Stable Equilibria of Anisotropic Particles on Substrates: a Generalized Winterbottom Construction

We present a new approach for predicting stable equilibrium shapes of crystalline islands on flat substrates, as commonly occur through solid-state dewetting of thin films. The new theory is a generalization of the widely used Winterbottom construction i.e., an extension of the Wulff construction for particles on substrates). This approach is equally applicable to cases where the crystal surface energy is isotropic, weakly anisotropic, strongly anisotropic and "cusped". We demonstrate that, unlike in the classical Winterbottom approach, multiple equilibrium island shapes may be possible when the surface energy is strongly anisotropic. We analyze these shapes through perturbation analysis, by calculating the first and second variations of the total free energy functional with respect to contact locations and island shape. Based on this analysis, we find the necessary conditions for stable equilibria and exploit this through a generalization of the Winterbottom construction to identify all possible stable equilibrium shapes. Finally, we propose a dynamical evolution method based on surface diffusion mass transport to determine whether all of the stable equilibrium shapes are dynamically accessible. Applying this approach, we demonstrate that islands with different initial shapes may evolve into different stationary shapes and show that these dynamically-determined stationary states correspond to the predicted stable equilibrium shapes, as obtained from the generalized Winterbottom construction.

A Feature Embedding Strategy for High-level CNN representations from Multiple ConvNets

Following the rapidly growing digital image usage, automatic image categorization has become preeminent research area. It has broaden and adopted many algorithms from time to time, whereby multi-feature (generally, hand-engineered features) based image characterization comes handy to improve accuracy. Recently, in machine learning, pre-trained deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs or ConvNets) have been that the features extracted through such DCNN can improve classification accuracy. Thence, in this paper, we further investigate a feature embedding strategy to exploit cues from multiple DCNNs. We derive a generalized feature space by embedding three different DCNN bottleneck features with weights respect to their Softmax cross-entropy loss. Test outcomes on six different object classification data-sets and an action classification data-set show that regardless of variation in image statistics and tasks the proposed multi-DCNN bottleneck feature fusion is well suited to image classification tasks and an effective complement of DCNN. The comparisons to existing fusion-based image classification approaches prove that the proposed method surmounts the state-of-the-art methods and produces competitive results with fully trained DCNNs as well.

A Parameterized Energy Correction Method for Electromagnetic Showers in BGO-ECAL of DAMPE

DAMPE is a space-based mission designed as a high energy particle detector measuring cosmic-rays and $γ-$rays which was successfully launched on Dec.17, 2015. The BGO electromagnetic calorimeter is one of the key sub-detectors of DAMPE for energy measurement of electromagnetic showers produced by $e^{\pm}/γ$. Due to energy loss in dead material and energy leakage outside the calorimeter, the deposited energy in BGO underestimates the primary energy of incident $e^{\pm}/γ$. In this paper, based on detailed MC simulations, a parameterized energy correction method using the lateral and longitudinal information of electromagnetic showers has been studied and verified with data of electron beam test at CERN. The measurements of energy linearity and resolution are significantly improved by applying this correction method for electromagnetic showers.

Creation of Half-metallic f -orbital Dirac Fermion with Superlight Elements in Orbital-Designed Molecular Lattice

Magnetism in solids generally originates from the localized $d$- or $f$-orbitals that are hosted by heavy transition-metal elements. Here, we demonstrate a novel mechanism for designing half-metallic $f$-orbital Dirac fermion from superlight $sp$-elements. Combining first-principles and model calculations, we show that bare and flat-band-sandwiched (FBS) Dirac bands can be created when C$_{20}$ molecules are deposited into a 2D hexagonal lattice, which are composed of $f$-molecular orbitals (MOs) derived from $sp$-atomic orbitals (AOs). Furthermore, charge doping of the FBS Dirac bands induces spontaneous spin-polarization, converting the system into a half-metallic Dirac state. Based on this discovery, a model of spin field effect transistor is proposed to generate and transport 100\% spin-polarized carriers. Our finding illustrates a novel concept to realize exotic quantum states by manipulating MOs, instead of AOs, in orbital-designed molecular crystal lattices.

