Data Acquisition Software for CBM-TOF super module quality control

The time-of-flight (TOF) system in the Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment is composed of super modules based on multi-gap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPC) for high-denseness, high-resolution time measurement. In order to evaluate the quality of detectors during the mass production, a distributed data readout system is developed to meet with the high data rate of 6.4Gbps, and a related data acquisition (DAQ) software is implemented under Linux operating system to test and verify the feasibility of the distributed data readout method. In this paper, the DAQ software is focused on data collection, event building, status monitoring and system controlling. Laboratory tests confirmed the function of the DAQ software and show that the overall data transfer rate of a single data transmission path can reach up to about 550Mbps which already meet the demand.

Motion Planning for a Humanoid Mobile Manipulator System

A high redundant non-holonomic humanoid mobile dual-arm manipulator system is presented in this paper where the motion planning to realize "human-like" autonomous navigation and manipulation tasks is studied. Firstly, an improved MaxiMin NSGA-II algorithm, which optimizes five objective functions to solve the problems of singularity, redundancy, and coupling between mobile base and manipulator simultaneously, is proposed to design the optimal pose to manipulate the target object. Then, in order to link the initial pose and that optimal pose, an off-line motion planning algorithm is designed. In detail, an efficient direct-connect bidirectional RRT and gradient descent algorithm is proposed to reduce the sampled nodes largely, and a geometric optimization method is proposed for path pruning. Besides, head forward behaviors are realized by calculating the reasonable orientations and assigning them to the mobile base to improve the quality of human-robot interaction. Thirdly, the extension to on-line planning is done by introducing real-time sensing, collision-test and control cycles to update robotic motion in dynamic environments. Fourthly, an EEs' via-point-based multi-objective genetic algorithm is proposed to design the "human-like" via-poses by optimizing four objective functions. Finally, numerous simulations are presented to validate the effectiveness of proposed algorithms.

DFNet: Semantic Segmentation on Panoramic Images with Dynamic Loss Weights and Residual Fusion Block

For the self-driving and automatic parking, perception is the basic and critical technique, moreover, the detection of lane markings and parking slots is an important part of visual perception. In this paper, we use the semantic segmentation method to segment the area and classify the class of lane makings and parking slots on panoramic surround view (PSV) dataset. We propose the DFNet and make two main contributions, one is dynamic loss weights, and the other is residual fusion block (RFB). Dynamic loss weights are varying from classes, calculated according to the pixel number of each class in a batch. RFB is composed of two convolutional layers, one pooling layer, and a fusion layer to combine the feature maps by pixel multiplication. We evaluate our method on PSV dataset, and achieve an advanced result.

VH-HFCN based Parking Slot and Lane Markings Segmentation on Panoramic Surround View

The automatic parking is being massively developed by car manufacturers and providers. Until now, there are two problems with the automatic parking. First, there is no openly-available segmentation labels of parking slot on panoramic surround view (PSV) dataset. Second, how to detect parking slot and road structure robustly. Therefore, in this paper, we build up a public PSV dataset. At the same time, we proposed a highly fused convolutional network (HFCN) based segmentation method for parking slot and lane markings based on the PSV dataset. A surround-view image is made of four calibrated images captured from four fisheye cameras. We collect and label more than 4,200 surround view images for this task, which contain various illuminated scenes of different types of parking slots. A VH-HFCN network is proposed, which adopts an HFCN as the base, with an extra efficient VH-stage for better segmenting various markings. The VH-stage consists of two independent linear convolution paths with vertical and horizontal convolution kernels respectively. This modification enables the network to robustly and precisely extract linear features. We evaluated our model on the PSV dataset and the results showed outstanding performance in ground markings segmentation. Based on the segmented markings, parking slots and lanes are acquired by skeletonization, hough line transform and line arrangement.

