First experimental demonstration of an isotropic electromagnetic cloak with strict conformal mapping

In the past years quasi-conformal mapping has been typically used to design broadband electromagnetic cloaks. However, this technique has some inherit practical limitations such as the lateral beam shift, rendering the device visible or difficult to hide a large object. In this work we circumvent these issues by using strict conformal mapping to build the first isotropic cloak. Microwave near-field measurement shows that our device (with dielectric constant larger than unity everywhere) has a very good cloaking performance and a broad frequency response. The present dielectric approach could be technically extended to the fabrication of other conformal devices at higher frequencies.

Three Dimensional Subwavelength focus by a near-field plate lens

We implemented the inverse design method to build a thin near-field lens that could produce a desired subwavelength focus by manipulating the near fields of a magnetic dipole source. The flat near-field lens represented by an artificial impedance surface was fabricated by lumped reactive elements (capacitor and inductor) with spatially varying values. In the experiment a desired annular focusing spot with a characteristic size nearly three times smaller than that allowed by the diffraction limit was obtained. Besides high-resolution imaging, the proposed near-field plate could be extended for other interesting applications, such as wireless power transfer or complex wavefront/beam shaper.

Optimal Power Allocation Policy over Two Identical Gilbert-Elliott Channels

We study the fundamental problem of optimal power allocation over two identical Gilbert-Elliott (Binary Markov) communication channels. Our goal is to maximize the expected discounted number of bits transmitted over an infinite time span by judiciously choosing one of the four actions for each time slot: 1) allocating power equally to both channels, 2) allocating all the power to channel 1, 3) allocating all the power to channel 2, and 4) allocating no power to any of the channels. As the channel state is unknown when power allocation decision is made, we model this problem as a partially observable Markov decision process(POMDP), and derive the optimal policy which gives the optimal action to take under different possible channel states. Two different structures of the optimal policy are derived analytically and verified by linear programming simulation. We also illustrate how to construct the optimal policy by the combination of threshold calculation and linear programming simulation once system parameters are known.

Quantum nondemolition measurements of a flux qubit coupled to a noisy detector

We theoretically study the measurement-induced dephasing caused by back action noise in quantum nondemolition measurements of a superconducting flux qubit which is coupled to a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). Our analytical results indicate that information on qubit flows from qubit to detector, while quantum fluctuations which may cause dephasing of the qubit also inject to qubit. Furthermore, the measurement probability is frequency dependent in a short time scale and has a close relationship with the measurement-induced dephasing. When the detuning between driven and bare resonator equals coupling strength, we will access the state of qubit more easily. In other words, we obtain the maximum measurement rate. Finally, we analyzed mixed effect caused by coupling between non-diagonal term and external variable. We found that the initial information of qubit is destroyed due to quantum tunneling between the qubit states.

Implicit and electrostatic Particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo model in two dimensional and axisymmetric geometry I: analysis of numerical techniques

We developed an implicit Particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo model in two-dimensional and axisymmetric geometry for the simulations of the radio-frequency discharges, by introducing several numerical schemes which include variable weights, multigrid field solver, etc. Compared to the standard explicit models, we found that the computational efficiency is significantly increased and the accuracy is still kept. Numerical schemes are discussed and benchmark results are shown. The code can be used to simulate practical reactors.

Implicit and electrostatic Particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo model in two dimensional and axisymmetric geometry II: Self-bias voltage effects in capacitively coupled plasmas

With an implicit Particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo model, capacitively coupled plasmas are studied in two-dimensional and axisymmetric geometry. Self-bias dc voltage effects are self-consistently considered. Due to finite length effects, the self-bias dc voltages show sophisticating relations with the electrode areas. Two-dimensional kinetic effects are also illuminated. Compare to the fluid mode, PIC/MC model is numerical-diffusion-free and thus finer properties of the plasmas are simulated.

Modeling of Perpendicularly Driven Dual-Frequency Capacitively Coupled Plasma

We proposed an altered configuration for dual-frequency (DF) capacitively coupled plasmas (CCP). In this configuration, two pairs of electrodes are arranged oppositely, and the discharging is perpendicularly driven by two rf sources. With Particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo method, we have demonstrated this configuration can remove the harmful electromagnetic and DF coupling effects in conventional DF-CCP.

Permutation-invariant monotones for multipartite entanglement characterization

In this work we consider the permutational properties of multipartite entanglement monotones. Based on the fact that genuine multipartite entanglement is a property of the entire multi-qubit system, we argue that ideal definitions for its characterizing quantities must be permutation-invariant. Using this criterion, we examine the three 4-qubit entanglement monotones introduced by Osterloh and Siewert [Phys. Rev. A. 72, 012337]. By expressing them in terms of quantities whose permutational properties can be easily derived, we find that one of these monotones is not permutation-invariant. We propose a permutation-invariant entanglement monotone to replace it, and show that our new monotone properly measures the genuine 4-qubit entanglement in 4-qubit cluster-class states. Our results provide some useful insights in understanding multipartite entanglement.

