our function-coupled watermarks. Evaluation results on various image classification tasks show a 100\% watermark authentication success rate under aggressive watermark removal attacks, significantly outperforming existing solutions. Capacity Analysis and Rate Maximization Design in RIS-Aided Uplink Multi-User MIMO

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has recently drawn intensive attention due to its potential of simultaneously realizing high spectral and energy efficiency in a sustainable way. This paper focuses on the design of efficient transmission methods to maximize the uplink sum throughput in a RIS-aided multi-user multi-input multi-output (MU-MIMO) system. To provide an insightful basis, the channel capacity of RIS-aided MU-MIMO is theoretically analyzed. Then, the conventional transmission schemes based on orthogonal multiple access are presented as the baseline. From the information-theoretic perspective, we propose two novel schemes, i.e., \textit{joint transmission} based on the semidefinite relaxation of quadratic optimization problems and \textit{opportunistic transmission} relying on the best user selection. The superiority of the proposed schemes over the conventional ones in terms of achievable rates is justified through simulation results.

User Selection for Simple Passive Beamforming in Multi-RIS-Aided Multi-User Communications

This paper focuses on multi-user downlink signal transmission in a wireless system aided by multiple reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). In such a multi-RIS, multi-user, multi-antenna scenario, determining a set of RIS phase shifts to maximize the sum throughput becomes intractable. Hence, we propose a novel scheme that can substantially simplify the optimization of passive beamforming. By opportunistically selecting a user with the best channel condition as the only active transmitter in the system, it degrades to single-user passive beamforming, where two methods, i.e., joint optimization based on the semidefinite relaxation approach and alternating optimization, are applicable. The superiority of the proposed scheme is demonstrated through Monte-Carlo simulations.

User Scheduling and Passive Beamforming for FDMA/OFDMA in Intelligent Reflection Surface

Most prior works on intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) merely consider point-to-point communications, including a single user, for ease of analysis. Nevertheless, a practical wireless system needs to accommodate multiple users simultaneously. Due to the lack of frequency-selective reflection, namely the set of phase shifts cannot be different across frequency subchannels, the integration of IRS imposes a fundamental challenge to frequency-multiplexing approaches such as frequency-division multiple access (FDMA) and the widely adopted technique called orthogonal FDMA (OFDMA). It motivates us to study (O)FDMA-based multi-user IRS communications to clarify which user scheduling and passive beamforming are favorable under this non-frequency-selective reflection environment. Theoretical analysis and numerical evaluation reveal that (O)FDMA does not need user scheduling when there are a few users. If the number of users becomes large, neither user scheduling nor IRS reflection optimization is necessary. These findings help substantially simplify the design of (O)FDMA-based IRS communications.

Orthogonal and Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access for Intelligent Reflection Surface in 6G Systems

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is envisioned to become a key technology for the upcoming six-generation (6G) wireless system due to its potential of reaping high performance in a power-efficient and cost-efficient way. With its disruptive capability and hardware constraint, the integration of IRS imposes some fundamental particularities on the coordination of multi-user signal transmission. Consequently, the conventional orthogonal and non-orthogonal multiple-access schemes are hard to directly apply because of the joint optimization of active beamforming at the base station and passive reflection at the IRS. Relying on an alternating optimization method, we develop novel schemes for efficient multiple access in IRS-aided multi-user multi-antenna systems in this paper. Achievable performance in terms of the sum spectral efficiency is theoretically analyzed. A comprehensive comparison of different schemes and configurations is conducted through Monte-Carlo simulations to clarify which scheme is favorable for this emerging 6G paradigm.

Multi-User Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-Aided Communications Under Discrete Phase Shifts

This paper focuses on studying orthogonal and non-orthogonal multiple access in intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided systems. Unlike most prior works assuming continuous phase shifts, we employ the practical setup where only a finite number of discrete phase shifts are available. To maximize the sum rate, active beamforming and discrete reflection need to be jointly optimized. We therefore propose an alternative optimization method to get the optimal continuous phase shifts iteratively, and then quantize each phase shift to its nearest discrete value. The sum-rate maximization of different schemes is theoretically analyzed and numerically evaluated with different numbers of phase-control bits.