Effects of loss on the phase sensitivity with parity detection in an SU(1,1) interferometer

We theoretically study the effects of loss on the phase sensitivity of an SU(1,1) interferometer with parity detection with various input states. We show that although the sensitivity of phase estimation decreases in the presence of loss, it can still beat the shot-noise limit with small loss. To examine the performance of parity detection, the comparison is performed among homodyne detection, intensity detection, and parity detection. Compared with homodyne detection and intensity detection, parity detection has a slight better optimal phase sensitivity in the absence of loss, but has a worse optimal phase sensitivity with a significant amount of loss with one-coherent state or coherent $\otimes$ squeezed state input.

Investigation of the near-threshold cluster resonance in $^{14}\rm{C}$

An experiment for $p(^{14}\rm{C}$,$^{14}\rm{C}^{*}\rightarrow^{10}\rm{Be}+α)\mathit{p}$ inelastic excitation and decay was performed in inverse kinematics at a beam energy of 25.3 MeV/u. A series of $^{14}\rm{C}$ excited states, including a new one at 18.3(1) MeV, were observed which decay to various states of the final nucleus of $^{10}\rm{Be}$. A specially designed telescope-system, installed around the zero degree, played an essential role in detecting the resonant states near the $α$-separation threshold. A state at 14.1(1) MeV is clearly identified, being consistent with the predicted band-head of the molecular rotational band characterized by the $π$-bond linear-chain-configuration. Further clarification of the properties of this exotic state is suggested by using appropriate reaction tools.

Sharp-interface approach for simulating solid-state dewetting in two dimensions: a Cahn-Hoffman $\boldsymbolξ$-vector formulation

By using a Cahn-Hoffman $\boldsymbolξ$-vector formulation, we propose a sharp-interface approach for solving solid-state dewetting problems in two dimensions. First, based on the thermodynamic variation and smooth vector-field perturbation method, we rigorously derive a sharp-interface model with weakly anisotropic surface energies, and this model describes the interface evolution which occurs through surface diffusion flow and contact line migration. Second, a parametric finite element method in terms of the $\boldsymbolξ$-vector formulation is proposed for numerically solving the sharp-interface model. By performing numerical simulations, we examine several specific evolution processes for solid-state dewetting of thin films, e.g., the evolution of small islands, pinch-off of large islands and power-law retraction dynamics of semi-infinite step films, and these simulation results are highly consistent with experimental observations. Finally, we also include the strong surface energy anisotropy into the sharp-interface model and design its corresponding numerical scheme via the $\boldsymbolξ$-vector formulation.

Distributed consensus of linear MASs with an unknown leader via a predictive extended state observer considering input delay and disturbances

The problem of disturbance rejection/attenuation for constant-input delayed linear multi-agent systems (MASs) with the directed communication topology is tackled in this paper, where a classic model reduction technique is introduced to transform the delayed MAS into the delay-free one. First, when the leader has no control input, a novel adaptive predictive extended state observer (ESO) using only relative state information of neighboring agents is designed to achieve disturbance-rejected consensus tracking. The stabilization analysis is presented via the Lyapunov function and sufficient conditions are derived in terms of linear matrix inequalities. Then the result is extended to the disturbance-attenuated case where the leader has bounded control input which is only known by a portion of followers. Finally, two numerical examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of proposed strategies. The main contribution focuses on the design of adaptive predictive ESO protocols with the fully distributed property.

A unified framework of fully distributed adaptive output time-varying formation control for linear multi-agent systems: an observer viewpoint

This paper presents a unified framework of time-varying formation (TVF) design for general linear multi-agent systems (MAS) based on an observer viewpoint from undirected to directed topology, from stabilization to tracking and from a leader without input to a one with bounded input. The followers can form a TVF shape which is specified by piecewise continuously differential vectors. The leader's trajectory, which is available to only a subset of followers, is also time-varying. For the undirected formation tracking and directed formation stabilization cases, only the relative output measurements of neighbors are required to design control protocols; for the directed formation tracking case, the agents need to be introspective (i.e. agents have partial knowledge of their own states) and the output measurements are required. Furthermore, considering the real applications, the leader with bounded input case is studied. One main contribution of this paper is that fully distributed adaptive output protocols, which require no global information of communication topology and do not need the absolute or relative state information, are proposed to solve the TVF control problem. Numerical simulations including an application to nonholonomic mobile vehicles are provided to verify the theoretical results.