Quantum hydrodynamic modeling of edge modes in chiral Berry plasmons

A quantum hydrodynamic model is used to study the edge modes of chiral Berry plasmons. The transcendental equation of the dispersion relation is solved nonlinearly and semi-analytically. We predict a new one-way chiral edge state with the quantum effect compared to that without the quantum effect, at the both side of $q=0$. Indeed, the plasmon frequencies for positive and negative $q$, exhibit different limits for $q\rightarrow 0^{-}$ and $q\rightarrow 0^{+}$. As a result, the quantum effect enhances the chirality in the vicinity of $q=0$. Both counterpropagating edge modes exhibit greater confinement to the edge with the quantum effect. In addition, new localized edge modes are found with increased Berry flux in both cases, i.e., without and with the quantum effect.

Triple junction drag effects during topological changes in the evolution of polycrystalline microstructures

Experiments, theory and atomistic simulations show that finite triple junction mobility results in non-equilibrium triple junction angles in evolving polycrystalline systems. These angles have been predicted and verified for cases where grain boundary migration is steady-state. Yet, steady-state never occurs during the evolution of polycrystalline microstructures as a result of changing grain size and topological events (e.g., grain face/edge switching - "$T_1$" process, or grain disappearance "$T_2$" or "$T_3$" processes). We examine the non-steady evolution of the triple junction angle in the vicinity of topological events and show that large deviations from equilibrium and/or steady-state angles occur. We analyze the characteristic relaxation time of triple junction angles $τ$ by consideration of a pair of topological events, beginning from steady-state migration. Using numerical results and theoretical analysis we predict how the triple junction angle varies with time and how $τ$ varies with triple junction mobility. We argue that it is precisely those cases where grain boundaries are moving quickly (e.g., topological process in nanocrystalline materials), that the classical steady-state prediction of the finite triple junction mobility triple junction angle is inapplicable and may only be applied qualitatively.

Design of mechanically robust metasurface lenses for RGB colors

In recent years, dielectric rod based metasurface lenses have been particularly investigated for their potential applications in replacing the traditional bulky lens with high efficiency. However, the isolated granular structure may lead to robustness and chromatic aberration concerns. In this work, a low refractive-index embedding medium was applied to solve the structural stability problem that also enables the device to be transferable to desired position or surface. Based on this, a compound metasurface lens composed of randomly interleaved frequency-selective zone sectors is proposed to broaden the bandwidth of the two-dimensional device. The validities of the proposed method and the application potentials for the multifunctional lens that can manipulate RGB three colors have been numerically examined and verified. The current results are of essence in guiding the future design of metasurface lenses for real practice.

Using 81Kr and Noble Gases to Characterize and Date Groundwater and Brines in the Baltic Artesian Basin on the One-Million-Year Timescale

Analyses for $^{81}$Kr and noble gases on groundwater from the deepest aquifer system of the Baltic Artesian Basin (BAB) were performed to determine groundwater ages and uncover the flow dynamics of the system on a timescale of several hundred thousand years. We find that the system is controlled by mixing of three distinct water masses: Interglacial or recent meteoric water $(δ^{18}\text{O} \approx -10.4\unicode{x2030})$ with a poorly evolved chemical and noble gas signature, glacial meltwater $(δ^{18}\text{O} \leq -18\unicode{x2030})$ with elevated noble gas concentrations, and an old, high-salinity brine component $(δ^{18}\text{O} \geq -4.5\unicode{x2030}, \geq 90 \text{g Cl}^{-}/\text{L})$ with strongly depleted atmospheric noble gas concentrations. The $^{81}$Kr measurements are interpreted within this mixing framework to estimate the age of the end-members. Deconvoluted $^{81}$Kr ages range from 300 ka to 1.3 Ma for interglacial or recent meteoric water and glacial meltwater. For the brine component, ages exceed the dating range of the ATTA 3 instrument of 1.3 Ma. The radiogenic noble gas components $^{4}$He* and $^{40}$Ar* are less conclusive but also support an age of > 1 Ma for the brine. Based on the chemical and noble gas concentrations and the dating results, we conclude that the brine originates from evaporated seawater that has been modified by later water-rock interaction. As the obtained tracer ages cover several glacial cycles, we discuss the impact of the glacial cycles on flow patterns in the studied aquifer system.