Intelligent Reflecting Vehicle Surface: A Novel IRS Paradigm for Moving Vehicular Networks

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has recently received much attention from the research community due to its potential to achieve high spectral and power efficiency cost-effectively. In addition to traditional cellular networks, the use of IRS in vehicular networks is also considered. Prior works on IRS-aided vehicle-to-everything communications focus on deploying reflection surfaces on the facades of buildings along the road for sidelink performance enhancement. This paper goes beyond the state of the art by presenting a novel paradigm coined Intelligent Reflecting Vehicle Surface (IRVS). It embeds a massive number of reflection elements on vehicles' surfaces to aid moving vehicular networks in military and emergency communications. We propose an alternative optimization method to optimize jointly active beamforming at the base station and passive reflection across multiple randomly-distributed vehicle surfaces. Performance evaluation in terms of sum spectral efficiency under continuous, discrete, and random phase shifts is conducted. Numerical results reveal that IRVS can substantially improve the capacity of a moving vehicular network.

MSINet: Twins Contrastive Search of Multi-Scale Interaction for Object ReID

Neural Architecture Search (NAS) has been increasingly appealing to the society of object Re-Identification (ReID), for that task-specific architectures significantly improve the retrieval performance. Previous works explore new optimizing targets and search spaces for NAS ReID, yet they neglect the difference of training schemes between image classification and ReID. In this work, we propose a novel Twins Contrastive Mechanism (TCM) to provide more appropriate supervision for ReID architecture search. TCM reduces the category overlaps between the training and validation data, and assists NAS in simulating real-world ReID training schemes. We then design a Multi-Scale Interaction (MSI) search space to search for rational interaction operations between multi-scale features. In addition, we introduce a Spatial Alignment Module (SAM) to further enhance the attention consistency confronted with images from different sources. Under the proposed NAS scheme, a specific architecture is automatically searched, named as MSINet. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method surpasses state-of-the-art ReID methods on both in-domain and cross-domain scenarios. Source code available in https://github.com/vimar-gu/MSINet.

A sturcture-preserving, upwind-SAV scheme for the degenerate Cahn--Hilliard equation with applications to simulating surface diffusion

This paper establishes a structure-preserving numerical scheme for the Cahn--Hilliard equation with degenerate mobility. First, by applying a finite volume method with upwind numerical fluxes to the degenerate Cahn--Hilliard equation rewritten by the scalar auxiliary variable (SAV) approach, we creatively obtain an unconditionally bound-preserving, energy-stable and fully-discrete scheme, which, for the first time, addresses the boundedness of the classical SAV approach under $H^{-1}$-gradient flow. Then, a dimensional-splitting technique is introduced in high-dimensional cases, which greatly reduces the computational complexity while preserves original structural properties. Numerical experiments are presented to verify the bound-preserving and energy-stable properties of the proposed scheme. Finally, by applying the proposed structure-preserving scheme, we numerically demonstrate that surface diffusion can be approximated by the Cahn--Hilliard equation with degenerate mobility and Flory--Huggins potential when the absolute temperature is sufficiently low, which agrees well with the theoretical result by using formal asymptotic analysis.wn theoretically by formal matched asymptotics.

TE and TM Modes in Metallic Waveguide Filled With a Lossless and Fully Anisotropic Medium

This letter gives a condition for the existence of the pure TE and TM modes in the metallic waveguide filled with a homogeneous, fully anisotropic and lossless medium. The condition is a relation between the permittivity and permeability tensors of the fully anisotropic medium. The theory given in the letter is the extension of the classic electromagnetic waveguide theory. At last, we employ the commercial software COMSOL Multiphysics to simulate the metallic waveguide problem filled with a homogeneous, fully anisotropic and lossless medium. Numerical experiment shows that the condition supported in the letter does confirm the existence of the pure TE and TM modes in the anisotropic waveguide.