Mixed Spectral Element Method for the Waveguide Problem with Bloch Periodic Boundary

The mixed spectral element method (MSEM) is applied to solve the waveguide problem with Bloch periodic boundary condition (BPBC). Based on the BPBC for the original Helmholtz equation and the periodic boundary condition (PBC) for the equivalent but modified Helmholtz equation, two equivalent mixed variational formulations are applied for the MSEM. Unlike the traditional finite element method and SEM, both these mixed SEM schemes are completely free of spurious modes because of their use of the Gauss' law and the curl-conforming vector basis functions structured by the Gauss-Legendre-Lobatto (GLL) points. A simple implementation method is used to deal with the BPBC and the PBC for the mixed variational formulations so that both schemes can save computational costs over the traditional methods. Several numerical results are also provided to verify that both schemes are free of spurious modes and have high accuracy with the propagation constants.

Prediction of two-dimensional nodal-line semimetal in a carbon nitride covalent network

Carbon nitride compounds have emerged recently as a prominent member of 2D materials beyond graphene. The experimental realizations of 2D graphitic carbon nitride g-C$_3$N$_4$, nitrogenated holey grahpene C$_2$N, polyaniline C$_3$N have shown their promising potential in energy and environmental applications. In this work, we predict a new type of carbon nitride network with a C$_9$N$_4$ stoichiometry from first principle calculations. Unlike common C-N compounds and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), which are typically insulating, surprisingly C$_9$N$_4$ is found to be a 2D nodal-line semimetal (NLSM). The nodal line in C$_9$N$_4$ forms a closed ring centered at $Γ$ point, which originates from the pz orbitals of both C and N. The linear crossing happens right at Fermi level contributed by two sets of dispersive Kagome and Dirac bands, which is robust due to negligible spin-orbital-coupling (SOC) in C and N. Besides, it is revealed that the formation of nodal ring is of accidental band degeneracy in nature induced by the chemical potential difference of C and N, as validated by a single orbital tight-binding model, rather than protected by crystal in-plane mirror symmetry or band topology. Interestingly, a new structure of nodal line, i.e., nodal-cylinder, is found in momentum space for AA-stacking C$_9$N$_4$. Our results imply possible functionalization for a novel metal-free C-N covalent network with interesting semimetallic properties.

AlignedReID: Surpassing Human-Level Performance in Person Re-Identification

In this paper, we propose a novel method called AlignedReID that extracts a global feature which is jointly learned with local features. Global feature learning benefits greatly from local feature learning, which performs an alignment/matching by calculating the shortest path between two sets of local features, without requiring extra supervision. After the joint learning, we only keep the global feature to compute the similarities between images. Our method achieves rank-1 accuracy of 94.4% on Market1501 and 97.8% on CUHK03, outperforming state-of-the-art methods by a large margin. We also evaluate human-level performance and demonstrate that our method is the first to surpass human-level performance on Market1501 and CUHK03, two widely used Person ReID datasets.

Li doping kagome spin liquid compounds

Herbertsmithite and Zn-doped barlowite are two compounds for experimental realization of twodimensional gapped kagome spin liquid. Theoretically, it has been proposed that charge doping a quantum spin liquid gives rise to exotic metallic states, such as high-temperature superconductivity. However, one recent experiment about herbertsmithite with successful Li-doping shows surprisingly the insulating state even under the heavy doped scenario, which can hardly be explained by many-body physics. Using first-principles calculation, we performed a comprehensive study about the Li intercalated doping effect of these two compounds. For the Li-doped herbertsmithite, we identified the optimized Li position at the Cl-(OH)$_3$-Cl pentahedron site instead of previously speculated Cl-(OH)$_3$ tetrahedral site. With the increase of Li doping concentration, the saturation magnetization decreases linearly due to the charge transfer from Li to Cu ions. Moreover, we found that Li forms chemical bonds with the nearby (OH)$^-$ and Cl$^-$ ions, which lowers the surrounding chemical potential and traps the electron, as evidenced by the localized charge distribution, explaining the insulating behavior measured experimentally. Though with different structure from herbertsmithite, Zn-doped Barlowite shows the same features upon Li doping. We conclude that Li doping this family of kagome spin liquid cannot realize exotic metallic states, other methods should be further explored, such as element substitution with different valence electrons.