π-Conjugation in Epitaxial Si(111)-($\sqrt3$$\times$$\sqrt3$) Surface: an Unconventional "Bamboo Hat" Bonding Geometry for Si

The newly observed ($\sqrt3$$\times$$\sqrt3$) surface reconstruction in heteroepitaxial Si(111) thin films on metal substrates is widely considered as a promising platform to realize 2D Dirac and topological states, yet its formation mechanism and structural stability are poorly understood, leading to the controversial terminology of "multilayer silicene". Based on valence bond and conjugation theory, we propose a π-conjugation plus charge-transfer model to elucidate such a unique "bamboo hat" surface geometry. The formation of planar ring-shaped π-conjugation and charge transfer from the rings to upper buckled Si atoms greatly lower the surface dangling bond energy. We justify this unconventional Si structural model by analyzing from first-principles surface energies and surface stress tensors as a function of strain. Within the same formalism, additional metastable surface reconstructions with the similar "bamboo hat" features are predicted which opens possibilities to other exotic electronic states in silicon.

Spintronics Detection of Interfacial Magnetic Switching in a Paramagnetic Tris(8-hydroxyquinoline)iron(III) Thin Film

Organic semiconductors find increasing importance in spin transport devices due to the modulation and control of their properties through chemical synthetic versatility. The organic materials are used as interlayers between two ferromagnet (FM) electrodes in organic spin valves (OSV), as well as for magnetic spin manipulation of metal-organic complexes at the molecular level. In the latter, specifically, the substrate-induced magnetic switching in a paramagnetic molecule has been evoked extensively, but studied by delicate surface spectroscopies. Here we present evidence of the substantial magnetic switching in a nanosized thin film of the paramagnetic molecule, tris(8-hydroxyquinoline)iron(III) (Feq3) deposited on a FM substrate, using the magnetoresistance response of electrical spin-injection in an OSV structure, and the inverse-spin-Hall effect induced by state-of-art pulsed microwave spin-pumping. We show that interfacial spin control at the molecular level may lead to a macroscopic organic spin transport device, thus, bridging the gap between organic spintronics and molecular spintronics.

Search for gamma-ray line features from Milky Way satellites with Fermi-LAT Pass 8 data

With 91 months of the publicly available Fermi-LAT Pass 8 data, we analyze the gamma-ray emission from the Milky Way satellites to search for potential line signals due to the annihilation of dark matter particles into double photons. The searched targets include a sample of dwarf spheroidal galaxies, the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). No significant line emission has been found neither in the stacked dwarf galaxy sample nor in the direction of LMC/SMC. The corresponding upper limits on the cross section of DM annihilation into two photons are derived. Compared with results of previous gamma-ray line searches with the Pass 7 data, the current constraints on the line emission from dwarf spheroidal galaxies has been significantly improved in a wide energy range. With the rapid increase of the sample of dwarf spheroidal galaxies (candidates), we expect that the sensitivity of gamma ray line searches will be significantly improved in the near future.

Load Coupling Power Optimization in Cloud Radio Access Networks

Recently, Cloud-based Radio Access Network (C-RAN) has been proposed as a potential solution to reduce energy cost in cellular networks. C-RAN centralizes the baseband processing capabilities of Base Stations (BSs) in a cloud computing platform in the form of BaseBand Unit (BBU) pool. In C-RAN, power consumed by the traditional BS system is distributed as wireless transmission power of the Remote Radio Heads (RRHs) and baseband processing power of the BBU pool. Different from previous work where wireless transmission power and baseband processing power are optimized individually and independently, this paper focuses on joint optimization of allocation for these two kinds of power and attempts to minimize the total power consumption subject to Quality of Service (QoS) requirements from users in terms of data rates. First, we exploit the load coupling model to express the coupling relations among power, load and user data rates. Based on the load coupling mode, we formulate the joint power optimization problem in C-RAN over both wireless transmission power and baseband processing power. Second, we prove that operating at full load may not be optimal in minimizing the total power consumption in C-RAN. Finally, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm to solve the target problem. Simulations have been performed to validate our theoretical and algorithmic work. The results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms existing schemes (without joint power optimization) in terms of power consumption.

A parametric finite element method for solid-state dewetting problems with anisotropic surface energies

We propose an efficient and accurate parametric finite element method (PFEM) for solving sharp-interface continuum models for solid-state dewetting of thin films with anisotropic surface energies. The governing equations of the sharp-interface models belong to a new type of high-order (4th- or 6th-order) geometric evolution partial differential equations about open curve/surface interface tracking problems which include anisotropic surface diffusion flow and contact line migration. Compared to the traditional methods (e.g., marker-particle methods), the proposed PFEM not only has very good accuracy, but also poses very mild restrictions on the numerical stability, and thus it has significant advantages for solving this type of open curve evolution problems with applications in the simulation of solid-state dewetting. Extensive numerical results are reported to demonstrate the accuracy and high efficiency of the proposed PFEM.