A convexity-preserving and perimeter-decreasing parametric finite element method for the area-preserving curve shortening flow

We propose and analyze a semi-discrete parametric finite element scheme for solving the area-preserving curve shortening flow. The scheme is based on Dziuk's approach (SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 36(6): 1808-1830, 1999) for the anisotropic curve shortening flow. We prove that the scheme preserves two fundamental geometric structures of the flow with an initially convex curve: (i) the convexity-preserving property, and (ii) the perimeter-decreasing property. To the best of our knowledge, the convexity-preserving property of numerical schemes which approximate the flow is rigorously proved for the first time. Furthermore, the error estimate of the semi-discrete scheme is established, and numerical results are provided to demonstrate the structure-preserving properties as well as the accuracy of the scheme.

Multi-block-Single-probe Variance Reduced Estimator for Coupled Compositional Optimization

Variance reduction techniques such as SPIDER/SARAH/STORM have been extensively studied to improve the convergence rates of stochastic non-convex optimization, which usually maintain and update a sequence of estimators for a single function across iterations. What if we need to track multiple functional mappings across iterations but only with access to stochastic samples of $\mathcal{O}(1)$ functional mappings at each iteration? There is an important application in solving an emerging family of coupled compositional optimization problems in the form of $\sum_{i=1}^m f_i(g_i(\mathbf{w}))$, where $g_i$ is accessible through a stochastic oracle. The key issue is to track and estimate a sequence of $\mathbf g(\mathbf{w})=(g_1(\mathbf{w}), \ldots, g_m(\mathbf{w}))$ across iterations, where $\mathbf g(\mathbf{w})$ has $m$ blocks and it is only allowed to probe $\mathcal{O}(1)$ blocks to attain their stochastic values and Jacobians. To improve the complexity for solving these problems, we propose a novel stochastic method named Multi-block-Single-probe Variance Reduced (MSVR) estimator to track the sequence of $\mathbf g(\mathbf{w})$. It is inspired by STORM but introduces a customized error correction term to alleviate the noise not only in stochastic samples for the selected blocks but also in those blocks that are not sampled. With the help of the MSVR estimator, we develop several algorithms for solving the aforementioned compositional problems with improved complexities across a spectrum of settings with non-convex/convex/strongly convex/Polyak-Łojasiewicz (PL) objectives. Our results improve upon prior ones in several aspects, including the order of sample complexities and dependence on the strong convexity parameter. Empirical studies on multi-task deep AUC maximization demonstrate the better performance of using the new estimator.

Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning with Shared Resources for Inventory Management

In this paper, we consider the inventory management (IM) problem where we need to make replenishment decisions for a large number of stock keeping units (SKUs) to balance their supply and demand. In our setting, the constraint on the shared resources (such as the inventory capacity) couples the otherwise independent control for each SKU. We formulate the problem with this structure as Shared-Resource Stochastic Game (SRSG)and propose an efficient algorithm called Context-aware Decentralized PPO (CD-PPO). Through extensive experiments, we demonstrate that CD-PPO can accelerate the learning procedure compared with standard MARL algorithms.

Search for gamma-ray spectral lines with the DArk Matter Particle Explorer

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is well suitable for searching for monochromatic and sharp $γ$-ray structures in the GeV$-$TeV range thanks to its unprecedented high energy resolution. In this work, we search for $γ$-ray line structures using five years of DAMPE data. To improve the sensitivity, we develop two types of dedicated data sets (including the BgoOnly data which is the first time to be used in the data analysis for the calorimeter-based gamma-ray observatories) and adopt the signal-to-noise ratio optimized regions of interest (ROIs) for different DM density profiles. No line signals or candidates are found between 10 and 300 GeV in the Galaxy. The constraints on the velocity-averaged cross section for $χχ\to γγ$ and the decay lifetime for $χ\to γν$, both at 95% confidence level, have been calculated and the systematic uncertainties have been taken into account. Comparing to the previous Fermi-LAT results, though DAMPE has an acceptance smaller by a factor of $\sim 10$, similar constraints on the DM parameters are achieved and below 100 GeV the lower limits on the decay lifetime are even stronger by a factor of a few. Our results demonstrate the potential of high-energy-resolution observations on dark matter detection.