Tunable Bi-frustrated Electron Spin and Charge States in a Cu-Hexaaminobenzene Framework

A geometrically frustrated lattice may host frustrated electron spin or charge states that spawn exotic quantum phases. We show that a newly synthesized metal-organic framework of Cu-Hexaaminobenzene [Cu$_3$(HAB)$_2$] exhibits a multi spectra of unusual quantum phases long sought after in condensed matter physics. On one hand, the Cu$^{2+}$ ions form an ideal $S$-1/2 antiferromagnetic kagome lattice. On the other hand, the conjugated-electrons from the organic ligands give rise to completely dispersionless energy bands around the Fermi level, reproducing a frustrated $π_x$-$π_y$ hopping model on a honeycomb lattice. We propose to characterize the coexistence of frustrated local spins and conjugated electrons through scanning tunneling microscopy simulations. Most remarkably, their close energy proximity enables one to tune the system between the two frustrated states by doping up to one hole per HAB unit. Thus, Cu$_3$(HAB)$_2$ provides a unique exciting platform to investigate the interplay of frustrated spins and electrons in one single lattice, e.g. by gating experiments, which will undoubtedly raise interesting theoretical questions leading to possible new condensed-matter phases.

Temperature effects on MIPs in the BGO calorimeters of DAMPE

In this paper, we presented a study of temperature effects on BGO calorimeters using proton MIP's collected in the first year operation of DAMPE. By directly comparing MIP calibration constants used by DAMPE data production pipe line, we found an experimental relation between temperature and signal amplitudes of each BGO bar: a general deviation of -1.162%/$^{\circ}$C,and -0.47%/$^{\circ}$C to -1.60%/$^{\circ}$C statistically for each detector element. During 2016, DAMPE's temperature changed by about 7 degrees due to solar elevation angle and the corresponding energy scale bias is about 8%. By frequent MIP calibration operation, this kind of bias is eliminated to an acceptable value.

Optimizing the Performance of Reactive Molecular Dynamics Simulations for Multi-Core Architectures

Reactive molecular dynamics simulations are computationally demanding. Reaching spatial and temporal scales where interesting scientific phenomena can be observed requires efficient and scalable implementations on modern hardware. In this paper, we focus on optimizing the performance of the widely used LAMMPS/ReaxC package for multi-core architectures. As hybrid parallelism allows better leverage of the increasing on-node parallelism, we adopt thread parallelism in the construction of bonded and nonbonded lists, and in the computation of complex ReaxFF interactions. To mitigate the I/O overheads due to large volumes of trajectory data produced and to save users the burden of post-processing, we also develop a novel in-situ tool for molecular species analysis. We analyze the performance of the resulting ReaxC-OMP package on Mira, an IBM Blue Gene/Q supercomputer. For PETN systems of sizes ranging from 32 thousand to 16.6 million particles, we observe speedups in the range of 1.5-4.5x. We observe sustained performance improvements for up to 262,144 cores (1,048,576 processes) of Mira and a weak scaling efficiency of 91.5% in large simulations containing 16.6 million particles. The in-situ molecular species analysis tool incurs only insignificant overheads across various system sizes and run configurations.

Gapped spin-1/2 spinon excitations in a new kagome quantum spin liquid compound Cu$_3$Zn(OH)$_6$FBr

We report a new kagome quantum spin liquid candidate Cu$_3$Zn(OH)$_6$FBr, which does not experience any phase transition down to 50 mK, more than three orders lower than the antiferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature ($\sim$ 200 K). A clear gap opening at low temperature is observed in the uniform spin susceptibility obtained from $^{19}$F nuclear magnetic resonance measurements. We observe the characteristic magnetic field dependence of the gap as expected for fractionalized spin-1/2 spinon excitations. Our experimental results provide firm evidence for spin fractionalization in a topologically ordered spin system, resembling charge fractionalization in the fractional quantum Hall state.