A Necessary and Sufficient Condition for Having Independent TE and TM Modes in an Anisotropic Waveguide

Whether there exist independent transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes in a metallic waveguide filled with an anisotropic medium is a fundamental question in electromagnetics waveguide theory, but so far no definitive answers have been published. This paper establishes a necessary and sufficient condition for having independent TE and TM modes in a waveguide filled with a homogeneous lossless anisotropic medium based on both waveguide theory in electromagnetics and basic knowledge in mathematics. Moreover, for the independent TE modes, we prove the propagation constants obtained from both the longitudinal scalar magnetic field stimulation and the transverse vector electric field stimulation are the same; for the independent TM modes, the propagation constants obtained from both the longitudinal scalar electric field stimulation and the transverse vector magnetic field stimulation are the same. This necessary and sufficient condition is a new theoretical result in electromagnetic waveguide theory, and is expected to be valuable for the design of waveguides filled with anisotropic media.

Controlling the joint local false discovery rate is more powerful than meta-analysis methods in joint analysis of summary statistics from multiple genome-wide association studies

In genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of common diseases/traits, we often analyze multiple GWASs with the same phenotype together to discover associated genetic variants with higher power. Since it is difficult to access data with detailed individual measurements, summary-statistics-based meta-analysis methods have become popular to jointly analyze data sets from multiple GWASs. In this paper, we propose a novel summary-statistics-based joint analysis method based on controlling the joint local false discovery rate (Jlfdr). We prove that our method is the most powerful summary-statistics-based joint analysis method when controlling the false discovery rate at a certain level. In particular, the Jlfdr-based method achieves higher power than commonly used meta-analysis methods when analyzing heterogeneous data sets from multiple GWASs. Simulation experiments demonstrate the superior power of our method over meta-analysis methods. Also, our method discovers more associations than meta-analysis methods from empirical data sets of four phenotypes. The R-package is available at: http://bioinformatics.ust.hk/Jlfdr.html.

Energy Efficient Downlink Transmission for Multi-cell Massive DAS with Pilot Contamination

In this paper, we study the energy efficiency (EE) of a downlink multi-cell massive distributed antenna system (DAS) in the presence of pilot contamination (PC), where the antennas are clustered on the remote radio heads (RRHs). We employ a practical power consumption model by considering the transmit power, the circuit power, and the backhaul power, in contrast to most of the existing works which focus on co-located antenna systems (CAS) where the backhaul power is negligible. For a given average user rate, we consider the problem of maximizing the EE with respect to the number of each RRH antennas $n$, the number of RRHs $M$, the number of users $K$, and study the impact of system parameters on the optimal $n$, $M$ and $K$. Specifically, by applying random matrix theory, we derive the closed-form expressions of the optimal $n$, and find the solution of the optimal $M$ and $K$, under a simplified channel model with maximum ratio transmission. From the results, we find that to achieve the optimal EE, a large number of antennas is needed for a given user rate and PC. As the number of users increases, EE can be improved further by having more RRHs and antennas. Moreover, if the backhauling power is not large, massive DAS can be more energy efficient than massive CAS. These insights provide a useful guide to practical deployment of massive DAS.

A Sufficient Condition of Having Independent TE and TM Modes in a Waveguide Filled with Homogenous Anisotropic Lossless Medium

Based on the idea of the Abelian group theory in mathematics, this paper finds a sufficient condition of having independent TE and TM modes in a waveguide filled with homogenous anisotropic lossless medium. For independent TE modes, we prove the nonzero cut-off wavenumbers obtained from longitudinal scalar magnetic field stimulation and transverse vector electric field stimulation are same in theory. For independent TM modes, we also prove the nonzero cut-off wavenumbers obtained from longitudinal scalar electric field stimulation and transverse vector magnetic field stimulation are same in theory. Finally we carry out several numerical experiments to verify the correctness of the condition given by us.We hope that this condition is useful for the designs of waveguide with homogenous anisotropic lossless medium in microwave engineering community.