Local Distinguishability of Orthogonal Quantum States and Generators of SU(N)

We investigate the possibility of distinguishing a set of mutually orthogonal multipartite quantum states by local operations and classical communication (LOCC). We connect this problem with generators of SU(N) and present a new condition that is necessary for a set of orthogonal states to be locally distinguishable. We show that even in multipartite cases there exists a systematic way to check whether the presented condition is satisfied for a given set of orthogonal states. Based on the proposed checking method, we find that LOCC cannot distinguish three mutually orthogonal states in which two of them are GHZ-like states.

Analogue to multiple electromagnetically induced transparency in all-optical drop-filter systems

We theoretically study a parallel optical configuration which includes N periodically coupled whispering-gallery-mode resonators. The model shows an obvious effect which has a direct analogy with the phenomenon of multiple electromagnetically induced transparency in quantum systems. The numerical simulations illuminate that the frequency transparency windows are sharp and highly transparent. We also briefly discuss the experimental feasibility of the current scheme in two practical systems, microrings and microdisks.

Magnetic structure of free cobalt clusters studied with Stern-Gerlach deflection experiments

We have studied the magnetic properties of free cobalt clusters in two semi-independent Stern-Gerlach deflection experiments at temperatures between 60 and 307 K. We find that clusters consisting of 13 to 200 cobalt atoms exhibit behavior that is entirely consistent with superparamagnetism, though complicated by finite-system fluctuations in cluster temperature. By fitting the data to the Langevin function, we report magnetic moments per atom for each cobalt cluster size and compare the results of our two measurements and all those performed previously. In addition to a gradual decrease in moment per atom with increasing size, there are oscillations that appear to be caused by geometrical shell structure. We discuss our observations in light of the two competing models for Langevin-like magnetization behavior in free clusters, superparamagnetism and adiabatic magnetization, and conclude that the evidence strongly supports the superparamagnetic model.

Bragg solitons in an electromagnetically induced transparency medium

In this Letter we discuss the possibility of producing Bragg solitons in an electromagnetically induced transparency medium. We show that this coherent medium can be engineered to be a Bragg grating with a large Kerr nonlinearity through proper arrangements of light fields. Unlike in previous studies, the parameters of the medium can be easily controlled through adjusting the intensities and detunings of lasers. Thus this scheme may provide an opportunity to study the dynamics of Bragg solitons. And doing experiments with low power lights is possible.

Magnetism and Magnetic Isomers in Free Chromium Clusters

We have used the Stern-Gerlach deflection technique to study magnetism in chromium clusters of 20-133 atoms. Between 60 K and 100 K, we observe that these clusters have large magnetic moments and respond superparamagnetically to applied magnetic fields. Using superparamagnetic theory, we have determined the moment per atom for each cluster size and find that it often far exceeds the moment per atom present anywhere in the bulk antiferromagnetic lattice. Remarkably, our cluster beam contains two magnetically distinguishable forms of each cluster size with >= 34 atoms. We attribute this observation to structural isomers.

Computation of topological charges of optical vortices via non-degenerate four-wave-mixing

In this paper, we report an experiment, which demonstrates computation of topological charges of two optical vortices via non-degenerate four-wave-mixing process. We show that the output signal beam carries orbital angular momentum which equals to the subtraction of the orbital angular momenta of the probe light and the backward pump light. The ⁸⁵Rb atoms are used as the nonlinear medium, which transfer the orbital angular momenta of lights.

Influence of a repump laser on a nearly degenerate four-wave-mixing spectrum in atomic vapors

The influence of a repump laser on a nearly degenerate four-wave-mixing (NDFWM) spectrum was investigated. We found the amplitude and line shape of the NDFWM depended strongly on the detuning of the repump field. A five-peak structure was observed. And at some certain repump detuning a dip appeared at the central peak. A rough analysis was proposed to explain this effect.

Local Distinguishability and Schmidt Number of Orthogonal States

Now, the known ensembles of orthogonal states which are distinguishable by local operators and classical communication (LOCC) satisfy the condition that the sum of Schmidit numbers of the orthogonal states is not bigger than the dimensions of the whole space. A natural question is whether an arbitary ensembles of LOCC-distinguishable orthogonal states satisfies the condition. We first show that, in this paper, the answer is positive. Then we generalize it into multipartite systems, and show that a necessary condition for LOCC-distinguishability of multipartite orthogonal quantum states is that the sum of the least numbers of the product states (For bipartite system, the least number of product states is Schmidit number) of the orthogonal states is not bigger than the dimensions of the Hilbert space of the multipartite system. This necessary condition is very simple and general, and one can get many cases of indistinguishability by it. It means that the least number of the product states acts an important role in distinguishablity of states, and implies that the least number of the product states may be an good manifestion of quantum nonlocality in some sense. In fact, entanglement emphases the "amount" of nonlocality, but the least number of the product states emphases the types of nonlocality. For example, the known W states and GHZ states have different least number of the product states, and are different in type.

Nonclassical photon pairs generated from a room-temperature atomic ensemble

We report experimental generation of non-classically correlated photon pairs from collective emission in a room-temperature atomic vapor cell. The nonclassical feature of the emission is demonstrated by observing a violation of the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality. Each pair of correlated photons are separated by a controllable time delay up to 2 microseconds. This experiment demonstrates an important step towards the realization of the Duan-Lukin-Cirac-Zoller scheme for scalable long-distance quantum communication.
